He's wearing a t-shirt so he's only using like 20% of his full potential.
HAHA!
loool
I am in love with Marios facial expressions when he is playing. He is so inside the music - he IS the music.
Well said
@@AndrewRooneyDrums By the way, you should watch their (Gojiras) documentary. It's pure pleasure.
The gift of guilt is what got me into them.
I hope to check it out!
Heaviest Matter in the Universe got me.
Best Gojira song imo.
Same man, gift of guilt and flying whales were the 1st songs I heard.
same lmao
-Vacuity
-Stranded
Both great tracks from them!
Thanks!
Do more of this guy! He’s an animal. And it’s pronounced GOH GEE RUH 🤣
Yup, it's the Japanese pronunciation of Godzilla.
Technically, that should be GOH JEE RUH, since the 1st and 2nd Gs are not pronounced the same.
Pray (Live at Red Rocks), The Gift of Guilt (Live in Brixton) or The Heaviest Matter of the Universe.
All great choices! Gojira is one special band.
I recommend you check out Gojira's "Where Dragons Dwell" live from Hellfest 2016. The stamina in Mario's performance is legendary.
Mario , Drums , Coffee , and your reaction Mr. Rooney . Always a classic !! Keep those videos coming
Definitely check out Oroborus by Gojira. The double ride patterns near the end👌🏻
Sounds good Jacob!
Flying Whales, is by far my favorite song by Gojira, it is excellent!
Yeees please more Gojira, they are BY FAR the band with the best complexity/groove ratio in metal period.
As others have suggested, "Remembrance" from the Link alive is insane, especially from a drumming perspective.
I'd also recommend "Clone", "Wisdome Comes" and "The Heaviest Matter in the Universe" for songs in a similar direction.
If you want something a bit less intense maybe "Flying Whales" (Until it's not), "Born in Winter", "Only Pain" and "The Cell".
Basically on every song Mario impresses, so there are only a few that aren't pretty intresting for a drummer I'd guess.
Remembrance - from “the link alive” show.
This is from when they were much younger, like 2003. Any tracks from that concert would be a good reaction!
Mario was 22, and he composed the last part of the song to annoy Jean-Michel the bass player. So typical!
@@christellemercier9019 That breakdown was insane!
These guys opened for Opeth at the Red Rocks show you reacted to. He played an insane solo mid show that was magical in the venue.
I got to see Gojira with Behemoth, Volbeat and Slipknot. Was a fantastic show all around. Gojira's presence and sound is so awe inspiring. Mario is a beast that truely feels what he is doing. I very much enjoyed this video as well. Seeing a professional become a fan of another professional makes me smile. My favorite Gojira song would have to be "Oroborus" off The Way of All Flesh album.
Yes More Gojira on the way!
I really like the shit he does in their Gojira song "Of Blood and Salt". Go listen to that.
3:50 (TLDR; It's more fluid)
On the distance between the hat and snare; I asked a friend/prog metal guy who runs a similar setup.
He said it's much more "fluid"/efficient to have them spaced like that as it's a similar distance to other pieces you would be 'rolling' through as you work your way around the kit, something that's pretty common to the genre (using a lot of rolling tom and cymbals across the kit, even for core parts of a song where backbeats and more traditional "cross work" between hat and snare would take place).
The other reason he gave was that if you're moving quickly like this but also require a heavier use of force and less busy hat work, it's much easier to use some of the lateral energy of the arm and stick to strike more horizontally to the hat, (almost in a "push-pull' kind of way, but using the movement of the entire arm with the weight of the hand and stick) instead of having to waste energy raising your left hand up in an arc when switching between snare and hat.
Apparently this is also why it's more common to see metal guys run lower hats the further they get away from the snare (depending on the requirement of the playlist obviously).
The snare he's using is a Tama Mastercraft Bell Brass
Wow. Nice!
Bit of a correction here. It is a Tama bell brass PL-565(non-Mastercraft). Ever since I saw Abe Cunningham using one on the "White Pony" album I've been enamored with it.
That is why Danny Carey puts the Hi-hat where he does.
