Sloth mas mentioned in the second arc that they had him digging holes underground, when i first saw this anime i was confused, but when i saw it the second time and knew what was going l heard envy talk about him when she was in the room with the chimeras

"We don't have the LUXURY of discrimination here." I fucking love that line. Racism is something she sees as a luxury that you can afford only when you want to separate people. In her environment, they can't. She sees the strength of having many different perspectives. She's the northen wall of briggs who doesn't bend, but will include anything and everything to make it stronger.

Ed's "I can't answer that" is actually a damn good way to answer without answering, especially with someone as smart as Olivier. She's a damn _general_ and there are very few people that could order someone to not answer her questions. And every single one is in Central Command. By saying he can't answer her questions, he's telling her that _someone_ in Central Command or even above it is involved. It's why she keeps moving on with her questions. She's basically using them to define the "shape" of whatever it is Ed can't talk about.

Scar's brother used his alchemy to remove his own arm and attach it to Scar. And last episode Kimblee said he saw Scar's brother screaming in agony and losing tons of blood, so Scar's brother is definitely dead.

Olivier is the character who is like "So what if you could be court martialed? It's not like you're the only one who's committed a war crime."
In the military, you get promotions to higher ranks, usually due to achievements. Could be completing a training course or an act of valour, like saving a trainee's life when he accidently shoots himself. Fulman's more of a paper pusher, logistics, there's already alot of competition for promotions in that sector.
Now that he's stuck knocking of icicle's like a recruit, there's not gonna be many opportunities to get anymore promotions.
His best bet would probably be trying to get permission to take whatever special course those guys in all white took.
Basically, he no longer has a chance of getting that nice cushy high ranked desk job.
Man I love Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong.

Major General Armstrong is quite a bit higher up the ladder than Ed, commander of the fort, as well as the particular individual they bypassed Command to meet with. She has ALL the leverage in this situation. No obligation to share shit with them, and all rights to make them spill their entire life's story if they don't want to be turned away and possibly have a complaint filed against them for said bypassing of Command. The Briggs way is not exactly the fair way, after all.
fun part is ed literally learn the "i can't answer that question" from major armstrong during aftermath of 5th laboratory and used it on his sister

You saw sloth for a few seconds in episode 14 starting at the 20:42 mark. It was while we first saw Bradley visiting Father. A chained-up (first edition💀) Greed said hi to his homunculi siblings and asked where Sloth is, so Lust answered that he would have loved to be there, but that they have to keep him working. It was the same scene where Greed got lowered into the boiling pot and then got reabsorbed by Father. Well, that scene was jam-packed with new reveals (even about Bradley actually being Wrath), so it's totally understandable to have missed it.
Don't know if you get why Ed couldn't transmute the big guy's automail. The steps of alchemy here are analysis, deconstruction and reconstruction so since Ed didn't knew the chemical composition he failed the analysis step and so wasn't able to deconstruct it in the first place.
Considering Miles has both of his arms imma guess he's not Scar's brother lol 😂 it is a minor detail to forget that Scar literally has his brother's right arm graphted to his body. Well not a minor detail but easily forgotten on a first watch
Also Miles is only half Ishvalen and outside race he looks nothing like Scar’s brother

Luke can now appreciate how hard it was for those who first watched FMAB when it first aired in 2009-2010. Waiting for each new episode every week especially if they never read the manga and dont know what to expect
So, when the Elrics suggested that the military took Falman off the Career track, it essentially means that his career in the military is over, he can stay on, but he will never be promoted.
About the North, that's still very much the case to this day. Here in Alaska up near the arctic circle, everyday is a struggle when its cold. Breathing hurts, machines don't work, and energy is at a premium as supplies still aren't as plentiful or regular as in most places. It breeds a certain type of response in people.
you can assume scar's brother is dead, I mean the doctors only took the injured to shelter, if he was alive a guy with one arm is not exactly fine to be be left there unless he was dead when they found them.

