    Hello Russ,
I jumped in this hobby in June of this year and I wanted to take a moment, as 2024 comes to an end, to thank you personaly for your dedication, the quality of your work and the tremendous amount of value that you are giving to me (and us ofc, but I speak about me here :p).
Watching this video made me realize even more what a great year it was to discover that subject and how lucky I am to be able to enjoy it, consume content about it and found people online sharing and caring.
The very first video I watched about retro handheld was one of yours (about a random powkiddy that I don't even remember the name) and I'm pretty sure that the quality of your content, the ton you use and the way you speak to us made me dig deeper into it because I felt, in a way, welcomed and helped.
Lol I'm even being a bit emotional writing this, just a tiny comment in the youtube ocean to say I'm grateful to you, to the community, to everyone who worked, are working and will work hard to keep games alive and spread the art.
Anyway I love the format of this yearly review, categorizing handhelds not just with prices. And this intro was amazing !!!!!
Again, my Trumui Smart Pro and I are grateful 🙏 Hope you and your family stay well and will have a beautiful end of year.

The Anbernic SP was so impressive that I bought 3 more so I could give them to all my brothers for Christmas. You mentioned the little joy you feel in flipping that clam shell, its so wonderful to have that form factor back.
I'm making a called shot here; I want Anbernic to put out a DS form factor handheld next year. I think the DS/3DS is one of the hardest systems to properly emulate because so much of the gameplay revolves around the form factor. Anbernic feels like the frontrunner to make something like this possible.

Russ, between you, Wulff Den, and Tech Dweeb, I was able to narrow down what I really wanted in a retro handheld and finally pulled the trigger on buying my first one: The GOATed Anbernic RG35XXSP. My life has been pretty busy lately, and the ability to turn on my handheld and be playing a game about 15 seconds later without any fuss has been (pun intended) a game changer. Thank you for all of your hard work that helps people like me make very informed decisions!

I recently bought a RG35XXSP. Actually bought it for my wife, she needed something very easy to just pull out and put away on her breaks at work (she gets up to 2 hours of free time over a 12 hour shift). It's absolutely perfect for her use case!

Thanks to you, Russ, my favorite retro handheld is, by far, the RG Cube. It was actually your review that convinced me to pull the trigger on it, and ever since then, I've fallen in love with it. I love it so, SO much, especially for systems like 3DS, DS, Pico, Gamecube, and more! It's now my daily driver and I bring it with me every time I go out. And the fact that it looks like a Fisher Price toy but can handle a few PS2 games? Omg it's SO weird but just SO cute. The only thing I need now is a joystick upgrade for it, but other than that, I LOVE it.
And I also love, love, LOVE my Steam Deck. It's amazing being able to play PC games on a handheld and be able to haul it around the house whenever I feel! I've even traveled with it a few times, but have since left it at home as my 'home console' (as my Cube is now my travel companion for gaming). It's an amazing handheld and gets just as much love as my Cube. It's amazing, ESPECIALLY for the price I got it at (I got a refurbished 218GB model for only $318) and it's the best thing ever!
I do plan on buying one more handheld before tariffs take effect in the US, which will be the RG Nano as a little keychain/gag gift for my Mom's birthday this month (or a GKD Pixel if I can still find one).
You're amazing, Russ! Thank you for all that you do :3. Happy Gaming!

My retro handheld purchase this year was the Retroid Pocket Mini. When it came out, it seemed to tick all the boxes of what i wanted in a handheld - compact, relatively inexpensive, but with enough power to play PS2 games. I didn’t mind the small screen, since the things i wanted most excited to play would work perfectly well on a 4:3 screen. I am totally eyeing the TrimUI Brick and the SP, though, those were really cool releases for this year!

