Hey, thanks for the video, I just got mine earlier this week and I love It. I love how you set everything up, obviously I know you have a lot of practice with customizing devices and android devices which i personally don’t, I’m still quite the noob. Im curious how did you change the theme/appearance for Daijisho from the default? It’s a darker theme that looks so great. Also when you were going through Retroarch, the background was like a reddish black color. How did you get that on there? Just curious how to change those things and what the themes are called. As you said, you got It looking “all pretty” and after spending $200 on this one compared to under $80 for a Miyoo or 35XX, I obviously want to make this device as clean and awesome as possible. Hopefully you see my question, thanks in advance!
Did your analogue sticks make a noise when rocking them side to side? Just got mine and ive got noise coming from both of them and a gap down the left edge of the screen 😢
It is insane to me to think that just 3 years ago we got the RG350, which blew everyone's minds for able to being able to only kind of run PS1 games. Now look where we are!
You helped me pick out my first retro handheld. I showed my friends your videos, and they have seen light. Now they are awaiting delivery of their first retrohandheld
I’m three retro systems in. RP2, unfortunately an RP3 like three months before the plus came out and my absolute favorite an RG35XX. As of now I’m on a tactical pause until the market can provide a machine that can play a hefty GC library for under $200. It’ll be here, maybe not soon but eventually it will but until then I pass. Thanks for being on the front lines of the retro wars Russ we truly appreciate it!
I played Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario and The Simpson's Road Rage on the Retroid Pocket 3+, for just a few minutes to try them, and it ran those 3 fine. I have no idea how hard or easy those are to run though.
@@joshhallam2253 I have seen what the 3+ can do. While it is impressive I have a gut feeling that we are on the cusp of greatness and are slowly edging towards a fantastic system that meets everyone’s needs and is friendly for an average American’s (or German’s) budget.
I just got the RG35XX this week to replace my RP2. The 35XX is a beast, but i'm with you, no more of these things until something comes out that can play Gamecube/PS2 stuff perfectly. I feel like there's an arms race going on and I don't want to buying a new device every 2 months
Hi Russ, great review as always. I am some kind of a product designer myself, and i can assure you that Anbernic doesn't make inline shoulder buttons in order to make the device more pocketable. This way is much more cost effective and they want to maximize their profit while keeping the price tag as affordable as it can get. And i want to tell that nothing wrong with that, i just wanted to emphasize their true intentions about this matter.
RUSS. That hit point suggest system is GENIUS. That’s the unique kind of Retro Game Corps flair that I’m talking about. And, as I might of expected, it tallied me at a -4 HP, reflective of my actual need for this device … Doesn’t mean I didn’t need to watch all the way to the end, though, ha! As always, great work, brother!
I’d love to see you add in a scaling section for the games you play. I’m someone who prefers to stick to integer scaling so that’s quite important to see how the different systems scale as they all have different native resolutions. I also would love to see more CRT shaders as well as those are something I see as essential in my opinion
Yeah I have absolutely no clue what he is talking about, does he want use sharpening filters to scale up the original resolution? In my opinion those look horrible, better just to live with the "chunky pixels" and play as it was intended.
If I wasn't old and realizing I need a bigger screen size to see stuff, I'd be all over this. Screen size between the RP2+ and RP3+ made all the difference in terms of enjoyablity for me. I do like how 4:3 context has VERY small black bars, though. That is very cool.
Ha ha , same here. My first and only retro handheld is the rg351p. I love that thing but in a very short period of time I needed a bigger screen. I'm waiting for the 'one to rule them all's handheld. I really only have 2 requirements, big screen and powerful CPU that can run most systems.
@@dazzenseabiscuit1366 I also started off with the RG351p which was I thought was going to be perfect. Having problems reading text on the small screen meant a belated trip to the optician, only to be told that I now require a complicated varifocal prescription. Tried 4”, 5”, 5.5”, 6”but the only systems that didn’t give me fatigue was the 7” Switch OLED and the Steam Deck. They’re great just took a while to realise what I needed.
I ended up with the Logitech Cloud because of this. I know it's expensive, but what else was I going to do? If I can't see what's on the screen it doesn't matter if the system has a lot of bang for the buck!
