Got conscripted into the army to defend my country, got an RG Nano to keep me company. Went for this one specifically because people keep emphasizing its solid build. So far so good; while it's borderline unpleasant to play for an extended period (got large hands and pains in my thumb joints), I found that I rarely have enough time or energy for long play sessions. Running around for a bit in some old beat'em-up, or driving in racing games, or wandering through the GB, GBC, and Pico-8 libraries, - that's where this thing shines, and that's enough for the time being.
@@VGoetz5352, thank you, and glory to heroes. A bit late for the "keep your head down" advice - have already been to the frontlines, have already got injuries (technically light, but still, mhm, unpleasant). Sure will try to avoid getting any more - there're too many games I haven't tried yet=\

Thanks for being there every step of the way on my handheld journey, Russ. I first got into them in 2021 and your channel was the first I came across before buying and the perfect resource for finding what I wanted to buy. Three years and six handhelds later I’m still constantly struck by how professional, helpful, and entertaining your vids are. Your knowledge has made me a master of all things handheld. At this point friends are coming to me for recommendations because of how much I’ve learned from you. They’ll ask me to load custom firmware for them too and so many of them are playing because of me and therefore because of you. Thanks so much man, I hope you and your family are well
Wow, what are the odds, my wife was asking me for Christmas ideas this morning and I happen to pull up RGC to look for some ideas. This was super helpful!
As always, thank you for posting! Happy gaming! A30 with SpruceOS clears all for me. The form factor and portability coupled with the good retro performance is so good.
Crazy how I literally just bought a miyoo mini a week ago and got it set up and running with onion OS using your guide. It's gonna be my secondary pocketable handheld to use at work or on the go. Bought that hardshell case too from your recommendations on the written guide. Thanks for the help man.
I prefer the RG28XX over the A30. I had 2 Miyoo A30 and just gave them away to friends, the thing gets too hot on the back, battery life sucks, front plate gets off the device and the ink on it fades after a week of gameplay. Spruce is great and all, but with no Onion is really hard to keep it. Also, I found the 28XX screen a bit bigger plus battery life is amazing with 8 hours. I bought a grey/beige one for $48 with good quality hard case and a pair of glass screen protectors plus the silicon cover. They don't bother me at all but for some people, the small action buttons is just a matter of time to get used to it
Russ, my younger brother has always recommended you, ever since he bought the RP2S based on your reviews. Thank you for your awesome content, and I hope this channel keeps going!
Ignoring the chip controversy, the Xu Mini M is imo the best mini portable to date. Has a full controller in it, great and bright screen, dual sd card, audio jack, and even runs portmaster (with PlumOS), while being truly pocketable. The Miyoo A30 is terrific as well but its lack of second analog stick, no bluetooth audio or audio jack (the xu mini works well with a dongle), dimmer screen, and lack of ports (outside very few) made it just lose in my daily travel game device. Still, cramming wifi and rumble into it and still being that small with an analog stick is crazy. As well as Spruce being a terrific custom OS (though I actually like how PlumOS works on the XU better). Still, we are in a great time for tiny devices that can truly play your whole retro catalog with minimal concessions. And being $50 or less is also great.
Because of the buttons, my Nano became a media device for bedtime. I watch comfort sitcom reruns on it. Now the MM goes everywhere with me. BMO buttons in transit!
I had to take a family member to a doctor's appointment where I was going to be in the waiting room for a few hours. I took my RG28XX and time just flew by. It was cool to just throw that in my pocket and I had a really fun time-killer.
I have low vision. Every time I hear "pocketable" that means I will never be able to use it because it is too small. I am so happy for the 4-inch models now as they are the lower end of what I can see. Also, I would never put a game system in my pocket. I was that dork with the Gameboy in a case as a kid.
I'm such a stickler for scaling nowadays that it's hard for me to use the RG280V/M screen now :( It's still a great little handheld, my wife loves it (she plays Dr. Mario on it).
I actually bought the GKD Pixel a few months back as my first retro handheld, definitely in part due to this channel. It's a shame they aren't making more.
The a30 is crazy comfortable for me! The L/R around the corners are just perfectly responsive. I do have smaller hands though. My fried has a MM+ and I think that really is the ultimate small handheld IF you don't need it to fit in your pocket. Crisp screen, great weight... I'm probably buying one around Xmas! 🙃
The A30 is near perfect for me. As someone who grew up in the NES days, that form factor and the dpad feel so natural. I actually prefer the recessed stick and Spruce works well. If it didn’t get so warm, it would be a 10/10 in my book.
