Just changed the alternator today on my 2009 4Runner, this video was the only thing I watched, never worked on a car before, got it done in a day, great video thank you so much
Holy cow, a guy who can make a quality how to video! Quick concise dialogue, good camera work and knowledge. You must be the rarest breed of person on earth! 👍
Amen!
Pretty handy guy myself, wasn't scared to take on an alternator replacement but this saved me a TON of time listing tools and belt routing. Kudos sir, very much appreciated.
Just replaced my alternator last night with the help of this video which was crucial! Thank you so much!!
G K Glad the video was helpful. Thank you for watching!
My dad and I replaced the altinator in my 2007 4Runner today. Had a few hiccups but thank you for this helpful video. Just wish mine came apart and went back together as easy as yours looked to do. 😅
Oh man! Thanks much for posting this video! I was able to get it switched out and replaced all for 150 bucks while the auto shop wanted to charge me 500$ for all of it! Keep doing what you are doing! Helping a lot of people on here!
Where u get 1 for a 150? Mine cost 250
@@dustinconnolly7258 haha well this was 3 years ago so I’m wondering if prices have gone up since then but I got mine at AutoZone-no issues or anything since then.
Thank you so much! My alternator went out and all the other videos were talking about removing sway bars, etc. and then I found your video. Watched the video a couple of times and then took my laptop out with me to have the video to refer to and I was able to change it. I don't know how much money you saved me, but I feel sure it was a lot. Thank you!!
Glad the video helped you get back on the road! Thank you for watching!
For anyone after me, the V8 has it on the far side of the engine and I think that is the sway bar videos just mentioned. The V8 videos I saw didn't always mention the engine at first or in the title, but this (V6) video DOES.
Great help, Brian! Taking off the clips, the battery tray to start made all the difference. Perfect video for my 2006 Tacoma. Thanks a bunch.
Great video as always. Especially like the use of tools tips like breaking something loose with one type of tool and then speeding it off with a lighter duty cordless tool. the experience you share is priceless!!!
Replaced my alternator, bro thank you ao much!!! Saved me time and money, funny thing with these 4th gens, when the alternator goes bad yr dash lights UP!! ABS, BRAKE, AIRBAG LIGHTS all go off. Had no idea til a guy who knew what he was talking about told me the alternator, I had the fuses checked all the wires everything was good! I popped 3 battery's including an optima red top all leaked acid everywhere. Wish I saw this video earlier it would've saved me a ton more time and money.
This video was very helpful and walked me through the steps that I would have not seen to do. Great job, thanks.
Brian, You do an outstanding job explaining procedures on your videos. Makes it much easier for us diving into these type of repairs.
Caldi pro thank you glad to help. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the video. I began by taking out my battery and then clearing a path. I was able to use a socket wrench with a pry extension to pull up the tensioner and loop the belt off. The rest was the same as the video. When done, I looked over everything to make sure the belt was still in all the groves. To adjust, I just pulled and held the tensioner (I actually pried mine up with a bar to the inside quarter panel- made it easier for me.) 2005 4Runner SR5 4.0
Just did “2 hours labor” for this, I owe ya lunch
Very well done....all of your "How To" videos are well done. I followed your great instructions with a couple of minor exceptions. I didn't remove the tensioner pulley but did remove top portion of radiator hose and my skid plate was off. The battery was already out (had to be replaced) and belt was off as it had broken/shredded due to alternator pulley freezing up. Ended up snaking old alt. out the bottom, but somehow the replacement dropped back in through the opening at top(??).
Your video was a big help.....especially in locating all the connectors and 10mm bolts. Thank you for your help. EL
I truly do appreciate this because me and my stepdad have been struggling so now we know we need to take the idler pulley off
Hey just wanted to thank you for making this tutorial, had to remove and reinstall my alternator and your instructions helped a novice like me figure it out!
Thanks for the video. Changing my alternator tomorrow after work and really appreciate your videos
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate this video. I have a 2006, and had to swap out my alternator. This information was EXACTLY what I needed to put everything back together. I was trying to hold the tensioner from up top, and it just does not work. I also did not know about the pin (Allen wrench) insert, to keep the tensioner at bay. Man! What a help you were. THANK YOU. Do you have a patreon page?