It’s a shame that’s there’s so much to dislike about the rg552 because the screen is perfection. My dream handheld is essentially the rg405 with the 552 screen and a processor that is compatible with Linux
Same here. I have rg350v woodgrain, and the little v90. They are great, but for my dumb eyes. I need at least a 5 inch screen. Gameboy games are doable on 3.5 inch, as they are meant to be that small, but for NES or SNES that's too small.
I appreciate your videos man. Watching you and Wulff Den got me into getting an RG351V, and I may end up getting this device as well. I really like the layout of the analog sticks as opposed to the Retroid or older Anbernic devices. I love playing retro games or games that are reminiscent of those games, moreso than playing most of the modern stuff. And they are perfect to play on handhelds like this and others.
I have the wood grain RG351v! It’s so good and I decided to buy it after watching these vids, it’s such a capable little handheld and can do Dreamcast with minor tweaking. I was originally sad that a PS2 capable handheld was out of my price range but having the 351v helped me discover so many PSX and GBA RPGs that I had never heard of, I carry it in my bag and play daily it’s such a good buy
@@GoldenCoastGTA why is Wulff so cynical, does it just come with being into this longer than almost anyone else? I watch his videos and they're amazing in quality, but he really does seem... Bored?
Agreed on needing a Plastic variant. Love the feel and look of this one though. Screen is super interesting, deep and vibrant compared to many of the other 4:3 options. Stubbs.
Keep up the good work, man. My first ever handheld is an Anbernic RG353P, and I bought it because it combined the build quality of an Anbernic device with their first ever set of stacked shoulder buttons. You, ETA Prime, Wicked, Taki Udon and Retro dodo rule the roost as far as retro gaming is concerned, in my opinion.
Thanks a million for this great test. The Buying RPG is such a brillant idea! I ended up barely alive, with only 1 HP left, so I guess I’ll pass the RG405M and wait for some better options. Very good concept, though!
thank you for those in-depth high quality reviews of those Anbernic handhelds, it really help especially for those who consider buying but don't have enough hands-on information to make a decision
@@MysticGohan01 Wuh? PSP and RP3+ owner. Agree with point there are other devices, but not seeing what you're talking about= little impact at all. Moot point here anyway, due to the much smaller display on the 405 and low res.
@@rushmore3927 I have no idea what you just said, but the systems this thing is aimed at, Ps1, drsamcast, saturn, n64.. They're all 4:3. Ps2 and game cube? Also 4:3. ONLY psp Is 16:9 (not including hacks). This is why I never bought an rp3+.
@@dbozgt Thank you for the concern, but great things come to those who wait! Just got an update from the developer. Review units have been shipped out and first batch will be shipped mid to late April. Also here is a link to him playing Vita on it. 😁 photos.app.goo.gl/j1VvAtfetPENdBe18
Thanks for the great review. I got a score of 1 so it has helped me decide to hold on for a while and see when we get a handheld well capable of handling GC and PS2. Thanks.
First of all thank you so much for all the work you put in your videos. If you don’t mind, I would like I would like to share my complete dilemma over which (first) handheld to get. I am mainly and purely looking to play retro (RPGs/Platformers) games for consoles such as the Nintendo NES/SNES/64, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis/Game Gear, GB/GBC/GBA. Not exactly interested in anything 3D really so PS, Wii, Switch, 3DS aren’t necessarily what I want, but would be a slight “plus”. I am really confused with all the screen aspect ratios when deciding which is best for my needs. If I had to choose two main consoles it would be the SNES and Gameboy (color and advance). So far I am considering (my pros/cons): RG405M - not psyched about the screen density/lack of HDMI out. I heard GarlicOS may be coming to the 405M which is fantastic and a huge plus for me RG552 - may be too big/heavy but love both the screen and having HDMI out RP3+ - leaning towards this one the most atm but it may not be supported when GarlicOS comes out for the 405M. I am really torn on this one I would really appreciate any input you can throw my way. Thank you again.
Hi Halsten, thanks for the support! In regards to your question, that's a tough one. The RP3+ or the Retroid Pocket Flip might be the best fit, its video out capability is great and will comfortably play your primary systems plus quite a few bonuses. Plus the higher resolution screen will give you more room to work with when it comes to accurately scaling pixel systems. The RG552 unfortunately isn't a great first handheld -- the battery life, diminishing community support, and lack of performance power only really makes it a good fit for diehard 16-bit-eta enthusiasts at this point.