There's a reason that the miyoo mini and miyoo mini plus are the only handhelds where I purchased every single color slowly before things became popular (obviously I got the yellow, and the plus ones, later). I knew it was going to have more longevity with not only its form factor, but onions os continues amazing support. Best operating system we've gotten from the community so far. They would eventually get very popular and now have changed screen on the mini.. A few of mine are different versions. V2, v3, v4. I wish I didn't gift my v1 to my cousin.. sticky buttons or not! Haha So I say all that to say, it's the first one I wanted to preserve for my collection with every color like people do gameboys. For the price i got all of them for over time, I never regret this decision and am currently working on a custom display. The reddit community gave me crap for it.. but I never got more than one per drop, and did so over time..I also use and customized them all.
I absolutely love my Miyoo A30 with Spruce. The form factor is perfect for my big hands too. Cant wait to see what Spruce has coming down the line. I also don’t seem to get much heat transfer. Barely gets warms at all. I expected more but it’s not bad at all. Plus it’s getting to be winter so if anything I’ll enjoy the warmth 😂. I wish Etsy had more custom button options. I’m tempted to buy another one I like it so much
I am glad that I bought the Miyoo Mini 2 years ago already at that time they were about 86000krw which is around 79usd at that time and now the Miyoo V4 is around 50000krw or 60000krw which is 50usd or less than that. Is an amazing console that traveled with me since then. I just love it. Awesome video as usual 🙌🏻💯🔥
The Miyoo Mini is such a fantastic emulation handheld. It's purposefully built to play anything up to PS1/NDS, and it does so flawlessly with great controls, great screen, and with Onion OS making it SO easy to get in and out of games. I have a Steam Deck, but often it's too unwieldy to pull out during train- or bus rides. I play on it a lot once I reach my destinations. But I often don't use it during the actual "travel".The Miyoo Mini is just large enough to be comfortable, but small enough to be EXTREMELY convenient, pocketable and "available". I ALWAYS have room for it and It has even become my main "in the tent"-entertainment when hiking or bike packing. :) I can wholeheartedly recommend it still. It kind of feels like an ACTUAL Nintendo product, but with better screen quality. ;)
I still love my Anbernic 280v and play it often, it's the perfect size and isn't too crampy to play on. It's old but has a decent screen for its size. From this list, the Miyoo Mini is still my favorite.
I was extremely close to buying a GKD Pixel about a week ago. it was pretty much the perfect size for having on my person at work so I could pull it out during lunch and such to play Pokemon or Mega man battle network. But ultimately I decided I didn't need to have it on my person, I could keep it in the truck (where I eat) and the RG35xxSP was just such a gut punch of nostalgia for me, and I really wanted back something close to what was stolen from me back in junior high school... So I have that on the way, Hopefully within the next 2 weeks I should have it~
Out of these 5, I own 3. The Miyoo Mini V1 that I bought at launch, the Miyoo A30, and the GKD Pixel. The Miyoo Mini is the most charming, no doubt about it, but it still is too big for my pockets along with my wallet or phone. The A30 I got just too play with Spruce and it's actually really nice, but it's my bang around device. But my every day carry is the GKD Pixel. It is basically a smaller, metal MM. I've finished more games on it than probably any other handheld I own. It's my number 1, even with its caveats.
Russ, I think it would be so cool if you did a video like this but tailored to people with big hands, or a focus on hand comfort. I personally LOVE tiny consoles but playing these for more than 30 minutes my fingers are cramped or even in pain
I have the same issue. The Rg406v is too cramped even. Somehow the RG28Xx is playable with fingertips, but one device keeps my huge hands happy for now. RP4pro w/the $16 grip. It's the best big hand option in retro handhelds in my opinion
@@chimrichalds81 That's one I've been looking at as well. Needing something to upgrade from my pow Kitty x55. Something with a nice balance of smallest size but comfy for my big hands. The RP5 mini is one I've looked at too
I sold all the retroconsoles I had and only kept these: - Myioo mini plus (I'll never get rid of that icon), - PSVita (a classic that everyone should have) and... - Smartphone Galaxy SPlus + Gamepad Gamsir Galileo G8 + Retroarch to emulate the entire planet. 😅
I love this! I always want this topic just to play with something while I wait for my friends to show up... a bus ride, that kind of thing. Also always like the TrimUI model S.
