The author actually interviewed army veterans, most of whom were snipers, in preparation for this episode (chapter) which I think is pretty awesome
I think the most notable one was the one guy who just went silent and said that he didn't watch war stories.
it was multiple veterans, but you're right, it was *mostly* snipers.
its this kind of dedication that can turn even subpar stories into good and great ones.

It's a shame that most his scenes from the the manga were cut for time. But the Iron Blood Alchemist was actually a pretty reasonable guy. He was actually disagreed with the order to go in and exterminate the Ishvalan's and when the Ishvalans surrendered, he killed his commanding officer (who planned on ignoring the surrender and killing them all), so he could take command and accept their surrender. Dude legit did his best to minimize death and destruction.

It was more likely a reference to executive order 9066 which led to the internment of Japanese-Americans during world war 2 which was also the inspiration for order 66 from Star Wars, but I can't blame you for making that assumption.

Kimblee is a very interesting case. He is psychopath, no doub, but he is very aware of that. He also is a very intelligent man, and has a very peculiar sense of honor. I won't spoil anything...but damn, he is an incredible character

I love the irony that your observation that Mustang seems selfish is at the start of the same episode that reveals he wants to be a dictator so he can give power back to the parliament, which would eventually result in him getting put on trial for his war crimes.
Mustang didn't really have a goal of being in charged until after the Ishvalan war. His experiences there are what convinced him the country needed to change and that if no one else was going to do it, then he would have to work his way up and change things himself.
Fun fact Luke, every state alchemist that you saw in this episode were introduced early on
11:44 Basque Grand - Iron Blood alchemist. Appeared in episode 4. He was killed at first introduction of Scar. You were right saying that he is that dude that created wall with cannons in alley against Scar. Even though anime portrayed him as no brain muscle soldier stating his name amidst the battle, there is a reason behind that. If you know the context behind it from the manga, you can actually respect him. Respect as a high ranking soldier that cares for his soldiers of course.
13:46 Isaac McDougal - Freezing Alchemist. Appeared in episode 1. He is the one who understood the real plans of the Government and tried to destroy the central command. Unfortunately our main heroes stopped him without knowing his true intentions. Look at his face here. He was the same as Mustang. He thought he was serving his country, but in reality...
13:48 Giolio Comanche - Silver Alchemist. Appeared in episode 15. He is that spinning one legged old dude who was killed by Scar in the river. No good traits of him were shown in the show.
18:02 Solf J. Kimblee - Crimson Alchemist. Appeared in episode 1. Isaac McDougal tried to take him from prison so Kimblee could help him destroy the Central. Isaac thought Kimblee is against the government since Kimblee killed all his superiors during the war, but he was wrong. Kimblee is the sociopath that likes killing and chaos. Nothing more, nothing less. But yet, he is one of those characters that despite all heinous act they do you actually listen them and even respect their ideas. Kimblee is a moron, but he is not hypocrite. You will soon learn what I meant by that. Kimblee is the definition of the statement: "Between being a monster who fully understands the harm they're causing and reveling in it, and being a soldier who has been suckered into doing so through propaganda and orders, it's the monster that's more respectable because they genuinely understand and believe in what they're fighting for"
Something left out from the manga is that when the Ishvalin religious leader tries to negotiate, it’s actually the Iron Blood alchemist that facilitated it. Their commanding officer refused and commanded that the Ishvalins should be killed, and Iron Blood instead killed him and allowed the Ishvalins to meet Bradley, with the other soldiers that saw commenting that it was tragic that the commanding officer was killed by a stray bullet.
It’s sad that the one Alchemist that did try to allow a peaceful solution was the first one killed by Scar.
Can I just say how much I love Alphonse putting on that gallant princely cadance with Mai! He might as well have said "Oh, well thank you, m'lady". It's so damn cute😂

