I didn't get a Gamecube at launch, but a friend at the time did. He hooked it up first at my place, and I marveled at how many asteroids were on screen in Rogue Squadron II. My only other launch experience was with the Wii U: I got the first one in my town. New Super Mario Bros. U was just okay, but seeing Nintendo stuff in HD for the first time blew my mind.
I only had enough for 1 game at launch: Hydro Thunder.... And that was part of the faulty batch of launch games *sob*. It took 3 visits to the mall to get a working copy as they sold out and had to wait for a resupply. My 2nd game was Ready to Rumble. Wish I would've got more into Power Stone earlier.
I still have my T-Shirt. Launches are their own thing. This was my one and only; and I think it was great in spite of my rollercoaster of technical issues.
I actually got my Dreamcast a whole month before release date in Europe and besides Sonic Adventure I do not think it was that great at all. Both Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 3tb were running on Windows CE which resulted in poor performance. Soul Calibur was fantastic. Everyone of my friends - without exception - loved it and was able to play the game without having to learn moves first. The hard part was trying not to drool out of your mouth while looking at the visuals. I don't think Sould Calibur was a launch title for the system however, unless it got heavily delayed in pal territory.
The nintendo I was 5 it was 1985 and playing mario blew my mind. I still remember the commercial that came on and informing my mother that's what I wanted for Christmas.
power stone 1 was only 2 players. (unless there is something I'm missing.?) number 2 is 4 players. great episode and content. I'd love a sequel to this, with the Neo, snes, nes and etc.
Right behind Pokemon, Dreamcast was all the rage in my school when I was in the 4th and 5th grade when the system launched! Then it died after PS2 and NGC were announced!
The Dreamcast was the first system that I actually lusted over. It was such a massive step forward over the N64 and PS that it blew my 13 year old mind.
Dreamcast launch to this day is still the GOAT. It was the first time I crossed over to the other side and got a Sega system. It was also the first console I ever bought with my own money. TBH if it had launched in November 2020 I still would have bought it over the PS5 & Series X launches.
I recognized it because I had a TB16 back in the day and beat that effing game after soooo many hours. Suck it noobs...Naw...just kidding. Game and be happy. Thumbs up.
Every time i see clockwork knight gameplay i just want to go buy a saturn and play it. If i had one as a kid and got that game it probably would have blown my mind. I like the environments and the graphics style. Sure its the same pre rendered stuff we saw in dkc, but it looks great and fun.

I can excuse that tho cuz i love the content you guys create! I recommend all the "Works" series over on Parish's'Tube channel as well!

I remember my parents giving me their old Game Boy in the early 90s, and I was hooked on Tetris, Super Mario Land, and Solar Striker-all launch games for the system. I still enjoy them, and it might be my favorite system for launch games.

I just bought a Saturn late last year, never owned one before as I was down on Sega after they cancelled support for the 32x and Sega CD when I had just bought both. Anywho going back and playing the Saturn, after hearing forever that it's weaker than the PSX (which I did buy at launch) I must the Saturn is WAY more impressive than people give it credit for. It has a great library of original games and an awesome controller, I can't believe I didn't get a Saturn when they were blowing them out at the end.
@@drunkensailor112 Yeah, the graphics in general aren't muddy like they are on the Playstation - but the big thing is the games, there's just a lot more of them than I thought. Before I bought the Saturn I just never paid much attention to it so I didn't know what I was missing.
@@drunkensailor112 Oh, and I got one of those new official Sega Saturn controllers by Retro-bit and they're great. Highly recommend it if you're using the original US controllers or your old one is beat up, these things feel just like a new OEM controller.
I'll never forget that dreamcast launch. the world stood still for at least a few days or weeks in my recollection. so awesome. I remember showing it to my parents and they couldn't believe the graphics (my dad was a gamer as well)
+Tim Houston That's nice of him :) :b But seriously, at launch you don't have many games, and a year later (even earlier) the price goes down for the Console. So I think if someone can wait, there is no reason to loose so much money just to be one of first to be a owner of a new console.
Its funny, i was thinking not long back that you guys should make a episode on launch games, and you did! My favorite launch game has to be Super mario land. it was the game that started my love for portable systems.
