I always get such King Solomon's Mines vibes from this song. Especially that beginning🔥If you've ever read the book, recall part in it about the Last Stand Of The Greys.
2:53 Joe, the singer, says 'La Bretagne, on veut voir les mains dans les airs !' (Brittany, we wanna see your hands in the air!) Brittany is the region where this live took place (Carhaix, Vieilles Charrues festival).
i think the vocal barrier is really weird especially with Gojira because i feel that now especially joe is very clear and he is so unique with the way that he hits the notes with his 'shout' sooo bloody well.
Though I am not a death metal fan I absolutely love this band. I discovered them on youtube 5-6 years ago and have watched their popularity increase substantially throughout the world- they deserve it!
Gojira is like an addictive drug, when U start to listen them, it's mpossible to stop. For me the best band live ever. try to react to remenbrance live or toxic garbage island live. 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🤘
"I think I'm starting to like this stuff." Man, you've been smiling and having a great time with metal for so long. I'm so happy to hear you finally say that out loud. The best way the vocals have been explained to me and how I've explained them to other folks is to think of it strictly as an instrument that makes a sound. Sometimes it acts as a harmony, sometimes as a lead, sometimes as none of the above. Listen to a song two or three times until you can follow along, not with the words, with the sounds and you'll appreciate it a lot more. Find the linear notes online or something later on. Love your videos, please keep them coming.
A lot of what metal bands lyrical themes are about the stuff no one talks about, stuff thsts taboo, environmental warnings spiritual enlightenment, alternative realities, real life experiences and a fuck ton more. People get turned off by the " screaming" and cant understand the lyrics but it's not supposed to be easily interpreted. It's something you have to feel. The vocals become an instrument of great intensity, to make you feel the emotion the seriousness of what is being said. Your soul understands subliminally and later you'll be urged to look up the lyrics so you can later recite them. That's why I love metal, its something to embrace for it's dark beauty and interp it how you feel it needs to be!
When you mentioned using the vocals as percussion the first thing that popped into my mind was devildriver who also has an amazing drummer crowns of creation, hardened, sin and sacrifice, pure sincerity all have great drum tracks
I feel like most of people listening to metal starts with having hard times appreciating the vocals. But once you starts to accept it, you'll be able to appreciate it as it is and it's the best thing in the world.
@@ambrooks5Plus, it even has certain techniques to be applied in order to do so without destroying your vocal chords. Thinking that screaming is just saying loud shit out of crazyness is nonsense
I discovered and heavily listened to these guys studying for my boards, haha. It worked. Seeing these guys live is incredible. Sounds better than the studio recording. I prefer listening to their live videos over the record. That short haired bassist is the most animated of the group. He was abnormally calm in this video
As a drummer that cut my teeth on extreme death metal back in the early 90’s… that’s exactly how I view extreme metal vocalists, as a percussive instrument. You hit it spot on with the passion. As nasty and forbidding as the music is, my eyes well up sometimes when the music and atmosphere overcome me. A misunderstood art form by a lot of people. I’m glad you’re breaking through the barriers. 🤘🤘
Someone probably mentioned it before, but commenting on Mario's stamina. Apparently his daily thing is to do an hour straight of the double bass, going from 170 to 210 BPM.
Your reactions are always genuine and insightful, good job! With the vocal delivery barrier I fully understand, I used to be pretty opposed to a lot of the growling in death metal and such and although I enjoyed the music it made it difficult for me to enjoy. I’ve since become a lot more familiar with metal in general and at this point I really enjoy a lot of growling and screaming (gojiras style of vocal delivery is one of my favorite along with acid bath). If you continue listening to the more extreme metal side of thing you’ll most likely naturally come to enjoy it.
Quite simply, he's talking about dying. Leaving the earth with no possessions like he arrived. There are lyrics on Google that explain it. Everything Gojira does is intense. I'm 62 and I love metal, especially Gojira. Mario Duplantier is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers in the world and this band is the tightest unit you'll ever see onstage. Groovy and with meaningful lyrics. My boys have seen them 5 times in Canada. They are great.
