White’s is often mentioned in the same breath as really high end boots like Viberg and Alden, and they have a dedicated following online - for this price, they need one. Do they hold up?
FOR FULL REVIEW + PICTURES, GOOGLE: STRIDEWISE WHITES BOOTS
    ** First Glance **
These boots really transport you to a simpler time in men’s footwear. Reminiscent of the Civil War-era during which the company was founded, these shoes are much less blocky than your classic Iron Ranger toecapped workboots. Instead they’re relatively sleek, but with the kind of thick leather and Goodyear welt that remind you they can really take a beating outdoors.
3-WAY BOOT BATTLE: ALDEN VS ALLEN EDMONDS VS GRANT STONE • Alden vs Allen Edmonds...
    ** Leather **
It’s available in a bunch of different Chromexcels but I decided to go with what might be their signature leather for this boot, the Cinnamon Waxed Flesh. It’s quite mottled but that’s not because it’s roughout, it’s actually a regular full grain leather that’s been hit with a super, super waxy finish. It shimmers in the light, smells like a candle, and imparts real weather resistance.

    ** Leather Care **
White's suggests cleaning it with Saddle Soap or, failing that, a wet rag. For conditioning they sell their own products: use their preservative to best protect it against mildew and saly, while their oil is more of a conditioner that will soften the leather. Don't condition them more than once a month.
    ** Sole **
The outsole is Dainite, a widely adored medium density rubber that offers a good compromise of durability, flexibility, traction, and softness. After that there’s a leather midsole, leather insole, and a leather shank.
The boot is hand handmade, hand sewn, hand lasted, hand welted, and hand bottomed. It’s meant to be as easy to resole as any Goodyear welt.

    ** Fit & Sizing **
Available in B, C, D, and EE widths, these shoes fit phenomentally well. They have a design that they call Arch Ease Support that’s meant to duplicate the natural shape of the foot. Everyone’s foot is different but in my opinion, they absolutely knocked it out of the park. The arch support is great, the instep feels great, it feels like they were custom made for my foot.
I ordered a half size smaller than my true to size.
    ** Price **
These cost $560 a pair, but if you don’t like the toecap the plain toe boot is about $530 a pair. Note that I waited 5 weeks for my pair to arrive, though you may have a shorter wait time.
    ** White’s Boots Pros and Cons **
    White's Boots Pros
    • Super comfortable
    • Quite versatile
    • Tough leather
    • Water resistant
    • Great quality control
    White's Boots Cons
    • A little pricy
    • Long order time
    • Folds along laces
    • 270-degree welt
    • No speed hooks

Nick , One of the big things with Whites custom boot's is that they are 100% rebuildable and are a life time purchase. If you send them back to the factory they will rebuild them for you using your original measurements. I have a pair of smoke jumpers that have been completely rebuilt 4 times and still fit my feet perfectly.

I gave plasma for two months in order to earn enough to buy these boots (my wife and I agreed that money from our full-time jobs goes to our general budget, but any money I make from selling my body is mine to spend on what I like). They arrived 8 weeks after I ordered them. I got them in natural CXL, a toe cap, and Dainite.
The CXL is twice as thick as that on my natural CXL Allen Edmonds Stirlings. The MP Service Boot is by far the best boot I've ever owned and was worth my blood money. XD

I got my first pair of White’s MP Sherman sometime in September and can honestly say it’s all thanks to your review. I love my Alden 405 but the MP Sherman is hands down the most comfortable and supportive boots I own yet. Great review! For people who have never owned a pair of White's, it's almost impossible to understand the quality and craftsmanship. The arc support and durability is virtually unmatched imo. Because of the fit, for me, prefer to wear a pair of my Truman's, but never disappointed when I lace up the White's!

You’re the first person talking about handmade shoes and boots to mention cleaning with saddle soap. I have used that on all my shoes, boots and saddles and other tack since I was a child. I think the best conditioner is Lexol which is a great product and won’t discolor leather. It’s very inexpensive compared to some of the ‘boutique’ conditioners. All of my tack stayed in great condition and was never bothered by horse sweat or rain. I’m looking for a pair of MTO boots for myself. It’s not quite as easy for women as for a man. Nice video. 👍☮️🌞🌟🥾

There is a large variety of different versions of that boot. Mine have half soul Vibram’s and speed hooks in the brown chrome excel with the toe cap but you can get them without the toe cap and different heel counters and they provide leather laces and waxed flat cotton laces. They are a long boot so you would have to size down one whole size probably because I wear a 10 on the Branick scale but purchased a nine and considered an 8 1/2. They are long!