GKD Pixel would definitely be number one if it wasn't for the price/scarcity. Your minUI guide made it perfect for me. Miyoo Mini will always be a classic and FunKey iconic. Really wish they would make a "Funkey Plus" that would just be .5 inch bigger with USB C
i think it's hilarious how prominent the sega featuring is now that nintendo has officially earned their villain status on this channel. lmao great video
I have the Miyoo Mini Plus but I was looking for one that's more pocketable. Literally just ordered a Miyoo Mini v4 last night. I'm glad this video backs up my choice
I love seeing these videos the most, because i feel like im updated in the retro devices scene. Personally I still rock my rg351p and m from your first videos with the still awesome amberelec. And i also ended up buying miyoo mini (and also plus) and even steamdeck because of your videos. But still i enjoy knowing the diferences between new devices and your opinion is always on point and very welcome. Thanks so much
Bravo Zulu lad! Bloody brilliant and totally agree with the list although I might switch 2 and 3 with each other in terms of ranking. I freaking love my Miyoo Minis. I've three and I'm getting the other two colourways. I just can't help myself. You're right, the best handheld is the one that you have with you and the Miyoo Mini nailed it man.
Something that helped me with the heat on the Miyoo A30 was a grip shield. Protects the system while you're on the go, and improves grip and heat while playing it. It only added a little bit of bulk.
The Funky S always goes with me, but I'm also addicted to fist gen Pokemon. Got the miyoo plus more advanced systems and the razer edge for PS2 emulator. Thanks for everything Retro
11:04 ironically, one if the things I love about the TrimUI Smart is the large bezels. Makes it feel more durable. The Miyoo Mini and RG35XX are beautiful devices, but I dropped my Miyoo Mini one time and bam, screen busted. Those bear bezel-less devices are beautiful, but they feel like jewelry with how fragile they are 😅
I thought the Miyoo Mini was the end-all be-all for me on tiny handhelds, but then I got a GKD Pixel. The size fits me better. I love the metal body. So I'm not worried about breaking it like the Miyoo. I remember seeing people dropping their Miyoo and breaking them and very low heights. The Pixel really does have a nice and premium feel.
At first I thought I'd be sated after grabbing up a Mini Plus, but now I'm watching videos about mini handhelds for retro games... while playing on the Miyoo Mini+ I think I might have new Hobby for watching Retro game videos.
The GKD Pixel is my favorite: metal shell, metal buttons, decent battery life, perfectly-placed and clicky shoulder buttons that aren't too sensitive (unlike the Miyoo Mini), and a vertical layout for one-handed gaming. The only downsides for me are the system limitations (e.g., MinUI doesn't support ColecoVision), and that I'll likely no longer be able to buy another, unless GameKiddy makes a Pixel 2.
The Miyoo Mini/+ has definitely something addictive, I just bought a RG40XXV to have a bigger screen and maybe a more comfortable handeld, but i keep coming back to the Miyoo Mini +, its better dpad/buttons, Onion OS and form factor makes it really unique.
My first device into this foray was the Miyoo Mini V2, but despite how cool and capable it was, it was just too small. Discovered the RG35XX with GarlicOS shortly after, and it felt perfect. Just enough chin to make it comfortable for use, even over the Miyoo Mini+. Despite all that, Russ hits the nail on the head when he says the 3.5" devices aren't truly "pocketable". They are always "noticeably" in my pocket. My only differing opinion is of the MagicX device: I don't like it. Aside from the screen and the hall sensor sticks, the rest of the device just feels cheap to the touch, and it turns me off from it; even compared to the Miyoo A30 I got at launch.
Great video as always! Just ordered a miyoo mini last night lol bought the rg353m about 6 months ago and I really like it but it’s just not quite as grab and go as I’d like. I keep seeing miyoo mini content and I just think that’s the experience I’m really looking for. Ultimately I’m leaning toward the retroid pro 5 as a potential main device (miss the oled of display of my switch and want something that can also do gcb and ps2 for at home/longer trips) with the miyoo mini for on the go. Really excited about it! Yet another video confirming I’m on the right track for where I want to be for portable gaming! Thx for all your time and hard work. Here’s to hoping for something with the form factor of these devices with a good display, controls AND WIFI…I feel like things are sooo close but not quite there yet.
Thanks for the video, I've kinda been hoping your site would one day get some sort of a "find a perfect device for you" tool, where I can just select options and price range I want and it would give your recommendations and videos on fitting devices, buuut hell a video like this also works pretty well.
Brilliant, as always, Russ! You are the definitive go-to for the most comprehensive and considerate perspective on this thriving retro gaming hobby. So grateful for you and your work, you not only give me permission to enjoy the hobby in deeper, more meaningful ways for myself, but also to share the joy with others. These kinds of retro handhelds make tremendous gifts, and I have custom tailored several now for others and enjoy the gift that keeps on giving as we share the love and fun. #noninjasnoproblems
The A30 being above the rg28xx is crazy to me as someone who owns both. I've tried to like the A30 but the 28 just does everything better (and I'm including controls, particularly that dpad). The face buttons have never been an issue. Also I feel like no one talks about this but the A30 has a very cheap feeling screen, especially compared to the 28 glass screen.
