What does this song mean to you?

thegreatmeasures@gmail.com
Shin pain from trying to keep up with that double pedal.
I'd sum it up as 'ultimately nothing means anything, and it doesn't mean anything that it doesn't mean anything'.
To me it is about learning to let go of your attachment to all things as you approach death, so you can go peacefully into the void without unfinished business. Mastering the art of dying.
It was this song that made me fall in love with Gojira. Contemporary Progressive Death Metal? C'mon, this is the bomb!
Its about learning how to live your life in a way that you're OK with dying when the time comes.
You're always dying. You're dying right now. The "art" of dying is actually learning how to live.
I love seeing professional musicians being so confused with the time signatures 😂
I recommended a spiritbox song on Patreon with one insanely strange time signature, something to look forwards to :)
@@Hinjima92what's the song
The fact that Judson liked the line about the light tells me he probably will like lyrics from The Heaviest Matter of the Universe :)
paranoid android and gojira,oh yes!
I've always interpreted this song as more of an ego death than a physical. That being said it fits the premise of a physical death very well too. The concept of leaving life without baggage has a freedom to it of letting go of the material and traveling light or the molecular degrading of our physical form as well as the mental freedom of guilt remorse regret etc.
Judson and Richard both make the point that it parallels both aspects depending on interpretation via present state and comments that it's what makes a song great. 100%.
When you make music you may have intent but you have no control of that once you present it to the world. Gojira manages to find that juxtaposition of intent and interpretation without missing no matter the route.
same, thats also how I viewed it, but we have a two-fold death... one psychological, metaphysical death that while "living" materialitically has maybe happend psychologically to the soul by the mundane live fed by tv and so on) and the real one as in the perishing of the vessel for the soul.
"From the Sky" is a lyrical masterpiece
ayyy
It is. We all know how great musicians and songwriters they are, but man, since I dug down into their lyrics I realized that they are on part with Death as my favorite lyrics in metal. Joe is such a lyrical genius, truly a clever and wise guy. No matter how much recognition their music and lyrics get or will get I will always think that theyre underrated, theyre just this good
Truly they are beyond good. They are on a spiritual level in a real way. Very close to my heart with some of their words. @@jez_77
“I know the words
But now I feel it inside
It grows, it's there
And all it comes
From the sky
From the sky”
This is also one of my favourite songs of all time, off my favourite gojira album. Just something about the brutality of everything, but theres still harmonic and melodic elements everywhere, with a groove that grabs you and throws you at the same time. My interpretation comes mostly from the "i will bring no material in the afterlife" line, in that those things and trinkets that we have are worthless in the grand scheme, compared to how valuable life(and death) is. Gives you an appreciation for the fact that youre here, and that sometime you will not be, and that you have to accept that.
Listening to the Art of Dying live was surely one of the highlights of my life, never felt this kind of power and energy. Especially when the intro ended and the riff kicked in and also when the middle part started with the huge accents and then quick double bass. Their live shows truly are out of body experience
I love how Judson's interpretation is basically on pair with Joe's thought behind the lyrics. The art of dying is the way of letting the material world go to focus on a deeper meaning of life and death and ultimately the importance of becoming the better version of ourselves as the main objective. Those three sections represent the protagonist realizing this - 1st very heavy part, the person speaking feels inprisoned by the material world, disconnected from reality, not able to experience the true feelings and emotions, the 2nd fast part is protagonist realizing the issue, fighting inside himself and finally releasing himself from that cage and being able to travel light (100% Joe meant light as an actual speed of light, not "without the weight", its very much on pair with other lyrics on this album), then the 3rd part with groovy repeated riff is I believe representation of protagonist being finally at peace with himself as he now understands the "art of dying" and the true meaning of life and death. The heaviest matter of the universe is an another lyrical gem in their discography beautifully describing love as the strongest and most powerful force in the universe, recommend checking it
great summary
To "travel light" you cannot have mass. That's why you can't take your possessions. Light has no mass.
Yes! People REALLY think that can’t “live” without material things but in the end, those things fade away and you can’t take them in the grave.
Can we just appreciate how Artistic Judson is?
I read in the comments he is autistic though? 😉
Legit the highlight of my morning haha. My fav Radiohead song plus my fav from Gojira. So glad I randomly found this channel!
L'enfant sauvage, the heaviest matter in the universe, born in winter
so amazing
every gojira song is good
Incredible that you are giving a platform to an artist like Judson
"travel light"... a double photondre
It's songs like this where the Richard cam pays for itself. The reaction to Judson's reaction is priceless.
I LOVE that you’re delving into the lyrics and having a heartfelt conversation about it. Most don’t! Thank you for “being intelligent” about it.