The creator of fma Arakawa, interviewed ww2 japanese veterans for research of ishvalan war.
The one interview that stood out to her was one vet that look her in the eyes and said.
"I dont watch war movies"

The FMA manga predates Episode III by several years, but as others have noted, both are in fact referencing EO 9066, Roosevelt's order for the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII.
Interesting. I always thought it referenced 666, the mark of the beast aka the anti-christ from the bible, who brings about the end of the world.
It fits with the other religious symbols like the 7 deadly sins.
The relationship between Mustang and Hawkeye is as romantic as it can be given that he's her superior. Hawkeye is Mustang's most trusted ally. He cares deeply about her and the feeling is mutual. I remember watching the first FMA movie with my mom one time and she asked me if Hawkeye and Mustang were a couple. I told her yes.

@@keyblademasterclark Expanding a bit about RoyxRiza, they are a couple in every way. Their relationship is complex and has been built over the years, since they were very young. They also hurt each other unintentionally. They both ended up in hell and they both got out of there together. Until creating a blind and unbreakable trust. And of course there's also something romantic there, although personally I don't think they've taken a second step, the two of them are head over heels in love. But the goal they have in common is more important than their own feelings.
They represent what a true couple is, love, delivery, trust, union. Both help each other to achieve their goal and to grow together, becoming better every day.

One character that I feel people tend to ignore when discussing those involved in the Ishvalan War is Armstrong, and it's such a crime to his character. It's mentioned that he deserted/abandoned the fighting in the middle of the war, and his sister even calls him a coward for it. His face when making that wall is just...
While other alchemists and soldiers that we know are good people seem to have grown numb or can at least hide their feelings while on duty, like Mustang or Hawkeye, he is completely horrified by his own actions. It's such a contrast to his usual goofy attitude. He was just too pure-hearted to be a part of that and couldn't take it anymore.
His current careless fist-to-fist fighting style is also definitely a coping mechanism or a way to compensate for all the horrific shit he was a part of. In Ishval he hid behind walls and ran away, so now he fights shirtless and with his hands, with no protection whatsoever, never backing down.
Marcoh was being held by the homunculi because he's one of their 'sacrifices,' and he was (demonstrably) suicidal. So they weren't willing to let him run around (like Ed and Al), but were instead keeping him under control. Til Scar...

