Swapping Tires On the Troy-Bilt Horse Tiller Without Removing Rims

  • I wanted to show everyone how you can remove our tire on your tiller without removing the rim in case your rims are frozen to the drive axle. We will be replacing the turf style tire with a more aggressive cleat style traction tire for better gripping in soft dirt. Tire is the factory 4.80/4.00x8. You might need a bead buster (which is shown in the video) in order to break the tire bead from the rim. Grab some tire spoons, or if you are desperate, a few standard screwdrivers, and off you go!
    I replaced these because I was tired of the tire going flat in 10 minutes haha!

    The tread on the old tires is indeed called turf tread. The tread on the new tires is called bar lug tread,

      Bar lug! That makes sense thanks! Bless✌🏼

    That’s one of the garden way tillers. Built in Troy New York. Hence the name Troy Bilt. Love em for sure. Good American iron🇺🇸

    3 things you need. A rubber headed tire hammer, Vise grips, and Murphy's tire mounting soap, lol Pack that bead with tire soap and you don't need the strap

      My strap is only one item vs 3 items and is less messy. But that works too👍🏼

    I Own the pony troy built, had it for years and years, Love it! Same tractor tires!, Original! Some You Tuber gave a great post one time on how to keep tires from dry rotting, prop the axle off the ground so the tires don't have the weight of the machine!!! Just put new tractor tires on an old, Old, OLD no useful you tube info on my troy built sickle mower that I bought on Craigslist for $200. Did the X, Y, and Z and it runs great! I call it Jaws, for when I was putting it back together, with leather gloves on, the sickle blades moved about a 1/4 of an inch and nicked the glove, for a millionth of a second and barely drew a molecule of blood! Very informative video, have a great weekend. Robert

      Ohhh a sickle mower! They cut very nice but yes, you definitely want to be careful of those teeth lol. I love these Troy belts pony our horse. They are great piece of machinery. You have a great day boss!

    Could have thrown some paint on the wheel when all the rubber was off - would have been easy not to have to mask things off.

    And of course, no need to balance these.....unless you're planning on tilling the garden at 40 MPH. 😂😂😂😂 (just a little joke, about that big 🤏) Speaking of big rigs and tires, a dump truck had a flat on my street and called the roadside tire service and you're absolutely right, they can change them while they're still on the truck. Thats also why they carry only the tire as a spare. Thanks for sharing! Hopefully the garden turns out good too!

    Ok now this gives ms a question, I bought a cub cadet a few years back and the tires no this one are backwards to yours and mine is a rear tiller too are they backwards?

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine  2 місяці тому +1

      Sounds like it. The way that the tread is facing on mine is the correct way. Mine are forward facing, which is going to get into the dirt grab it, and pull it thru as you’ll see at the end of the video where I’m looking at the clumps of dirt on it.. If your tiller works good enough I wouldn’t worry about it too much.😉

    I've got an old Troy Bilt tiller with a similar problem. However the tire current on it say 3.25-5 which doesn't seem to exist anymore. Do you have a suggestion on replacements?

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine  Місяць тому

      What’s the Inch diameter on that tire? It should I think be either a 8”, 6”, or 4” tire. Not familiar with the 3.25-5 tire size…….

    I have my father’s old horse model from the 80s. Apparently the linkage has come loose somehow inside the transmission because it doesn’t move forward or backwards. I’ve been meaning to pull it apart to see what it needs but I haven’t got around to it.

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine  Місяць тому

      Ohhh. Yeah I haven’t been inside the gearboxes myself yet but I know UA-cam videos exist for that. They’re great old tillers. 🙂✅

    • @tablature6121
      @tablature6121 Місяць тому

      Those TroyBilt gearboxes are pretty much bulletproof. Usually the only problems with those are dope leakages around the seals. You might want to check to to see if it has sheared the keyway that affixes the driven pulleys to the transmission shaft. Easy, cheap fix if it is. Easy to check: put it in forward and see if the driven pulleys are rotating but the shaft isn't. If that's not the problem (the shaft is rotating as well) then the problem is indeed in the gearbox.

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine  Місяць тому

      @@tablature6121 Thanks for sharing. Yeah I need to check that one of these days. Yes indeed these gearboxes are overbuilt….which I embrace!
