The demo disco I remember fondly is that one that had Parappa The Rapper, Jet Motto 2, Armored Core, Tomb Raider 2. Colony Wars and Fighting Force were also on there but hidden. I used to have a subscription to The Official PlayStation Magazine and I used to look forward to getting those demos every month.
That demo disc is probably more responsible for people knowing the first song in Parappa the Rapper than actual copies of that game. Kick, punch, it's all in the mind!
Only Game Sack can take a topic like demo disc and make it entertaining but the best part is my favourite youtube show is now WEEKLY! What an incredible time to be alive!!
Game Sack Dave Oh no, now I have to double my nachos and soda budget! But seriously, thanks so much for making it weekly - I watched your panels and now I know how much time it takes to make these videos.
kniferaffe I don't know if I'd call it "amazing", but it's definitely better than people think... it's such a twisted mix of kiddie fare and totally inappropriate jokes... I still laugh at the "baton" death march... if you know history, you'll know how inappropriately wonderful that joke is.
I swear to god I used to spend more time on the free magazine demo discs than half of the games I had! Classic example is Virtual On for the Saturn! I spent so much time playing the demo back in the day but a few months ago I finally bought my own copy of the full game......... I haven't played it yet .__. Another is Tekken 3. Played the hell out of it to the point where when I finally got the chance to play it in the arcade for the first time ever, I flew through it on a single credit. Clearly I had no life back then.... Oh, sorry correction - I have no life.
Game Sack Dave if you count us PC folks... I think I played the 'day one' demo of Half Life more then I played the entire copy of HL2. PC demo discs are an interesting animal unto themselves, though.
I *loved* the demo disc era-- especially from 1996 on. PlayStation Underground (eventually Official PlayStation Magazine) demo discs were often packed with content, much like Joe showed off with the Jampack disc. Cheats, memory card downloads, and behind-the-scenes features complemented the playable demos well. Demo discs really took off during Gen6, though. All of the consoles had them, and three of the four had steady releases of demo discs thanks to Official Magazines. I still have quite a few of the Official PlayStation Magazine demo discs for the PS2, and the DVD format allowed for even more stuff to be packed in. In addition, demos for individual games were much more common; God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Rogue Galaxy, Burnout Revenge, Total Overdose, and a few others remain in my possession. Demo discs are relics of a long-since-passed age. Internet connectivity has made demo discs all but pointless, which is unfortunate since directly downloading demos means that the creation of extra features that used to come on demo discs is no longer necessary. Heck, even demos themselves are becoming more uncommon. Finally-- and I know it's been mentioned in the comments, but the import demo that Joe played here wound up being Irritating Stick here in the US. I bought that game back in 1999 and still own & play it today. No need to pay for an import on this one; it's cheap to own and the quirkiness will be off-putting to many. Guilty pleasure game for me. Congrats on the expansion to weekly episodes. I understand that it requires more work, but it's really nice to know that I can look forward to seeing new Game Sack episodes more often.
This was a great idea for an episode guys! My earliest experience with demo discs were with 3.5" floppies and CDs for DOS. You could call a lot of publishers up and ask for a free demo disk, and they'd send them to you. Didn't even have to pay shipping! And yes, Joe. You DO need to talk about those Dreamcast games some more. The world will be a better place for it. :)
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the original Xbox demo disk that had the first level of Ninja Gaiden on it. I must have beat it a thousand times!
I've played the Saints row 1 demo disc which has a out of demo bounds glitch where you jump out of your car through a demo wall and you can free roam out of map.
Great episode! One of my favorite channels at the moment. You always have topics that barely anybody else talks about. I hope there will be a part two about demo discs because I think there are a lot more demo discs out there worthy to be talked about.
The 5 demo discs from the Dreamcast Magazine I got before they went under were the most played discs in that system. Got more time and fun out of those things than any other game!
This might be my favorite episode of Game Sack yet. Hardly anyone talks about demo discs, but man, they were a huge part of my childhood. It was like, get a full-price game and maybe hate it and not get another one for months and months, or get a demo disc every couple of weeks and have a huge variety of games to try out. Plus it was really fun seeing how much you could push out of a demo!
Been saving my viewing of this episode and today I woke up mildly hungover, made myself another drink, and sat down to watch it. And did I just hear you guys are weekly?! All things flow according to the will of the great spirit.
OMG, just seeing the Saturn guy in the thumbnail has me excited! I actually had the VHS back in the day... weird-ass marketing, but it sure worked! I sold every system and game I had (except my Game Gear) just so I could buy a Saturn!