This video was helpful. Changed out the part today. Thanks for making the video 💯
Perfect video. Just performed this replacement on a 2006. Extremely helpful.
Thank you so much for making this video bro.the fact that you showed every step and took your time literally saved ass. Thank you! thank you so much!!!
Hope so. I gotta do this in the Advanced Auto parking lot tomorrow. Lol
One thing you said that i liked, tork specks . So important. Thank you .
Wow! I did this on a 2007 4Runner. Watched this video one time through and tackled the repair. The only hiccup was the new alternator took some extra elbow grease to get the lower bolt all lined up but a file, WD40, and taking the top back loose to get the bottom back on. Otherwise easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy.
Thank you! I just finished mine up and this video was a great help. You explained everything perfectly.
Caden F Glad the video is helpful. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for an informative and helpful video. I have an 06 Tundra with a 4.0 liter V6 and could not find an instructive video for my truck, but this one served perfectly. Start to finish I was done in an hour.
Gary Graves Glad the video was helpful and your back on the road. Thank you for watching!
doing this on 06 tundra, v6 tomorrow.
Thanks doe video
This video is the best at step by step describing the fix . Some videos show the removal of pieces out of order
Bill Cassidy thank you glad the video is helpful. Thank you for watching!
Just did mine today and this video helped so much! Thank you for making it!!
Harrison price glad the video was helpful. Thank you for watching!
I cannot thank you enough for this video. Saved me hundreds of dollars.
Happy to hear that. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this vid...we be lost without it...worked just like you said it would......woot!!!
What was the brand of the ratchet wrench that you used to remove the bolts securing the alternator to the engine block?
The link in Amazon is not the same wrench as the one you used in the video.
Well done. Perfect explanation. Wish all mechanical videos were like this one. Will go ahead, change my alternator and comment.Thank you very much Brian.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the excellent tutorial, perfect.
Save me a few hundred dollars today. I am not very mechnically inclined, but was able to do this thanks to your instruction in a couple of hours!
I heard this has the same engine as the 2005 tundra v6 4.0?
If so please confirm and if the layout of the belt is the same format??? Thanks for the video
I'm a jet mechanic by trade but it was still nice to get a quick preview and run down on tooling and what not. Thanks for the quick how to brother.
AWESOME step by step informative video, thank you!!
Is this the same concept on a 2005 Tacoma pre runner?
Great video - thank you! Make sure to check your warranty on the old alternator. I got lucky and found mine was under lifetime warranty from Napa.
Thanks for this video very helpful 👍with my Tacoma thanks again
Super helpful video. Thanks!
Linked to this video on our last upload. Thanks for the great instructional!
Trail Benders Overland thank you so much for sharing the video!
Excellent, awesome video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
itaintmebabe99 thank you for watching!
Is the voltmeter check at the end a necessary step? Doing this myself without one, I'm weighing having the car towed to a service shop vs. the expense of buying a voltmeter. Or can I just see if the car runs fine after the installation? Thanks for the great video, subscribed!
Thanks for the video! I found it easier to do the bottom bolt first. It was harder to align the bottom hole once the top bolt was in. The torque spec for these two bolts seems to be 32 ft⋅lbf.
Just followed this guide and it was perfect. Thankyou
Terrence G glad the video helped and thank you for watching!
Fixed mine thanks to this vid
Thanks for the video! And thanks to Jursaw who commented about not removing the idler pulley - a little less room, but not necessary to remove. I changed the alternator on my friend’s 05 yesterday. Hardest part was breaking the bolts loose. Someone torqued those suckers down! Used PB Blaster and a breaker bar.
Also had trouble removing the nut off the positive lead - the brass stud - on the alternator itself. Ended up just cutting the nut off.
The Original EB glad the video helped. I like that when it got tough you made it happen👍🏻 Thank for watching!
How to Automotive - Thanks! I’ve changed alternators on v-drive engines and had to use the old crowbar method to tighten them. And it’s been a few years. But I’ve never changed one with a serpentine belt.
