1999 Toyota 4Runner Alternator Replacement and Wire Repair | How to tell if your Alternator is Bad

- I was in the process of replacing my timing belt when I noticed the 3 pin plug for the alternator had a corroded/burned pin. I had a Denso remanufactured alternator I planned to put in during the timing belt job since I was having electrical issues. I ordered a new connector pigtail and I show you how to install it properly. I wasn't originally planning on showing how to replace the alternator but since the new remanufactured one was bad out of the box, I show how to swap it out. Hope this was helpful and thanks for watching!

Stuck at an Orielys 20 hours from home on a road trip when my alternator died and your video single handedly made replacing it so much easier. Thank you.
Glad to help!
thank you so much for the tip on how to get the alternator back in with the c-clamp trick. I am a 61 year old mom who was able to do it thanks to you. good job!!!
No problem! Glad to help
Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to show everything well, especially testing the diode, well done 👏
no problem, Glad it was helpful!
Dude. This is a most EXCELLENT video. As simple of a swap as this is, you covered every nuance and even were able to troubleshoot a bad reman part. Nice job! I love my 3rd Gen (on our second one now). Just subscribed and keep up the fine video and instruction work!
hey thanks! yeah I learned a lot from this. man the 3rd gen 4runners are great, the value of mine is way higher than when I bought it 7 years ago. it's crazy. thanks so much!
Thank you so much. You saved me and my 4runner!
No problem! Glad to hear
Great video with troubleshooting of wiring issue, And Alternator diode check, removal and install. I’m in the process of swapping out Alternators so that I can rebuild my original Japan Denso Toyota alternator. You can’t find original OEM anymore (stateside) all remanufactured. So I bought a cheepo just to get by till the original is ready to be reinstalled. I’m replacing both bearings, voltage regulator, etc. and cleaning thoroughly.
thank you! worked out great so I could show the alternator replacement. for sure, good luck! yeah oem stuff is drying up for these 3rd gen 4runners unfortunately. hopefully that works out in the meantime. I'm surprised my reman denso was bad right out of the box like this. makes me wonder if they actually test them. so far the replacement I have got has worked great.
Excellent video, thank you so much.
Thanks! Glad to help
Good mechanic... good explanation
Thanks 👍
Great video I just did my truck today had similar problem with connector corroded.
thanks! i'm curious as to what caused it in the first place, if it happens again ill investigate further
helped a lot thanks
glad to help!
The most informative video I found yet as I'm working with this problem. I'm trying to figure out why the wire melted for high resistance. Can you give me any advice on what I should check and then follow this video through to completion ? Thanks so much in advance
thanks! which wire are you talking about? are you talking about the burnt pin on the connector?
@@4WheelKid the wire coming out of the alternator that has the grayish cap going to the battery terminal. Thank you so much for replying so fast shiiii
Hey loved the video! Would you happen to know what size C-Clamp that was that you used? 2 inch, 3 inch or 4 inch? What size works the best?
I can't remember to be honest, bigger the better because it takes some force but also there is not a ton of room in there
Smart kid
Thanks
Very cool vid!! What volt meter are you using and where did you tap the wires on? I have a blown clock and wanted to throw a volt meter in there.
Thank you!
thanks! just a cheap one from ebay, hot glued behind the lens, I just used the switched power and ground from the clock after I gutted it. even used the original pins from the clock so the factory harness just plugs in if I remember right
The plug on my 4Runner looks the same as yours and has black around the hot batt terminal. I also get a lower voltage idling in gear, and the truck has a heavy electrical load... Which i think is normal for the truck and maybe i never noticed it.
Would you do this repair in hindsight if your alternator was still functional?
With your new alternator pigtail and new alternator, do you still receive a low voltage at idle in gear?
Thanks for the video and insight!
Yeah it seems to be pretty normal that the voltage drops when under heavy electrical load while in drive stopped while idling, its like the idle speed needs to be raised ever so slightly or the alternator pulley just needs to be a hair smaller. No problem will be interesting to see if that connector burns again
at any time you had low voltage dips did the battery light on the dash come on?
It did not on mine, apparently the voltage dips seem to be normal the idle speed needs to be raised slightly
What were the symptoms that you were experiencing that led to you initially changing the alternator? We're you getting an intermittent battery light?
Just low voltage, under load when in drive stopped, it was normal though cause the alternator just isnt turning fast enough. Wish I could put just a slightly smaller pully on the alternator
What is the original voltage supposed to be with the stock Denso?
Probably 14 something not sure exactly
Hey @4WheelKid just looking for an update How long did this alternator last you?
Still works great to this day
@@4WheelKid I just replaced my alternator with a bosh one it seems to be working good hopefully it’ll last, appreciate the video it helped me a lot.
how she holding up? just ordered a new denso alternator from rock auto on my 98 gen 3 runner
Great so far that first one was just a dud
@@4WheelKid mine comes in today, do you suggest i test the diodes before install?
Hopefully this is my problem with my 99 4runner. My interior lights go dim when i turn off the car. Im tired of missing work just because it doesnt turn on some days and even with a jump it wont turn on sometimes
could also be your battery connections as well. it's also fairly normal for your lights to dim when you shut the engine off because the voltage goes from like 14.2 to 12.5. I had to replace my starter a few years ago also. when you try and start it but nothing happens try going back and forth between start and run a few times. if it randomly starts after a few tries. your starter solenoid has burned contacts. and a new starter will fix that problem. pretty common on these 4runners
It also could be one of the 2 wires that connect to the starter are corroded. This also can cause intermittent starting.
Do you think that bad connector can short or fry your alternator
Im not sure to be honest
From top to bottom of harness is it yellow white red
thanks
How did you get your voltage on your clock ?
The clock was dead so I pulled it out and removed the lens. Then hot glued a cheap voltage display from eBay to the lens, already had a switched power and ground wire so I tapped it into that. Have a clock on my aftermarket head unit so it worked out great
