Join me on my journey as we explore the fun world of getting automobiles back on the road. My main focus will be to awaken old iron that have been sleeping for far too long, as well as repairing iron that needs help. This channel was started and named by my purchasing Edd the Volvo (old family car) from my Uncle and Aunt for restoration and also named for my Swedish side of my family. I HATE Tire Service Companies - 2018 Subaru Forester Lug Studs and Nuts Replacement
Some company did my friend dirty. BAD dirty. They put tires on the Subaru after "servicing" and broke at least 5 lug studs. ALL TIRES had some form of either broken lug studs and or nuts. Also they put on mix-matched lug nuts as well. The mechanic told the customer to send it, and their service writer also told them: "Its fine don't worry about it." Unbelievable! We will right the wrong that the incompetent mechanics and tire company has done.

i have to do a forklift wheel like this after the weekend. wish me luck
Ooof! Best of luck next week boss🫠💪🏼👏🏼
Well done SM, can't believe they let her go leaving the studs and nuts like that. Looking forward to seeing the next installment of old yeller too. 🤠
Bless☺️✌🏼
Just another note here Swede. I don't remember having to remove the hub assembly to replace studs. They usually have openings where the stud can be driven through the back and the new one pulled thru with an impact, lug and washer. Would that apply here by chance Internet People?
It might. I wasn’t paying attention to be honest. Hopefully someone else can chime in here👍🏼
Must've taken them to a Les Schwab lmao
Things have been worse since Les died I’ve noticed
I use Tirerack's mobile installation... that way I can watch them like a hawk!
Ohh there you go!
You are misinforming a lot of people on this subject. 10 years of tire service I can tell you that every lug or stud I ever broke was from taking the nut off and never putting it on. Because of this you would have to go back to the previous installer usually the owners that cross threaded the nut on the stud putting it on. This situation would automatically become my fault and my responsibility to repair because it broke when taking it off. The exact accusation that you make in this video. I can tell by looking this is exactly what happened to these lugs. Most likely previously rammed on with an impact and not started by hand as you correctly did in your video. Great repair job by the way.
There are still good mechanics out there. Glad you’re one of them. It’s a shame how much effort you have to go thru these days to find one. Thanks for stopping by.
I liked how you got rid of ALL of the lug studs and nuts and replaced with new! no tellin what stage of fucked up the others were and no reason to play Russian roulette with semi screwed up parts> here in North Carolina we had a company come in and buy out a VERY reliable trusted tire service chain and now they jacked their hourly rate to more than $150!!! AND ttheir work, service and attitude turned to garbage! Caveat emptor! (Latin for buyer beware!)
WOAH!! $150 / hr? Sheesh if I had to pay that I’d better be at the dealership getting repairs! Yes, there was no way I would trust any of that hardware. I told my friend we are placing all 20 studs, and 20 nuts. That’s the only way I could guarantee safety 😉
Why can't you name the company
I would love to name and shame. However I also don’t need internet harassment to muck up the ability for my friend to get a conflict resolution from said company.
@@SwedeMachine Agreed / Thank you
Valid question and most welcome
First of all, tire breakers make minimum wage (or as close as possible), usually means untrained kids and temporary employees. Typically you find a problem created the last time the wheels were installed the next time you need to remove them. As far as mis-mached nuts, I worked in a university city with 7 auto parts stores and often couldn't find 5 correct lug nuts for common US cars, let alone 12 x 1.25 Japanese lug nuts. Still sending it without repairs is not cool, unless the customer specifically refused repairs.
You know your lug nut thread pitch size. Very good! Yes even if they had to order them it would only take a few days to get them. I get it some parts are not commonly in stock and you’ve got to chase them down. That’s fine. Due to slight surface rust on the broken studs it’s been more than a few days. Probably months I’m guessing. I’d have to ask the owner. So there was more than enough time to fix them. I know we all start somewhere with our skill set, but this is a pretty crucial piece of hardware that definitely demands special attention. Thank you for sharing👍🏼
