Dayton is a Canadian boot company with a cult following among a lot of boot aficionados for their old school aesthetic and old world way of crafting their footwear. These shoes have been handmade the same way since 1946 and while it results in a pretty pricy shoe, many feel the cost is well worth it.
    ** First Glance **
Modeled after a classic Canadian military design, these boots have a classic, uncomplicated aesthetic that lets the leather and the construction speak for themselves.
I went with the brown pull up leather, which has oily streaks of varying shades of brown and black and while that sounds like it shouldn’t work, it does. The leather is super thick and tough but the unusual color palette make for a boot that’s both eye catching and masculine, which is the kind of fashion that a lot of guys covet.
There are seven pairs of eyelets, a Vibram composite rubber outsole, and a 270-degree Goodyear welt. I also love the way the tan welt contrasts with the leather - again, they’re beautiful without looking like they’re trying to be.
    ** Dayton Boot Leather **
These shoes are available in nineteen different leathers, everything form cordovan to purple hatch grain to yellow oil tanned and more.
The brown pull up leather comes from either Horween or Seidel, both beloved U.S. tanneries that often make lists of the best on Earth.
This is tier 1, 6.5-ounce, full grain leather. It’s oil tanned, so it doesn’t have quite the same lustre of something with elements of chrome tanning but the good news is it’s very tough, easy to take care of, and doesn’t scratch easily.
** Dayton Boots Leather Care **
Pretty simple: Dayton makes OK Oil, which is all they recommend. A mixture of paraffin, beeswax, and other oils, it should do a good job of conditioning the leather and enhancing the boots’ overall water resistance.
They advise against using conditioners with silicone, polish, or animal fats. This is pretty interesting because Red Wing strongly suggests mink oil on their oil tanned leather, but Dayton says animal fat will clog the pores.
SEE THE RED WING IRON RANGER REVIEW HERE: • Red Wing Iron Rangers ...
** Dayton Service Boot Sole **
The heel is Cat’s Paw and the rest is one of Vibram’s combinations of lug and nitrile, similar if not identical to the sole of Chippewa’s Service Boot. The sole has phenomenal traction; it just doesn’t slip.
After the outsole the boot has a leather midsole, cork filler, a leather insole, and a steel shank.
Lastly it has a 270-degree Goodyear welt, which makes it easy to resole and will extend the boot’s lifespan for a long time.
COMPARE WITH CHIPPEWA’S SERVICE BOOT HERE: • Review: Should Chippew...
    ** Dayton Fit & Sizing **
These are custom made boots: any width, any size between 3 and 15. When you order, they ask you to send in a tracing of your foot and the measurements of your heel, instep, and ball to get the best fit possible.
The break in was the worst I’ve ever experienced; I could only wear them for a couple of hours at a time for the first couple of weeks. To be fair, I didn’t send in my measurements, I just gave them a basic idea. But they told me that tough break ins aren’t uncommon with these shoes at all, so be ready.
    ** Dayton Boots Price **
You’re looking at between $480 and $530 for a pair of these. They took about 4 weeks to be made and sent to me from the time I made the order.
That’s not cheap, but they have a lifetime warranty against defects and they’ll probably last you more than ten years.
Think it’s too much? Use my discount code for 10% off! 815ER0G7KF8K

Little bit of trivia, Viberg’s 2030 last is based off Dayton’s service boot last. Founder Ed Viberg traded some leather hides for the last. He also traded a work boot pattern with Bill Danner for their hiker pattern.

Great review. I am a fan of Allen Edmonds boots. They probably are not as rugged, but they are extremely comfortable and require almost no break-in. They are also in about the same price range and cheaper on sale.

Went to the shop on East Hastings and tried on the new boots. Was unable to fit any of the new boots because of my long instep. The guy says hold on and goes into the back. Comes back with an old pair of black riding boots that had been brought in for repairs. Had a fully rebuilt sole and he said he would sell them to me for the cost of the repairs $25!! . Back in the day the new ones were $200 I believe. The size 12's I got I wore for 6 months or so until I grew out of them. Also remember one guy from back home had a tire tread sole on his Dayton's. Pretty nice old school boot company from the East End of Vancity B.C.! Time to visit the showroom again and see about their service boots. Thank you for the review.

Thanks for the review, just got my pair this week and absolutely love them! The break in has been surprisingly easy. I heeded Stridewise’s warning and sent in my measurements. I then went back and forth with Dayton numerous times to make sure we got it right. They were super helpful and friendly. Though it took a very long time to get the boots (due in large part to sizing and holiday season) the incredible customer care, attentiveness, and customization are well worth it. To top it off the boots feel rugged yet very high quality, and look totally badass. Thanks Stridewise for pointing me in the direction of these incredible boots!

Great to see you do a review on a non American-made boot. I have many pairs of Red Wings but a pair of Daytons is on my bucket list. Also I'm from Vancouver, where Dayton originates, so I'm probably a little biased, but Daytons are basically the holy grail of boots. If you know, then you know.

I have two pairs of the steel toe service boots I use for work boots. They are amazing work boots; over 5 years old now and are just as good as the day they were finally broken in. I had my foot measured in the store, and the break in was still pretty hard. My dad has also been wearing these as work boots since the 70's too.