It’s crazy to think in 2012 they were first band to play at knotfest and now they are bringing in huge crowds. I’ve seen them 3 times and it feels like they get more intense each time 🤘🏻
I’m 2008 my iTunes suggest a song called “the way of all flesh” by a band I’d never heard of. I downloaded it. Loved it. Bought their whole collection. They’ve been my favorite band ever since! Mario is the best metal drummer alive.
Nice! I just found your channel and I am really enjoying the content. You probably had this planned already but I made 1 suggestion and you immediately done it. Makes me feel special :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums this song is probably the worst for you to listen to if you have that barrier. It’s off of their heaviest, most scream intense album
Highly recommend The Heaviest Matter in the Universe. It's about someone having an outer body experience (astral journal, sleep paralysis) and he's flying through space, through the dark and cold of the vast nothingness only to find that at the core of the universe there is one thing (presumable the heaviest matter of the universe): love.
the beauty is the passion in the delivery of the lyrics. the heavier the growl, the better for me. I can always look up what they are saying but the growl or scream gives me goosebumps
Man! I was here when you first posted your 30 days to better singles on Reddit years ago. Great to see that your channel has grown so much! Cheers from Canada, Andrew!
I love this reaction and the appreciation for the genre. Also, i watched a ton of your videos and this is the first time i realized you sound exactly like bluey's dad lol
Gojira is the original japanese word for 'Godzilla'. Gojira were a pure technical death metal band for the first two albums, then went a mix of tech death and progressive (prog) death and then transitioned into progressive metal with some death metal elements.
Gojira is my favorite super heavy group. Normally I’m not a fan of the growl vocals but the guitar on “Stranded” had me fascinated and then I really started to enjoy the song as well as “Silvera”. Now I totally on board with these guys. Was supposed to see them open for Deftones but Covid cancelled that show.
If you write “Gojira The Art of Dying” into any search engine, you’ll have the answer to the lyrics immediately friend :) This song explores the fact that we are killers by nature... but we have no idea how to die.
There's also another interpretation where the song is about a person learning how to let go of his materialistic possession and desires to finally move to the next life
10:09 the shot of the crowd with not many wearing black is because "Vieilles Charrue" a French festival in Britanny is a mainstream Festival and Gojira are really popular in France among the casual rock fans.
I learnt jazz since I was 8 years old and it's easy to spot the metal drummers that studied it too. The Stamina comes from technique. Gojira are one of my favourite bands and a lot of their lyrics are very conscientious Meshuggah whom I know you have also listened to have very introspective lyrics I think the vocal style allows for forms of words that actual melodic singing wouldn't allow, although having said that Gojira vocals are a semi melodic entity
I'll be seeing them at the Agora in Cleveland later this month. I think it will be interesting seeing them in a much smaller venue than something like in this video.
There are torches to be passed in every genre. Gojira holds that torch now. They're the greatest most original refreshing metal band of this generation. Hands down.
The best way to ‘get into’ Joe’s vocals is to read the lyrics and feel his emotions. Joe’s anguish and anger makes you feel empowered, ironically. Regardless, Gorjira is one of the all time greats and IMHO ranks amongst acts like Pink Floyd. The fact that their work reaches across all audiences speaks to how talented they are.
Mario’s double bass gas impressed the hell out of me since the first time I heard them. Like god damn how does he maintain that intensity and speed for so long??? 🤯🤯
Seeing you appreciate some of my favourite bands makes me remember Bill Burr reacting to walking into a Meahuggah concert and trying to explain it. That brings me great joy.
Gojira is a metal band that all metal heads respect and non metal heads can find something they like in their music from what I’ve seen. They incorporate so much into how they craft a song , it’s always a good heavy hypnotic groove in there somewhere and the vocals aren’t extremely harsh though the can be , but usually they are aggressive yet understandable it was just this mix of live show.
First song I heard from Gojira years ago and hooked ever since. Seeing them live for the first time with Mastodon in August, going to be absolutely bonkers.
2016 I saw Gojira 3 times in one week:- Download Festival UK, Metal Hammer awards London and then in their home country at Hellfest to which they absolutely smashed it!! 🤟😍👌
Mario Duplanteir is one of my favorite metal drummer. You should check out his completely insane drumming on Gojiras song Remembrance. The outro part/breakdown is completly nuts!