Had 6 hp at the end. I'm honestly surprised this turned out to be such a compelling device for me, but I think I may wait for a price drop or a handheld in a similar form factor that can reliably run PS2/GC era games. Definitely considering this, though!
I adore the size comparisons. It took so long for me to decide between the Odin and the RGP3+ Inches/mm mean nothing to me. Being able to see how big a device is compared to something I own (usually Switch/Switch-Lite) is EVERYTHING.
This thing is rad! I'm sticking with the 353m for a couple reasons. 1. HDMI out - I love playing an rpg on the bus out in the world and coming home and throwing it up on the tv 2. Firmware - ArkOS is incredible! 3. I really prefer my joysticks on the bottom.
thanks again Russ! i was on the buy page and ironically your video popped up. after your RPG i will go with your evidence and buy the Pocket 3+ it offers me more of the feel that im going for. a big thank you for saving me some money my friend!
I recently gave away my 353P to a coworker that was leaving. I still preferred it over the 353M, which was far too heavy for me to enjoy holding (and the metal was either very cold to the touch, or got very hot to the touch after use). I have an RG505 that I use pretty much every day, but I'm still tempted to buy another 353P anyway, just because I loved the 4:3 aspect ratio and it was so damn comfortable to hold. This looks awesome, but I've learned that metal handhelds aren't for me.
It's very tempting, but at the same time not much of an upgrade over my 353M. I play tons of racing games so the joystick at the top is definitely a plus. It might have swayed me had they used stacked shoulder buttons. For now just holding off until the ayaneo pocket air comes out, as that seems like it might be the ultimate retro handheld, provided its priced accordingly.
If I was just getting into this hobby and didnt own any handhelds I would go with this. But with my steam deck, RG351MP and miyoo mini plus I couldnt convince myself it was worth it. Once we get a similar size handheld that can reliably play GC/Wii/PS2 titles then itll be worth it.
I think you have chosen quite a good three tier selection there. A big powerhouse handheld pc for the grunt, a compact 4:3 horizontal handheld all rounder for older systems, and even smaller vertical form-factor Gameboyesque mini handheld for grabbing on the go.
I bought my Retroid Pocket 2 based off your reviews many years ago, and I've been very happy with it. Back then I thought, "man, we're only a few years from having PS2 and GameCube games in the palm of my hand!"... 3 years later and I'm still being teased. I know I could get a Windows-based handheld, but I really don't want to spend $500-1000 when I could just play an emulator on my main PC anyway. The day I can get a small, pocketable retro handheld that can play NES-GC for under $150 in an ergonomic device (preferably in vertical orientation)... that'll be a good day.
I've been an RG351M owner for a year now and definitely stand behind the craftsmanship and feel of the unit. Once I change to amberelc most systems ran better for me but since it has the switch style analog sticks it's no good for me on my n64 and ps1 games as the drift interferes. This looks like an excellent upgrade for 5th and 6th Gen stuff but I think I'll go up to the next price range for something with a little more power
The missing HDMI and stacked shoulder buttons are exactly the reason why I'd buy the RG353P again instead of this one. I love the flexibility to use it as a "Retro Switch".
I just want to say that I enjoy watching your videos Russ, even though I am no longer in the market for some of these handhelds. Your videos helped me refine my use case and end up with the Miyoo Mini/RP3+/Steam Deck trinity, and continue to educate on the state of the community and offerings. I honestly just love hearing about competition in the market, refinements to hardware, and innovation in software/firmware. I watched this just to support, and ended up learning enough about it that I may recommend it to a friend who is in the market - he's probably a +6 on the score, I am a -3. It's good to keep up with new products, but you also produce fantastic content and are the gold standard for product reviews and guides. TYFYS!