I bought a pair of Dayton biker boots 15 yrs ago , squared off toe, brass eyelets , steel shank
gorgeous chrome tanned black leather, I still dont know if theyre properly broken in , they are frikkin stiff. They were 400 canadian so looks like my investment paid off they are way more now. I dont wear them much cuz it takes so long to put them on. and off. At one time in Vancouver certain bars wouldnt let you in with them on because they are a formidable weapon , one of these to the knee and game over.

I own a pair of these. One of the best boots I’ve owned, and I’ve owned pretty much everything. They’re up there with Wesco, Viberg, Nick’s, and White’s in terms of quality and durability. A definite step up from Red Wing or Chippewa. Their “parade” boot is also a bit dressier, but for me this is maybe the nicest service boot there is-the silhouette is the perfect sweet spot aesthetically.

Stridewise , they’re great. I buy a lot of boots on the used market (eBay and Grailed), and they don’t show up often, but quality and build wise they’re up there with the best, and the shape is not as clunky as some of the others. I also like, as you point out here, that they’re understated in a good way.

Wow! So many boots I Know nothing about. Thanks for taking the time to put together this video. Quite interesting and informative. Just curious Nick. How would you compare these boots to a Thursday Boot or an Allen Edmond Higgins Mill? Keep up the good work.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 років тому

These are a million times tougher, leather much thicker, boots more outdoorsy. Higgins Mill is a real nice boot and pretty versatile, slightly slimmer and dressier. Thursday boots are typically more dressy, like right half way between a work boot and a dress boot. So you could argue they're more versatile. Leather a bit thinner.

They’re quite true about mink oil! It will clog a shoe up and make it unshinable. I am at a military college and mink oil is selled here and it will do that, it never properly absorbs into shoes of thinner leather. I’d recommend huberds shoe oil/grease instead and depending upon your needs

The single greatest boot, ideal last shape, materials, butter comfort, looks, versatility, overall boot is the Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill. Its the perfect boot. More comfortable and stylish than the Thursday, more useful and multi-faceted than the redwing or 1K mile, perfect sole, speed eyelets which any 6" boot must have or you'll need a shoehorn to get them on, just a truly perfect boot. You can get them on sale for $320 if you look around and are willing to wait......I own them all, over ten pair of quality boots, the AE is your best buy if you can only get one. Half size down from your sneaker size and within two weeks, you'll have a pair of socks that you can go anywhere with!!! To me, this boot only has looks going for it. Another great review......

I have to agree! I own several pairs and AEHM is my ultimate favorite. Chromexcel, true danite sole, just the right amount of comfort, I like non-cap toes a little more. In fact, I’m wearing mine right now! They really feel like they’re built to last too. But I would recommend trying the less expensive alternatives like Thursday as they offer tons of value and are half the price of the AE.

Roughdraft214 the Thursday is ok but it’s not a heirloom piece. I have the Thursday in captains dark olive suede. Cool boot, but just a boot. When I wear my seasoned Higgins, I get looks.....I also put on my Higgins on one foot and my Thursday on the other and walked around for an hour. No comparison. The Higgins and I are one. I feel the Thursday last is a whisker to narrow. My next boot will be a matte or waxed black dress boot. I like the formal ness of a dressier boot with the distressed character of the open grain. What will we talk about in the summer?

Great review of some overlooked, underrated boots! Question: If you had to choose between these and the White's MP that you reviewed last month, which would you choose? I ask b/c I'm coincidentally trying to decide between a pair of lightly used Dayton Service boots in pull-up leather vs a lightly used pair of White's MP boots in waxed flesh. If you could only pick one, which would you pick?

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 років тому

Ooooh. I prefer White's just because of the way they fit, plus they're a tad more streamlined so a tad more versatile. I prefer Dayton's leather but White's has a ton of different leathers to choose from anyway. Dayton is cheaper though and they can make it to your measurements. That's a really tough one! If you have a regular foot then White's, if you have an unusual foot that needs unusual measurements I'd say Dayton.

Stridewise I went with your recommendation and picked up the White’s MP. I own a pair of Vibergs, and feel like the White’s May exceed Viberg in quality. They are incredibly overbuilt, every single part of the boot seems reinforced by extra stitching and/or an extra layer of thick leather, the welt is very heavy duty, and you were not kidding about the arch support. The high arch support makes these feel completely different from any other boot I’ve ever owned. I’m a huge fan of White’s.

Love that color. I have the same in my Nick's Falcons, it's Horween's orange predator. I know, it doesn't look orange, but it's a light tan with heavy oils added making it a very dark brown/tan/orange color. My Nick's are also 6.5oz and yes, very stout leather indeed and it's been a journey breaking them in. Great review BTW.

You may be right, an older picture on Dayton's FB page tags the brown pullup as Horween Predator #93. I think Nick may have gotten lucky and got one of the last pairs Dayton is making with the Horween Predator (IMO as I like the darker color), because I've been in touch with them lately and they've said they've recently changed to a lighter-color Seidel pullup leather which can easily be darkened via conditioning.
