This is the point where Brotherhood diverts in its own direction from 2003 to follow the original manga, from here out Brotherhood really comes into its own.
You... You do know this story was written and drawn by a Japanese person, right? Besides, since Amestris is primarily based on Western Europe, she clearly needed an easy way to show that Ling, May, etc. are of a different race of people from another country through their character designs.
I wonder what everyone's titles and Ultimates are. Greed the Avaricious - Ultimate Shield Wrath the Furious - Ultimate Eye Envy the Jealous - Ultimate ? Lust the Lascivious? - Ultimate Spear Sloth the Indolent - Ultimate ? Gluttony the Voracious? - Ultimate ? Pride the ? - Ultimate ?
Kinda a waste if you ask me, a rogue homunculus…only to show that homunculus, though heal really fast, can still be killed. RIP Greed, I wish you weren’t just a plot device. 😢
This arc of the show is my favorite. Because you're at the point now where things just keep getting better and better. Like if you thought ep 14 was awesome, you aint seen nothing yet...
I personally don't see any racism in the existence of Xiangese and Ishvalans. Now obviously there are depictions of racisms against them here, the Ishvalan genocide is a huge plot point. But I just see different cultures inspired by existing ones, and don't see any real stereotypes. But, perhaps I am blind to them.
This is a great series! Brotherhood follows the manga the 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist follows it’s own story after the introduction of Greed. I’m looking forward to your reactions to future plot points. Xing is based on Asian culture. Also remember this takes place 1910’s so this takes place in a past based on a caricature of different cultures. Where the story takes place has a German type culture.
Ooh, you've been introduced to most of the sins now. You know Lust and Gluttony, Envy, Greed and Wrath. You saw a glimpse of Sloth. What do you think of them all? :)
Everyone is a caricature, scar and the Ishvalans are, Winry with her German blue eyes and blonde hair, etc. I think stereotypes and archetypes are important storytelling tools. The eastern characters aren’t just one dimensional, as you will see! Plus this was made by a Japanese woman … I’m not sure how much validity that gives her writing on a fictional Asian country? Idk
i think they can be for sure!! based on the comments i've gotten so far, i am very optimistic that the xingese characters will be developed & handled quite well 🥰
To be fair (to her), there are a lot of Japanese stereotypes throughout the series too, but they don't stand out as much due to them being used so frequently. On the other hand, this being Fantaxxia's first anime, she wouldn't be used to them. Hmm. 🤔 Let's just say that the caricatures are there for a good reason, if only just to help emphasize the differences between the various races/cultures.
Caricatures, stereotypes, and archetypes are different things. Blue eyes and blonde hair isn’t a caricature. Nothing about the “Asian” characters are caricatures, either. She couldn’t even give an example of the “slight racism” that an Asian author gave fictional Asian characters.
@@SnailHatanThe only thing I can think of is Ling and his "closed eyes" look, since that can be used, in a racist manner. But like, in this case it's canonical that Ling is literally closing his eyes here(as opposed to a 'so narrow looking they look closed' look) and none of the other Xing characters look like that, cause again this is a Ling thing. And like, there's many an anime character, written and created by Japanese creators, that have characters with that kind of design (Gin from Bleach comes to mind) so like, I feel like they get a pass on depicting themselves that way. In a cartoon made by a white person I might side eye it, but in an anime, made by a Japanese person? That's different.
Something they show in episode 14 that most people kinda gloss over the first time is that the sins are physical incarnations of fathers sins, so his anger is in bradly, his jealousy in envy, etc etc, so yeah he reclaimed greed back into his body
I know you ask in a previous video for a good spot to start watching the 2013 version, and i think this is a good moment. The stories start to deviated from here and onward, i just warn you, some of the more iconic scenes are lot more "inpactful" in that version, and the ending, well thats an experience.😁
The show was sort of released in parts of 13 episodes each. This is now part 2, and we're past the point where the original show went off it's own direction. Regarding Xing: Yes, it's essentially this China of this world, but I don't think it's handled poorly. I mean, this show is Japanese in origin, so it's hard to say that it's version of Asian culture is insensitive or anything. Ling as a character is just sort of his own thing. I guarantee you'll like him more and more as the series goes on...
Oh I’m not saying it’s being handled poorly! I don’t think I’ve seen it handled at all yet! Just kinda setting the precedent that I noticed it and I hope it isn’t actual racism. Based on how they’ve dealt with other marginalized communities, I doubt this show is actually racist
It's set in an alternate Western Europe. Wouldn't make much sense to portray East Asian people to look the same as their Caucasian brothers and sisters in the west. You even have the round eye stereotype for Caucasians and I don't feel offended by it. Plus it was written by a Japanese woman. I am pretty sure they can portray themselves as they see fit.
Yeah, there are cultural stereotypes. Wait till you see how Americans are often portrayed in anime. 😆 (Not in this one, though, since it's in a universe where America can't possibly exist the way we know it.) Although personally, I find it much more hilarious than offensive.
Yeah, but for an japanese anime i'd say it was an pretty good portrayal. Especially considering Ling and his companions are badass And considering that this anime mostly passes in something akin to the real world during the 19th century i'd say is pretty spot on. China had yet to "westernize" itself and the institutions remained mostly unchanged for centuries
I was hesitant to comment on it until I saw a bit more character development because I wasn’t sure if it was meant to serve some kind of purpose? Like this show deals with dark aspects of life quite well i think so it really stood out to me. I’m curious to see what comes of it!
Bradley is a straight up menace.
FRIGGIN A-MEN TO THAT

Also for reference: May Chang is 11 now, Ed is 15, Al is 14 and Ling Yao is 16

Wrath the Furious - Ultimate Eye
Envy the Jealous - Ultimate ?
Lust the Lascivious? - Ultimate Spear
Sloth the Indolent - Ultimate ?
Gluttony the Voracious? - Ultimate ?
Pride the ? - Ultimate ?
I think envy has the ultimate disguise.
Its unfortunate Greed gets taken out early. He's such a fun character. I wish there was more of him.

Are you sure you don't want to binge it all in one sitting? There are so many episodes I can't wait to see you react to! 😅