The best demo disc to date is still Christmas NiGHTS, a gameplay demo which has its own holiday themed plotline and plenty of unlockable extras (including the ability to play Sonic the Hedgehog who fights Eggman as the stage boss) and different modes for other holidays in addition to Christmas.
EatWave too true! when i saw that on the newstand of Fred Meyer winter of 8th grade, i clutched it so tight and just stood there for a moment astonished ... what a find! 5 bucks for a magazine with a wonderful game ... lovely memories! 😻
I just wanted to take a moment and tell you how much I love your videos! I've been on a Game Sack marathon the last week and have been watching all day! Keep up the great work!
***** came here to say this. That music on the menu screen as well, was dope. I remember one of the Net Yaroze games called Pandora's Box where you're trapped in a maze and have to move boxes around, and another game where you were a dog collecting bones or something. official playstation magazine UK was £5 well spent every month, for that disc
I love their stony delivery and cold impersonal faces when they talk at the camera, which makes sense since in their minds as they're talking to an inanimate camera... but then they realise they're also technically talking to each other... so, they look toward at each, not, always at each other, but toward... sometimes with a hint of warmth in their eyes... then back at the camera. It's beautiful.
As a kid, I played Tomba over and over and over on my demo disc, but I never found a copy of the game until about a year ago. Its funny how as kids we got such enjoyment out of game demos since we only got new games to play every once in a great while. Now I have hundreds of games and am well on my way to owning every game I would ever want to play.
Xbox Exhibition Vol 2. demo disk has the full Japanese version of Capcom v SNK 2 EO, with all characters unlocked and all endings. I couldn't believe that they allowed that through, I actually ended up getting a full version of a Street Fighter game for only $4.99.
The Playstation One's demo disk one was pretty cool, the one with a giant T-Rex and a Manta. Rey. You could only move the camera and change the Rex expression but it gave a good first impression on the system, with ambiance music and light effects. Sony should do a PS4 remake for time sake. Christmas Night is an AMAZING demo disk ! Filled with exlusive characters, mini games and secret contents. Also I had a saturn demo disc with more than 100 games, don't remember from which magazine it came.
Olivier Drevet I got this demo cd with my PSX back then, the T-rex was very cool. I also liked the intro of soul blade,Overboard and the first level of Lifeforce Tenka.
Olivier Drevet I remember that disc. It was called Demo1 and was packaged with every new PS1. I remember it had an intro movie, I felt like it was designed to introduce the console library to the new Playstation customer. It had Abe's Oddysee in it, as well as a dark trance-ey menu. I also remember, sometime later, getting a demo disc from a friend, who had gotten it from a magazine…it had the first E3 trailer for Silent Hill on it (the first one!!!)
Great to hear you guys are weekly now! As it happens with other forms of art appreciating video-games improves the more you know about them. Game Sack surely makes me appreciate my games a lot more!
This was a very interesting episode! I can remember the times I spent with the PlayStation "Demo One" disc that had Tekken 2 on it. You could only play as Lei and Jun for two stages in the arcade mode, but it was mindblowing for me and I loved it. Thanks for the nostalgia trip guys! Hope going to weekly episodes doesn't burn you out. Don't feel pressured to keep this up if it starts to be a struggle for you. Can't wait for more episdoes and thanks again for providing great videos on the video game world! :D
Soccer Kid and Marko's Magic Football it's the same case of Wonder Boy and Adventure Island, the creator took the same concept to another company and changed it a litte bit.
Game Sack congrats on doing an episode a week. your show is straight up crack rocks. i gotta have it in my life. lol. game sack representing to the fullest. keep it up, homies
VIDEOGAMEPLUS Wonder Boy and Adventure Island are basically the exact same game. Marko's Magic Football and Soccer Kid are very similar but not the same. Concept from both games are from the same guy though.
Here's a few I think are worth noting: GamePro Action Disc 1 - I've used this disc for years to play PS1 imports on my PS2. Works like a charm. There's no other reason to really have it, but that's enough for me. Titan AE - It's a demo disc for a cancelled game. That's pretty interesting. Official PlayStation Magazine 13 - Play Metal Gear Solid in Japanese with English subtitles. The English dub was incredible, no doubt, but this is still pretty cool. I still go through my OPSM demo discs every now and then and find games I've long forgotten about and then purchase them years after the fact - most recent example being playing OPSM 10 and then remembering that I needed to pick up Granstream Saga.
Amount of times i have bought a games magazine for what i think is a playable demo only to be a trailer is mad. Demo discs that really stuck out in my mind was the psone with that t rex graphics demo ...another one which had tekken 3 and the saturn one which had panzer dragoon zwei on it
I seriously didn't know what to expect when I clicked on this video, it turned out to be one of my favorite Game Sack episodes so far! I'm super stoked to see you weekly! By the way, I loved the Dreamcast part the most.