When you're taken off the career track, basically you got fired without getting fired. You've been put in a position that you had absolutely no goals for and you have to start over, or your in a dead-end position with NO opportunity to grow. It's a military thing. Some MOS (military occupational specialties) literally have no opportunity to get promoted.
Yup. You just end up waiting out your time to retire or leave.
This episode is the reason why the Briggs Characters are my favorite characters. Badass, awesome, smart, strong. If I were in the world of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, I would join the Briggs Army for sure!
The Military Career Track is pretty much like a line of performing duties of recognition to keep on ascending the ranks. Essentially when you are promoted you are often given a new post that requires your expertise or leadership to prove your merits ready for the next promotion. If you are given a promotion but your new post is no better than a corporal's... congrats, you are off the track and your chances of further promotion are at a dead stop.
One thing I love about military dynamics is underlings tend to imitate their leaders. You see this with Olivier. She seems to have Bradley’s affinity to using swords rather than alchemy, and she seems as hardened as he is.
It does seem that many of the soldiers at briggs is giving off a nightswatch in GOT vibe.
Like if you were sent there, you probably were essentially demoted.
Hence why General Armstrong said they all had secrets.
Fort Briggs is an important tactical position as it blocks the only straight pass to Drachma in the North, otherwise its all mountains (According to what ed told ling in rush valley the first time they met)
6:24 -- This takes place in a universe in which there are no global communication networks, no televison and no Internet. Hell, so far in this series we haven't even seen an airplane! Of course that in such circumstances very few people in Amestris, aside from zoologists, explorers and geographers, would know about an exotic animal species from a far away country with which there are virtually no cultural exchanges. What makes things even more confusing is the fact that that particular specimen of panda is much smaller than it's supposed to be for its age.
Yeah, Ed's non-answers were pretty telling. I wonder how much Olivier managed to glean from them, but I'm sure she noticed that when asked on whose side Ed was, he didn't give the simplest answer, which is to say on the side of Amestris. (It's been too long since I watched FMAB, maybe she'll actually mention later how much she figured out from it.)

When the original Greed was beneath central and reunited with the other Homunculi they made mention of Sloth. Greed asked where he was, and was told that he was elsewhere and that they had to keep him busy. The only homunculi you have not yet seen is Pride (Or is it?) All others are now accounted for. By the way, fourth gear.
It's cold, more desolate, the weather is unpredictable and deadly. Food is scarce and any animals found there are built to survive. To be able to survive against that, you have to be tough.
The “career track” or also the “command track”… In many militaries and rank structures, for anyone looking to seek a long career… You have goals to meet for promotions, if you fail to get promoted enough times in a row, when you come up for eligibility, you are basically done. Often you are released from service.
This typically applies only for commissioned officers and senior NCOs above the Staff level, that are seeking to be in the command line.
Basically, low level service members don’t have to worry about this, nor do those in some of the higher ranks that are not part of command. They may be in charge of smaller groups and departments, but they don’t have to worry about this.
By command… We are talking those in charge of a military base or head of divisions reporting to the base commander. In the navy, a ship’s captain would be on a command path. Being passed over for command of your own ship enough times can get you dropped from the command path.
Basically anyone looking to have a career that could possibly end up with them on a national defense advisory panel for a president/monarch would be on the command track.
In effect, the ones with ambitions… Not just looking to serve out a basic career until they reach enough time in service to “retire”.
The Major in charge of the vehicle maintenance division isn’t likely on the “career track” even if he serves the required time in service for retirement. (20 years in the USA military)
But the Major working at base command, may be seeking more lofty goals.
I love the "cat" bit. I find it hilarious and have always been glad to see the show use it over and over quite consistently. It's like some kind of meme or small scale urban legend that grows because every time a new character hears it something clicks within the mind establishing a low-resistance path imbuing it with credibility.
"Consistent" might not be fully correct, since Ed does call it a panda when they first meet her, but it could just be the Elrics trying to dumb things down for people who wouldn't know about things like that. Like maybe he knows because he studies more than the average person or because Xing is geographically closer to Resembool, but also knows the average citizen wouldn't know what a panda is.
Or maybe he thinks pandas are a kind of cat.