They don't bother me at all but for some people, the small action buttons is just a matter of time to get used to it
As a fellow owner of both, couldn't disagree more. The 28xx does not feel ergonomic in the slightest, the plastic is hard, buttons are noisier than 10 boxes of tic tacs regardless of any mod attempts to quiet them, the dpad is stiff, buttons too small. It's not a pleasant experience. For what you are going to use these small devices for, the a30 is head and shoulders above the 28xx.
I was surprised to see somebody prefer the a30 over the 28xx also. Poor battery life on a pocket device, doesn't make sense. Having to do a bunch of setup to fix the jank is not my cup of tea either. Loved my miyoo mini and miyoo mini Plus until they were each dropped once and disintegrated. If the rg28XX has harder plastic meaning it won't shatter, that's a plus
@@chimrichalds81 I have 2 MM+, they are solid as rock very good build quality. Later on I bought a silicon cover for each, as I did recently for my RG28XX. Can't do the same for my RG35XX H because it won't fit inside the hard case.
I’d give the A30 more love if it had replacement parts available. I gifted one to my nephew, and within 2 months, the screen burned out. I tried to find a replacement screen, but none are available. So as a Miyoo Mini Plus owner myself, in spite of its little brother’s lack of Wi-Fi, I have to say that the OG Miyoo Mini is the best recommendation, for better quality than the A30 and OnionOS as an option.
My miyoo mini v4 is coming in a week I can’t wait🎉 I’m gonna use it to play everything before PlayStation one and for ps1 i use rg350m which nobody is talking about anymore which is a shame I love it great video keep it up🤘😎
Hey Russ, been a fan of your videos for a while now but I’ve been hesitant to buy a retro handheld. I’ve been waiting for the perfect retro experience. My perfect retro experience would be something like the RGB30 with the square screen, a touch screen so I can play all the ds and 3ds games, and a chipset that flawlessly plays up to GC and PS2. A great Dpad and buttons would also be great. Unfortunately that handheld doesn’t exist yet. However with this video, you might have convinced me to at least try one of these more pocketable handhelds. They’re not too expensive either so I find it a nice place to start. Might pick up the miyoo mini. Thanks again for all the great videos and recommendations.
My MM+ goes in my pocket everytime I leave the house. The controls, the aesthetic, and OnionOS make it the handheld I won't put away despite having tried many other products.
I have 3 out of the 5 ones you showed and I agree with everything, including the great surprise that was the magic x mini. It is so confy, I can play some dreamcast games fine on it (I was training for the release of mvc2 on it)and it is overall the best small device for me if you include the possibilities that the analog sticks adds to the device. I am a bit let down by the myioo a30, especially after getting used to the miyoo mini. It has a lot to be a great device but for an example, syncthing never works.
I've got a bunch of these devices.... I will agree, the OG Miyoo Mini is very special. With OnionOS it's almost the perfect device. Hit the power button, it saves a state and when you turn it back on, it starts exactly where you were. This should be the standard with these devices. I have not used mine in a little while, I need to update it and use it more often..... I'll admit, I am eyeing the a30, the wi-fi and some N64 is tempting....man I have too many of these devices... I have some larger devices, like the SteamDeck and other devices but, they are not pickup and go devices... and that is the big problem...
With what you said about the Magic X XU Mini M in mind, have you ever considered doing something like a Review Replay video, or whatever? Maybe a video where you do a quick blurb about each handheld where your opinion has notably changed from when you did your initial review, but not enough to warrant a whole new video about it? I think that could be interesting to watch just to cover some changes in opinion.
Really would love for Anbernic to upgrade the 28XX, it is so near to being a perfect device. If they make the buttons bigger and add wifi/bt it would be godlike
I love these little things. The Miyoo is just so cute and pretty and weirdly satisfying to hold. But I barely ever use it, because I'm a bit spoiled by the comfort of a real controller and the screen and power of a cheap phone. But give that Miyoo a 960p screen and a Snapdragon, and some software upgrades, and we'd be in cahoots again.
Still love my Funkey that it's discreet enough to play. Also watched y our video on how you play your RG Nano (similar to Funkey) and have been using it as my Pokemon machine. Perfect little device for short breaks in the office.
Yes, the Miyoo Mini... My first love. My soulmate. Forever. 🥲

I had a GB micro that died on me this year. I got an A30 to fill the gap and I am in love. It was a rough start but it grew on me. It’s got rumble!