a multitude of veterans (mostly snipers) were interviewed so that the Mangaka (the creator) could realistically portray the horrors of war in all its brutality.
that whole "someone's sure to die when WE [snipers] pull the trigger" is basically a quote and its that kind of dedication that makes this anime great, its not perfect, but there's a reason why almost everyone who's seen it placed it somewhere in their top ten.
They cut a lot of scenes from this episode. There were scenes of others characters not shown (like the other State Alchemists and even Winry's parents) and extended time with Hughes. The scene where Logue Lowe surrendered involved Hughes and Basque Grand shooting their superior officer to allow this to happen as that guy ordered them to be killed on the spot, you can see Hughes standing next to the Ishvalans when they speak with Bradley. Another small scene with Armstrong was cut where after the shooting at the wall he put up where he found two survivors hiding. In an act of extreme guilt, he opened a hole in the wall for them to escape only to be caught by Kimblee who executed them right in front of him, promising not to rat him out for his insubordination.
Fun fact: The officer Grand shot (Brigadier General Fessler) was the same officer who dismissed Armstrong from the battlefield after his breakdown.
Such a shame. It was the episode I was looking forwards to the most.
There are other scenes that weren't included in the anime either, which in my opinion are quite important, I really feel the Ishval War of Extermination should've been 2 episodes. Some of these scenes are:
Around the time EO366 was passed, the army purged all of the soldiers of Ishvalan descent and jailed them, these soldiers were later used to make the first philosopher's stones by Dr Marcoh's team.
The whole plot of the doctor's Rockbell was excluded, they operated in some of the most dangerous areas of the conflict, treating Amestrians and Ishvalans alike. They refused to leave their post because of their moral position that as doctors they should remain where they are able to make the biggest difference, and also because due to the rules of engagement that Amestris follows, which prevents them from targeting medical/humanitarian targets - by remaining there they were preventing that sector from being exterminated with artillery/alchemy. This made them admired amongst doctors all over Amestris, but it put them at odds with the military and government of Amestris. The military therefore tasked Kimbley to find the doctors and assassinate them in such a way that Ishvalans would be blamed. When Kimbley finally reached the doctors he found that they were already dead, having recently fallen at Scar's hand. This is important because it shows that even if Scar hadn't killed them, Amestris would have, and it is referenced later in the story when Kimbley speaks about the Rockbells.
Another bit that was excluded was a conversation between Dr Marcoh and Dr Knox, who speak about the horrific things they are being ordered to do, and lament how Doctors who are supposed to heal are instead being used to experiment on, torture, and murder people. This scene shows why Dr Marcoh and Dr Knox behave the way they do in the present, and is heart-breaking.
We are shown also the last Ishvalan to fall victim to the Genocide, it is a defenseless old man lying on the rubble with his injured dog in his lap, and Mustang is his executioner. Mustang tells him he is the "last" Ishvalan left alive and asks him if he has any last words, to which he replies "I will never forgive you", and is then killed by mustang.
There are also scenes showing Aerugo's (the country to the south of Amestris) involvement in the conflict, the brutality of the fighting on the ground through Hughes' eyes, children being specifically targeted, and additional scenes of how soldiers reacted to the end of the extermination.
It is also much more graphic in detail, we see piles of corpses, dead civilians of all ages, the burnt victims of Mustang's alchemy, dying soldiers, civilians, children...
PLEASE read volume 15 of the Manga if you are interested in FMA, as good as the anime is it really doesn't do this part justice.
@@dustygrrrl Agreed! Definitely worth the read! One of the things I think is lost in the shortening of this part in the anime, is how Mustang and the others could participate in genocide. In the manga, you get more of the dichotomy that yes, it is a genocide, but also how many Amestrian soldiers have died and are still dying in the conflict. It makes the actions of genocide muddier for those who are actually on the ground, constantly seeing comrades be killed. The soldiers under Mustang, for example, thank him for being there. Because of him, they get to go home alive. One of the people Riza snipes is someone who was about to kill Mustang who was on break with Hughes. Hughes fights because he simply wants to live. The way the narrative shows the conflict from inside the fighting makes it feel less one-sided. The soldiers believe they could die any day, so they follow orders and shoot. But then you step back and are able to see just how far outpaced the Ishvalens are in terms of military power, especially with the State Alchemists, and it's still clear that the Ishvalens are the victims here.
I'm also sad they skipped the Aerugo stuff because it's telling on how hostile other countries are with Amestris (and because I love worldbuilding). They helped supply the Ishvalens with ammunition which is what aided in dragging the civil war on for 7 years, but after the extermination campaign began, they refused to allow any Ishvalens to flee into their country as refugees showing that they only used the Ishvalens to create instability in Amestris.
The one guy that screamed "they took my leg" also was one of the Alchemists Scar killed in an earlyer episode.
Fullmetal Alchemist: where save for granny, Izumi, her husband, and maybe Hughes' wife, all your favorite adult characters are war criminals
12:18 remember that Flashback when Scar first gathers with his family a bunch of episodes back and there was a random wall off to the side, now you know why that wall is important. It shows that Armstrong does what he has to as a soldier even if it tears him apart as a person, Armstong is top tier tragic.