@joshuasuarez2370 that's a tough question - depends on your definition of "well", and whether tinkering is involved. This and the RP3+ are probably the most affordable options that can play GC with tinkering, but something like the Odin or that range can play with out of the box or minor tinkering
@@salitz91 for further explanation, meaning smash bros melee. I want a handheld that could run that at lowest price point. I don't care for any other emulation. Thanks for taking the time to reply to begin with
@joshuasuarez2370 I mean, the Retroid Pocket 3+ can do it for a bit cheaper ($150) but is a little hit and miss on some games, and requires tinkering with settings to get working well. I have one, and it does work for Melee, but I had to fiddle with settings a bit. The good news is that it can use Bluetooth controllers and the HDMI out to play with family - it's a good time! This device is a little more expensive, partly due to the metal shell if that matters for you, but same chip and generally same performance as the cheaper RP3+. If you want decently good performance without the tinkering for Gamecube, the Ayn Odin Lite will probably just work out of the box, with a bigger screen/size, at $199. Hope that helps! RGC has videos on all of em if you need help making that decision
3:55 I really like how you show the portability factor by displaying it on hand, getting it in and out of pocket etc, the only missing part was comparing it to a phone and maybe other common devices like a Nintendo Switch, etc.
Love the review, really put things into perspective. My HP is 3, but since the gaming I want to do is PS1 at the most, and I like a device that I can just pick up and play, I feel like I can spend a lot less to accomplish this. I'm thinking RG35xx, install Garlic OS, and wait for the higher end handhelds to sort themselves out. Just having up to PS1 in my pocket is enough to excite 10 year old me.
This is the one for me. I think having this for N64/PS2/GC or any other analogue stick based system, as well as a 353m, 353v or 280v for d-pad based systems is a combo that covers every base.
@@erenjaeger9418 nah, I'm still planning on getting it, but just for N64, GameCube and Saturn. I have a 35XX for the older stuff and will wait for something more powerful before diving into PS2 and GC :)
It's either this or the rp3+ metal edition for me. We'll see what's available in June when I'm able to buy, and I guess the decision will be made for me!
Been waiting to buy a handheld for a while, just decided to pull the trigger on this. Not looking to be blown away, but looks like it'd be nice to have.
Great video Russ! This is super tempting, while I am definitely looking forward to the under-$200 PS2/GC devices whenever they come, most of the games I'm nostalgic about are 4:3 era and below, so playing them on a nice 4-inch screen is really compelling. If you happen to see this - do you think there will be a 4:3 handheld with the power to play PS2/GC in the future? Seems like every more powerful device also gets a 16:9 (or 16:10) screen slapped into it.
Yeah I'm on the hunt for that kind of device for 2 weeks now. A lot of list recommend this specific device, but they also warned about the graphics limitations and tempering with the settings, which is something that I want to avoid. People did recommend steam deck or the Asus ARG ally, but they all need for me to download emulation and games from roms library. I would do that only if it's 100% safe from viruses. Don't want to shorten the lifespan of my handheld
@@oksure5963 You're not going to find ANY device that does require you to download emulation stuff... That's what these consoles are doing, emulating. It's not playing PS1 games natively...
Thanks for the video. The RP2 + plays game cube quite well considering its a low powered chip in it. I am waiting to see what they do for the flip but I imagine the 3+ and 405 will have more games you can play with it.
I used to see pictures of people's retro handheld collection on the sbc subreddit. I was glad to not be a collector and just be able to enjoy playing. I had a Retroid Pocket 2 and wasn't really happy with the device. The d-pad made my thumb sore after a while, and I didn't enjoy playing N64 games (which was the reason I had got it) without c-buttons. I thought the digital slider would have worked. The ZL button broke, and the joystick drifted, so I figured I'd wait and get a handheld that could do N64 no problem. When the 3 came out and it was close to doing GameCube, I figured I'd wait. I ended up with the 3+. The D-pad and buttons are fine but not perfect. Seeing this makes me want to try an Anbernic device. And now I understand the collectors. No device is perfect, and you keep wanting to get something that has one thing you like or does better than your other device(s), or has a different size. Like the 3+ with grip fits fine in my jacket pocket. What will I do when the summer comes? Get an Anbernic? Lol. Oh, and my score was a 4, but I'm going to try to hold off and not buy another handheld for another 2+ years. 🤞
Thanks for the review. I got a 4HP score but I’m wondering whether you could do a guide for which Anbernic device to choose? I haven’t bought any retro handheld but thinking of which should be my first purchase
This one should be, it’s definitely their best unless you specifically want to focus on 8 and 16 bit games. If that is the case then look up last years m device 353m However I wouldn’t get a ambernic device at all. The retroid devices are just superior at this point
@@whatsupdude retroids are generally cheaper, better chip sets and built with good quality. The retroid 3+ is probably still the best bang for your buck with retroid flip close behind. You can look up the review on this channel for the 3+ and it makes it all clear why it is so good
Good stuff. The 4:3 aspect ratio is nice but maybe the 405M's biggest shortcoming is that, as Russ mentioned, both the RP3+ and the Odin Lite are more vfm. The RG353M on a discount on the other hand would be very tempting to me.
