Breaking Large Tire Beads with a Harbor Freight Bead Breaker

  • I am surprised, I didn't break it. Mostly, I've discovered that Harbor Freight non power tools survive my abuse well enough. It was a lot of wrestling on these large tires, but doing it myself, gave me time to paint the rims and do it right instead of quick and dirty. Stay tuned for what tractor is jumping up to 38s!

Cheap dish soap around the bead is your best friend. And won’t hurt the tire like oil will

For future tire dismounting/mounting adventure try a heavy mixture of water and dish soap (heavy on the dish soap) around tire bead, makes it a lot easier. Been there, done that, a bunch.

Hey, I didn’t know HF carried bead breakers? I guess it’s time to go buy one!

That little toy has eluded my radar. Might have to keep that in mind for future problems. I have become aware of the importance of studying the profile of a rim before putting a tire on. Knowing what way to press on the tire to get it to seat when putting air in is a game changer in itself.

Yes, had little trouble getting the bead on square in the next video.

Bought one identical to it about 3 years ago before HF carried them.. mine is made from the same chinesium though. Have probably changed a dozen tires with it from 18.4x42” down to 15” auger tires. Works every time, no more using the backhoe bucket or pallet forks to try and tear the bead off of the rim.

I bought one of those tools last year, but I got mine online (not from Harbor Freight). I bought the one I did because it was designed to be used with an electric or air ratchet, which is nice. They certainly are a great tool and save a lot of work.

I'm sure you don't have tire stores calling you constantly trying to hire you to change tires but you got the job done. That's all that matters. 🤣The bead breaker was a handy tool.

You'll find it works just fine with a standard 1/2 drive ratchet.. 8.8 is next to the lowest grade metric bolt, there are also 10.9 and 12.9. 10.9 is roughly equivalent to a Grade 8 SAE bolt.. and a squirt bottle of water with dish soap helps a lot breaking them down...

1 3/16 inches is only about half a percent bigger than 30mm, which is probably the "official" size of that bolt head, though harbor freight chinesium isn't known for its precision ;)

To the most cynical, driest sense of humor on a farming channel. Great video.
Harbor Freight used to be the tool store one would avoid and laugh at people who bought there. Now? It is a delight to go there and spend some time with my crafty woman as we drool over all the tools we really don't need but want all the more.

Auto parts store has tire soap. Mix with water or use straight to block air leaks when mounting. 8.8 is equivalent to grade 5

So. That converts to a 30mm. Your tire iron technique to get the rim the rest of the way out is wrong(your using the wrong end of the tool). You also need to be mindful of the drop point of the rim.