"The vocal is such a barrier, its hard to know what they're saying".. that's why we metalheads read the lyrics along. Hey, it's a good thing...metalhead reads ahahha
I would give Duplantier another shot with "Vacuity," "Death of Me," or "Remembrance." Another groove metal drummer to check out is Chris Adler, formerly of Lamb of God. He doesn't really blast, but he uses the double bass phrasings and snare backbeat to play with feel and polyrhythms, uses effects cymbals a lot (like riding on a splash) to switch up timbre, and incorporates a lot of linear fills. There are some old MD Festival videos of him playing Lamb of God tunes with his brother. Check out "Hourglass" or "Blood of the Scribe."
I would recommend listening to the album version of this song as some of Mario's amazing nuanced playing is buried in this live mix. He is truly one of the most creative and pocket players in all of metal. Check out some of his solo videos he's posted this year.
I only recently became a metalhead, so I get what you're saying. Honestly, you just get used to the growls, it's just something you sort of force yourself to appreciate. And then after that you can actually enjoy it
This band is pretty amazing : the lyrics aren't simple (example : I love Slayer, but could write something Kerry King-esque in 5 minutes), they are tigher live than any band I've ever seen, their talent is through the roof and they are probably the heaviest sounding band in history. Try the in-studio performance of Global Warming. Unreal.
I've been meaning to check these guys out for a while, so I'm glad you are doing some of their stuff. I agree about the screaming or growling vocals. I grew up loving the metal of the 80's and 70's, but often find this style less accessible due to the vocals. Some bands make great use of this, such as System of a Down and Jinjer, but to rely on that 100% can be distracting unless you're in the right mood. I'd definitely like to see more from these guys. Cheers!
Well, we welcome you to the family of heavy metal freaks, we are a great family. As far as the vocals go, personally I can distinguish between a good or not so good crowl, this guy is one of the best, the crowls are the cherry on a top of a nice cake, greetings from Greece,
It took me 40 years to finally warm up to growly metal vocals. The only good thing I can say about 2020 is that I've had a Metal renaissance. 4 months of quarantine forced me to give Death metal a chance to my great benefit.
Definetly check out one listen to the studio version of this song, the break down is like the most intense experience ever, I have a propensity to tear up.
Mario Duplantier is an absolute beast of a drummer. He has the technical ability of Danny Carey. But he hits hard and has groove like Vinnie Paul. I would suggest checking out his yearly drum solo videos, even if you don't do reaction videos. They are amazing
Bonnel réaction. They made more mainstream songs with cleaner vocals. Like Silvera, another world, stranded. They made trippy songs, pink floydian, like 'the shooting star', low lands. Some mellow slow rock ballads like Born in winter. They make really groovy melodic progressive tracks.

I used to HATE metal vocals, but LOVED the instrumentals. I started out listening to some more mainstream slipknot stuff, and then got into their heavier discography, and that lead me to other bands. Now, I LOVE metal vocals, and I like to think of them in the same way as like adding distortion to guitars. It adds to the overall effect of the song, and gives more depth in a percussive manner. Meshuggah does that the best in my opinion (they also have the coolest lyrics)

The coolest death metal in town, such a positive band.
That's awesome
You mean the coolest "Life Metal" band in town.
i think the vocal barrier is really weird especially with Gojira because i feel that now especially joe is very clear and he is so unique with the way that he hits the notes with his 'shout' sooo bloody well.
Though I am not a death metal fan I absolutely love this band. I discovered them on youtube 5-6 years ago and have watched their popularity increase substantially throughout the world- they deserve it!
I saw them live with Behemoth back in ‘09. Show fucking ruled there was like maybe a total of 50 people there
Gojira is like an addictive drug, when U start to listen them, it's mpossible to stop.
I have nothing to say that people haven't already pointed out but seeing how open minded you are to the genre really made me happy, cheers man!
Thanks Terin. I'll look em up!
It's real cool to see you get more and more into metal, it's definitely an abrasive and intimidating genre but it has so much to offer.