I figured I would have a hard time with the bolts because I’m weaker now due to an illness, so I asked my friend’s 18 year old to come help (son of the car owner) since he is learning how to do his own work. But he was unable to break them loose, and had to leave to get to work.
I have to give my dad credit for teaching me how to work on my first car - a ‘65 Mustang that I still have. He’s an aircraft mechanic for FedEx and taught me a lot. But he won’t touch newer cars because he hates all the electronics! Lol
Thanks again for the video. Your’s was the first one I found on the subject, and since the comments said other videos were more complicated, I didn’t even bother looking at others. As I mentioned, I’m sick now, so I haven’t been able to do a lot for a couple of years. Your simple video gave me the confidence to try and a great sense of accomplishment, not to mention saving my friend the expense of having her car towed and fixed at a shop. TMI, I know, but I wanted you to know this. New subscriber here!
Awesome video! doing mine this weekend.
Andrew Hall sorry your having car troubles. But I glad the video will help. Thank you for watching!
Great video. Clearview and detailed instructions.
Carlos berrios thank you and thank you for watching!
What type of alternator would you suggest for someone with a lot of electrical features likes subwoofers and lights
How do I find the vvt valve on 06 SR5 4RUNNER?
What do you recommend for a squeaky belt after alternator replacement?
Great vid! I have the prior version of the Milwaukee 3/8 ratchet how much better is the newer version? I was thinking of getting the 1/4" version also.
bill beckett Bill The new 1/4 ratchet is an amazing tool. Here is a little review video I made to help you decide. ua-cam.com/video/YZxeP7RuLus/v-deo.html
Will it work with a tundra as well ?
Thanks for that your instructions helped me out heaps
Excellent how to. Thank you
Thank you so much for this, you’re the man!
Jonathan thank you very much and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video. Used this to change the alternator on my wife's 07 4runner
spitvipe Glad the video was helpful. Thank you for watching!
Great succinct video. Thank you.
Very helpful. With mine, the small bolts holding the wiring harness were fused on. I would suggest lots of penetrating spray and set time to let it work. I had to cut the heads off.
My two 14mm bolts were super tight as well. Last person in there probably got carried away tightening things down.
this video helped me out so much, thank you for the awesome video and instructions!!!
Glad the video helped you out. Thank you for watching!
Great video, like to see more 4th gen.☺️
Any tips on a video for the v8 engine? The alternator is actually on the bottom of the engine bay, so... not right next to the battery.
Just swapped mine out today. Thanks a ton for this. Belt diagram was also very helpful
Glad the videos helpful. Thank you for watching!
How many miles did you have on it when you swapped it out. I just had mine done today, I have an 06 Sport V6 with only 92,000 miles. I'm surprised it went out.
@@tigergreg8 257k miles about to tackle this now 😂
@@rahsomali Wow. I wonder why mine went so quick then.
Thank you this video helped a bunch
Great stuff, thanks Brian
I really like you state what model year the vehicle is in the beginning. Good job!
Sunny Chandler Glad you like it. Thank you for watching!
Awesome video btw!
Thank you for the video!! It was alot of help. Did anyone have a problem with the battery light flashing after new alternator installed? I installed new alternator and a new battery and a couple days later the battery light started flashing. Maybe no voltage return to the ECM? But thanks for the video I was able to change the alternator out with no problems!
Thank you for the video. I didn’t have to remove idler pulley on 2009 V6. 👍😄
I didn't either on my 07
Thanks for the video.
I like your video ! I done my work, thank for your videos
I made the mistake of first following the directions in my 2005 4runner Chiltons book. After removing all the underside engine skid plates at their direction, including jacking up the front end, it appeared they wanted me to take it out from below, including unbolting the AC compressor. After which, and before unbolting the compressor (no easy job either), I looked at the situation and scratched my head thinking there must be an easier way? Time for Google and UA-cam! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...you made it all so much easier. I didn't have to remove that idler pulley by managing to get a socket onto the alternator lower support bolt. Other than that, I followed your instructions to a T and it wrestled right out and the new one back in it's place.. This was by far the hardest alternator replacement on any car I have ever owned. You made it easier in the end :-)
Marshall Colley I’m glad the video helped you out. i’m sure you saved a bunch of money as well. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video, it saved me alot of money.