The EO in the manga is just EO 306, but the change in the anime feels like a reference to EO 9066 -- the executive order by US President FDR to round up Americans of Japanese ancestry to be put into concentration camps during WW2. While the story draws heavily on German imagery -- and certainly has applicability to the Nazis -- Arakawa drew heavily on Japanese history. She not only is drawing on Japan's imperial actions during the second world war, but also its internal colonial history. She grew up in a part of Japan that had been conquered, centuries before, by the main ethnic group we think of as Japanese (there are several different ethnic groups within the Japanese isles, possibly the most well known being Okinawans and the Ainu). Part of why she wrote this story was about grappling with what it means to grow up with that history of bloodshed behind the current society and how to address that past as a current member of said society. For the Ishvalan War of extermination, she even interviewed veterans about their experience -- both what was done to them and what they did to citizens of other countries.
Kimblee is only 'right' depending on how you wish to interpret his actions. Your interpretation isn't that different from Hawkeye's, recognizing the humanity of the victims. Kimblee... is making a mental trophy collage, reveling in his murder and the danger of being killed in the process... He's a very interestingly messed up character.
perhaps you didn't notice, despite it was shown many times, but her father's research was in her back. So, when she asks Mustang if she could trust him with that research... well...
And another thing, her back is partially burnt 😲

There was a conversation between Fu and Ed in the desert regarding alchemy and alchahestry. They both discussed legends regarding the origins of both arts. For Amestris it was a great wise man who came from the East and taught people alchemy. For Xing, it was a sage from the West who taught them alchahestry. They had their talk within the ruins of the city of Xerces which was said to have been destroyed in a single night.
The homunculi are all made with philosopher stones as their core, however, they do not seem to make any of the stones in circulation themselves. Dr Marcoh as far as we can tell is the only person who has made a stone using other people, so in that itself he has immense value to anyone who know's what he's capable of. The homunculi have also not at all minced words when it comes to sacrifices. They KNOW Ed and Al are both candidates, but in regards to the likes of Mustang and Marcoh they have only called them "potential" candidates. Izumi too has given them cause to suspect. It's likely they've confirmed her as one already by digging up information on her.
Kimblee is an odd situation. Yes there is a reason he is in prison, but he's also not exactly the sort to really mind that he's in there. Remember he had every opportunity to get out when the Freezing Alchemist came to try and enlist his help. He is a man of singular purpose who does not bother to expend any effort on things that do not interest him. It's likely he's content to simply sit and bide his time until he's able to do what he enjoys, or finds something interesting enough to inspire him to act. Life as a prisoner likely keeps him safe, and within arms reach as well.
The Ishval war is the driving force that keeps mustang aiming for a higher post

In 2003, Mustang explains his motivation as wanting to be in charge so that he never has to carry out orders he didn't believe in again. And when he's the one giving the orders, he'll never make anyone do what the military made him do in Ishval. It applies here as well. He's going straight to the top so he can make his country a place he's proud to serve.
I always liked Hawkeye, but this is the episode that pushed her to be among the top of my favorites in this anime. And kinda anime in general. It'a so rare to find female characters like Hawkeye in anime.

Mustang cannot change the politics of the country by turning himself away from Ishval war. It pairs with how they didn't have any options at that time, as a soldier, you obey or you are out (you'll see this aspect in the dynamic between Armstrong and the *new character*). The war set Mustang's vision to aim for the top of the government and be up in the game, instead of the idealistic, humbling inspiration he had before. I think what makes Mustang questionalble is because he somewhat functions as a politician which makes sense for a military state.
Kimblee is an excellent character. Yeah, he's evil to the core but his philosophy makes a twisted sort of sense. It makes him way more complex than the normal strong crazy character that just likes killing.

