Great video, dealership wanted $1150 to do the job. I did look to see if it would be a little easier to not pull the fan and bring it out the bottom by dropping the sway bar, but I ended up pulling the fan the way you did. One thing I did do differently that worked out really well was instead of pulling the power steering pump I just pulled the pulley off of it. Super easy, bolt came right off and the pulley was not pressed on. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video, it took me 4 hours with just basic tools.
Only items I had to remove was radiator over flow tank and power steering pump pulley. Everything else was done from underneath vehicle and thru the passenger side front tire wheel well. Took about 45 minutes to remove and about a hour and a half to install everything. This was for a 2007 4Runner with V8 engine.
I just did this job too! Only thing I did different was pulled the pulley off the power steering pump. And disconnected and reconnected the alternator from the bottom. But I had to pull the rad hose to get the new alternator on. Definitely wasn’t easy. Thanks for the video. Saved me a ton of cash!
Great video. Comments- 1. I didn't need to remove the fan or than shroud 2. I took off the sway bar and both front wheels for access 3. I took off the top bung on the power steering pump to get wrench access on the top power steering 4. Bleed air from ps pump on startup
This was a great video! The only thing I would add is when you said to take the right wheel off, you need to unsnap the splash cover to gain access to the rear flange bolts on the power steering pump and the electrical hookups on the alternator. I didn't realize that until I was putting it back together.
I've done this job three times, once from the bottom and twice from the top. With and without removing the fan and shroud. My opinion is it's best to remove the fan shroud and go from the top, you still have to unplug the harness and battery wire from the right wheel well, but removing the fan and shroud isn't that hard and makes it so much easier. A couple things I did different to make it easier. First, leave the fan clutch on the engine, just unbolt the plastic fan from the fan clutch, and pull it out with the shroud, but you will have to flex the shroud around the clutch...it will bend without breaking don't worry. Second, although the power steering pump does need to be unbolted, there is an easier way. Instead of unbolting the whole power steering pump bracket assembly. Just unbolt the power steering pump from it's bracket, leaving the bracket on the engine. You do this by loosening two bolts and a nut through the holes in the power steering pulley. Toyota did you a favor here.
That's insane! Just to replace the alternator? Wonderful. I think I'm gonna have to replace mine and now I'm certainly not looking forward to it. Thanks Toyota engineering! Are you kidding me! I replaced one on my 2003 E350 diesel van in about 30 minutes. This looks like a half day at least!
Hi Jimbo, But still I got the job done. Right? On my time, right? Well, There is always a short cut repair that someone has done. Show me your shorter way and not just say I took the scenic route. Ok brother thank you for watching. But have you ever thought? “Though this guy did the long way, he showed how to remove other parts to get to the alternator and put everything back correctly. Didn’t you learn something out of that? Everyone is looking at the quickest fastest way to not waste their time. I get it. Thanks for the comment
Fix It Angel Good job. I hate texting because people like my wife take it wrong. The “long way”,meant not the short way,but the shorter way. I hope you got that. That the right way to do it but there’s always another. That sounds better. The alternators today are no good. That’s why I got a lifetime warranty.😇
Great job and video. Thank you for sharing. I wish you were here in FL I need to have mine done. What is the labor time involved in this job. Just trying to figure if I want to tackle it myself.
save your self 4 hours and just take it out the bottom, remove skid plate, remove belt, loosen steering pump, and remove the alternator. reinstall in reverse order. done.
Aaron Abraham I wish I could see that in video. Should be easy enough since you saying it could be done in 30 minutes. I don’t think it can be done from the bottom. But if you have video that would be great.
@@Tahara-Aichi I just got done removing it from the bottom. Only thing that gets in the way are a few hoses that need to be pushed out of the way by removing supports. @@westtexasduster I just did it from the bottom. Only complicated part is using rachet straps or something to back out the bolt on the pulley because it wants to spin. This pulley is directly infront of the alternator. I used two rachet staps hooked into the holes on the pulley.
wow, how much did you get the vat 45 for? wish i had that at home. how many hours of labor do you charge? nice video. great for the do it yourself guy. good people like you help people. i like it.
Angel, I have a 3rd gen 4runner with 221k miles on it.. should I replace my alternator as preventative maintenance? Or should I just replace the brushes? Should I do OEM or aftermarket? Thanks
why didn't you take off the passenger wheel and go in from there? slides right out but still a pain in the ass. nice of Toyota to put one way down there out of the way.
Nelson Cady hi, you are the second person that asked me that. Well, this is my way. Though it's a longer way to do it, I am ok with that because I got the job done. Every one has a different way of doing things and that's ok. Thank you for the question.
Will Fischer because I needed to. Have you tried replacing your alternator yet? Sometimes you just have to do it to know yourself. Thanks for watching.
Ok thank you , I might have to replace the alternator , all my lights went dim , battery light came on , and loss of power till I stalled out , The belt is on good , so we're thinking it's the alternator that went . Just never tackled it ...
This video is way overdone. I watched it and was like there's no way it takes this much work. Take off the intake and upper radiator hose as well as overflow tank. Disconnect battery. Remove belt. Unbolt both the alternator and power steering pump. Remove from the TOP. Don't be like this dude and take the fan and shroud off that's just stupid. Btw you're welcome!

at 438K miles, I now get to do this. First major repair since I bought it in 2003.
Damn! Original transmission? I have a 2008 2UZFe
@@nordicpride9708 Yep, it was starting to need CV and other stuff so it went down the road at 446K. Replaced by a tundra.

Very smart putting cardboard behind the radiator to protect it. Do all techs at dealerships do that?

what i saw on the repair manual is what i did. there is a quicker way that others do from the bottom and you can follow that.