He uses Bell Brass Snares, but up til they re-released that snare was using the TAMA Star Bubinga snare to my knowledge- Mario is the best modern metal drummer because he is real and dynamic and a true artiste
This guy has amazing control and lives in the pocket
The gift of guilt is absolutely amazing. Wont be disappointed
About the hi-hat placement - while it's usually a product of using two bass drums more so than a double pedal, it looks like he has it that far out by design or maybe is using a legged stand. With a legless HH stand and a bass drum clamp, you could probably get it 6-8" closer (think HH pedal right next to the left bass pedal) Single kick/double pedal set ups give you more freedom on the placement of the slave pedal and the hi-hat. I guess that's his set up preference and it certainly doesn't hamper his playing. It's surprising what wacky set ups you can get used to by playing on them regularly.
This. The HH absolutely doesn't have to be placed differently if you don't want to!
If I recall correctly, Elliot Hoffman from Car Bomb puts his hi-hat between his snare and left bass pedal.
Vacuity was my first time listening to Gojira and ever since I've been hooked!.
Great to hear!
Yesss, love it.
My favourite solo of Mario (shortest one though) is the one in Poland Rock (lovely fat sounding drums), would be cool to see you reacting to it.
Some Band recommendations:
Remembrance Live at the Link Alive (this is some oldschool Gojira from 2003) mario was 22!
Pretty heavy, but digestable heavyness, if that makes sense.
In the forest also at the Link Alive concert, awesome song written by Joe (Mario’s brother) when he lived for over a year in the woods, some technical drumming as well.
Indians, live at the Vieilles charrues concert, some heavy, tech drumming.
So much more to recommend but i don’t want to overwhelm you.
Really hope you’ll continue reacting to them.
They’ve become much more progressive now and less death metal. It’s their natural evolution, said the frontman Joe. I like their evolution, even though, i really hope their new album that will be released next year, will go back to some technical guitar riffs combined with Mario’s lovely fills. Fingers crossed.
Cheers from Belgium
Thanks for the tip!
The Silver Cord Studio is owned by Mario's brother, Gojira's singer and lead guitar Joe Duplantier. Why in NY? Because their mother was Portuguese-American and he has American nationality, as well as French. She went to France to study, met her husband there and never left until her death in 2016. The Magma album is a tribute to her, since her parents were from the portuguese volcanic islands of the Azores. The brothers were raised and lived almost all their lives in France but they were always curious about their mother's roots, so they moved to NY in 2015 to build the studio in Queens.
On the topic of drummers with weird setups (and even weirder ways of playing), you should react to Jinjer's drummer, Vlad. There are some videos of him playing on Jinjer's official YT channel. I don't have a favourite because they're all good. : )
Looks like a nice studio!
Hey Andrew. The snare he's using is an original Tama Bell Brass 6.5 with Bell Brass hoops...beast!
Damn! Thanks Brent
Ahhh there you go!!!! Mario Duplantier tres ispirant!!! 🤘🏼
Hey Andrew, you can actually have your hihat really close to your snare even with a double pedal. Matt Garstka and Benny Greb as examples. It really depends on how you set up your kit and your playing style. Keep up the good videos 🤘
Yeah! Mario is so sick thanks for doing this one
No problem!
Bonne réaction Monsieur. Looking forward to seing you react to more live performances of them yeahhh. Viva Gojira
Can't wait!
The drum face
just beast !
The art of dying has a very cool intro
YES!!
Snare looks like a Tama Bell Brass 'Terminator'. One of the most expensive, sought after, drums you can buy. Certainly the hoops look like cast brass anyway.
Tama bell brass PL-565.
if you're gonna do more goh jee ruh i'd suggest Where Dragons Dwell mario has said that sometimes/when he extends the song on his part, on this song, he ends up going numb and starts getting close to unconsciousness, y'know what let me find the uh comment that relayed that...

*This is a from Mario's Instagram page posted from September 27th, 2019 *
"From Mars to Sirius was released 14 years ago, today.
Where Dragons Dwell from the album « From Mars to Sirius » is the most intense Gojira song to perform live. Especially because of the ending. This song, which speaks of confronting your own personal demons, always fascinated me with it’s demanding physical performance. The end section is a complete corporeal trance for me. With a relentless double kick pattern at 180bpm lasting from 4-9 minutes.