You will know soon enough, brother. Bradley is the top-notch of them all.
I think it's important to draw a distinction between responsibility and blame. Scar is responsible for the death of Winry's parents. That's a fact and nothing will change that. But whether we blame him for it is another matter entirely. He was not in control of his actions at the time, and the one responsible for that state of mind was Kimblee. So personally I would say that Scar isn't to blame for what happened.
We can apply this same kind of test to the war in Ishval. Were the soldiers responsible for the genocide? Factually, they are. Are they to blame? And here, it's like Kimblee said: they chose to be there. They chose to fight. They were in control of their own actions. Hughes may have fought because he didn't want to die, but is not wanting to die a good reason to cause the deaths of others? So yes, I'd say Roy, Hawkeye, and Hughes all carry blame for the genocide. Their motivations may be understandable, and it may even be what we would have chosen to do if we were put in that situation... but that can't take away from the fact that they carried out their orders of their own will.
Kimberlee is one of my favorite villain in this anime. His psycho but its more complicated than that

Kimblee might be a complete monster, but he's also a really interesting character that does make plenty of good points.
0:46 -- This is the major problem with these subtitles: they often reveal you the name of a character before it's actually meant to be revealed to the viewer. Sometimes perhaps even _too_ much before.
And in some cases it's not even _necessary_. In this case, instead of "[MASTER HAWKEYE]" they could have written only "[MASTER]".
9:55 -- The author of the original manga, Hiromu Arakawa, is actually a Star Wars fan. There is even a short manga (perhaps one-panel) where she complains about a particular element of the storyline of the prequel trilogy.
The chapter that the manga came out for this was March 11, 2006 in Japan and Star Wars Episode III was in May 2005, so that Order 66 reference might just be a Star Wars Reference.
Kimblee is my go to for hyper sanity. He hates contradictions and deeply admires those who are true and follows their beliefs. He saw Hawkeye was on that fence and corrected her shaking identity so she wouldn't become some else who doesn't firm their ideals.

There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith is older.
Revenge of the Sith came out in May 2005. This Anime Episode in November 2009. (And just for completion: In the whole original show there was no such order mentioned in the entire show. And in the FMA manga this order existed but was called 'Presidential decre #306' and the Manga chapter it appeared in was published in March 2006 therefore also after Revenge of the Sith was allready out.) Therfore it is impossible that Star Wars's Order 66 was a reference to FMA, but not the other way round.
But as someone else in the comments allready said it's more likely that both independendly from each other were inspired by the same historical ececutive order #9066 from real world's WWII.
Or both were inspired by 666, the mark of the beast aka the anti-christ, who ends the world. It fits with the other religious symbols like the 7 deadly sins.