Modern air impact guns can easily reach 1200lb. ft. I know that it’s more trouble but I used a torque wrench to finish tightening wheels after running the nuts up snug with an air gun. Due to the massive number of guys getting out of the automotive industry many places have hired warm bodies to try to fill the gaps. 80% of young graduates of automotive repair schools quit within the first two years after graduating. It’s got exponentially worse post-Wuhan lockdowns. Unfortunately it’s not going to get better anytime soon. The exodus of good people from the automotive industry has been an ongoing problem for at least 25 years and it hasn’t caused any significant change in how shops compensate good workers.
I agree and it’s a shame and scary. The ol’Rona didn’t do any good for the blue collar worker. 1200 lbs? Sheesh well there you go. I am grateful that I got my degree and can use it to help people in need like this. My heart really goes out to those single parents with kids who don’t have time to mess about repairing their car and get hosed like this. If anyone knows of such a situation please do them a solid if practicable. Thanks for sharing✌🏼
Had a tire shop ruin a set of original 5x5.5 Lincoln steelies, they uggadugga'd the nuts on so far the cones bottomed out on the face of the brake drums, completely flattening the center section of the steel wheels. Once loosened back out, the wheels were unsafe to use as they wouldn't clamp properly anymore. They ended up begrudgingly paying me enough for new wheels. Since factory replacement 5x5.5 steelies aren't cheap, I ended up buying a used set off a friend and used the rest of the reimbursement to get the old wheels repaired and refinished. Fortunately a couple years ago I found a small tire shop with good, honest folk. I've become a repeat customer and they have noticed that too, I've gotten good deals and discounts a few times!
They flattened the steel wheels mounting surface? Wow! I’m glad you eventually found a competent shop. They’re out there, but sometimes the journey to find them can be very rough. Yikes man!
And this is why I have been forced into being the competent journeyman mechanic that I am. Too often burned by allegedly professional outfits so now I look after myself my family and friends. I just need a bigger space then I can have more and do more.
Good for you! I’ve struggled with space myself. But to have your repairs done right by yourself is huge!
As a mechanic for 45 years I've seen so much of this crap. Hey if you break it be a pro and fix it ! I recently had new tires put on my 2011 RAM. By PEP boys. The musta used the most powerful impact wrench ever made to my lug nuts ! Ended up breaking about half of the bolts to get them off. Took literally 2 days to get done ! I brought them all back to the same PEP boys and tossed them on the service counter and ask for Benny, the guy who did the tires so I could very politely tell him to take each and every nut and bolt and slowly as to no do major damage to his asshole place beach one as far up his ass he can get then, no use for penetration oil or motor oil is to be used. Then a lovely young woman, tiny and petite came up and smiles at me and announced she is Benny.........I just proceeded to walk out with my nuts in my hand, got to my truck and cried !
Wow! You broke half if them! Sheesh man. That’s crazy! I agree. If you break it, then let me know and fix it. Sheesh you his have a lot of stories with this subject. Makes me sad and upset to hear. But I do appreciate you sharing✌🏼
I've had my studs and lug nuts cross threaded before, but I've never seen anything like this....amazing, and obviously not in a good way. I once had a shop that left my oil drain plug loose and it was leaking bad. Took it back to get them to fix it and they acted like it was my fault. It's unbelievable what people do to others and think they can get away with it. Good job getting this fixed! I'd try to get some kind of restitution from that shop if i were them. Thanks for sharing!
Sheesh man the oil plug story was crazy too! I’ll follow up with you guys if progress is made with a shop who did this. Unbelievable indeed David. Most welcome. ✌🏼
This is why I never let anyone touch my car. Especially those shady ass mechanic.
10-4 on that boss👌🏼
My shop would instantly terminate a goober for doing such butchery. We do great work with integrity and we work by appointment only . We ain’t cheap and we turn people away almost everyday. Good shops still exist but they are few and far between.
@@prevost8686 They’re are indeed many good shops still out there! Glad to hear tires one of them! This industry will always be plagued by these issues. But build yourself up a good reputation and and you should always have a steady stream of customers👍🏼
This shop should be held accountable.
I will follow up with my friend with the situation. Hopefully I can report back someday day when / if I hear something. Completely agree!
I used to stack up a bunch of washers and then impact a lug nut on and it would pull the new stud right on through....both ways get the the job done!
That works too! Thanks for top tip!
I absolutely love your videos and your handwork is truly admirable. I was wondering, do you sell any of these or are planning to in the future?

