    23:28, regarding Dr. Knox being a bad dad, there's a bit cut in the anime where it's explained that Dr. Knox actually seperated from his family cause he was suffering from PTSD after he came back from the war

    They've never implied Ling is dead, but his body has been taken over. And of course Bradley wouldn't be so surprised as he is the exact same as Ling, an Homunculi in a humans body

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 11 місяців тому +35

      The difference is, as Bradly mentioned, the battle inside of him was so brutal and horrific, that he isn't sure WHICH soul is in control. Wrath, the original Bradly, or one of the countless other souls making up the Philosopher stone. Whoever was strongest survived, and we never learn which it is.

    • @FeyPhantom
      @FeyPhantom 11 місяців тому +17

      @Jirodyne Yeah, just to specify further, all the souls in Wrath's philosopher's stone killed each other until only one was left - the single one he has lived with since then. On the other hand, Greed is a human-based Homunculous who still retains hundreds/thousands of souls inside, including Ling.

    • @operationstratos1013

      @@FeyPhantom Indeed. Hence why Wrath is the only homunculus that ages ------ he is only ONE soul.

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 11 місяців тому

      @@operationstratos1013 No true. Wrath ages cause he is in a human body, the same as Greed.
      The other Homunculus aren't humans at all, they are deformed creatures that just look like humans. For them, the Philosopher stone is their literal core being. They ARE the Philosopher stone, and without it they die. But Wrath and Greed can not heal, they can not regenerate, because they aren't built from Philosopher stones. They are human bodies, just with Philosopher Stones implanted into them. They are effectively Humans, but mind controlled by the soul of a Philosopher Stone, and not actually a philosopher stone only as their very core. Which is why when the stone is removed, their body dies and regrows from the stone. But as we'll see later in the anime, during a spoiler, a stone is removed from someone who is a human implanted with one and it just removes the mind control entity, and the body regains control and exists without it.
      So wrath having 1 soul, or billions of souls, does NOT matter in making him mortal or not. It's HOW he is created, namely with a human body as a HOST.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 11 місяців тому

      @@GOTGames yeah, I'm getting to this late, but the reason why everyone is acting so somber about Ling is that even if he's still in there, Greed has primary access to the body. so like, when Ed keeps calling him Ling, and when Ed insists he's still alive, at first it was wishful thinking, and a lot of the other characters who haven't seen proof probably do think Ling is dead. but even if Ling could pass on a note, or speak to Bradley once, he's still mostly trapped in his head while Greed takes his body for a joyride. the idea of fully getting Ling back might not have much precedent either, since the idea of this situation is a bit of a novelty in the first place.

  • @kevinbell5674
    @kevinbell5674 11 місяців тому +95

    Normally, Greed or Ling would have had to kill the other in order for one of them to gain control. However, because Ling voluntarily gave up his body that no longer became necessary and Ling's consciousness as maintained it's self-awareness within Greed. It's not the best metaphor, but it's like Greed is in the driver seat and Ling is in the passenger seat waiting for his chance to take the wheel.

      Also the difference in Wrath and Greed's main characteristics. The souls within Wrath had a fight to the death until the most wrathful was the sole survivor, but Greed would want to maintain as many souls inside him as possible, so he keeps Ling even if the smart decision would be to kill him anyway.

    About Ling/Greed. Bradley was shocked that Ling spoke through Greed because the original host is pretty much always snuffed out. The fact that Ling spoke is a testament to his strength of will. But Bradley dismissed it because he's doing exactly what Ling told him not to. He's underestimating him. To the humunculi, humans are lower lifeforms. In his mind, it's crazy that Ling spoke, but he's still just a human. There's no way he'll actually win in the end. Kind like seeing a dog turn a knob and open a door. Wow. That was pretty smart for a dog. It's still just a dog, though. You won't expect it to start reading and writing. For lack of a better example.