I always look forward to game sack you guys are so professional in your presentation thank you both for taking the trouble to present what is probably the best console game show on UA-cam
Did you know that there was a really bad 3D Prince of Persia before Sands of Time? Just wondering because it seemed like you thought SoT was the first one.
One thing I didn't see mention in this video was when you got demos of games on a cd you bought of a full game. Example. In the 90's when you got simcity for the PC (the one with all the human actors) if you looked on the files of the cd, you also got demos for 4 games. A lord of the rings game, a lost Vikings game and 2 other ones that I cannot, for the life of me, remember what they were.
jamcalx I think during a system's lifespan only a few of these CDs were made (I didn't dabble with demo discs), but have you looked under the demos section of the 3DS and Xbox? The 360 has quite the collection (unless they took them down some time after I left that console).
I love collecting old demo discs! I have plenty of examples of really cool trailers that don't exist outside that demo disc, games that have major differences between the demo and the final release, and some demos for games that were never released.
Congratulations on going weekly! I always looked forward to the lunch hour when I can eat in the office and watch the new episode, and now it looks like I have something to look forward to every Monday lunch. Keep up the good work Game Sack.
@@tetrisdave It takes a while to get used to the controls but its a much better game when you have a better understanding of how to play. on one stage you run around on top of spinning helicopter blades killing enemies. That's true Contra game play.
I need to share a wonderful/horrible story about the Lunar demo disc mentioned here. This demo is the reason a good friend of mine never beat, and will never again play lunar. As mentioned, you can save the demo and continue the normal game, so that's what all my friends did. Well, one of them wanted to make more space for items on Alex, and decided to move the flute to the flying cat for safe keeping. (this flute is unmovable on the actual game, NOT SO on the DEMO) moved right on over, and continued through the whole game. Once he reached the end, about the same time as the rest of us, the game wouldn't do anything once he got to lunar, it would just stay there locked up. After speaking with the rest of us, and finding out what is supposed to happen, we looked into his game, and found the issue, the flute is STILL on the flying cat/dragon, and per the game mechanics, is still UNMOVABLE. My friend still has this save, right before lunar, with a flute on a cat, and NO WAY to BEAT THE GAME ... we still pick on him for this 15 yrs later.
Hey guys thank you for this episode! You guys are both seriously awesome - Been watching Game Sack for quite a long time now and I'm loving these recent episodes, I know this probably wont mean much since you guys have ample fans telling you the same thing; but I understand that it's not easy to make a show of this length and magnitude consistently so I applaud you both and wish you guys all the best. I'll be watching - and thanks again for all of this entertainment you give us for free.
I liked the AMIGA coverdisks. In fact there is a site dedicated to archeiving all those AMIGA Demo Disks with scans of the actual mags too from years ago.
Oh wow, another Game Sack so soon. I actually collect (have the full set) of Japanese Saturn Super and Saturn Family discs. Some really cool stuff on them with later ones feature MPEG card compatible videos of Dreamcast stuff such as tech Demos and games.
Just wondering how many of us are here without having known Joe and Dave were going weekly. I for one was just getting starting to get anxious at the thought of waiting 2 more weeks when I come across this little gem!
Game Sack every week? Huzzah! The most memorable demo discs for me were from the UK "Official PlayStation Magazine" for both the PS1 and 2. They used to come free with every issue and I always had a blast playing all kinds of demos, some of which convincing enough for us to get the full games, like "Dynasty Warriors" and "The Simpsons: Hit & Run".
This was a great idea for an episode! There is a volume of Playstation Underground that has Ore no Ryouri in the imports section, a really fun game based around cooking and various other tasks in a busy restaurant. I still put that demo in occasionally cause the game is so fun. Glad to see the show is weekly now, you guys rule.
Love your guys' show. Look forward to it every Sunday. You guys rock. I always regret being too young and poor to miss out on the Sega Saturn so it is cool to see a lot of footage from Panzer Dragoon, etc.
Bibbidy Bobbidy I don't even remember that game. Maybe it was one Dave talked about. But we'd hope you watch because you like the show, not because whether we've seen Small Soldiers or not. But something you absolutely need to learn is that people have different opinions from yours. They do not all need to conform to what your opinions are. The sooner you realize this the less hung up you'll be about things like Small Soldiers and Rally Cross 2.
I remember that our PlayStation came with "Demo1" disc. It had bunch demos, like Bust-a-Groove, Crash Bandicoot 3. Gran Turismo, Medievil, Kula World, Spyro, Tekken 3, Tombi and Tomb Raider 3. It also had trailers of Spice World and one kickass Metal Gear Solid trailer, that ended up with detonating C4 of almost whole game area. Then there was demo discs, that came with PlayStation magazine. I always was kinda scared of them, because they had trippy looking menus. I get chills for even remembering then.
