My Allens in Rust Waxy just arrived and fit perfectly (I ordered size 9 for my normally sized 9.5 feet). I really love your explanations and I feel great about my purchase!
I have a pair of Meermin boots made out of CF Stead "Unicorn" leather, which is a batch of European Elk, tanned in the 1970s and rediscovered in a store room as crust leather and dyed/waxed recently. It looks VERY similar to this leather so this is probably the Unicorn leather. As far as conditioning is concerned I tried to use Neatsfoot oil but the dry leather just gobbled it up before it could spread over the surface. So I'd agree that using a cream based conditioner that sits on the surface allowing you to spread the conditioner.. Personally, I like the leather a little less dry with a little bit of shine at the toes.