Time for _some_ things cut from the episode for the purposes of time! This episode condenses the entirety of book 15 into one episode - one out of 27 volumes, into one out of 64 episodes. You may notice a ratio difference. The condensing is a bit sad, volume 15 is my favorite book of the series.
In the manga, this is where we actually got to see Scar kill Winry's parents, as well as a good bit of the work they were doing there.
The Ishvalans were shown to be much more formidable as opponents. Regular Amestrisian soldiers were saying things like "it's like one of their warrior monks equals ten of us". The anime really only shows the genocide part, but it really was a full on civil war, with a _lot_ of people dying on both sides.
Once Executive Order 3066 was given, Ishavalan soldiers in the military were imprisoned and stripped of their rank, and IIRC eventually were the first Ishvalans used to make a Stone.
The southern neighbour Aerugo was shown to have aided the Ishavalans in their rebellion in hopes of destabilizing Amestris, but once it was clear how the civil war would end and Ishvalan refugees started heading to Aerugo for safety, they were not accepted.
After the Philosopher's Stone creation scene, Dr. Marcoh and Dr. Knox met in the field and had a chat. Knox mentioned he had resigned from his post as a military doctor (a position in which he had had to participate in human experiments), and was agonizing about why he, a doctor, had to take part in killing people.
Mustang's soldiers took a moment to thank him at the end of the war. They told him, "thanks to you, this many of us were able to survive." Yet all Mustang could think was "I'm so weak _only_ this many survived..."
Armstrong found some Ishvalans who had avoided the "driven up against his stone wall and shot" death that you saw others fall to. Kind and conflicted man that he is, he opened a hole in the wall for them to get away and told them to run. They fled, but as they turned to thank him, Kimblee showed up and blew them up, cheerily telling a distraught Armstrong "good thing I was here to clean up, you could have been court-martialed if someone else saw that little _accident_ you had!" Not long after, Armstrong was sent home for not following orders, as he wouldn't fight anymore.
The Iron Blood Alchemist, Basque Grant, was actually kind of a reasonable guy. When the Ishvalan head priest came to surrender, his unit was there. Their commanding officer told them "no surrenders, kill them all". Grant shot that officer (which everyone present - which includes Hughes - agreed to have been "a stray enemy bullet") and accepted the priest's surrender, and brought him to Bradley hoping it could end the war faster and with less bloodshed. Didn't work, but he tried.
Some military higher-ups told Kimblee "hey there's this doctor couple out there in the field, we can't really attack through there" - they basically sent him to covertly kill the Rockbells to get them out of the way, but Scar... got there first, and Kimblee's unit was the one to find their bodies. Kimblee indicates he respected them, for sticking to what they were doing - he was still absolutely going to kill them, but valued them nonetheless.
(And yeah Kimblee is a nice example of "the worst person you know makes a good point". He's an absolute monster, but he says some good things sometimes.)
Why Kimblee was imprisoned was also shown here, but I think the anime gets to that later.
Really interesting character, he has a unique code he follows (hating hypocrisy and valuing people who are true to their convictions seems to be a thing for him - he'll look down on a soldier who won't kill, but respects a doctor who wants to save lives).
And there's more still! But that's all I can do from memory. The manga's also a lot more brutal about a lot of the visuals...
I highly recommend looking up and reading volume 15 even if you don't care to read any of the rest of it. Chapters 58 to 61, if you want to find them online - and I think it also stretches a bit into 62.

Respect to the animation direction. Tasked with depicting genocide, the extermination of human beings… they have the responsibility to make sure it’s dark enough that every viewer understands what is is being described is evil.

The characters of this show are complex which makes them interesting. They can be on the side of good but there are things they do or say you won't agree with while there are bad guys who have things they say or do that you find you agree with. I think it's part of why this show is beloved - cause the characters are interesting.
I'm excited to know how you'd feel about all of the characters once you see the ending. I mean right now you have complictaed feelings about them so it'd be fun to see your thoughts on them in the end.
It is true that Brotheehood is an excellent adaptation, it takes the most important elements and places them in such a way that the story does not lose meaning or value but... I can't stop thinking about how extraordinary this is in the manga, so much so that It's not just a chapter, but a whole volume, 15. My favorite because it condenses too many extremely interesting and deep themes, ideas, thoughts and issues.
It clearly shows what war is, and all the elements that make it up, plus all the characters are magnificent, we know Roy, Hughes and Hawkeye in depth, but also Kimblee, Basqued Grand, Bradley... There are so many details that were left out that make this moment in history complex and wonderful.
For example Hughes's motivations to support Roy. Hughes participated firsthand in the match between the leader of Ishbal and Bradley, along with Basqued Grand (I'm sorry that bth didn't give him the role he deserves), and when the match took place Bradley gave his speech of " the absence of God", completely ignoring the peace proposal. It is when Hughes realizes that the military is really rotten and there is no good reason to support it. Therefore he decides to give his vote to Roy, to change the atrocity that he himself had witnessed.
And like that there are many more details, like Kimblee was sent to assassinate the Rockbells but when he arrived, Scar had already done it. And he's in jail because he murdered a group of soldiers so as not to give them the Philosopher's Stone.
And of course, Roy and Riza's relationship is deeper than what they had shown, don't tell me you didn't realize that the "investigation" is the tattoo that Hawkeye has on his back? And that one: "shoot me if I ever get out of the way", more than a premonition it is a total declaration of confidence, Riza is the person Roy trusts the most (although it is a premonition) 😅
I think it is really important that members of our heros, of the people we root for, are shown to have commited horrible acts in war.
War is a... strange force. First of all, the structure of Soldiers forbears thinking for yourself and instead fosters following blind orders, which leads to the infamous excuse:"I didn't want to do it, I was just following Orders"
Second, you are constanntly aware that the other side wants to kill you too, so you go into a "Me or them" mode and humans are build for survival first, so it becomes easier to kill the enemy in the name of ones own Survival, or sometimes as a rational "For the survival of my friends" "If I don't kill the enemy here, they could get to my own loved ones and kill them, so i have to strike first"
ANd lastly, It has been shown by WWI and II reports that, the longer a soldier is on the bttlefield and sees bloodshed, the more desensitised they become. The enemy isn't human anymore at some point, it is an 'other' a thing to be mowed down. That is why things like the Christmas Miracle in WWII where not only annomalys, but could _only_ happen in the first year of War. There are multiple accounts of how difficult it was for the Soldiers to go back to fighting afterwards, because suddenly, the enmy wasn't a faceless monster anymore, they were people, human beings that you had played football and shared a meal with the day before, People that told you about their own Mothers, Fathers, Wives and Children that waited for _them_ at home.