I fondly remember begging my mum to get me a few UK Playstation magazines just so I could play the demo discs that they came with. The demo discs we had over here would also occasionally contain small games made by independent developers on the Net Yaroze PS1, most of them were clearly test software, but some of the games made on it were actually a lot of fun despite how simple some of them were.
Max Steel was a childrens TV show, but Great Episode! I love this channel and been subscribed for a while now. I just had to give you all props for all the work you've done over the years.
Oh, the Official Dreamcast Magazine discs. My uncle had the Dreamcast and he'd get the magazine every week, and my cousin and I would play the hell out of the Skies of Arcadia demo once we discovered it. We beat it so many times that I lost count eventually. I'm surprised we didn't scratch the disc. I don't usually comment though I watch every single video, but this topic brought back a lot of memories so I just had to. Love the show, guys, keep up the good work!
Thanks guys! I liked the vid a lot. I like how you picked a subject different from everyone else (I haven't seen any on youtube with this subject) so way to go!!!
The official Sega Saturn magazine gave away the entire first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga on the front of their May 1998 magazine. Without a doubt that was the most impressive demo I've ever played. By the time the game was released I was already hooked on the strange but enthralling story. I also got the Christmas Nights disc from Toys 'R' Us, but sadly my disc got damaged and stopped working. This video was interesting, because almost all the demo disks I had access to were magazine cover discs. I wasn't aware of the pre-order discs you have collected. This was an interesting idea for a video. Nice job. :)
I don't remember Demo disc so much, but I do remember back in the day Maximum PC would include a CD with every issues of their magazine jam packed with free programs, and some PC games(sometimes full versions), and I always enjoyed those Disc.
I'm so glad you made this video. Demo discs were a part of the video game culture and experience and I'm glad you dedicated an episode to them. To me they're on par, give or take, with video game magazines, which was another favorite episode of mine. And as a final note, I actually love the weird marketing campaign of the Sega Saturn. To me it's mid-90s from top to bottom. Early 90s were all about 'tude, and mid-to-late 90s were all about being weird and edgy. Yes in hindsight it's all corny and it all looks like it's trying too hard, but for reasons of nostalgia I love it. Thanks for another great episode, guys.
My sister and I collected so many ps1/ps2 demo disks when we were growing up. I still have them in a CD case somewhere. Our dad used to bring home a bunch of random games and demos for us in the early 2000's. I remember being introduced to some of my favourite games like Parappa the Rapper, Dark Cloud and Crash Bandicoot through demos.
Holy cow! Your Dreamcast capture footage looks amazing! Gotta love the Dreamcast outputting in 480p VGA. It still looks crisp every time I turn it on and play that system. Great to hear you guys are weekly.
I remember spending what seemed like hours standing at Sears and Toys R Us game kiosks playing every demo that I could (that was not a video). I remember them moving through the systems from the 16 to 32 bit eras... with the aging snes holding on with Stunt Race FX and the Genesis showing Comix Zone... and the PS1 and Sat with Need for Speed and Fighters Megamix... I also remember the CDI on display... oh god.... I am becoming a random memory spouting old man. HOWEVER, I did buy the game Blast Chamber recently after having played it fifteen years ago on a PS1 demo disk...
If Christmas Nights counts as a demo disc, that is by far my favorite! Got it back when Ultra GP was still around in Christmas of '97. That was such a cool thing to have and really made you feel that Sega cared about you. Nothing can touch the memories of those days, *sniff*. I also loved the other sega sampler discs for the sega saturn, the first of which had a playable demo of Sega Rally Championship. What a mindblow it was to see those silky 30 fps and weather effects. Sega Screams which came out in '97 was awesome too, with playable demos of 3 Dirty Dwarves and Bug Too!. The dreamcast demos are great as well, they covered so much gaming ground. I have some other demos like Shadow of the Colossus, but haven't gotten very far in it yet. You two did great, even though it was clear this was a out-of-the-blue kind of idea that you don't have a lot of in your collections. I'm sure you will have many generous people to ship you some of theirs (want an SSX demo?)!
Cap661 I think Christmas Nights would count. I believe it came free with IGN magazine back in the day so yeah. We don't have a lot of demos and would gladly accept them for another episode. If you want to send us that SSX demo we would appreciate it very much. Thanks!
@Game Sack Not sure if it counts, but I have very fond memories of Christmas Nights into Dreams. I remember seeing a glorious Sega Saturn kiosk at Sears playing that Demo, and being blown away at the sensational graphics being shown off.