Hit point idea is genius. Conceptually and functionally obviously. I think that's a great system moving forward, especially as others already have pro con lists.
My score was +1HP. New to emulator handhelds and I’ve watched a bunch of your videos over the past few weeks. I love the look of the 405M (clean, compact, premium look) but I think ultimately the 3+ is the device for me! Looking forward to future reviews!
My modded PS Vita 2K model is my favorite dedicated gaming device of all-time. It contains many of my all-time favorite games... Final Fantasy VII Tekken 3 Ridge Racer (PSP) Final Fantasy X Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Super Mario World Super Mario All-Stars Super Mario Kart Street Fighter II: Turbo Mortal Kombat II Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, & 3 God of War I & II I got my Vita second-hand back in May 13, 2017 and battery life hasn't degraded much if at all! I love that it's smaller and lighter than my Switch Lite. I put my music and some movies on it. Vita is the GOAT to me. Then Switch Lite. But I'll eventually get a Steam Deck. It lacks the personality of the Switch though. Valve doesn't release its own exclusive games like Sony and Nintendo do. I hope Russ releases more Steam Deck videos. Like what are his dislikes about it? What are his favorite games he's playing from it? What are his daily carries?
Already ordered mine, very excited! On your breakdown, I ended up with 7hp lol all the +1s applied to me and only the first -1hp knocked it down at all. Only thing I wouldve preferred here is the dpad on top but im still stoked
Same, and those “similar handhelds” in my cases included Nintendo Switch and Analogue Pocket. The 405M has a better form factor than the Switch, and better 32-bit gaming support than the Pocket. Additionally, the Pocket doesn’t have Bluetooth support (for headphones), which is super annoying as good quality wired earbuds are really hard to find.
@@jamesporter1315 yea the sticks make a tiny clicky sound when i rotate them. Its not loud but its noticeable. Theres also the higher audio latency but thats expected with this chip. Otherwise I love mine. Perfect size, all the buttons and sticks feel great. Screen is good size and gets nice and bright. Only real quibble is I still wish the D-Pad was on top but it stopped being a major bummer once i just decided to get over it and enjoy it joystick-n-all lol. I really love my RG405M
I've been waiting for this one all week! Your videos helped me decide on my trusty 351M as an intro machine last year but I've noticed my eye wandering to things that might be able to run Dreamcast and maybe PS2 better. Haven't watched the review yet though, but fingers crossed :)
Nice. Scored +5 at the end. Had hoped for better PS2 performance but I'm happy to tinker to get the couple of games I really want to play going. PS1 and Dreamcast are my real love though and it's the spotty Dreamcast performance on my 351M that I want an upgrade for (the bigger screen is definitelya bonus though ;p)
Good device but for me the aspect ratio of steam deck and Logitech g cloud with the perfect 16:10 aspect ratio balancing 4:3 retro and 16:9 modern games. I wonder if we’ll get a retro handheld that’s powerful but portable with a screen balance that can fairly present both 4:3 and 16:9 games equally pleasant.
The lack of dual boot is the deal breaker for me. Between my RG351v and Steam Deck I've become very accustomed to having a little more flex and choice in operating system and front end. Android certainly comes with its own advantages, and at one point I DID want an Android-based device, but I've ultimately decided it's not something I'm interested in right now. If I'm buying a device today, it's probably still the 353m.
This video along with all of your others have helped me determine that the pocket 3+ is what I am going to order. You point out so many things that I did not think of. I was really considering a 4:3 for retro gaming but I'm realizing I want to do more with my device than I thought. The pocket 3+ seems to be the most versitile device for the money right now.