100%
I can’t get enough of it! 🤘
I feel like most of people listening to metal starts with having hard times appreciating the vocals. But once you starts to accept it, you'll be able to appreciate it as it is and it's the best thing in the world.
It always pisses me off when people say that screaming isn’t talent. Really? Then go scream for 2 hours night after night and lmk how you feel lol
Seeing Gojira live for the first time today! This was a great watch
Hope you enjoyed it!
🙏
One of the most, if not THE most emotionally evocative group(s) ever.
Aural catharsis embodied.
Someone probably mentioned it before, but commenting on Mario's stamina. Apparently his daily thing is to do an hour straight of the double bass, going from 170 to 210 BPM.
Madness!
The drummer and bass player in my eyes. They are the best in the world does 2 never miss a beat always on point
This specific video is what got me to love gojira. When the chorus comes in it blew me away, completely. Been fan since that moment :D
That's amazing!!
Yup definitely Johnny!
It's just an acquired taste. I do my best to keep my mind open :)
It's absurd how tight these guys play live
Quite simply, he's talking about dying. Leaving the earth with no possessions like he arrived. There are lyrics on Google that explain it. Everything Gojira does is intense. I'm 62 and I love metal, especially Gojira. Mario Duplantier is, in my opinion, one of the best drummers in the world and this band is the tightest unit you'll ever see onstage. Groovy and with meaningful lyrics. My boys have seen them 5 times in Canada. They are great.
🙌
Hey man thanks for checking this one out! One of my favorites by Gojira for sure. Great video.
Thank you!
Gojira is amazing live. Mario is relentless on drums. Such power!!
Nice to see a honest guy going from “I’m skeptical” to “ WOW”...
Nice! I just found your channel and I am really enjoying the content. You probably had this planned already but I made 1 suggestion and you immediately done it. Makes me feel special :)
That's great Mark! Thanks for watching!!!
I had this barrier for a long time as well. Just recently got over it.
Yup. I'm getting there!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums this song is probably the worst for you to listen to if you have that barrier. It’s off of their heaviest, most scream intense album
Highly recommend The Heaviest Matter in the Universe. It's about someone having an outer body experience (astral journal, sleep paralysis) and he's flying through space, through the dark and cold of the vast nothingness only to find that at the core of the universe there is one thing (presumable the heaviest matter of the universe): love.
n4rf thank you for saying it. It’s an incredible message.
Mario is such a great drummer and he hits the drums like they owe him money
the beauty is the passion in the delivery of the lyrics. the heavier the growl, the better for me. I can always look up what they are saying but the growl or scream gives me goosebumps
Saw these guys at a fairly small venue close to my hometown, mind blowing! Spot on, incredible musicians!
Man! I was here when you first posted your 30 days to better singles on Reddit years ago. Great to see that your channel has grown so much! Cheers from Canada, Andrew!
WOAH! Thanks so much!
Great info Omkar. Thank you
I was blown away the first time I saw them, too. They are incredible!
If you write “Gojira The Art of Dying” into any search engine, you’ll have the answer to the lyrics immediately friend :)
This song explores the fact that we are killers by nature... but we have no idea how to die.
That's amazing!
There's also another interpretation where the song is about a person learning how to let go of his materialistic possession and desires to finally move to the next life
@@mrakasuryakusuma551 I can go for that too :)
10:09 the shot of the crowd with not many wearing black is because "Vieilles Charrue" a French festival in Britanny is a mainstream Festival and Gojira are really popular in France among the casual rock fans.
The reason the crowd looked unmetal was that it was a French festival they were playing at which had a whole mixture of bands.
WOAH! Great info. Thanks so much!
I learnt jazz since I was 8 years old and it's easy to spot the metal drummers that studied it too. The Stamina comes from technique.
Gojira are one of my favourite bands and a lot of their lyrics are very conscientious
Meshuggah whom I know you have also listened to have very introspective lyrics
I think the vocal style allows for forms of words that actual melodic singing wouldn't allow, although having said that Gojira vocals are a semi melodic entity
The vocals vary immensely from song to song, check out Born In Winter, beautiful ambience!
I'll be seeing them at the Agora in Cleveland later this month. I think it will be interesting seeing them in a much smaller venue than something like in this video.