  • @amanasd26

The fit and break-in period etc. are really comes down to the individual foot shape. I bought a pair of White’s MP 6 months ago and have to say it isn’t that comfortable, still touching my foot. I then ordered a pair of Viberg 2030 services boot couple weeks ago and it has been really good to me, especially the support from the leather insole. Viberg is better than White’s in the detail too.

    • @Stridewise

Looks like Viberg's service boot has a real competitor now with a better price point. I use White's bounty Hunters for work and the cost really pays for itself in the long run. I've worked and walked a ton of miles in mine and only now need a resole/heel after 3 years.

Let me tell you those guys beat the living hell out of those boots. The landfill was some of the harshest conditions you will find for a boot. Acidic, caustic, lots of sharp objects, freezing conditions, ... and both brands lasted far longer than cheaper brands. Crap that was bought at like Walmart or the boots shops down in The Dalles didn't last. Maybe 20% as long. Not sure how the MPs would have lasted however.

The Iron Rangers are great entry-level heritage boots. Mine are well-broken in and feel like a new pair of moccasins at this point. The support they provide is minimal. The ankle support is non-existent due to the hilariously oversized shaft. Unless you literally have no arches, there is no support. I am forever skeptical about the speed hooks now because their's bends way too easy. I wish I knew what I was doing, but I was having to bend one back every 1-2 weeks. That said, they are comfortable. Mine didn't take long to break in. What finally caused me to look for another brand is that their footbed is just way too slick. With significant amount of walking, they would slip rather easily.
Where White's shine is the stuff you can't see. You get a great arch support and my foot stays locked in throughout the day. Biggest issue is that I've broken two pair of their waxed laces. Only shoe/boot laces I have ever broken. You do have the option of hooks or eyelets unlike the IR.
I got my Whites in Chromexcel. Time will tell about their durability. From what I see, they scratch too easy and they get some significant creases very early into wear. I think they're better suited for the occasional wearer and not the heavy wearer (unless you're after that well-worn look). Red Wing's leather seems to hold up much better (though it scuffs easily) after some serious use, they started getting the creases that took a couple weeks of moderate use in the chromexcel.

      @Stridewise  5 років тому +1

Great comment. Yeah the Iron Rangers don't have great support or shock absorption, certainly not compared to Whites. I like the way you phrased it - they really lock you in. I'm not the biggest fan of Chromexce for boots you plan to beat up, in that regard I really prefer oil tanned leather like the Iron Rangers.

Could you have gone a smaller size in the IR's Rusty?
Coming from Australia I don't get to try on in-store often but I was able to with my IR's so I went with the tightest ones I could fit into 9.5 - I have 10 in Thursday Captains, 10.5 in Higgins Mill, 10 in Trickers so it was quite a squeeze but I took a chance and figured I could always wear thin socks if they don't stretch.
Well they did stretch and are now super comfortable and feel very supported and locked in with thick socks.
I really like these Whites, the photos on the website don't do them justice compared to Nick's excellent review.

Any suggestions on a waxy conditioner that doesn’t darken the leather as much? Would like to restore them to the original appearance or as close to that.

Saddle soap might not be the best idea to use more than once or twice a year unless you really need it. It does dry the leather a lot. Lexol or Bick 4 might be plenty on these 2-3x a year if you don't wear them all the time. Old wet t-shirt is plenty.

@@Stridewise yeah, all the manufacturers recommend it. But after building up quite a collection myself and making mistakes with too much cleaning and too much conditioning, I really do think that these types of boots are much, much tougher than we care to think. Not long ago they weren't a luxury item, and if anything modern construction methods have gotten better than they ever were, especially for established bootmakers.

No , the friction between the threads and the sole will hold them together.

  • @botany500kojak
    @botany500kojak 4 роки тому

Looking at the stitching in the outer sole, it is not set back into a groove (forget the term cobblers use). As a result you can see some of the thread fraying from use.
How do people prevent this and protect the thread?
I guess when you'd get them resoled, the replacement could have the groove.

I think the Merchant is more popular (it's been around longer), but the Williston is advertised to offer more - a higher quality build. Its supposed to have more cushion in the heal and the outsole is different. Additionally, it seems to be more versatile - jeans will work and so will chinos or a suit. The merchant strikes me as a more casual boot, whereas the Williston seems to be more of a dress boot. My vote is the Williston. But hey, you have an audience to which you're trying to appeal.