It kind of feels like an ACTUAL Nintendo product, but with better screen quality. ;)
I'm probably alone in this, but I hope we get a newer Miyoo Max/Pocket Go V2. Five years later and it's still my most pocketable 3.5 inch handheld.
The RP5 mini is one I've looked at too
@@therealJeXus the rp5 and mini excite me too. Is love to know what you get
I just ordered a Miyoo Mini V4 earlier this week. I have the MM+ but something about the mini is just so charming.
Just got a Miyoo Mini not too long ago, and i can say i understand the hype on this little device now.
I sold all the retroconsoles I had and only kept these:
- Myioo mini plus (I'll never get rid of that icon),
- PSVita (a classic that everyone should have) and...
- Smartphone Galaxy SPlus + Gamepad Gamsir Galileo G8 + Retroarch to emulate the entire planet.
😅
Started bopping my head to your intro man! Nice lol
I love this! I always want this topic just to play with something while I wait for my friends to show up... a bus ride, that kind of thing. Also always like the TrimUI model S.
The a30 is my traveling device. So cheaply purchased and loaded with games. I like the rg35xxh too but the a30 is more expendable.
GKD Pixel would definitely be number one if it wasn't for the price/scarcity. Your minUI guide made it perfect for me. Miyoo Mini will always be a classic and FunKey iconic. Really wish they would make a "Funkey Plus" that would just be .5 inch bigger with USB C
its crazy how good the MM is, still the king of small retro hanhelds. I love mine, i wont ever sell my blue v2 model
i think it's hilarious how prominent the sega featuring is now that nintendo has officially earned their villain status on this channel. lmao great video
Thanks so much
This is just so incredibly detailed and useful! Thank you.
I knew I could count on you Russ, I was just thinking of getting one of these for a Christmas present!
Any classic online gameplay russ and the guy from Retro Dodo play, I'm down to watch.
Two of my favorite reto emulation reviewers 😄👍🏿👍🏿
the white a30 is the best retro design i've seen on a handheld.
Those bear bezel-less devices are beautiful, but they feel like jewelry with how fragile they are 😅
54 seconds, new personal record 🎉
I know someone who can do it in less than 5 seconds.
@@Conellossus what??? wacking off?? that fast?
I thought the Miyoo Mini was the end-all be-all for me on tiny handhelds, but then I got a GKD Pixel. The size fits me better. I love the metal body. So I'm not worried about breaking it like the Miyoo. I remember seeing people dropping their Miyoo and breaking them and very low heights. The Pixel really does have a nice and premium feel.
Man, your videos are really cozy
The perfect EDC for me has been the Miyoo Mini+, I never go out without it.
You're in MY Goldilocks range, Russ!!
I’d say the miyoo mini plus is also pocketable. It’s thicker but pocketable, especially if you’re wearing sweatpants or fleece.
The Miyoo Mini and Mini Plus's community support give them a leg up on most of the rest.
Love your vids, Russ! You upload so frequently that all these snacks are gonna make us fat very quickly...
I love the miyoo mini. Aside from the PSP Go, it's my go to throw-in-yer-pocket handheld.
They don't bother me at all but for some people, the small action buttons is just a matter of time to get used to it
As a fellow owner of both, couldn't disagree more.
@@strikelight to each their own I guess, glad you're enjoying your a30
I was surprised to see somebody prefer the a30 over the 28xx also.
Russ, thank you for doing the lords work.
I'm excited for the refreshed Magicx Mini M that should be releasing next month. Chip drama aside, it is my favorite mini handheld.
The miyoo a30 is my perfect small handheld. With the addition of spruce firmware it's perfect in my opinion.
The GKD Pixel is so underrated i wish it were cheaper😢
Wish I saw this before ordering my R36S yesterday
Really would love for Anbernic to upgrade the 28XX, it is so near to being a perfect device. If they make the buttons bigger and add wifi/bt it would be godlike
Interesting hearing that the Miyoo A30 has gotten a better D-pad over time. I was initially disinterested in it because of that.
Hey Russ, will we ever get a tour of your snack and drink cupboard? Given the number of videos you put out, I imagine it would be a thing of beauty.
To me the smallest I can go is the Miyoo mini plus. I find it’s almost just as pocketable as the mini with a much better screen size.
I loved the look and sold me it has wifi for the MIYOO A30 cant wait to try
Still love my Funkey that it's discreet enough to play. Also watched y our video on how you play your RG Nano (similar to Funkey) and have been using it as my Pokemon machine. Perfect little device for short breaks in the office.