I must preface this by saying: this is a general message to everybody, it is not aimed at G.O.T. Games.
It turns out that there may be some good in people who take part in unjust wars, even in people who do terrible things, and they might redeem themselves. I think that this is a lesson lost on many from modern, Western cultures. Westerners today are so judgmental and divisive. We forget that everybody has done wrong, and we are quick with our holier-than-though, cancel-culture judgments. We tend to make everything black and white today.
Even though Father seems invincible, his power is based only on the science of this world, and everything that is scientific can be understood, explained, and everything that can be explained can be overcome.
So, Yes Bast Grand is the cannon guy Scar killed. In '03 he was a dick, however in the Manga, he kills his superior officer, because when the high priest surrender to talk to Bradley, the general wanted to kill him immediately, so Bast Grand shot him and all the men said it was an accident.
Get used to those after credit scenes. They're pretty frequent from here on out. The thing to remember is: the credits and preview take two minutes. If there is more than two minutes of time left when the credits roll, there's an after-credit scene.
27:17 -- Yes, "Mr. Armor" or, in the original Japanese version, "Yoroi-san". AFAIK, such metonymical way of referring to a person is actually pretty common in Japanese culture.
For instance, "nikuya" (literally: "meat house") originally means "butcher shop", but it's also used in the meaning "butcher".
Mustang is certainly selfish. That doesn't make him a bad person.
I have a big frustration on the episode of the Ishbal war. I understand there are choices and sacrifices to be made when adapting, but this scene is sorely lacking in the anime.
The mustachioed alchemist, Colonel Gran is the one who was sent to replace Armstrong when he broke down (previous episode). He never, in the manga, stupidly shouted his name for his ego, but did it so that the downed soldiers regain their morale after their officer's incompetence and fought in the front line in front of them instead of remaining hidden in the rear like their officer. This one sent them to the massacre because he was an impatient and irresponsible little asshole.
For those who like to read this kind of block, here is the extract:
"Armstrong: ANSWER ME! Why do we have to continue this atrocious war?!

Kimbly is a monster, that being said he is so well written that as a character I still really like him. You asked so the reason kimbly is in prison right now is because he killed all of the military officers who knew he was in possession of the stone and was court marshaled.
God damn Bradley's speech to Logue in this episode is some of the best VA I've ever heard. Gets me every time.
He's also speaking from the experience that he has witnessed. In this world, God is not going to punish evil people simply because they are evil. Because if that was the case, where exactly was God when he and all those other little boys were being brainwashed by the State and turned into human weapons? Were they not worthy of God's justice? The only thing that Bradley knows for certain is that if one wants to survive, then they have to struggle in order to do so. He knows this because that's how he stayed alive. From his perspective, actions and willpower keep you alive, not faith.
The foreshadowing and attention to detail in this show is absolutely insane. On rewatch, you will constantly be kicking yourself and wondering how you were sooooooooooo blind. I know I've rewatched it many times and am still finding new things.