“I’d rather travel light!” ❤
Can't wait for "Flying Whales" and "The Heaviest Matter of The Universe". What introduced me to Gojira when looking for heavy songs for Clone Hero years back.
This is my favorite song of all time! Thank you guys for this video I love all your videos keep it up!
“It’s hard to interact with a world when you realize you have to detach from the world to really understand the world. “ Gonna ruminate on these words for a minute.
Nuggets like these are why I watch your videos!
Oh this will be a good one. This is a good way to start the day 🤘
That's my favorite Gojira song as well, great pick and great review :)
This track always just SLAPS! Seen Gojira live multiple times and this is always the highlight. Such a phenomenal and powerful song. Tell Judson he's cute.
Awww shucks…thanks!
The Art of Judson
This is exactly what I want to watch over my morning cereal. Seeing them live is life alerting, seeing them play The Art of Dying was other worldly.
man would love to see more gojira reaction FR
omg that radiohead intro ooof.. that was amazing, makes me wanna learn to play jsut that on piano
What a great, great, great episode, gentlemen! Apart from the great band (and the great measures), i also had a great laugh listening to you two, lol. And just earlier today i ve told my buddy about your channel emphasizing what a great metal-artistic ;-) duo you guys make!
Shout out to the spectrum ! ❤
Go spectrum homies!
I must have heard this sing a thousand times but this is the first time I've picked up on a tribal flute just before the guitars kick in at the beginning. I bloody love Gojira
😂 mate is right there second 1 😅
A wild NPC suddenly gains the power of sentience. Maybe next time you’ll realize it’s not a flute but a didgeridoo 😂😂😂
@@tim.noonan nah different to the didge
i love this song, ive been waiting a while for this reaction.
There’s the art of letting go - in the dying sense - while being at peace with the life you’ve lived, traveling to the ‘other side’ without your proverbial baggage. And there’s the art of letting go of the unimportant things while you are alive. Engaging with the world around you is the fabric of life, and knowing when and how to detach *is* an art form.
I can totally see why you say this song can reflect different moods!
-Everyone is a diagnostician these days, of strangers no less 🤦🏻
I love those Radiohead's intro. One of the best Gojira' songs, without a doubt.
Great analysis, guys. ✌️
The best way I can describe how I feel about Gojira is by quoting the words of @chrisbreatheslove, and it goes like this:
"Listening to Gojira has been one of the major pleasures of my life. Truthfully my favorite metal band.
The raw rich beauty speaks to the bone. The passion and emotions of a spiritual being on a human path. Just epic.
I hope everyone's life aligns at some point like this and to listen to this is a reflection of our innermost humanity."
Nice breakdown! Just love this bad, saw them live a while ago...can't wait to get blasted again :) Good job Great Measures.
Every Gojira fan: "THIS PART IS BRUTALLLL"
Judson: *not impressed face*
🤟Keep Measuring guys you're great I'm enjoyng to discover new music and laugh at the end with your reaction👍 That's my possitive comment for you🤟
Great choice! One of my favorites. You should do Tool Pushit salival
love Gojira and the later albums just keep getting better !
Love you guys
I loved your analysis! I do tend to interpret "travel light" as not being weighed down with earthly possessions and preoccupations, but your first impression is insightful and we can look at it two ways and add to the artistry. That sound in the intro was actually the lead singer throat singing as he has trained himself to do so. But if you want didgeridoo, the Australian prog band Karnivool has a masterpiece song called Change Part 2 with a didgeridoo section that I would love your take on. Similar vibes, different heaviness.
Gojira r very interesting. Lyric & music wise. 1 of best Modern day Metal Bands. They r amazing live as well.
I knew when he was playing paranoid android, soo soo good! And now Gojira😂 this will be great, one of my fave from this band.
Would love to see you cover Gojira "Space Time" (which would be a fantastic song for Gojira to do with a symphony), "Low Lands" (a tribute to the singer & drummer's mom) and/or "Embrace the World".
Oh fuck yeah, The Way of All Flesh! Love that record. Maybe surprise Judson with the more approachable stylings of A Sight to Behold, or just go for Flying Whales next since it's such an essential part of Gojira's catalogue?
You should react to some more Meshuggah, Sublevels is my pic.
This era of Meshuggah is much more musical compared to Bleed, very jazz inspired, and much groovier if you ask me
I suggest clockworks, swarm or Dancers to a Discordant System. They would translate well
Great song by a great band!
Hey, have youbever thought of giving IGORRR a go? Something like Himalaya massive ritual or IEUD!