I love intimate venues
There are torches to be passed in every genre. Gojira holds that torch now. They're the greatest most original refreshing metal band of this generation. Hands down.
Yeah love what I’ve heard
The best way to ‘get into’ Joe’s vocals is to read the lyrics and feel his emotions.
Joe’s anguish and anger makes you feel empowered, ironically. Regardless, Gorjira is one of the all time greats and IMHO ranks amongst acts like Pink Floyd.
The fact that their work reaches across all audiences speaks to how talented they are.
it's the groove for me. the music creates a wave it's actually insane
such a dynamic, complex and powerful song. one of my all time favorites!
sure is!
Love the channel. Happy to see metal drummers get long overdue props.
Any vids of your material?
Hey Jason! Yup hundreds of vids of me on the channel man.
Maybe click the demos/covers playlist
Awesome. I will absolute search through the videos. Have a great one pal. Greetings from Canada!
:)
Gojira is by far the best live band I've ever seen, blew me away each time
Yeah this is spectacular
First song I heard from Gojira years ago and hooked ever since.
Seeing them live for the first time with Mastodon in August, going to be absolutely bonkers.
I've seen them live once and they are really good performing live. The drummer does stand out from a crowd of drummers!
2016 I saw Gojira 3 times in one week:- Download Festival UK, Metal Hammer awards London and then in their home country at Hellfest to which they absolutely smashed it!! 🤟😍👌
Nice Pookie!
HAHA! YESSSS
Yes! Right band, wrong song.
I would recommend listening to the album version of this song as some of Mario's amazing nuanced playing is buried in this live mix. He is truly one of the most creative and pocket players in all of metal. Check out some of his solo videos he's posted this year.
TOTALLY OUTSTANDING LIVE!
I only recently became a metalhead, so I get what you're saying. Honestly, you just get used to the growls, it's just something you sort of force yourself to appreciate. And then after that you can actually enjoy it
Definitely!!!
mah man be turning into a metalhead, give it a couple of years :D
🤣🤘
Cheers!
Cheers Matthew!
When it comes to the vocals, I noticed that it's becomes easier to understand the more you listen to metal. You can get used to understanding this.
Well, we welcome you to the family of heavy metal freaks, we are a great family. As far as the vocals go, personally I can distinguish between a good or not so good crowl, this guy is one of the best, the crowls are the cherry on a top of a nice cake, greetings from Greece,
Love their Music Energy and Message JUST AMAZING!\m/
Mario's a beast. He's old school and he's an absolute beast on those drums.
He is Sarah!
It took me 40 years to finally warm up to growly metal vocals. The only good thing I can say about 2020 is that I've had a Metal renaissance. 4 months of quarantine forced me to give Death metal a chance to my great benefit.
You should check out the Artisan Era label right now. Crazy technical bands. Their entire lineup.
Mario posts yearly drum solos, they’re real showcases of his talent and rather unique techniques
According to some metal drummers, this guy is the GOAT
I fucking love this song so much, specially this live perform
Yup so good!
Hello Andrew, this is Guys here. Best.Intro.Ever.
lyrics-
Breathing slowly, mechanical heartbeat
Losing contact with the living
Almighty TV plugged, hybrid empty brain
Don't see anything real in the game
The tension is building constantly
No reason just a reflex I have, driven by clockwork
I try to keep an eye open
And I realize I haven't closed my eyes in a long time
Neglected emotions leading to catastrophic voyage on the other side
I have been given so much stress and lack of confidence
I've been given the gift of so small hope deep inside
I haven't close my eyes in a long time, I am trying
I cannot stomach these forms and colors anymore
But I'm here to continue, after all I have been through
I try to keep my eyes open, I am realizing
This life and death more precious than anything
I won't bring no material in the after life
Take no possessions, I would rather travel light
I'm of this kind that kills all day
But I don't know yet how to die
Art of dying is the way to let all go
Within I practice, in the secret of my soul
My shape in the reflector has
Now for ever, a life on it's own
I used to HATE metal vocals, but LOVED the instrumentals.
You should totally react to Mario Duplantier’s drum solo
I've done 3 of them!