Can you please make a video listing the systems in power and price order (cheapest to most expensive), for both android and windows/linux systems (maybe 2 separate videos)?
Oh, Russ, an idea! I don't know if anyone else would be interested in that, but I'd loooove some game recommendation videos where you go over what games you're currently playing. 🤘🏻
I've been waiting for this video to come out and I'm really glad I did. This video convinced me to wait. I love my RP2+ and it' the perfect size for me, but would like a bigger screen with a more powerful chipset. I was hoping this was it, but I guess I'll keep waiting.
This thing is so close to perfect for my preferences. I love the metal shell, hall sensor sticks, and 4x3 screen. But I want HDMI out, controller support and 2 player like the RG35XX, stacked triggers, and enough power to play everything through OG XBOX. Hopefully something like that will be available soon!
Great review as usual! I was hoping this would cost 119$. At this price and with the Retroid Pocket Fold coming out soon I can’t justify the price. The metal is expensive and I appreciate the higher quality build but 179$ with that screen is just too much.
On widescreen. PAL Dreamcast, GameCube and Xbox run at 720 × 480P which is 16:10, so a 16:9 display is fine for them as is, as opposed to their NTSC counterparts at 640 × 480P. That said, 16:10 scales to either 4:3 or 16:9 better than either do to each other, I wish we had more 16:10/3:2 handhelds.
I recently got my 353m (love it!) after watching this review. I really like the look of this device, the screen is a decent upgrade for my degrading vision lol. But I don't know if I'm ready for an Android only experience. I've become spoiled by how streamlined the batocera interface is. I know Android can run all these systems and more, sometimes better, but it just seems so clunky in comparison. Even on my rg552 I typically run Linux. If that had the option to reboot into Android I might use it a little more often but having to eject the sd card is a headache
I agree with the statement about the plastic version. If anbernic were to made rg405ps without hall sensor sticks, metal shell, just kept the 4 inch 4:3 display and price it around 100dollars i would buy it in a heartbeat.
You really do pay a premium for portability, I think its wroth it, ended up with a 5 on the HP score but I already have a retroid pocket 2+ and I have a steam deck that can handle all ps2 and gamecube games, this fits that niche well.
This handheld looks excellent. And that's exactly why I'm not buying. I want to wait for another iteration which could bring down the price and improve the appearance
it really isnt a problem spending a minute or two per gamecube game configuring settings, especially with incredibly simple guides to follow. maybe im just biased because i play mostly pc games but oh well
Great video as always Russ. I am not getting this as I have the Retroid Pocket Flip pre-ordered and intend to make that my pocketable/portable android retro device. I have a video topic suggestion for you that I don't think has been covered. What do you recommend in terms of save game backups and transfer between devices? I am going to fully transition to the Steam Deck for retrogaming but when I can't take it with me or if the battery dies I plan to use the Pocket Flip because of its portability and battery life (compared to Miyoo Mini). I think that since EmuDeck uses retroarch and Emulation Station that I should be ok as long as I use the same method on the Pocket Flip (except substituting Daijisho for the Emulation Station frontend since it isn't on the Play store). I heard that retroarch on the Steam Deck makes use of cloud saves as well so that is encouraging.
For now, this is my device. It's got a much better feel than the rp3 and I don't mind playing PSP at .82 aspect ratio and having it fill up most of the screen. I can mess around and make it do a lot of things I want. It's actually pocketable. More so than Retroid's offerings. It's comfy and premium. Sure I wish a few things could be better but all in it's easy to carry and feels good to play, and that's good enough for now.
Was actually going to get the Gcloud until I realized how big it actually is. This is perfect. Slightly bummed about the xbox gamepass controls but having perfect N64 emulation is something I've been waiting for since the day I found out about retro handhelds in 2020. Great vid
My RPG score is 4, which is pretty high, but I think I'll go with Odin, because of a bigger screen and higher performance for relatively same price. Although, if I needed an actually pocketable handheld, this is probably the best one at the moment.