Generally speaking, the environment has everything to do with why northerners are treated as they are in fiction. When you're in the extreme cold, if you don't have some bulk you're more likely to freeze to death and if you're not fit, then your chances of getting what you need done go down. As for the attitude, when you're in such an extreme environment, your survival comes first and everything else either second or never. Also if your survival is based on the actions of another and vice versa, then you'll create strong bonds which is why northerners that are in groups are shown as tighter than family.
Fun fact about the Panda- I think in Chinese and even other asian languages the word for Panda basically translates to "Cat-Bear".
So I think all the cat comments is a semi reference to that. Or asian cultures just flat-out see Pandas as big dumbass Cat-creatures lol.
the only sin you haven't OFFICIALLY met is Pride. You hear him talking to Wrath/Bradley in one episode, but you won't see him until episode 40.

Pride is missing
Something to keep in mind about the sin of sloth: it's not a synonym for "lazy". The sin is having the ability to succeed to but choosing not to. Sloth knows what he's supposed to do, but keeping that in mind, while simple and easy, is too much. He could figure out where he is, but why bother when he could just not, even if he needed to. Sloth could do whatever he wants and has every ability necessary to do it, but he will always choose to sleep unless coerced into action.
Court Martials almost always end up with the firing squad. I'd see why Ed would be hesitant.
Major General Armstrong understands how military authority works If she commands a solider to not talk about something and even a normal General asks him about it it is expected that he does not say anything ... and the general when is not given answers understands that someone above him ordered so ... or there is something else that is preventing him from being told. which is what Olivier picks up on and why she just continues her questions when tells her "I cant answer that" if he says that it can only mean the mum order came from Central command and pretty high up ... and with the character they shoved she can assume there is more to it than just that
You got the quickest of glimpses of Sloth in the same episode when Greed took a very hot bath.
Pride is the only one you haven't seen, only heard.
I just want to mention that I don't recall if people know how actual pandas look like but that little one is being mistaken for a cat mainly because it isn't the size it should. May explains that that's do to malnourishment.
I always attributed it to the ignorance of the west. Father tends to try to keep amestris more or less sheltered, they didn’t even know about alkahestry

Olivier is smart. While you've already forgotten what Ed told them at first, she remembered. Court Martial. Military secret then. Can't tell them what Sloth is or who sent it. So it's related to the Military then.
The term for these "set in the weird past" style stories is "alternate history fiction" or "historic fantasy", etc. Which term is used depends on where you live, as well as what kind of fiction it is. That sort of thing. There may be additional terms, but those two are the most common I've come across as far as writing terms, etc.
If you remember, envy had previously mentioned that father had sloth digging a tunnel during a conversation with lust, sloth was still digging that tunnel when he accidentally ran into the lowest level of fort Briggs. You'll learn what that tunnel is in the next episode or 2. Sloth himself is incredibly durable and despite his attitude never tires out. Major general Armstrong is amazing, she handles everything that comes her way with ruthless efficiency. You've now officially met all of the humuculi execpt pride.

I'm going to nip this in the bud right here and now. Scar's brother is dead. Dead dead. Dead as dead can be. He was seriously injured when Kimbley attacked Ishval and died after giving Scar his arm. Also, Scar's brother doesn't have a name. He's never given one in ANY adaptation.
I love that they kept him nameless bc scar mentions that ishvalan names are sacred. We don’t know scar’s ishvalan name, his brothers’, or presumably Miles’s so I think it’s fitting

@@keyblademasterclarkMiles is his real name but he could still have an Ishvalan one, I think that's what the comment you replied to meant, families that share multiple cultures often give their children a second name or a nickname that has significance to their origins.
Ed almost never flaunts his authority when he doesn't need to, so it only really comes up when he needs to pay someone (like Sheska) or when he's being a little shit to random officers. So, it makes sense that you forget about it until it gets brought up again.
There was foreshadowing that sloth would make an appearance he was mentioned & shown twice even the orders he was given.
Something I do want to point out is how eyes are actually pretty important in Fmab. Somebody made a video on it a while ago but eyes hold heavy symbolism in this show in particular