I've got a CD wallet FILLED with Demo Discs from OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) back in the day, about 40 or so or maybe more. I remember some of these having FANTASTIC features and demos, some demos for games that were never actually released for the Xbox (like The Red Star for example)
The first thing i think about when i think demo disc is the MGS2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders for PS2. I spent allot more time on that demo than what i did with Z.o.E. My favorite demo experience however wasn't the original Z.O.E. MGS2 demo, but 6 months later. MGS2 had already released in America, but was still 6 months away in Europe. A 2nd demo came out, but this time in a PS2 magazine. First thing i noticed was that it was now in English rather than Japanese. However what really blew my mind is that the demo no longer ended after you defeated Olga. You could actually get all the way to the end of the engine room in this demo before it ended. This meant i had an extended demo to help make the wait for the full game a little bit more bearable.
I pretty much kept all of my demo discs. I don't have many from the PSX days but started to read a lot of PC Gamer and PC Accelerator magazines in the late 90's, I never even had a PC until 2001 so it was torture to not be able to play them. When I finally got my first PC I installed the demos like crazy for weeks on end and had a blast going through them even though they were 2-4 years old. Late in 1999 I got a Dreamcast and started buying every Dreamcast magazine for the demos and all the browsers to finally have some kind of home internet access, a bit later Quake 3 Arena came out for the system and I played my first real online game (besides Chu Chu Rocket). Fun times, great memories, and those demo discs kept my broke ass sane when I had no real games to play.
The PlayStation Demo Disc One also had a cool gimmick for controlling a Mantaray and a T-Rex. The latest revision has a ton of playable demos, well worth it!
Bushido Blade was such a neat title. At a time when fighting games were really flooding the market and most didn't have many departures from the established conventions, Bushido Blade was a truly unique experience.
Great episode! The only demo disc I wish you guys could have covered was Christmas Nights into Dreams. That demo was so unique that many fans of the series consider it to be a standalone game. I remember the entire appearance of the game changing depending on the time of year you put the disc in.
My favorite demo disk was a PSX Underground disk that came with a very very long demo of Legend of the Dragoon, I can't for the life of me find it now but I remember being amazed at how much they let you play of the game, easily a few hours and enough to have me go spend some allowance on the game itself.
I used to have SO MANY PS1 demos, mostly given to me by a former step-brother-in-law who had an awesome collection of games and demos. It was how I fell in love with several great games, Spyro and MediEvil being the two biggest I remember. My favorite demo disk I've ever had, though, would have to be one I have NO IDEA why i received. It was sent to me in the mail, and was for a PS2 game called Front Mission 4. At the time I didn't even have a PS2, nor was I subscribed to any gaming magazines or anything, but darn it I held onto that disk until I DID have a PS2, and when I did and finally played it, I absolutely loved the game inside. I've never tracked down a copy of the full game, but if I ever do, it's MINE. Not a demo disc, per se, but another demo I received in the mail and have no idea why (since I was never subscribed to anything that would net me such things) was a VHS demo for Banjo Kazooie. I must have watched that tape 30 times, and the Christmas after the game came out I spent every last bit of my holiday money to pick it up, as well as my first (and only, actually,) strategy guide. it's still one of my favorite games for the N64 to this day, though if I ever get another cartridge of it I'm going to do my best to find one of the 1.1 releases, since my original copy was a 1.0 with the notes that would regenerate every time you left a world, meaning you had to collect all 100 IN ONE GO for it to count.
I think this is a great idea for a video, the demo disc was a huge time in gaming because up until cd rom games, console gamers didn't ever really get demos. If you wanted a demo, it was shareware pc gaming on 3.5" floppy or renting carts from the video store. Since I was a Nintendo kid I went from nes to snes to n64. It wasn't until my little brother got xbox that I ever played one of these discs. That makes these even more interesting because they kinda show their age now. That Saturn disc! kids these days don't even know, with their downloadable demos and youtube, game devs don't bother to put together these type of discs with the cool extra content like this. I like it. And btw, I'm stoked to have a new episode already!
I loved demo discs. In the days of narrow internet bandwidth, they were the best ways to see and experience games before they were out. I was always excited to see a demo disc packed in with my PlayStation or PC Gamer magazines. One issue of PC Gamer featured a disc carrying a truckload of complete DOS games! Now we have Steam and online console services, and such previews can be streamed straight to your home. This is convenient, but it also kills that sense of "sneak peek" scarcity.
Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) sounds like jampack vol 2 , i love that disc . best $4.99 i ever spent
sumo8675309 Yeah, I think that was it.
I had that exact disc I probably played it more than some of my complete games lol.