    I love the audacity of Mustang asking Wrath directly if he was the killer!! I love Mustang!!! 🙌
    I love Winry and Ed together. It’s maturing so much that’s why they also look a bit older. Yes!!!! Greed is back!! And trust me, it gets better!!!! 👌 not overlooked. They just don’t think anything of a mere human. Greed does know about Ling, but he also doesn’t care to share, but he wants to be in charge. The dub vs sub war is mainly due to the old days. Anime was a practically niche concept in the west with a small fan base. As a result, western studios that acquired the rights to these shows had relatively no budget or notoriety so they couldn't afford or convince good voice actors to work for them. This meant hiring amateurs or even having their English script writers to voice the lines themselves. This is why so many older dubs are bad and it was that way for as recent as the late 2000s. Granted some of the amateurs got better over time and there were some pros that were fans themselves and were willing to work for less, like Ed's voice actor.
    Nowadays, anime is a big deal in the west and those studios have a means to hire solid performers. People that still participate in the "dub vs sub" nonsense are likely still influenced by the old stigma.
    There are some other caveats as well. Anime characters are bit more expressive and over the top which isn't natural for western characters. It comes off more natural in Japanese (even though Japanese people don't act like that either) since that's the language and culture it was made for. When it comes to english dub they're forced to act out the lines in the same manner as their Japanese counterpart in order to match the expressions of the animation. Unfortunately, it comes off as unnatural in English and can be a little cringy.
    There's also the argument that since you don't understand Japanese, when you hear it, your mind has a bias towards it sounding better or cooler. However Japanese natives and bilingual people will sometimes have the same criticisms of the original Japanese dub being over the top and cringe or that there's very little difference in quality between the two dub versions.
    At the end of the day, as long as you can suspend disbelief and take the shows for what they are, then you should be able to enjoy most dubs (with the exception of a lot of pre-2010s anime when they didn't have good budgets or actors available)

    Something I love about the previous episode into this one is that we see the heroes thoroughly whipped. At this moment, they could gather the entire cast vs Father and they'd overwhelmingly lose. And that is before considering Wrath, the other homunculi, and an entire nation's military would be against them as well. They have to hold back and play along with the bad guys because they don't have much of a choice right now. This is incredibly rare to see, and helps drive home how uphill of a battle our protagonists are in for.

It should clear up a lot of what doesn't make sense to you here! Also I hope my comments don't come off as being a know it all asshole! They're fully intended to praise your interest and remind of things you've been introduced to so you aren't losing a good experience because you're too confused.
    -I love that Winry is flattered just that Ed is calling to check in her for a change.
    - Greed is bae. He is hubby. Long live the best homunculus. But yes, it's implied that Greed was openly able to converse with Ling inside him since Ling asked for that message in Xingese to be passed to Lan Fan. Ed mentioned at the end of the last episode he could tell Ling was still alive inside Gr3ed because when he mentioned Lan Fan, "Greed" stopped defending himself and Ed landed a hit on him.
    - Knox's situation is so sad... He was the one who did autopsies on the dead during the war. When he came back he had severe PTSD and almost attacked his wife in the middle of a night terror. He called for a divorce to make sure he couldn't hurt her or his son.
    - Ling told Ed he wasn't an Alchahestrist, he was just pursuing the stone itself. He also mentions he knows nothing of alchemy when Ed tries to explain human transmutation.
    - Dub/sub arguments make no sense to me. I watch sub first because it's released first. And then I always do a rewatch in dub because it takes less effort to process things auditorily and I can focus on visual details more.
    - Actually your idea of what you would do in the story gets addressed to a degree! It's a bit in the future, but they do talk about all their options!

    Ling is not an alchehistris, but if you recall scars brother did reasurch into alchemy and alchehistry and tattoo scar possesses is the result of that reasurch. Though scar only possesses the arm of destruction where his brother possessed the arm of creation aswell. The tattoo aside from where it draws power from is just a transmutation circle tattooed into his arm. There are several people who etch their circles into themselves or their gloves. Kimbly has 2 halves of his aray one on either palm so he can clap transmute, Marco has arays on each of his palms but we haven't seen what they do yet. Mustang has his aray on his sparking gloves though he did carve it into the back of his hand to cook lust, Armstrong and Issac mcdoogle (the freezer) if you recall him from ep1 both have their arays on their gauntlets so they just have to punch their target. There are afew others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

    The thing about Humonculus, is they're created using a philosophers stone at their core, and the stone consists of thousands of souls. Bradley mentioned it in a previous episode when he was talking about how he was created. When the philosophers stone was added to his blood stream, the souls fought for dominance over the host. It's why the stone has a chance of killing its host while the souls battle for dominance.
    With Envy, he mentioned the souls within him no longer had identity, that they had been swept up by the ocean of souls within him. Envy also has a body that was created from scratch, as opposed to originally being human.
    With Bradley, one soul fought for dominance over his body and eventually won. Bradley was originally human and became a Philosophers Stone.
    With Greeling, it's interesting. It's not so much a battle of dominance of the body as it is a partnership. Greed didn't need to fight for control over Ling's body because Ling wanted the stone. Chances are, that not fighting over the body is the reason Ling's soul is still intact. Greed didn't have to basically destroy Ling's identity to gain control of the body.