So about the Extermination Executive Order thing:
1) Yes, Revenge of the Sith got released on May 20th 2005.
2) The Manga volume where this episode happens is the 15th, which got released in Japan on December 22nd 2006.
In conclusion: yes, it may be that Hiromu Arakawa wanted to reference the prequel trilogy, but it may also be quite possible to be a coincidence where she had already planned what to call it like and just happen to be almost identical, or could be just a thing she never found out.
After all it's not to be given for sure she had already known about Star Wars Episode III, even given the year and half of time of discrepancy between the two Orders.

I've seen & read FMA/FMA:B a few times.....but this time it kind of clicked. I'm fairly sure that Executive Order 3066 is actually referencing Executive Order 9066. It's the executive order put into place by FDR that forced all Americans of Japanese descent into "Internment" camps at the start of the US's entry in the second world war.

There's a quote from another anime. "When war breaks out, both sides are evil."(if you know you know.) It doesn't really apply here since the Ishvalans were innocent. But what the quote means is that even the nicest people can do monstrous things to each other in war.

This anime came out after Star Wars, but it's based on the Manga, which predates the first anime. This one follows the manga closer than the first anime.
Ok I'll throw some lore at you, Order 66 is most likely a reference to Teddy Roosevelt's Executive order 9066. While the wording differs, all 3 orders basically name innocent peoples traitors and allowing for horrific things to be done to them. Cause they are now "Traitors".
So probably not a starwars reference, considering the authors skill in researching.
Kimblees Philosophy has people split for _Ages._ Because he is defintly a Psychopath and he enjoys killing and yet, he sees the world in a very clear, unidealistic way that you have a hard time arguing with.
In my personal opinion Kimblee is right about the state of the presence, but where he looses me is that he does not think it can be altered. He has neither hope nor ambition and that is the part that I can disavow. The world can definitly be a shithole, no question about it. But the answer to that is to stzrife for a better tomorrow, not to sit back and watch the destruction from the sidelines

Mustang is a morally grey character, but I think his intentions have always been good. When he joined the army, he did it because he cared about his country and wanted to make it a better place. When he was deployed to Ishval and ordered to exterminate an entire race of people, I imagine he probably did it because he kept thinking there must be a good justification for the killing, there must be a good reason for the war. By the time he truly started to question those reasons, and realized it was all just a senseless massacre, it was already too late, he'd already taken part in it. So, he decided that the best way to make up for his actions, as much as humanly possible, was to become the fuhrer so he can truly change the country for the better.
Up to this point it makes sense to assume that Mustang's reasons are selfish, but in this episode we learn that they're entirely the opposite.
Yeah, the Ishvalan war was just... fucked up. It would be horrific either way but knowing the reason behind it only makes it worse. And seeing it told through the eyes of several different participants draws a pretty vivid picture - like, the whole thing is nightmarish but it's so well done in the story!
EDIT: Also remember how Mustang was comparing the actions of state alchemists to the terrible thing Shou Tucker did? Well now you have a better idea why.
My favorite Childhood Show
about the order 66 thing, this was actually published before star wars ep 3 fmab was published in 2001 star wars was in 2005 for ep 3 but ofcourse u never know how far in advance they thought of order 66 :P
The military and its soldiers committed genocide and innumerable war crimes, but it definitely was a war. It lasted over 7 years, consumed the entire eastern side of the country, and led to an enormous amount of deaths on both sides. I don't think Bradley would have been able to get away with the executive order if the war wasn't as costly as it was for both sides.

If you go back to episode 1, the Freezing Alchemist states Kimblee killed officers. As in military officers most likely of a higher rank than him. That is why he is in prison.