That demo disc is probably more responsible for people knowing the first song in Parappa the Rapper than actual copies of that game.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind!
all those demos were also in the interactive cd vol. 5
Gladius is a huge hidden gem it's not as boring as you guys would think from the trailer it's actually really one of the best games from that era
HardcoreGamerDirk93 Came to comments for this, Gladius is a wonderful game.
Loved gladius on ps2
HardcoreGamerDirk93 had completly missed that game, must try it now :D
HardcoreGamerDirk93 I wanted Gladius so bad for years, and was never able to get a copy. Wow. This video just made me remember that. Hunting time!!
jokatech I have it on PS2, not sure if there is any difference between the two, might want to check.
Only Game Sack can take a topic like demo disc and make it entertaining but the best part is my favourite youtube show is now WEEKLY! What an incredible time to be alive!!
dada bubz LoL. Thanks!!!
Game Sack Dave No, thank you!
Game Sack Dave Oh no, now I have to double my nachos and soda budget!
But seriously, thanks so much for making it weekly - I watched your panels and now I know how much time it takes to make these videos.
Weekly Game Sack? That means I can ease the bummer of the weekend ending every week! Thanks guys! Your effort will be appreciated.
Game Sack Dave "League of Legends. Thanks!!!"
Dude, Small Soldiers is a FUCKING AMAZING movie. Seek that shit out, ASAP.
kniferaffe I don't know if I'd call it "amazing", but it's definitely better than people think... it's such a twisted mix of kiddie fare and totally inappropriate jokes... I still laugh at the "baton" death march... if you know history, you'll know how inappropriately wonderful that joke is.
kniferaffe Sadly, the internet hates Small Soldiers. As a young teen I loved it.
Such a 90s movies. Good for nostalgia though.
Toy Soldiers with Sean Astin and Lou Gosset Jr is better in my opinion
I swear to god I used to spend more time on the free magazine demo discs than half of the games I had! Classic example is Virtual On for the Saturn! I spent so much time playing the demo back in the day but a few months ago I finally bought my own copy of the full game......... I haven't played it yet .__.
Another is Tekken 3. Played the hell out of it to the point where when I finally got the chance to play it in the arcade for the first time ever, I flew through it on a single credit.
Clearly I had no life back then.... Oh, sorry correction - I have no life.
Veggie Gamer You're not alone my friend. There's more people out there like you then you know.
Game Sack Dave if you count us PC folks... I think I played the 'day one' demo of Half Life more then I played the entire copy of HL2. PC demo discs are an interesting animal unto themselves, though.
Aw man Small Soldier is a great movie by Gremlins'director Joe Dante ! Come On !
Also, when will we see an AMIGA episode ?
I never had any interest before in watching this movie, and recently watched almost by accident. It´s really a cool movie. Tottaly worth it.
I *loved* the demo disc era-- especially from 1996 on. PlayStation Underground (eventually Official PlayStation Magazine) demo discs were often packed with content, much like Joe showed off with the Jampack disc. Finally-- and I know it's been mentioned in the comments, but the import demo that Joe played here wound up being Irritating Stick here in the US.
Andrew Vrba Cool story about the floppies.
Game Sack Dave Allowance money only stretched so far, for everything else there was demos and shareware.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the original Xbox demo disk that had the first level of Ninja Gaiden on it. I must have beat it a thousand times!
I've played the Saints row 1 demo disc which has a out of demo bounds glitch where you jump out of your car through a demo wall and you can free roam out of map.
simp
Great episode! One of my favorite channels at the moment. You always have topics that barely anybody else talks about. I hope there will be a part two about demo discs because I think there are a lot more demo discs out there worthy to be talked about.
The 5 demo discs from the Dreamcast Magazine I got before they went under were the most played discs in that system. Got more time and fun out of those things than any other game!
Sega Swirl. I think they had it on two of them; it was meant to show off either Sega.net downloads or multiplayer. I played that one a lot.
The import game is known as "Irritating Stick" here in the USA.
I was just about to write that, but you beat me to it.
***** I have it. You NEED to play it with analog controls!
***** Did the U.S. release keep the crazy opening cinematic?
*****
English announcer or Japanese announcer?
*****
But the screaming in Japanese was the best part of the game. =\
***** Aww, why you gotta insult Kratos like that? :-P
Thank you so much Joe Game Sack and Dave Game Sack Dave for taking the time to dish out a video a week! Totally makes my Sundays that much better!
EatWave That was an awesome disc. I actually had to buy the Japanese one since I couldn't find the US one at the time.
I have a lot of fond memories of the PS1 demos we got in the UK... Good times indeed, loved the inclusion of home-brew net yaroze games...