That old tube had a TR150 valve stem which was hand bendable, I like the old tubes more because they were heavier and are good to keep for things like swimming or snow tubing.
Was this stovalls in tennessees wrecker before?
I checked Stovall’s paint job and no I don’t think so. I was able to find to company who had lil tugger with his current paint job and that tow company is still in business in California. (Dumb luck I found an original business card inside the cab) 😉

That is with gobbes of diesel in so yah. And starting your tractor about the last thing ya'll do if it isn't leaking IS REMOVE IT AND THE RADIATOR. The only thermostat in the world without a bolt on top. And what in heavens name are you doing to the bushes?

This looks similar to a 1990s Lincoln town car, especially the trunk areas and door panels! Did Lincoln and Oldsmobile share parts back then?!
I highly doubt Ford was sharing parts with General Motors but some days you do wonder😏
When GM tried to revived the big car 91 to 96 with the Olds 98, Chevy Caprice, Buick Roadmaster and even the Bonneville I think the Olds was the nicest
Another enjoyable video and great fit with the Husky. Keep it up and stay silly. 🤪🤠👍

"looks like they should fit" - what I thought of chinese engine mounts that I bought for my Mercury. Only a drill, angle grinder and different bolts were required to make them fit.
Oof. Yeah anything coming Asia will always have me doubting it’s “plug and play” so to speak. 🙃
Good thing Husky made that exactly for that purpose... fit great. I'd luv a service truck to mobilize my tools. Good thing ya didn't burn her down! Keep it up.
Will do!
Those rims aren't stock on that car. The ninety-eights didn't come with those until 94 I think.
Great videos! I'm about to dive into a 77 longbed that has been in my wife's family since it was new. It is a 5 speed with the 20R, but it's been sitting close to 20 years. Thankful that it's a dry climate in N. Cali. and there has been no rodent invasion because stray cats sleep under it most nights and when it's extremely hot out. Turned the fly so I know it's not seized. Where would you suggest starting?
Oh wow you lucked out it being in a dry environment! First before starting I would get a hold of a fire extinguisher. Very cheap insurance policy. Even if it’s a small one. Verify oil and coolant levels. If possible take off valve cover and rotate the engine completely by hand and verify the valves are not stuck. They should all actuate. Will take a few revolutions to verify. Bring a new valve gasket. Highly doubt the old one will re-seal. Take spark plugs out. Try to put oil or spray oil into the spark plugs if possible. It will lube up your cylinder walls. I use a 1 gallon garden weed sprayer with a 50/50 diesel / oil mix. Disconnect coil and crank the engine over with starter. This should prime the oil pump and build up oil pressure. Easier for the engine to spin faster without compression to prime the oil pump. Before putting valve cover back on you should see oil squirting at the valve train. This means the oil pump is working and primed. Put valve cover back on and install spark plugs. Disconnect old fuel lines/pump. Drain all the old gas out from your tank…if there is any left haha. There should be a drain plug on the bottom of the tank like mine. Try to purge the fuel lines. Put fresh gas in tank. Preferably mixed gas (32:1 ratio should work.) This ensures the carb and engine will have oil lubrication protection for the initial start. Then try to crank the engine over with the carb feed fuel line disconnected (if it’s a mechanical pump. ) Might be electric I think 77 may have been a change over year. Try to purge that line until the gas looks clear. Reconnect the fuel line. To prime the carb fill the bowl up with gas. Get a condiment squeeze bottle or something small to shoot the gas mixed gas preferably again) down the vent. I’m not familiar with the stock Toyota carb(the one with all the vacuum hoses attached. ) But there should be a vent somewhere. Squirt a few shots down the carb, put your safety glasses on and your a go for startup. Our Yoda didn’t have a chance to start as the timing chain was soooo stretched and the distributor was jacked. But hopefully you have success! Thanks for dropping by and wish I was there!
Could have thrown some paint on the wheel when all the rubber was off - would have been easy not to have to mask things off.
Yeah….but that would make everything else look bad lol. Good point though!
HI SIR, IF THE ODOMETER NO RUNNING ? BUT SPEED IS RUNNING HOW YA ?
