  • Today I realise the farmyard is not the ideal place to strip down the Subaru engine.
I face an issue caused by the lack of equipment, and ask for YOUR help to track down someone!

Working in the dirt. We've all been there at your age. I'll be doing something similar at Santa Pod this long, 6 night in a tent weekend.
One day you'll own your own workshop, then business. Great view.

Its hard outside of your normal environment Issac. I did it in 1989, Bedford TK 220 D with horse box, next door neighbours daughter had a show horse, bought the truck with a bad engine. So, I said yes in the stable yard! Head off, sump off, gearbox out and me and her brother lifted it onto a car Jack (1/2 ton) on a piece of hard board on top of horse s’’’t. Rebored and crank ground after full strip at the garage i was working at (Scania main dealers). Luckily I spent 10 years working on Bedfords at the main dealers so knew the short cuts. Refitting was a nightmare. we live and learn. Stay at it and stay well.

Deep clean a corner of your workshop Isaac and put a clean bench in there too. Or maybe put a small shed in there and keep it super clean. An engine stand would be a great investment too mate. Small steps mate!! 👍

stripped my 1st kent crossflow kerb side in the street ,but that was back in early 90,s and diy was fashonable ,and before karen neighbors were invented ,we just had curtain twitchers, simpler days !
and found out siezed studs or bolts when the engine is free to move around is asking for a sliced or crushed hand so the trick was to take as much appart as possible before removing the block from the car

Changing a clutch on an FD victor in November when it is raining is plenty of fun. Well it was in the mid 70's.

First engine removal i did was from an Austin Mini Van in the late 60’s and it started snowing heavily when I had to work underneath the car in the alley at the back of my parents place; couldn’t afford an engine hoist so I dropped the whole thing out on the subframe, while I lifted the body with a makeshift A-frame! I’ve had a bad back ever since!

See if theres any second hand work beches close by, having a good set up to work from home makes life so much easier, we've all done stuff like this when young and soon realise essential stuff to buy or make for an easier life. Be good to see you come on with your own engines. Well done

In my younger days, early 1980's, very poor with a young family. I had a collection of 1100 and 1300 ford engines, and a Ford Mk2 Escort with a tired engine. I stripped all of these in my back garden, washed in petrol all the parts and selected all the better 1300 components, including main and big end shells. The only difference between the 2 sizes is crank and rods, just different throw and length, blocks are identical. The only new component was an oil pump, which I swapped for all the remaining parts at an engine recycler. The best bitza engine ran like a dream for the rest of the time I had it, no rattles or oil burn.

    Hello Isaac,
Just a comment for the algorithm...
    Lovely part of the world..
Did all the old benches from work go to the scrap??
Still, working off a pallet will make you appreciate more working on a good bench with lighting, electric and air...
    From central France,
    Cordialement..

When you’re young you think you are indestructible, in my teens and 20’s took engines out with a rope round my neck, gearboxes out lying underneath the car on axle stands. Now in my 70’s sitting watching you with a constant pain in my lower back. Also my last job involved lifting heavy machinery on to a bench .Boss was too tight to buy an engine lift .

Can't you use the facilities at work? Surely there's a corner you could work from in your lunch breaks or after hours. good video. I'm currently restoring a 96 V2 JDM Impreza so will be following.

Did that working in the dirt thing when I was a mechanic for a banger driver. can't beat being under a car on a gravel pit area between races, when you're trying to get a car out for the next race/heat

Looking at the clean area on pistons = piston slap due to being run on low octane fuel and the Teflon will be gone of the piston skirts etc (pistons expand to much on low octane ) can hear it straight away on start up.

Hey mate nothing wrong with stripping your engine outside in the dirt only needs to be clean when going back together, you're right it's a lovely view and you don't need to hide behind those sunglasses

No shame in having to work in the driveway. Hopefully, you get a hold of Duncan. I'll stand behind my previous recommendation of larger injectors. You've got more volume in the cylinders, but having a professional opinion is wise.

Learning as I go, you’re completely right about the crib sheet, was exactly what I was doing 😂 3 videos in and I’m already feeling a lot more confident, I’m sure soon I’ll be much more confident in myself. All a bit alien to me at the minute!
Thanks for your support I do really appreciate it!

I've been stripping and rebuilding engines and other stuff in farmyards for 50 odd years, it's a bit of a challenge but can be done successfully. It is probably fare to say race quality engines should not be done this way though.