      FUN FACT: about the dubbed version of this. Vic Mignogna (Ed), Caitlin Glass (Winry), Troy Baker (Mustang), Laura Bailey (Lust) and Todd Haberkorn (Ling) often dub anime together and they'll actually sit down with the translation and the animation and figure out how to best say what needs to be said that matches the anime as closely as possible. This group (or members of it) also worked on anime like Ouran Highschool Host Club and Vampire Knight. If you ever see their names in the line-up for an anime dub, you know it's going to be done pretty decently.

    Greed and Wrath are both human-based homunculi. What’s interesting is how the takeover happened; it’s in character for their sin. Whereas Wrath had to kill all the souls until the most wrathful is left to possess the body, Greed kept Ling’s soul as some sort of collection.

    Remember the context of how Father looks at humans. They're a resource, not even worth taking the time to consider in regards to how they think and feel, only how they can be utilized for something else. It'd be a burden and waste of his effort to systematically exterminate them for the mere sake of being petty and evil. While the Homunculi certainly look at humans with disdain and contempt, they still follow what Father dictates. Don't forget that the homunculi also caused an uprising in the East at Liore where Ed and Al more or less made their story debut after the first episode. It certainly wasn't as large as the war in Ishval but they clearly had a purpose in doing it. The homunculi certainly revel in their task of causing these issues and watching humans kill one another, but it's clearly not their endgame.
    It's not likely that the issue of Ling is being glossed over. Probably more so that the process by which Greed was remade is very new to all involved. Even more than Wrath, Greed is an oddity as we have a homunculus that was made by Father, killed, re-absorbed by Father, and then implanted into a living human to be reborn. It's not likely they have any precedent for what will happen given Ling gave up his body freely whereas, in Wrath's case, they went through several subjects to finally get the soul to bond, suggesting even Father has limits to his own understanding of Alchemy.
    There is an old saying in that those who are wise speak very little, whereas those who are ignorant are often full of confidence. There is a parallel that happens when you gain knowledge in that the more you learn about things, the more you begin to understand just how much there is out there which you don't know, and likely never will. It becomes a daunting sense that tips the scales of social discourse where when you have someone who truly is brilliant and knows a lot about a subject, they will be hesitant to talk or give advice on it because from their mindset, knowing what they know, compared to what they are aware that they do not know can feel crushing and so they hesitate for fear of being wrong, even though they most certainly know a lot compared to the average person. Take that into consideration with Ed and Al who have seen the truth and have had secrets of the universe given to them, and then Father, who is able to perform alchemy in a way that even they do not understand. Think of the gap in their knowledge given the obvious difference in power between them, and then consider that even Father, despite seeming to act as though he is superior, clearly still does not know how some things work. Those who admit to their ignorance and seek to overcome it shall be granted knowledge for their effort, while those who pridefully boast to already know will be made fools in time.

    I think the sub-dub war arises because people say "You have to watch it in this language" and others get triggered to say "It's not outclassing my preference too much so it's not a requirement to enjoy the show"
    I generally watch sub. Few shows are worth it to me to watch in dub. I know I'll enjoy sub. Dubbed is a gamble; it can be horrendous and it can be a bit better.
    Finding anime in dubbed can be hard so I've just defaulted to watching sub. I really like how Japanese sounds too so that's a bonus.
    FMAB and Death Note are anime I don't mind watching in dub. Do I prefer sub? Yes. Do I mind reactors watching dubbed? No.

    I wouldn’t say they’re putting it on the back burner, but I think they recognize they would lose. Mustang can’t gather his people because the homunculi got there first. Winry is in Rush Valley and Bradley’s knowledge of her implies she’s being watched (he also knows their hometown and they can’t evacuate them). They also have at least extensive control of the military (they don’t know exactly how extensive), the homunculi themselves are incredibly powerful, and Father seems to be able to switch their alchemy off on a whim, taking away their most powerful abilities. So, Ed wants to learn about this new method of alchemy and Mustang wants to extend his reach in the military as much as possible to gain allies. They need to move carefully so that everyone they love isn’t killed, but they’re still working toward the same end goal.

So both Greed and Ling reside in the same body. It's like a JJK Yuuji-Sukuna thing. And While Greed tries to be in control of the body constantly, Ling popped out to shout at Wrath in this episode, so we see that he has the power to retake control of his body even if it's just momentarily, for now.