My most memorable system launch happened earlier this year. The Nintendo Switch was the first time I picked up a system on it's midnight launch and it was entirely by accident. Some weeks before the night, I tried to reserve the system at GameStop but they had long since sold out. I did put $5 down on Super Bomberman R, though just in case. Fast forward to about 30 minutes before the launch. At this time, I didn't have enough money on me to buy a Switch and wouldn't until 8 AM the next day (long after the system was sold out) so I went to Wal-Mart with the intention of buying Zelda BotW for Wii U but I was told I had to wait with the people getting Switch systems. Due to most people going to the GameStop across the street for the console, there were only about six people ahead of me with two joining right behind me and the lady said there would be at least enough for the nine of us. Sweet... but I still didn't have enough for the system. But then I remembered something: I've been getting $50 gift cards from the people running my apartment complex to compensate for having the power out and being forced to live in a hotel for a few weeks and I just so happened to still have two untouched ones with me. When I asked the lady if I could split payment between the cards and cash and she said yes, my face lit up like Christmas. Moments later, I walked out of Wal-Mart with my very own Nintendp Switch console and, when I got paid later that day, I rushed over to Wal-Mart to pay off Super Bomberman R. It's a night I'll never forget and it was entirely unexpected.
You can't not love Engrish and you simply cannot not love Takenobu Mitsuyoshi happily belting out (with a great singing voice at that) "BRUU BRUU SKIIIIES... BRUU BRUU SKIIIES, I SEEE!". Also, am I the only one who thinks that the NPC guy at 28:14 looks like British comedian Michael McIntyre?
Great video guys! I actually found a Vigilante Arcade cab at my local Goodwill a couple of months ago for $10. Although not the best beat em up you can't beat $10!
+ProtosMerkabah you think ODST is the best of the Halo series? You are taking too many drugs. or not enough drugs. Either way, the amount if drugs is not right. it is garbage compared to Halo 1, 2 and 3. you obviously didn't play those if you think ODST is better.
ODST has a soundtrack/atmosphere/setting/story that blows the others out of the water though, and you never feel like some super soldier even on the regular difficulties
Love you guys. I hope we get another episode about this. I think a final games before death of a console might be cool with some great games releasing late. thanks for the show. you guys do great work thanks again
I don't think that's a space shuttle at 8:13. Since Tetris is has a Russian theme, this must be Buran spacecraft, which flew in 1988 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buran_%28spacecraft%29
I think the most memorable for me was the SNES in 1991. A kid down the street from me rented the famicom from a local video store before the SNES came out and we played the japanese Super Mario World for almost an entire weekend. I was so blown away, I just knew that I had to pester my parents to get it for me on my 12th birthday.
When it comes to launch systems I only buy Nintendo. Microsoft never had a good track record for having a quality launch system with missing options or reliability issues.
My 360 had the red ring of death 5 times. Xbox One, no problem. Both consoles were purchased at launch. But in Microsoft's defense, I would call and they would fix my 360 within a week to two.
Anyone remember the "recall" on the original Xbox? Yeah, the fires caused by the power source? Not to mention that it did NOT run many games well with the first Gen. Fable and ESIII GotY come to mind. I still have the 3rd Xbox Zero (since Xbox One is a different thing now) that we bought. Runs great and reliable.
Have you guys considered adding an overlay when playing games in 4:3 aspect ratio? It's a small touch but I think it would be a nice addition to your videos. Anyways, keep up the good work.
+Kempes SFA +Game Sack The overlay wouldn't be tacky if it were something simple like, the name of the system or the game. Also, adding 'scan lines' to games that were typically played on older TV/Monitors would be more representative of the 'look' as without, they look terrible. It's old school anti-aliasing.
The Mass Debator I don't like things on the sides. It's distracting. I mean, they don't put stuff above and underneath letterboxed movies, do they? Of course not. Also not all 4:3 games are the same width. It varies from game to game. Other channels can do that, I just think it looks amateur.
Harley Quinn i have beaten every single Zelda title up thru Twilight Princess. I am completely burnt out on the series. It will take more than a new Zelda game to get me to get this year 1.
SuperHns Well Daytona USA on the Saturn runs at 20 frames per second and plays like a dream. The later Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition runs at a solid 30 frames and doesn't control any better.
The frame rate is consistent and if the controller response isn't tied directly to the frame rate its very possible to have a game that controls well at less than 30 fps. FWIW I don't know if the controls or the physics are tied to the display frame rate in the case of Daytona, but either way its very playable. In fact some say that the cars in the original Daytona (Saturn) actually control better than in the Circuit Edition remake which has a better frame rate.
+Pickster UK Well, I guess I can't argue with facts. I guess it's like having a consistent frame rate but inconsistent frame times so the game still feels choppy. It just seemed like an odd thing to say when I watched the video.
I would agree with that. Master Chief collection gives more value for money if you are on the Xbox one anyway. Most feel the best in the line is the 2nd one. I like it to mostly due to the huge variation in locations. 5 screwed to much up to be "fun" as it gimped to much vs earlier titles on even the MP.
+Balc0ra's Gaming The story and level design in Halo 5 is very poor. Some like the MP but it doesn't feel like Halo to me. Halo 3 and Reach are definitely work playing still fantastic games.