    • @Rockndolls
      @Rockndolls 19 днів тому

For me the Retroid pocket mini is the best for pocketable Retro emulation. And will remain for a moment. I'd like a clamshell from Retroid now. Maybe less powerfull (hopefully not) will be for people to play with (Multiplayer). Next to that what I don't have still is the Windows based handheld who makes pointless to have a Retroid 5 for me. At a moment I'll have "that" but with Windows. For now and emulation, the Pocket mini is probably the best (in black)

You really do this better than anyone. Have you ever done (or considered doing) any videos about retro gaming on a CRT? I just picked up an old 13" Sony, hooked up a modded Wii, plugged in an SNES mini controller, and have been astonished how good of a retro gaming system it is! The handhelds have always been my go-to, but it's been such a fun and nostalgic option.

I sold a bunch of my handhelds late last year to help fund a couple of my son’s hockey tournaments. I remember telling myself that I won’t buy any in 2024, and will just be happy with what I have…… what I liar I was to myself… RG35XX, SP, 28XX, 40XX, XU Mini M, TrimUI Brick, miyoo A30, and even re-bought a miyoo mini that I never should have sold in the first place… meanwhile, my PS5 collects dust… Great video as always, Russ!

I grabbed myself a Retroid Pocket Mini, and it absolutely was an game changer for me. I have always been a fan of PS Vita, but wished it had more to offer. RPMini is basically that and much more. It has everything i wished for. The only downside is the facebuttons being loud and kinda long pressing-travel. Sure. The display is 4:3 or at least oriented for thst ratio. But for the portability and chipset, i prefer it over RP5.

I really don’t understand your harsh critiques against the AYN Odin 2 Mini. Saying the screen is washed out, suffers from vignetting, and is a downgrade from the original Odin 2 feels like three strikes of incorrect and misleading information.
The screen on the Odin 2 Mini is absolutely stunning. The colors are super vibrant and well-balanced-maybe not as deep as OLED, but still incredible. Whether I’m playing retro games or modern titles, the display consistently amazes me. As for the vignetting, it’s so minimal it’s barely noticeable, and certainly not a dealbreaker.
Also, calling it a downgrade compared to the original Odin 2’s LCD is just plain wrong. The Odin 2 Mini’s Mini LED display is a significant step up. Mini LED technology offers deeper contrast and better brightness control, and it’s the same tech used in Apple’s MacBook Pros. That alone speaks volumes about its quality.
As for overheating issues, I’ve played long sessions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild through Switch emulation with no problems at all. Maybe you need to turn on the fan? I’ve set mine to Smart mode, and it works perfectly.
I think you should take a second look at the screen and overall performance and give this device a fair evaluation. This handheld and its technology is incredible, and IMO deserves better recognition; it’s my pick for 2024.

You may want to check your copium levels. I'm not trying to be mean or invalidate you, but how much of this is subjective vs factual things.
Also keep in mind some people are more susceptible to seeing mini LEDs haloing. Haloing is worse than having less contrast with some peoples eyes. Some people's eyes have more rods then others and etc. those same people typically see better at night then others. It's an evolutionary change thing. (Ge someone with heritage from countries that have overcast most of the time. Are generally more light sensitive compared to other people. ) I forget the whole exact biological reasons and the regions that x this and that correlates based on the theory.
But it's something to keep in mind before saying someone claiming someone is spreading misinformation..... That's why we have tools to measure these things objectively.
But the very nature of this piece is subjective by definition as is most of russ's videos. For you, it's probably great and I'm happy for you. But i think you should take a breath and try to be more objective before stating something inflammatory

Picked up the SP. My first clear blue one snapped at the hinge, but my clear red I got as a replacement has been excellent. The SP is exactly what I've been wanting since I got into the retro handhelds. Almost picked up the powkiddy one but it was too cheap and not powerful enough. Before I found out about these retro handhelds I was looking at getting one of the modded Gameboy SP's, but they'd gotten so expensive as more and more of them were bought and refit and resold. It was prohibitively expensive. The SP fulfilled all my desires for playing my old retro games. If I were to pick something up to play more powerful systems it would be the Retroid 5 I think. You mentioned that spark of joy when you pick up the SP, and I get that same feeling.