Anbernic should release an RG505M model (RG505 but with the metal shell), that would be so friggin' awesome. then you pretty much could have had an "RG405M" but with the 5 inch OLED screen
Just ordered one of these. Kinda excited to play Donkey Kong Country and the likes again. I can play them on my ROG Phone 3 but having dedicated buttons/joysticks should make all the difference.
Will you be making a set up guide as you did with the 351? Would greatly appreciate it if you do as I just got my 405M and have no idea where to start. Found a set up guide from another yt’er but it’s a bit too complex for me. Look forward to a setup guide if you do do one! Thanks for all your content; you helped me seal the deal on the 405!
Correction: I messed up my pixel density calculations, the RG405M has a 200 ppi vice the 228.57 ppi I referenced (which is the ppi of a 3.5" screen).

These videos are becoming more and more valuable with how saturated the market is now.
It's actually incredible how saturated the market is for such a niche set of products.
It is insane to me to think that just 3 years ago we got the RG350, which blew everyone's minds for able to being able to only kind of run PS1 games. Now look where we are!
@@XhoowieX it's trivial to make these devices

Extremely saturated.
You helped me pick out my first retro handheld. I showed my friends your videos, and they have seen light. Now they are awaiting delivery of their first retrohandheld
Thanks for everything you do, Russ!

I’m holding out for a pocketable GameCube device. Not sure how long it’ll take but we’ve come a long way in even the last year or two.
I just switched to pants with bigger pockets. The future is now!
There is: ODIN LITE AND PRO. Not super pocketable but it does them plus PS2.
Same, I have a 280v and it going up to ps1 means I don’t really need something less capable than 6th gen console capable stuff
@@justinvanhorne9958 women’s pants tho 😭😭my purse is already cramped too 🙃
I use an android phone + a gamesir x2 pro controller + Dolphin Emulator, and it works beautifully. I can even play Wii games with it.
Do you have a go-to for these small devices?
I've been using CRT-Lottes-Fast.
I love CRT shaders on my retro games.
I actually like the idea of 4:3 640:480 screen, it's been a default resolution for many classic consoles.
I cannot stand Wulff cynicism so Retro's laid back and objective vibes are a god sent.
@@GoldenCoastGTA +1
Bored?
@@SzymonSaysStuff I don't know, to me seem to think of himself that he's super important and omniscient.
The RP3+ is still my go to choice with this Chipset. The "all aroundness" of the device, stacked triggers and HDMI output are huge sell points.
Too bad the 16:9 ruins it as psp isn't the only console people play
@@MysticGohan01 Wuh? PSP and RP3+ owner. Agree with point there are other devices, but not seeing what you're talking about= little impact at all. Moot point here anyway, due to the much smaller display on the 405 and low res.

Thanks for the review as always Russ, thanks to them I got the 35XX and setup Garlic on it. I'm loving that handheld so much!
So far I am considering (my pros/cons):
RG405M - not psyched about the screen density/lack of HDMI out. I heard GarlicOS may be coming to the 405M which is fantastic and a huge plus for me
RG552 - may be too big/heavy but love both the screen and having HDMI out
RP3+ - leaning towards this one the most atm but it may not be supported when GarlicOS comes out for the 405M. I am really torn on this one
I would really appreciate any input you can throw my way.
KTR1 is gonna reliably do much more PS2/GC games. Though they're taking their sweet time getting it out there.
@@jurjcluners8490 i thought ktr1 is already released is it not ?
The retroid pocket 3+ can do a fair amount of GameCube and PS2 games, but they need some tweaking.
@@jurjcluners8490 it looks like we will have to wait a little longer past the KTR1. Unfortunately
If your waiting for PS2/GC/XBOX you’ll probably be waiting a few more years 😂
I adore the size comparisons.
It took so long for me to decide between the Odin and the RGP3+
Inches/mm mean nothing to me.
Being able to see how big a device is compared to something I own (usually Switch/Switch-Lite) is EVERYTHING.
This thing is rad! I'm sticking with the 353m for a couple reasons.
1. HDMI out - I love playing an rpg on the bus out in the world and coming home and throwing it up on the tv
I've got one on order and I'm clocking in at 5HP. I'm pretty pleased with that
I recently gave away my 353P to a coworker that was leaving.
I’m personally just in it for a handheld for ps2 games at this point. Thanks so much for the great review, hard work and dedication!