MP was poor on the 5th one and I've hardly touched it. Reach is the best one there IMO. One of the reasons is that you can't play Firefight solo to name one. As you need 8 players to start it on 5. Reach I gained many a level having fun with firefight both solo and with friends.
+Balc0ra's Gaming Firefight on Halo 5 is more like a strike on Destiny but not well paced at all. I still play Reach Firefight it's really fun local coop and online.
My favorite launch memory is the Nintendo Wii. I didn't get many system on launch, but this one was not only the first that I did...but I waited in line 2 hours at Best Buy. Holding the new controller was such a new gaming experience I felt like a kid again. The three launch titles I bought were Call of Duty (the last military shooter I ever bought), Twilight Princess (Wii), and Madden '07. I don't buy Maddens every year...maybe every 4 years when I get a hinkering. This one is still among my favorites. I like the motion controls...gets you into it.
Got my GameCube at launch with 4 controllers, Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars Rogue Leader, and Super Monkey Ball. Each game was fantastic and my original Cube is still going strong!
Oh how I enjoyed Munch's Oddysee on the Xbox! I loved the characters, art style, voice acting and sound effects. The game had some real atmosphere to it. I didn't enjoy the repetitive collection part of the game so much. Using a crane to pick up and drop 50+ egg crates into a portal certainly felt like too much hard work. I hope it will be re-released on a modern system at some point, like I heard it might.
Blue Stinger is a must for guilty pleasures as it has over the top cheeky dialogue, weird Christmas music, and guns in vending machines. I wish there were really guns in vending machines.
At the end when you guys talk about waiting in line at the Gamecube Launch together, it kind of touched me and I thought it was a shame you didn't both sit closer together and each have an arm on the shoulder of the other friend when you said those things
Thank you for continuing to upload content. I know this can be not the most rewarding job at times but I truly do enjoy your content. I saw your DVDs at Too Many Games with Screenwave but I didn't have a lot of extra money at the time. I aim to try and support you guys at some point in the future. Thanks again for all the awesome videos!
Another great episode; yeah, a common complaint I've heard about the the TurboGrafx-16 launch was that they should've included a better pack-in game with the system.
Yup, Soul Calibur & Sonic Adventure are what sold me on the Dreamcast. I bought one at launch and absolutely LOVED it! I remember being totally shocked when they announced that it was being discontinued. To me it felt very sudden and unwarranted. I thought the system was great with a fantastic library of games. I simply couldn't understand why it was being cancelled or wasn't doing well. Such a shame as it's such an underrated system.
Blazing lazers is so good, I think it's the best Turbografx16 game. Thanks for this suggestion many episodes ago, I'm still playing this one (and rocking its music).
I really like this idea. Can't wait to see more of them. It would have been cool to compare launches based on generation, as in PSX vs Saturn vs N64. I also think a packaging/cart variants episode would be cool. Like PSX long boxes vs jewel cases or Genesis EA cartriges, NES Tengen cartridges, SNES slide-out vs lock-in carts, etc. Also, "the first [Wave Race] game on the N64." No, the first Wave Race game was on Game Boy, and it even sold enough to become a "Player's Choice" title. Don't feel bad, though. I didn't know it existed until after Wave Race 64 was out.
Legendary Axe, R-type and Blazing Laser my favorite launch game on Turbografx-16. Super Mario Land, Tetris, Alleyway and Tennis was my favorite launch game on Game Boy. Daytona USA was a great launch game on Saturn. And Luigi Mansion and Super Monkey Ball was my favorite launch game on Gamecube.
This channel's backlog is a life-saver. Feels like I'll never run out of episodes. Thanks!

It's a night I'll never forget and it was entirely unexpected.
Clockwork Knight is absolutely one of my favorite series!
Dave, Halo's 4 and 5 aren't even made by the same team as the original.
Bungie went on to make Destiny.
And if I may add to that... 4 & 5 are the weakest in the series. Maybe the Halo collection might ge a better purchase to jump back in.
Also go get ODST. I personally think that's the best one in the series.
+ProtosMerkabah you think ODST is the best of the Halo series? You are taking too many drugs. or not enough drugs. Either way, the amount if drugs is not right. it is garbage compared to Halo 1, 2 and 3. you obviously didn't play those if you think ODST is better.
+August West what is an opinion?
ODST has a soundtrack/atmosphere/setting/story that blows the others out of the water though, and you never feel like some super soldier even on the regular difficulties
I LOVED Panzer Dragoon! Even while playing, with the awesome soundtrack, it was like you were in a movie!!
Dreamcast. Soul Calibur.
Nothing more needs be said.
Uhhh halo nuff said
Eating lunch while watching your launch games episode. Thanks guys, you deliver quality as always!
Pack...in game?
What's that?