    In fma there are details that you only realize seeing a second or more times. Did you notice how Greed now prefers high places?
    That scene with Bradley is great. Bradley was only surprised that Ling could take control for a few seconds just to retaliate for his offense. Ling is a person who is very proud of his origin and his condition, he hates when humans are belittled, so Bradley's insult was enough to break that barrier.
    As for Bradley, he didn't really care, because Ling is jus a human, and humans are dumb for him. But he should still care, I mean, taking King Bradley by surprise isn't anything.
    And why is Greed so calm? Well, I think the answer is even easier, she likes the boy. He repeats more times than necessary how cool that body is and how "ambitious" Ling was. He's just comfortable with it. There are also things that tell us a lot about him: he doesn't fight women and he doesn't tell lies, things that old Greed also stood for, so if they were really Greed himself, that's what I'd say it's him. a homunculus very different from the others.
    I was one of those who defended your theory that Armstrong is Pride, it seems logical and interesting to me. But now we know that it is good, and of course, if he is pure of heart.
    Ed and Winry, 🥰🥰 they are so cute together. I didn't realize they were both growing until it was too obvious, points to you.
    As for the dubbing / sub. In general I don't care. I usually watch dubbed anime because it's more comfortable, because sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy, I even watch them even though the dubbing isn't that good. When I saw fma;b for the first time I saw it with its original Latin dubbing, and it wasn't very good to say it 😅, and even so I wanted to see it in Spanish, then I saw it in Japanese and English thanks to reactions like yours.
    I must say that the English dubbing has its golden moments, and I think Ed's voice actor does a wonderful job.
    In 2021 here in Mexico fma;b was redoubled, with the original voices of Ed and Al, and it's wonderful, I must say that we finally have a Spanish dubbing worthy of this anime 😁

    Gonna be honest...I can't wait to see GOT's reaction to episode 37...it should be a lot of fun (you know you know).
    Also gonna make it clear since GOT was mentioning Ed and Roy's composure (or lack of): Ed is about 16 or 17 while Roy is in his late 20s to mid 30s so he also has the whole age factor as a reason why he's more easily composed/keeps his emotions in check a bit better (though he has exceptions). Hell he's roughly the same age as Hughs if I'm right and they were both at least in their 20s/late teens in the Ishbal war flashbacks you see (granted Hughs looks older for his age, especially as far as anime characters go where they generally look younger than they are) and said war occurred 10 years before the present timeline/a bit less from the very first episode).

    Not a bad analogy about it's like screaming at tsunami, though it's closer to fighting a bunch of werewolves being ordered around by a lich. The werewolves CAN be killed If you're strong and persistent enough, or through finding what they're weak to (silver bullet) but the Lich can only be killed by finding and destroying it's phylactery, a single weakness that's the sole method of killing it. They have yet to find the silver bullet for the Homunculi and they have no way of even beginning to take Father down.
    The reason they're so calm is because of the scariest thing the monsters they're fighting are intelligent, they have stated their terms and have guaranteed their safety as long as they co operate therefore they know that none of them are in any immediate danger as long as they don't do anything rash

    Homunculus taking body of the another human is actually first time, that is the reason why everyone is so chill about that. They have no information about whether it is ok or not. All homunculus except Bradley was created with their own artificial body. They can't age and they can easily regenerate the damage that their body takes.
    Bradley and NEW Greed is different
    Bradley - human turned into homunculi. He has insane physical capabilities of the homunculi (enhanced body) but it is basically human body. If you noticed, Bradley is the only homunculi that ages. And he can not regenerate at the same rate as ordinary homunculus. Also notice what Ling said about Bradley when they met each other. Unlike other ordinary homunculus, Bradley has a human presence. I.e. he has one soul and human body, not the artificial one created out of Philosopher's stone. Philosopher's stone just turned Bradley's normal human body to enhanced one, So technically he is not a homunculi, he is still human
    New Greed - homunculi embedded into human body. Greed's Philosopher's stone changed Ling's body in a way as Bradley's case with a difference that the stone that changed Bradley used its power only to restructure his body while Greed's stone had a huge amount of soul that was enough not only rebuild Ling's body, but also to bring all that souls that create Greed into Ling's body. So basically Greed is parasite aka Venom from Marvel in Ling's body. Tbh, Ling right now is more homunculi than Bradley lol
    To put it simply
    Pride, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Sloth, Old Greed - ordinary homunculus, each of them has countless souls in them because stone is the core of their body
    Wrath(Bradley) - human with enhanced body of a homunculi, but without stone in it. Has only one soul, and it's Bradley's own
    New Greed(Greed + Ling) - enhanced human body that contains Ling's soul + Greed's personality hence countless souls of the stone that came with him. Difference from ordinary ones is stone is not the core of the body but rather part of it. Btw, Greed can use stone to regenerate Ling's body as ordinary homunculi does, but remember Ling's body is still of a human