Ed comparing genocide to a small countryside being ransacked and two people being murdered during the commission of the genocide perfectly showcases his age. The two things aren't comparable and one led directly to the other two. The oppressed not looking at their oppressor with kind eyes is not the same as the oppressor looking further down on the oppressed bc of their reaction to the oppression... That's manipulative and the perfect way to get out of the guilt of killing an entire nation and race of people.
The people of resembol had literally nothing to do with the ishvalan war of extermination. What you're doing would be like blaming Poland for what the nazis did in ww2.
It's not just anime with the one eye thing. A running gag in the military is to have your beret droop so far down that it covers an eye. So you get a regular one and one a bit bigger when you feel like being a punk in formation.

"I'll make use of any knoledge that I can get my hands on" "you can see this country in a way that others can not. [...] In order to lead, I need someone with your eyes" and "we don't have the luxury of discrimination here"... Olivier Mira Armstrong...lady, you have a point... so much respect🙌
About Sloth... He is there on purpose but discovered by accident... something like that🤷♀️

5:33: In Briggs, its Olivier's way, or the highway. She was not kidding around when she said that one can never know too much, especially in their environment. She doesn't take chances with unknowns. Edward and Alphonse are the ones that came to _her,_ so before she does anything for them, she needs to know specifically what she's going to be getting involved with.
One thing to note is that Tanks don't exist in Amestris as they depend solely on the Fire Power Provided by the State Alchemists. Olivier using technology and knowledge taken from anywhere she can to develop weapons that even non-alchemists can use is taking a step away from Alchemy Centralized Ideology.

The great thing about this series is that everything adds up like a complex puzzle
I'm not sure where you're from, but come up to New England, and you'll see it in action. We're known for being gruff, but caring. We're usually labelled "Acts Mean, is Actually Kind" on those sorts of charts. There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. There is actually something to what you said about the north always being portrayed as harsh. There have actually been studies done about people’s perceptions of north and south and it even applies to the north and south of countries and even cities. People in the north of anywhere are viewed as more strict, industrious, intellectual, individualistic, and serious while those in the south of anywhere are viewed as more friendly, relaxed, “lazy,” polite, and community-oriented.
Kind of a stretch to assume that just cus Miles is of Ishvalan descent makes him Scar's brother, who is dead. And who also looks nothing like Miles
Especially when Miles mentioned that he's only 1/4 Ishvalan. Seriously, what exactly are the odds that the two of them share any common blood?
I did not remembered that pride was the last homunculi formally introduced.
General not commander, commander is an enlisted rant, she is one of the heads of the military rank wise.

It's not weird, it's only fair, she's the queen of Briggs, in Briggs they follow her orders without protest, and Ed arrives from one day to the next asking for help without giving anything in return, I don't know, call it equivalent exchange. 🤷🏻♀
Briggs is not a democracy, it is a monarchy where The Queen rules, and she does so because she has earned the loyalty of her people.
Olivier Armstrong And Their Teacher Are The Only Ones That Scare Me The Most In This Anime

At 14:05: Eyepatches in anime? NOT IN ONE PIECE! Yep, an anime about pirates running weekly for almost 24 years (in October it will be) is yet to feature a SINGLE character wearing an eye patch. Insanely funny if you ask me!
I want to highly, HIGHLY, recommend Soul Eater as your next show to watch. It is such a fantastic show with great characters and insane animation. I would also suggest watching it in English as well.

Man you gotta watch the 2003 version of this Anime. I just rewatched your reaction of of the 2003 openings and man it would be spectacular to see you watch it knowing what you know about Brotherhood and your theories. Plus you would be like the only channel on this dang platform to have watched it since many of the other channels that did watch it stopped posting their reactions of it a few episodes in. (Not because it was bad but because of personal reasons they don't show, plus they are a few years old so ya know, the platform was weird.)
Forget about scar's brother he is 100% dead, he probably died from blood lost for give his arm to scar