Mistah Bean A free game that comes packed in with the console. Like Super Mario World was the pack in game for SNES, when it launched.
We gotta make this a meme.
Stopped when ps1 came out i think
Love you guys. I hope we get another episode about this. I think a final games before death of a console might be cool with some great games releasing late.
thanks for the show. you guys do great work
thanks again
I agree. My first Xbox was refurbished and it broke only a couple years later.
Game Sack is the best video game channel out there! I always love your videos, guys.
Have you guys considered adding an overlay when playing games in 4:3 aspect ratio? It's a small touch but I think it would be a nice addition to your videos. Anyways, keep up the good work.
What do you mean? Like stuff on the sides? Nah, I think that looks pretty tacky unless done for effect on one or two shots.
Game Sack Disagree, I think it depends on what overlay you use. But anyway, it's no biggie, I come here mostly for your quality videos.
+Kempes SFA +Game Sack
The overlay wouldn't be tacky if it were something simple like, the name of the system or the game.
Also, adding 'scan lines' to games that were typically played on older TV/Monitors would be more representative of the 'look' as without, they look terrible. It's old school anti-aliasing.
The Mass Debator
I don't like things on the sides. It's distracting. I mean, they don't put stuff above and underneath letterboxed movies, do they? Of course not. Also not all 4:3 games are the same width. It varies from game to game. Other channels can do that, I just think it looks amateur.
Game Sack *"I don't like things on the sides"* - Ever seen Joe Dirt?
"It's not about YOU, it's about the CONSUMER!"
Heh.
Cool episode. The Dreamcast launch was my favorite, but then again the Dreamcast has been my all-time favorite console since it launched in 1999.
Nintendo Switch launch line up: Zelda and 1-2 Switch.
Pathetic
Harley Quinn i have beaten every single Zelda title up thru Twilight Princess. I am completely burnt out on the series. It will take more than a new Zelda game to get me to get this year 1.
@@vtrip_ Sooooo... How about that year 1?
I wouldn't want to live in a world without Game Sack.
How can frame rate not affect the gameplay! ? Just saying...
There are a lot of games where the controls stay tight and responsive even though the frame rate is low.
In a racing game having less than 30 fps will AFFECT gameplay. period.
It just seemed like an odd thing to say when I watched the video.
literally got the notification as i was mere seconds from sleep.... must stay up for the sack
Don't bother with Halo 5 it's terrible
Edmundo studios
Exactly. Local. That's the aspect they kinda missed out on as you can't start it with just 1 or 2 in a couch on Halo 5.
What about the dreamcast 2?......wait nvm
The fuck you smoking?
I don't know, in nam the soldiers got coke, maybe the kernels doin it 70's style.
+Marshall Perry *colonel dumbass
Brandon Foley I hate hashtags but, #thatsthejokedumbass
Marshall Perry I hate hashtags, but #that"joke"doesn'tmakeanygoddamnsenseyoudipshit
An EPIC episode. Can you guys make another one of these please?
Would love a Turbo Grafx 😔 Looks amazing❤️
Especially R-Type, I had the ZX Spectrum version growing up!!!
Got my GameCube at launch with 4 controllers, Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars Rogue Leader, and Super Monkey Ball. Each game was fantastic and my original Cube is still going strong!
Great episode. Brought back some good memories.
Thx again guys. Love a new Game Sack and a good cup of coffee ! Great episode !
Great episode guys, hope this topic gets some sequel episodes
I'm at work, and I find a new Game Sack episode? YEAH!!!!!! This will help the mundane graveyard shift I have to work tonight when it's on downtime.
Really enjoyed this video. Hopefully there will be a part 2.
Loved that episode guys, we want more !!!
Great video.I was also there for the Dreamcast launch.Minny Me was there for some reason.
What a great episode to watch. Really interesting.
Love the video at the end! I too had the "255 day edition!"
Thank You for watching!
You guys released a DVD? I thought there was only a Bluray.
Yeah I mean Bluray. I substitute DVD for Bluray sometimes when speaking.
Another great episode; yeah, a common complaint I've heard about the the TurboGrafx-16 launch was that they should've included a better pack-in game with the system.
"That's right, I know your friends are weak" haha that was a great line.
That Dreamcast line up is outstanding. Still one of the best launch games
Always great to see another Game Sack video!
I remember Bug! Played that a bunch as a kid...remember liking the game over screen
Dave's expression at the last second of the video is perfect.
wow, DoA3 looks really impressive for the time it came out.
Blazing lazers is so good, I think it's the best Turbografx16 game. Thanks for this suggestion many episodes ago, I'm still playing this one (and rocking its music).
these videos are cool its awesome to just see a couple seconds of a bunch of older games I never seen some of them look pretty trippy mannn
Im glad you're back to making videos regularly.