Always happy to hear that! Thank you for watching!
Used this video to quickly replace the alternator in my '07. Thanks a lot!
Part held up? Did you buy new or remanufactured? Asking bc I’m doing this today but I got a remanufactured and wife is mad, wanted me to get her a new one. Wondering if it would matter..? 😅
@@royescobar556 Mine was remanufactured, holding up fine; how would the wife even know? ;)
Great video and great audio description!!!
ItsAlive111 thank you. Did everything go smooth for you?
How to Automotive I’m just looking into how to do it. My 2004 V6 4runner will need a new belt in the near future so this helps. Thank god I don’t need an alternator. 171k miles and going strong
great thank you . take the battery out first thing. the bottom bolt on the new alt did not line up. i needed to adjust the insert on the back side of alt to make it work. before you install the new check the bottom bolt
Thank you for this video! It really helped when was replacing the alternator on my 07. Bottom bolt was a bear to get out but other than that it wasn’t bad.
Glad you got it done. Thank you for watching!
Great video man. I wish I had watched this video before I had my car towed to the shop.
John Moring that sucks sorry your Alternator went out. Thank you for watching!! How much do they charge you?
I should find out tomorrow. He's a great guy, I've been doing business with him off and on for about 20 years. Your video on this is great, very clear and thorough. An electric ratchet looks like something I'll be buying soon. Thanks again, I subscribed to you so, I look forward to future videos. I'll let you know what the final bill comes out to.
Just finished replacing my alternator, this video was a great help! Thank you!
Bill Stallard glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
Do you know how to rebuild alternators?
Beautiful
I did it, no issues. Pulling the alternator out was the hardest part.
Glad it went smoothly. Thank you for watching!
This video helped me out a lot thanks 🙏🏽
Dre The great glad the video helped. Thank you for watching!
How to Automotive thanks for posting
Thanks for the video. Helped me make $100 replacing my neighbors 2008 Tacoma.
Thx bro your video was very helpful
Thank you for watching!
Amigo cómo reemplazo el tensor de la faja?? Hace mucho quiso
When reinstalling the bracket onto the side of the alternator the bolt below the harness can be accessed from the fender. I spent half an hour putting that bracket back on before I saw you can get to it from the side. Still can't fit a socket on the bolt because of the frame
I stripped out the head of one of the alternator bolts on the bottom side of the alternator? Any tips on how to remove it?
Rcs_80 I would recommend getting the GearWrench Bolt biter extraction sockets. You can order just one size or a whole kit they work great for that.
Do you recommend going ahead and putting a new pulley and belt on while everything is off?
If there’s a ton of miles on the car yes
Good video!
Luke Skywalker thank you. Love your channel name 👍🏻
So was the battery not getting charged or was it just for preventative maintenance?
Ron Steurer this one had a bad Bearing
Anyone have any tips for a stuck idler pulley bolt? Can’t get it off for the life of me. @HowToAutomotive
I’m having some major trouble with the alternator bolts. Just pb blasted them and will try and break em loose… any suggestions? Is my extension too long at 2” , I think? I’ve almost rounded off the bottom bolt😐
The shorter the extensions the more torque you can put on fasteners. Definitely try a shorter one. Also if you have a longer ratchet try that.
So why does my alternator pulley seize up as soon as I tighten down the lower bolt to hold it in place. It spins freely as soon as you loosen it up. I barely have it tighten down too not even to 16ft lb
Awsome job
Imran Abbasi thank you!
Serious question-i need to borrow tools
Minimal
I need only a 10 n 14 mm?! Wrench and socket set?
I just did mine yesterday and found that I needed a breaker bar to loosen the bottom bolt holding the alternator. Aside from that, what he shows in the video will be all you need.
What was the failure mode of the alternator?
Bad Bearing making noise
Can it drop out the bottom ?