Every song on this album is so good
Awesome, I was waiting for this reaction! I'd love to see/hear your reaction/interpretation of Pat Metheny's Roots of Coincidence 😅
one of the top 10 metal songs ever made
Over the last decade, Gojira has ultimately become one of my favorite bands of the genre. I’ve seen them live twice…just to be able to watch Mario Duplantier play those drums live!!!
I LOLd at Judson mentioning mean comments about people calling him autistic. 😆 I've definitely been called autistic a few times in my life so that's not a dig at Judson, I consider it a compliment at this point.
Really enjoying the content from you guys. Refreshing to hear some in depth perspectives to Metal music accompanied by some formal musical knowledge. Judson is a true class act by usually always finding something positive to say even if he didn't like a song as a whole.
Really appreciate honesty and comprehensive analysis with music reactions. You guys are killing it. 🪦🙏
You should also listen to the end part of the song in reverese, is a reveresed part from the song Esoteric Surgery.
Cool interpretation guys
the entire album revolves around a creature that is constantly reborn, the songs themselves are in order - from birth to eventually accepting death. theres a song at the very end of this album that is basically coming to terms with death. this one is 8/12, with the 12th (the way of all flesh) being the end...only to spiral back aorund to "oroborus" which is a fitting name
Love the metal logo 😂
Gift of guilt is my favorite with this as a close second
Would love to see you cover Heaviest Matter of the Universe as far as Gojira songs go. Sure, not one of their most complex ones, but damn it's good.
I'm here for the piano playing at the beginning
Great measures!
What a nice rendition of Paranoid Android at the beginning ...
5:23 here is when Gojira confuses the musicians with his crazy timing
Stranded is my favorite Gojira song
I'm rocking on Anti Hero by God Forbid today.... good Ole Ozzfest days, right Richard?
This band has soo many good songs but this song is one hell of a song!!! The drums are SO good!!!!
I'm with ya Richard. Might be my fave Gojira track. This or Heaviest Matter in the Universe. Probably this
I'm partial to backbone
You guys should try next
Slice the Cake - odyssey of the West
Deep thoughts for a Wednesday morning.
So deep I just realized it's Tuesday.
@@charlescook1749 I was about to say...
Had me second guessing myself.
I'd really be interested to see an Isis song here, would it be Backlit, Holy Tears, So Did We, Dulcinea or In Fiction. I like most of the videos i watched on this channel, please keep going!
Some Dillinger Escape Plan.
Fatewell Monalisa or Widower, please.
Radiohead!
Avantgarde metal🤯
Yeeeeeaah❤
GOJIRA YES !!
T-shirt today
Would love to see a Reaction to some Obscura
This song hits so hard, even years after discovering it
I never could figure out the polyrhythm in this song on guitar...they have some tough ones...the cell is also tough...I finally figured it out, but if I don't play it for like a week I forget it again
I appreciate y'all's artism 👍🤙
I agree... this is the best Gojira song. And might even be a top 10 metal song of all.
Beste Live Band 🤘
I don't know but have you ever demonstrated Devin Townsend or Strapping Young Lad on here? I think it would make for an entertaining video.
You guys should do the version of Pray they did for Red Rocks.
my favorite Gojira song has to be the title track of the album, such a powerful song were the first half is just pure anger and the second and the ending are the acceptance of dying and ultimatly dying
How can anyone like this stuff and not like Death… it’s just beyond me
Remember ... You are on Super Mario time. It is the correct time, every time.
Everyone who likes this song should definitely check out the live 2010 version from the Vieilles Charrues Festival
I love seeing the difference between Richard and Judsons listening reactions 😂
Gojira - shooting star live in studio.
Love this song. My favorite and first song I ever heard by them is Vacuity.
He should give that one a listen, just not the music video because it cuts a bunch out.
Hey guys really like your show, I think it would be awesome If you reacted to some Paradise lost, I can suggest the song Darker Thoughts from them
F*ck yeah!
I wonder if Judson would like Stranded or Amazonia by Gojira? Those are two of my favorites.
You should give him another one of Opeth's softer tunes. Get him to listen to Isolation Years or something.
Esoteric Surgery please❤
I personally have ARTism 😂❤
Vacuity, Heaviest Matter of the Universe, or Backbone!
I think The Gift of Guilt and L'Enfant Sauvage are must listen now guys
in some ways the art of dying, is the art of living ... cuz as long as we are living we are also dying
Can’t remember if the Gojira song you did was Flying Whales, but if not, this one needs to be done.
WARGASM....DRILDO...
@greatmeasures you guys should react to Space Time off Gojira’s first album!!
Their first album was insane. To come out of the gate with that is wild.