***** Blitter Boy, damn that was great.
Demo 42 had a collection of net yaroze games on it
***** came here to say this.
The dancing dude at 6:45 reminds me of Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. :D
I thought the same thing! Probably intentional. Furry hats never did catch on!
I love the wide breadth of topics you guys cover.
I had the same Demo disk. Abe's Oddyssey was in it and i spend few hours playing the same stage over and over again
Olivier Drevet We had hours of fun lip synching and playing puppeteer with that T-Rex. So did everyone else who had that demo... don't even deny it.
Redrally I have a demo disc with that trailer too. Might be the same one.
Great to hear you guys are weekly now! As it happens with other forms of art appreciating video-games improves the more you know about them. Game Sack surely makes me appreciate my games a lot more!
I didn't even know there was demos on the GameCube
I love Demo discs! So happy you guys did a video on it. I think it is a lost art in today gaming world.
I loved the pizza hut ps1 demo discs....
VIDEOGAMEPLUS Interesting. Did not know that.
Game Sack congrats on doing an episode a week. your show is straight up crack rocks. i gotta have it in my life. lol. game sack representing to the fullest. keep it up, homies
Game Sack I guess i have to play Marko then, cause Soccer Kid was kinda fun.
VIDEOGAMEPLUS Wonder Boy and Adventure Island are basically the exact same game. Marko's Magic Football and Soccer Kid are very similar but not the same. Concept from both games are from the same guy though.
Ruudos I know that, it was just a way to point out what I meant.
Here's a few I think are worth noting:
GamePro Action Disc 1 - I've used this disc for years to play PS1 imports on my PS2.
Demo discs that really stuck out in my mind was the psone with that t rex graphics demo ...another one which had tekken 3 and the saturn one which had panzer dragoon zwei on it
Eastyy's blogspot Yeah the T-Rex demo. I also watched that stupid sting ray swim around with that soft music in the background fat to many times.
I seriously didn't know what to expect when I clicked on this video, it turned out to be one of my favorite Game Sack episodes so far! I'm super stoked to see you weekly! By the way, I loved the Dreamcast part the most.
Game sack. Completely legit.
Zaboru Yeah I didn't know that. What system was it on?
Game Sack Dave Dreamcast I think.
Game Sack Dave Yeah, Dreamcast and PC.
Game Sack No, this game is not for dreamcast (i think)
Zaboru I believe you are talking about Warrior Within, but it came one year later than SoT for Game Cube...
Demos... back companies cared about you trying a game and wanting get the full version. there are not enough demos anymore!
jamcalx lol yes there is what system do you own lol?
PSVITA, 3DS, 360
jamcalx I think during a system's lifespan only a few of these CDs were made (I didn't dabble with demo discs), but have you looked under the demos section of the 3DS and Xbox? The 360 has quite the collection (unless they took them down some time after I left that console).
jamcalx shut up satan
protocetid i looked and they took them down n xbox :(
I love collecting old demo discs! I have plenty of examples of really cool trailers that don't exist outside that demo disc, games that have major differences between the demo and the final release, and some demos for games that were never released.
I threw away all my demo disks before I discovered intelligence.
Eric W LoL. Then when we do discover intelligence we want to beat our pre intelligent person up.
Congratulations on going weekly! I always looked forward to the lunch hour when I can eat in the office and watch the new episode, and now it looks like I have something to look forward to every Monday lunch. Keep up the good work Game Sack.
Dave, give Neo Contra a chance! The full game is a lot of fun on co-op.
retro joe Maybe if I can get Joe in on it I will try it again. :)
@@tetrisdave It takes a while to get used to the controls but its a much better game when you have a better understanding of how to play. on one stage you run around on top of spinning helicopter blades killing enemies. That's true Contra game play.
This was one of the best episodes you guys have done so far. I've been interested getting into demo disk for awhile.
Lonewolfz24 Good story. That's a shame but after 15 years I would think he's ready to play through the game again. I would be....
Those Jampacks by themselves deserve a full episode, I collect them all and they kick ass! Loved them as a kid as well.
I remember winning a DonkeyKong64 Demo Cartridge at a Nintendo Event
Hey guys thank you for this episode! You guys are both seriously awesome - Been watching Game Sack for quite a long time now and I'm loving these recent episodes, I know this probably wont mean much since you guys have ample fans telling you the same thing; but I understand that it's not easy to make a show of this length and magnitude consistently so I applaud you both and wish you guys all the best. I'll be watching - and thanks again for all of this entertainment you give us for free.
I love the new schedule, you guys! Keep it up!
What? Dave being gone?:(:(:(
I liked the AMIGA coverdisks. In fact there is a site dedicated to archeiving all those AMIGA Demo Disks with scans of the actual mags too from years ago.