Do we know anything about the performance on that one? AFAIK they never said they're targeting GameCube or anything of the sorts. :/
Liking some of the stuff you do in the vid Russ! 4:40. I Ordered mine at 12 when they released it, it's in Luxembourg now coming to NL.
Great review as always - hope Chicken is feeling better, i can always use a cat break :)
The missing HDMI and stacked shoulder buttons are exactly the reason why I'd buy the RG353P again instead of this one. I love the flexibility to use it as a "Retro Switch".
Thanks for the great review as always Russ, I ended with +4hp, seriously considering this one!
TYFYS!
How informed you are! I'm on the same boat almost. Question, is this the cheapest device that can play GameCube well?
@@salitz91 your amazing bro. Thank you for the lengthy and educational explanation. I know what I'm getting now
Was looking forward to this video. You're the best man, thanks!

I am also after such a device. Deck is great but too big
Found anything?
Yeah I'm on the hunt for that kind of device for 2 weeks now. A lot of list recommend this specific device, but they also warned about the graphics limitations and tempering with the settings, which is something that I want to avoid.
People did recommend steam deck or the Asus ARG ally, but they all need for me to download emulation and games from roms library. I would do that only if it's 100% safe from viruses. Don't want to shorten the lifespan of my handheld

Lol.

I've been waiting for this video to come out and I'm really glad I did. This video convinced me to wait. I love my RP2+ and it' the perfect size for me, but would like a bigger screen with a more powerful chipset. I was hoping this was it, but I guess I'll keep waiting.
Hell yeah, let's go! Been waiting on this one. I had already ordered mine but I always look forward to seeing your take on a new device 🙏
Was your shipping details on your email from the seller not provided as well..
@@j-rome2394 Everything was good for me. No missing details. Got the tracking number a few days after I ordered.
Thank you 🙏🏼 I just ordered mine.
If this thing had video out and controller support I’d have ordered it on day 1
Okay wait 10 years
I wish they would release something like an RG505*M*, which will basically be an RG505 but with the aluminum shell and slightly better hardware
Can't wait to get mine. Takes a long time to get here.
The music in these videos SLAPS
this looks so good but the dpad/joystick layout is an instant dealbreaker. love your reviews, they make trying to shop a bit easier
Thank you for letting me know about Saturn and Dreamcast games. Will wait for the next chipset.
How cool is the idea with this hit-points. Really clever 👌
Passing on this device. Waiting for in hand reviews of the retroid flip.
THERE IS A VULKAN VERSION OF CITRA?? GET OUT!!! That is beyond awesome, I assumed the day would never come out. Many thanks to the devs!
Have you picked this up and used it at all since this video come out? What would your 1 year post-review update be on it?
I agree with the statement about the plastic version. If anbernic were to made rg405ps without hall sensor sticks, metal shell, just kept the 4 inch 4:3 display and price it around 100dollars i would buy it in a heartbeat.
i been wanting to get the rg 353m. im glad i waited.
You really do pay a premium for portability, I think its wroth it, ended up with a 5 on the HP score but I already have a retroid pocket 2+ and I have a steam deck that can handle all ps2 and gamecube games, this fits that niche well.
Did Taki also design this one? The Star and Select buttons are in the wrong place.
This handheld looks excellent. And that's exactly why I'm not buying. I want to wait for another iteration which could bring down the price and improve the appearance
6 points..... Nice handheld, perfect for 4:3 retrogaming and the CRT shadder make it looks like a real TV
it really isnt a problem spending a minute or two per gamecube game configuring settings, especially with incredibly simple guides to follow. maybe im just biased because i play mostly pc games but oh well
Great video as always Russ.
Great vid
I would love a video on decoding these names. Maybe one that covers multiple brands?
My RPG score is 4, which is pretty high, but I think I'll go with Odin, because of a bigger screen and higher performance for relatively same price. Although, if I needed an actually pocketable handheld, this is probably the best one at the moment.
Relatively the same? The lowest end Odin is 200. Ayn's shipping is almost twice as what Anbernic charges.
I just got mine in the mail today! Wohoo!!!!!
Man, thanks for including SEGA Worldwide Soccer '97!