    Greed and wrath are the only two human based sins created by father. Wrath needed to be a single soul to age properly for appearances so he lacks regeneration. I personally always prefer sub because of a few reasons. For starters both english and japanese are foreign languages for me, both of them I know to some extent and I'm trying to learn more. So I just prefer the original dub in that case because it often is tailored for the culture the series/movie did get made in and I like learning about cultures. Yes, I do watch movies that came out originally in english with original english dub and my mother tongue subs as well, and bless cinemas in my country that they often have that option. Second, well, I do learn a lot from japanese dub when it comes to language. I do like to practice it a lot so I tend to go for japanese language in games a lot (I'm mostly playing jrpgs and some chinese gatchas but if the game was not asian I probably would use english dub. But sometimes it is easier for me to understand japanese then english, like I did have a lot trouble in FFXV because of the accents they used in the translation, the japanese dubbing literaly saved me from not understanding anything so there's that. Genshin too is a little easier for me to understand in japanese for some reason then in english). I am not a fan of dubs in my mother tongue because they are simply very bad when it comes to anime. Cartoons of other origin go quite nice or kids shows, but for some reason dubs of anything more serious sound so out of place and stiff in my mother tongue it is hard to hear. And I often noticed they had a huge troubles in translations, were not very... truthfull to the original (And I do not mean some minor changes, I mean adding monologues when there are none or changing characters gender and relationship from two boys being friends to girl having a crush on a boy, like how do you mess up the translation so badly if characters wear gender-specific uniforms???) And our country has a looong history of translating japanese shows not from japanese but from other translations (like english or german) and calling it a day, so I just do not trust them. Maybe just the language, may be the drasticly different culture make the dubs sound off too. There are a few exceptions and it is getting slowly a little better but still is far from being good in my opinion. If I had to chose between my native language dub and english dub of a japanese show I'll take english without a doubt though. But If I am able to chose between japanese and english I take japanese because it is just in my situation more beneficial for me (not because I think english one is bad, I personally think english dubs actually are quite nice qualitywise, it's just that I have a lot of other ways to practice english and am more interested in japanese)

      I think your comment highlights why, for English speakers, many of us enjoy the English dub of Fullmetal Alchemist (03 and Brotherhood). They were some of the first anime that had actually good voice ACTING and not just line-reading, along with adapting the story as faithfully as possible. Many English dubs before them had the weird replacement lines and changes so "American kids won't get confused about the culture". Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the weirdness you experienced in the past in your own language's dubs was because of the English dub.

    • @tsubasahaneno
      @tsubasahaneno 11 місяців тому +1

      @@FeyPhantom Yeah, I am honestly glad that english dubs are getting a lot better and have a lot more heart poured in them ^^ In my country the only japanese stuff that got actually nicely acted dubs are few Ghibli movies, and that's about it (and even, most of them do not even have proper dub, they have a lector. And I hate the lector versions of anything with passion. It is often the english dub, only sometimes the original, but quiet and over that there is this one guy with deep, monotone voice reading the translation. In said monotone voice. As if he was reading something like an audiobook in a very emotionless way. Like a narration in a nature documentary but with even less emotions. But it is over a movie or a tv series. I hate it so much 😓). Even the dubs a lot of fans still hold very dear and call good when looked at by someone without nostalgia are nowhere near the quality of english FMA (I think this english dub is really amazing btw). The issues in my language deffinitely come from some of the older, not really good english dubs but I am mad at studios in my own country who decided to literaly do not even the bare minimum and didn't even try to get it translated from original or cared enough to check what they even were translating. They are the reasons for my severe trust issues when it comes to translations. Honestly at this point I trust the english dubs a lot more then my native language ones 😂
      I forgot to mention it earlier, but despite me myself prefering to watch sub I think dubs overall are very important, they give the chance to enjoy the show to people who have trouble reading fast, or overall reading, or just plain don't like subs and would not check out the movie/series without a dub, so it's good when there are both options and everyone can choose which one they prefer ^^ Hopefully, one day, my country will start caring more, and we'll have more stuff avaible in some better quality dubs ^^

      @tsubasahaneno I hope so too! I completely agree that dubs in different languages allow people who would otherwise not watch the show experience it.
      I, too, enjoy watching subs quite a bit and almost always choose them over English dubs even when the dubs are good, but I can enjoy both and I'm just grateful there is that choice for each person to watch the way they want to.