Huh my dad recommended you guys, im liking what im seeing. You guys earned a sub
+Icecl Keyheart Haha your dad is awesome! :)
+Icecl Keyheart Be prepared to find yourself binge watching, you'll find it happens before you realize it.
***** Yup been doing that xD
+Icecl Keyheart Hell yeah \,,/
Uh. How old are you?
Oh wow, another Game Sack so soon. I actually collect (have the full set) of Japanese Saturn Super and Saturn Family discs. Some really cool stuff on them with later ones feature MPEG card compatible videos of Dreamcast stuff such as tech Demos and games.
Game Sack has weekly episodes now? I think I creamed my pants
Demos used to be sick! They sometimes had exclusive content or were just a bit different then the full game
Wait, it's been two weeks already?
StillAtMyMoms Nope. Weekly now.
Game Sack huzzah
Game Sack Weekly is here to stay???
Doug Carr Yes!
Game Sack Yay
Just wondering how many of us are here without having known Joe and Dave were going weekly. I for one was just getting starting to get anxious at the thought of waiting 2 more weeks when I come across this little gem!
Maybe ya should do a beta and alpha builds episode
Game Sack every week? Huzzah!
The most memorable demo discs for me were from the UK "Official PlayStation Magazine" for both the PS1 and 2. They used to come free with every issue and I always had a blast playing all kinds of demos, some of which convincing enough for us to get the full games, like "Dynasty Warriors" and "The Simpsons: Hit & Run".
Obviously you guys have never played Bushido Blade it's a great game give it a go
DarkSpawn Bushido Blade kicks ass. I love the feeling of that perfect one slash kill.
I loved Bushido Blade. A very unique and fun game.
Gladius on of the most rewarding tactical rpg on the cube or xbox
delukard07 Maybe some day I'll try that one and keep it away from Dave. :P
Gladius is an absolutely fantastic game.
delukard07 Gladius and KOTOR on the Xbox really turned me back on to western rpgs. LucasArts rarely published terrible games.
delukard07 Yeah, Gladius is a great game. I like to play it. :)
i still have it on my xbox. finished it twice, good game
I hope you guys never run out of ideas! Your system episodes are fantastic! :D
How lame, you didn't even show any demo discs for the SNES or Genesis. :D
Maybe the Nintendo Playstation has some. ;)
Curtis Lee Cancino
thats because those games dont run on discs you idiot
Love your guys' show. Look forward to it every Sunday. You guys rock. I always regret being too young and poor to miss out on the Sega Saturn so it is cool to see a lot of footage from Panzer Dragoon, etc.
Never seen Small Soldiers and never will? You just lost a subscriber.
How petty.
+Game Sack How petty of you to talk so unfavorably of Rally Cross 2
Bibbidy Bobbidy
I don't even remember that game.
+Game Sack What a well thought out response! I am sure you must use it quite a bit.
+Bibbidy Bobbidy What is the matter?
21:51 been looking for this since i was YOUNGGGG and owned this disc!!! Thank you!! my mind is at peace
Keep up the awesome videos guys! As long as you produce them I'll watch them! Thank you
I hear you guys are doing a video every Sunday now. Neat! This video couldn't have been released at a more perfect time.
Irene Miguel Pastor Thanks and thanks for the comment.
Dave you pronounced Einhänder quite flawlessly! :)
And great that you going weekly again!
datamanmachine Thanks and yeah weekly will work fine. There's still time for the family.
Thanks guys! I liked the vid a lot. I like how you picked a subject different from everyone else (I haven't seen any on youtube with this subject) so way to go!!!
This is some good sack. Salty, sweaty, not too slippery. Good job boys!
Fantastic video guys! So pumped that these are coming out weekly now....finally have a reason to drag my ass out of bed Sunday morning!
glad to see my fave gaming youtube series back in weekly rotation 👍
YES! Now Game Sack is weekly!
Damn I miss having demo discs!
So great that you are weekly now!
Thanks!
@Game Sack
Not sure if it counts, but I have very fond memories of Christmas Nights into Dreams. I remember seeing a glorious Sega Saturn kiosk at Sears playing that Demo, and being blown away at the sensational graphics being shown off.
I love the ODCM Demos they really bring me back to 9-9-99.
OMG OMG OMG.....GAMESACK WEEKLY!!!!! I may have shit my pants right now but yay good job guys! Glad to see you guys growing! Keep up the good work
Bushido Blade was such a neat title.
Wouldn't mind a Demo Discs part 2, reminding me of a lot of games I forgot or never heard of.
Kevin Hibbard You speak the truth.
