Truman Boot Review in Java Waxed Flesh!!

  • In this video I talk about my two year old Truman Boots in Java Waxed Flesh and heavily discuss my experiences with the leather. This is definitely one of Truman Boot Co's most popular leathers and it's been offered since Truman began their operation. At the time of this video, it's still available as MTO on the website. To better descrive the leather, I compare the Java Waxed Flesh to my Alden “Roy” Boots in Reverse Tobacco chamois purchased from Context Clothing. Enjoy!

    I like the color contrast between the tongue and the upper leather of the those boots. I ended up with White's Boots, the MP Service boot model. They're OK, they run large though.

    I recently had a pair of bespoke Paul Bond boots built for me for work that have what they call a waxed French calf for the vamps. It's meant to be the most durable for working cowboys, but I wasn't sure how to care for this leather, if it required much maintenance at all. My search has lead me here, and to my knowledge, I think these are probably very similar materials. Sort of a waxed rough out, except that instead of a wax being applied over the flesh side once the boot is complete, I think the wax is actually burnished into the leather during the finishing process of the hide itself, hence why that leather is smooth, despite appearances. Beautiful boots, by the by.

      Half a size down from your normal boot size? This is the worst part about buying boots online. It’s also hard to tell if they fit properly until you break them in. I just bought some Oak Streets, wore them for a week and now need to sell them because they are way too big. 🤦🏼‍♂️

    I do that same stretching technique without the alcohol or wetting process, still works. I had to do it with a a Carmina Rain lasted loafer, way too tight, but thick wool socks around the house for a few hours did the trick.

    A few years back they had a number of kudu leather boots that were so awesome. Couldn't spring the $500 for a pair however as my DD was attending U of Colorado at the time. I kick myself for not visiting Truman when I went to boulder. Will have to stop in next time I drive to Portland and go thru Eugene.
    Oh and nice clock in the background. I bet you would enjoy a Jeagger Atmo. Look them up.

    That leather looks tough as shit. I'm to much of a puss to be hard on my nice boots, i thought as time passed i would be less worried about them. I have been collecting for a year now and I'm to scared to ware them out most of the time. And when i do i baby them.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  6 років тому +1

      I can definitely sympathize with that!! it wasn't until fairly recently that I decided to really start beating the crap out of certain pairs, and I do so very selectively! basically I have to be on the verge of selling them but instead make the conscious decision that I could put them to good use outside of my normal rotation. I also have a pair of red wing moc toes that I use strictly for dirty yard work haha

    How similar or different is this leather versus waxy commander from CF stead?

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  3 роки тому +1

      you know they're the same in many ways, especially in the hand feel! however, the waxy commander seems to me to be more struck through in terms of pigmentation whereas the waxed flesh from horween has more of a teacore effect in that once you wear through the outer layer it reveals the natural, undyed layers beneath.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  5 років тому

      Actually that’s normal and I’ve noticed that on some of my other trumans! I think it’s just an effect of how they stitch the upper onto the sole, that little flap just sort of protrudes out a bit. Nothing I’m too concerned with 👌👍😁

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  6 років тому +1

      my favorite overall would be the Alden shoe trees! however, when it comes to shoe trees I usually just go with what's cheapest, as I've found the quality of the cedar is pretty much the same wherever you go. I've purchased a lot from men's warehouse when they do the buy 1 get 1 free sale, bringing the price to $10 a pair. alden shoe trees are expensive, but I always ask for them to include a pair when I buy a pair of aldens at the store. I have j crew and clark's shoe trees as well, they're pretty good too.

      hey man! thanks! I have tried iron rangers and 1000 mile boots and despite Truman advising to size up a half from those brands, I actually find them to run the same size. I would ask, how do those brands fit you? If they're snug/tight, maybe go up a half size. but if they're fine/ generous, I would probably do your red wing/ wolverine size

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  4 роки тому

      YOUNG MC yes I’ve long wondered why truman recommends sizing the way that they do. They say to go up half from Alden and Viberg but I say that’s true ONLY if your Alden’s/ Vibergs are snug. I wear my boots already with a generous fit, and because of this when going up a half size; sometimes I’ve found their boots to run too large because of the structured toe box

    • @hashmaker
      @hashmaker 4 роки тому +1

      @@youngmc5040 I just picked up some coach ramblers. The Truman rep recommended going with the same size as my IRs and 1000 mile which is what I did. To me they fit just about the same. The last is different, but they fit perfectly. The ramblers are unstructured and the Javas are structure toe I believe, not sure how much of a difference that would make.

    Bought a pair of Scuff-offs from Truman. They looked great when i got them. Unfortunately, pretty quickly, most all of the dye came off, and now what’s left is the basic leather that was under the dye... now they just look like cheap fake leather boots. I've had a few issues myself but ultimately I overlook them because I love supporting American-made, and the leathers that Truman does keeps changing and it's really interesting to follow them and see what they'll do next.