I use all the force in my knees and thighs to generate the energy required to execute this section. The first minute of demanding thirty-second notes is hard on my body, and the following minute is when my legs start to tingle. From that point on it’s so intense that my mind starts to drift a little.
With this intensity at a maximum level, sometimes the trance transports me beyond the pain. It even feels like my body is floating above the drum kit.
Naturally, when the song is over and I come out of the trance, there are consequences sometimes. When we extend the part for almost 10 minutes, I’ve actually felt like I was going deaf, and even had sensations of numbness in my pelvis and legs for a few seconds after the song is over." «#drums #gojira #power #frommarstosirius #wheredragonsdwell #hellfest2013 #deathmetal #heavymetal @officialtamadrums @zildjiancompany @hellfestopenair
so, yeah.
Now we talkin😁
The Cell has a really sick drum intro
Flying Whales
Heaviest Matter Of The Universe
The dragon track got me intreaged and since then they are amazing
Mentioned how you should do gojira the other day in your comments. Watching the video now my bad I didn't see. Mario is a beast. :]]] I saw you do the People = Shit live video also and I watch that one a lot personally since I got into them in the past few years. I was more into prog and into more melodic stuff at the time. You have covered most of the best drummers I personally enjoy. Portnoy is my favorite... Mangini, marco minneman, casey grillo, gavin harrison, etc. Not sure who to recommend LOL. I can't find good drum videos of Nevermore but I'd highly recommend checking them out. They are pretty metal. Same for Jason Rullo ( symphony x ). Also there are some pretty unknown prog bands like katatonia and riverside that are beyond phenomenal but they do not get enough recognition. May not be drum centric but you may appreciate the jams.
The link alive- "I Embrace The World"
“The cell” is worth doing.
Gojira is said "Go - geer- ra" love the so much. Silver Silvercord is his brother's studio. Some amazing records come out of there eg: Carbomb albums 🤘🏻
go-JEER-ah
Chris Coleman - Go 🤞🏻
Regarding the hi hat distance with two bass drums/double pedals, check out some pictures and live videos of Elliot Hoffman & Sean Reinert. They actually have their hi hats close by putting the second bass drum pedal on the outside of the hi hat pedal.
I think that's how I'd be comfortable. Prob depends on many factors including length of your limbs :)
Just yep
The City is another great solo by him
its pronounced just the way it is written. The "j" is the same "j" as "john" or "jack".
I second, i say gojira not gohira.
Je plussoie :)
Thanks Avo!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums It's Gojira, the Japanese name for Godzilla.
@@Qyngali french name for godzilla
@@lithiumscience6861 Japanese. Gojira ゴジラ. It's a Japanese character/movie franchise
“Not pre planned, but you should have drilled that in before hand” LMFAO
Massive myth.
'Improv'
All stuff that's been drilled previously in order to come out on call you need it... improv
there is a really good version of the song Where Dragons Dwell. Masterpiece.
MARIO DUPLANTIER DRUM SOLO 2022 IS OUT NOW :) ... \m/
I'll get there!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums shoutout to you Bro !!! ... Keep the Amazing Work \m/
You should react to Stranded Live at Pol'and'Rock it's one of there easier songs to get into the band and the whole Pol'and'Rock recording is awesome!
Toxic garbage island by gojira has some crazy drum parts
Mario is using a Tama bell brass snare
The snare is a Tama Bell Brass snare
Holy grail snare drum Pieter!
go-JHEE-rah
go-JHEE-rah
go-JHEE-rah
Don't forget. He's just "OK!" Drummer,😆
Yeah having your hi hat over there does take some getting use to. If you can find the right stand you can get it to fit on the other side of the bass pedal, but I recommend getting a remote stand if the gap is to much pedal or hat wise. You can even go crazy like Danny Carey's set up.
Great stuff Alin!
Go look the new Solo!!
On the way!
It might be a Tama Bell brass snare with the marching hoops?
Yes looks like it Ethan!
Only pain is a badass song from them, they have a lot of great ones that I think any metal fan would like such as stranded, vacuity, flying whales, Amazonia and some more I can’t think of right now are all great
Ah yes a Tama Bell Brass, companies like VK are recreating these as they are soo sought after.
check their "where dragons dwell" mario's kick was a beast!
