Founded in 2014, Truman is often compared with the beloved boot institution Viberg for its solid construction and thick, sturdy soles. At well over $500 a pair, it may take some convincing for a lot of guys to buy, but the boot has some tricks up its sleeve.
** TRUMAN IS ONE OF MY 5 BEST BOOTS FOR FALL - CHECK OUT THE REST! • THE 5 BEST MEN'S BOOTS... **
    FIRST GLANCE
A tank of a boot, the most eye catching aspects are the thick, waxy roughout leather and the chunky Commando sole. These are shoes built for taking a beating and while they won’t be at home in the office, they can be worn with a t-shirt, which is a little rare with boots.
Quality control wise, the boots are a little asymmetrical - the welt stitching is much closer together on the left boot than the right - but they still feel crazy solid and they’re the kind of shoes you immediately want to abuse. (In a good way.)
    LEATHER
An exclusive color from Horween, this is a roughout leather, meaning it has the inside of the hide on the outside. (If you think about leather like a loaf of bread, most shoes have the crust on the outside but this has the bread.) It’s a bit easier to take care of than regular hide leather, plus it’s covered with a super waxy finish that will help keep it resistant to the elements.
    LEATHER CARE
Truman recommends Bickmore’s Bick 4 Leather Conditioner or Smith’s Leather Balm for taking care of these. Avoid petroleum products and try not to let too much salt get on the leather.
The wax will eventually wear away, maybe after years, maybe after one horrible winter. A good cobbler may be able to reapply it but even if he can’t, there are other ways to keep the boot resistant to the elements.
** Compare with Viberg in my review! • REVIEW: Is the Viberg ... **
    SOLE
This is a big, chunky Commando sole from Vibram, so it’s insanely durable and grippy with the downside being that it’s not all that formal.
After the outsole there’s a leather midsole and a leather insole, plus there’s a steel shank for stability. A sole like this with leather on leather is common in boots for people who work on their feet all day, and should mold nicely to your foot’s shape over time.
The stitchdown welt is no Goodyear welt so it’s a bit harder to resole, but the sole is so thick and durable you probably won’t have to think about that for a long time.
    FIT & SIZING
These are available from 5.5 to 14 right now in B, D, and EE widths. They fit more or less true to size; I got an 11.5 and it fit fine, though the counter is very big and thick and wide, so my heel slipped more than I liked.
** VIBERG VS ALDEN - SEE THE BOOT BATTLE HERE • FIGHT! Viberg Vs. Alde... **
    COST
Right now they’re $440 a pair on Truman’s site and I can’t find them any cheaper anywhere else
    PROS
    Cheaper than Viberg
    Will age very well
    Exclusive color from Horween
    Very tough, grippy sole
    Solid construction
    CONS
    Giant counter
    Not dressy/versatile
Takes a month to be made
    Not symmetrical
A bit harder to resole than Goodyear welt

Thinks change/things stay the same. Truman has dropped the price of these boots to $480 and relocated their manufacturing to Eugene, OR since your review They have also changed the shank from fiberglass to steel, and have now gone to a GoodYear welt. I have a pair made in 2022 and QC is better than my Redwings, but not as good as Viberg or Grant Stone. The lasts used now are the 79 or you can get a 20 last if you have a wider foot. I'm a D width in most boots and these are extremely comfortable with about the same arch support as my 2030 Vibergs and Redwings. I really like the niche that Truman has created for themselves, slotting right in between Redwing Heritage line and the higher price PNW brands. I'm a fan! I love the Java Waxed Flesh so much, that I've also ordered a pair of their Coach Ramblers!

You should consider reviewing another pair of Trumans. Since moving to Eugene, quality seems to be way up. I just got a pair and they seem flawless. They're also goodyear welted now instead of stitchdown.

@@timfok18 Not sure. It doesn't make for easier construction; pretty similar to the difficulty of stitch-down. But you can in theory get more re-soles out of a single pair (2-4 as opposed to 1-2).

Hi, I love your reviews. I have heard waxed rough-out leather was used to stop absorption of poison gas in the war. It had the benefit of being more comfortable with the smooth leather making contact with the foot. I had a pair of rough-out french 'ranger' boots. I used dubbin, a light rub of a beeswax candle and heat to re-wax.

I bought two pair when they were in Penn. Still wearing both. Waxy Kudu/Dainite sole is my summer work boot and the Coyote Rough Out/Commando sole is my winter. Both boots have a couple years at least of sole left. I'm probably going to get the Dainite sole on my summer boot redone with a softer more cement friendly sole when the time comes. The fit was perfect from day one with really no break in.

I had the opposite experience with comfort and sizing. I had no issues at all with the heels. The boot did take shape after a week and a half. I sized down a half a size as usual with heritage style boots and it fits perfect. I did get the 20 last boots, so maybe that is why. But just wanted to give my experience. They are a bit more tougher to break in, but nothing as brutal as red wings iron ranger boots. I wore them laced on the lose side and gradually laced them tighter and tighter until i could laced them tight the way I like them (1 1/2 week later).

I had a pair of heavy weight all leather mountaineering boots for almost 30 years. The boot maker advised Sno-Seal be applied for water resistance and consequently my feet never got wet. Turns out it was a waxed flesh leather that was used and I never realized that until recently when researching my purchase of boots from JR. I’ve since talked with Horween and for my new boots they advised very little care initially. Eventually applying a waxed base conditioner like Obenauf’s HD LP, Huberds shoe grease or Sno-Seal, but no oils as you mentioned

Just personal preference.)

Great boots, if you can get them in a size that fits! If you are like most people and your left and right feet are different sizes, then this may be a challenge. It was for me. I am an 8D on my left foot and a 7.5E on the right. Truman recommended that I go with their 7.5D and, in reality, it is probably the closest fit for me, but it's is not a good fit. I really needed a 7.5E, but they don't make boots in an E width. I would have had to jump to a EE, which would be way too wide for my D left foot. I'm left hoping that the 7.5 D will stretch enough to become comfortable. So far, it's not looking good. I'll be looking into a pair of Nick's Americana next to see if I can get a better fit with their boots.

How long had you had those boots when you made this video, Nick? Crazy how you were able to just squeeze the structured toe box down. You sure they weren't unstructured toe caps? If you had only had them for a few weeks by that point then Truman had to have been using some of the worst celastic they could find because that didn't seem right. Disappointing about the arch support too. I'm surprised they still made your top five boots list, even for being the toughest. At least when you consider Whites or Nicks - similar price points and both build their boots (work and heritage) like tanks but with stellar arch support. Not to mention legit structured toe boxes.

The heel was not made for this last. The back part is not shaped right. If there is no lining it is not a good boot The reviewer mentioned arch support there is non. The boot does not fit you. After wearing a laced boot for 1 to 2 weeks the opening where you lace them should come closer so the holds your feet. The material used is excellent. Workmanship I have no comment since I have not seen how they produce the boot. The stitchdown is good but they probably forgot one operation that would make it better.

If you are paying $500 for a boot, they should come custom-fit to your foot. I can't really argue up the $150+ more for one of these over a Red Wing or something.