If I'm repeating; I apologise.
Gojira (hard J) is the Japanese pronunciation of Godzilla (their original band name). The first Godzilla movie's name was spelled phonetically in America, as "Gojira."
Thanks Steve!
YES MORE MARIO!!!! PRAY LIVE AT RED ROCKS..THEN YOU'LL SEE WHAT HE IA CAPABLE OF...PEACE
Esoteric surgery by them has some great drumming
I would love for you to react to the Buddy Rich Memorial "drum battle" with Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Steve Gadd. It's some of the best soloing I've ever seen on drums and I haven't seen any drummer react to it yet.
One of the first reactions I did
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Oh man, I guess I'll have to go back and start at the beginning. Cheers!
I see a Yamaha snare. Is that what you play mate? I'm a Tama and Zildjian guy myself
Yeah I love Yamaha! 🙌🥁
Yo. I'm going to hit you with a COMPLETELY different genre but you should really check out KJ Sawka from pendulum playing through their song watercolour (the full title of the video is "KJ Sawka - Watercolour Live" on the pendulumlive channel). Dude is way overlooked imho.
I think that the snare is a TAMA bell brass
Oh wow!
Its Go jeera. It’s Godzilla in the actual Japanese if I’m not mistaken.
it's pronounced godshira btw... but they are also fine about gochira (ch like in chardonnay)
Gojira is with a Hard J
Named after Godzilla
Thanks Jack!
As someone correctly pointed out in a reply to a comment (that you likely wouldn't get around to seeing) "Gojira" is the proper Japanese pronunciation of "Godzilla." J as in "Japan."
Thanks!
Can you check a Christopher Wallerstedt ( band Orbit culture) song Nensha or At the front!
He uses a couple of different snares so it’s hard to say which one is in this video, but I know he rocks a full bubinga kit from tama so🤷♂️ just pick the most expensive snare money can buy from tama and you’ll probably be pretty close tone wise.
You should try The Gift of Guilt by Gojira
If you want groove. Check The Chant by Gojira
Awesome 🤘 🤘 🤘 🇧🇷
Double bass drummers don’t need their hi-hat that far from the snare, it can be mounted right next to the left pedal, or to the right of it. Some metal guys set up wrong in the beginning, & get used to it in that position.
Great reaction, remember to react to Aquiles Priester. Minds will be blown. 🤯
Let's hop a patron picks him soon!
Having the hats that far away sucks...let me tell you. Eventually if you get good enough... double bass drummers get racks with hydraulic hi-hat stands or have two sets of hats (one perma closed/one perma open)....or you become extremely ambidextrous and never cross over
You gotta check Work Shit Out - Dirty Loops.
Hey! Yup a Patron has picked it!
pls we need your reaction of Anthony Barone/BENEATH THE MASSACRE - Rise of the Fearmonger.
Can you do matt mcguire?
He's my favorite player 🥁🥁😁
If hostile aliens ever descend upon the Earth, show them videos of Mario , and of Gavin with P.T., and surely they will spare us...
The American English way of pronouncing Gojira is (Go Jee Rah) jee like jeez
Ken Bedene (Aborted) - Bit by Bit reaction pretty pleeease. There's an excellent drum playthrough video of that song and that video needs some attention it's the honestly the best drumming I have ever witnessed.
Sounds great!
Been waiting for someone to suggest this, it’s so different to any other drum solos and is executed perfectly!
Mario is such a heavy hitter, but his dynamics and accents in his fills are flawless!
You should check out this beast of a tune, try count it too haha
ua-cam.com/video/EtpC4ALOFEo/v-deo.html
Keep up the good work and stay safe man :)
Hi Andrew, if the band's name were to be spoken by either a French or Portuguese person, the J would have a soft J sound. As in the French pronoun "je" . If you are familiar with the French expression "Je ne sais quoi" you would have an idea what the J sounds like.
Thanks Jake!
You should react to jared dines videos about drums!! Those vids are really funny :)
React to Emilio Marquez - the heretic by possessed, unreal 🤟
Thanks Peter!
Go (as in god) - ji (as in "jig") - ra (as in raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah)
