That woman was hung for concealing a pregnancy and they had to change the sentencing to state "hung by the neck until dead" because the previous sentence was "hung by the neck." They have a bar named after her.

I have lived in Edinburgh for 5 years and have heard all these stories so many times but they always make me laugh, the locals love to tell them to tourists
As a medievalist getting her masters in European history on this stuff, yeah this is all very true. I would totally be down to have him do a dark history series. give it to me.

Fun fact, a lot of people survived the plague by drinking beer. People back then were dying from contaminated water, so people would drink beer because it was safe to drink. They didnt know they were cleaning the water by boiling it. Beer saved lives
And it had no lasting effect on the generations to follow.
Thats not how people survived the plague. That’s how people just generally survived.
Fun fact, a lot of teenagers get pregnant after drinking lots of beer. They didn't know they were making a mistake. Beer makes lives.

This is a great example of the inherent difference between British and American humour. The fact that Daniel sloss loves how dark his cities history is and Conan desperately wants to find the heroic silver lining

The best of anything gets laid a lot.
A lot of rich businessmen and celebrities who get plenty of ass play golf, so I get his was just making a joke but that kind of fell flat for me. Good jokes usually have a fragment of truth to them.
I loved his standup and now I love him personally he's pretty cute and the ACCENT

Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities 💜💜💜 Just got back from my second trip there. 🙂 It is honestly so lovely. Perfect mix of old and modern. So much to do and see all with beautiful scenery of hills, parks, and historic buildings/monuments.

I adore Edinburgh. It's my most favorite city that I've visited. Breathtakingly beautiful. Mary King's Close is pretty creepy to visit though.

You know what. I just had a weird thought. I kissed a boy I thought was adorable when he was 13, and I am so glad I did. He had a terrible accident and died at 14. It was tragic, but now I am glad he didn't die thinking he'd never been kissed.

I visited Edinburgh for the first time this summer and it turned out to be the only city on the British Isles I would like to visit again. Amazing place.

Sad to see that the American audience didn't get his humour. I find this dude hilarious eventhough I have no idea who he is lol. I love and revere the Scots! They are awesome people, great sense of humour and they have haggis which I have yet to try. :)

Conan's audience now is unfortunately largely younger millennials and gen z kids that missed out on the glory years of 90's Late Night where things were wild and absurd and not political at all. I 'm not trying to box in everyone in those generation spans, but so many seemingly are afraid to laugh at jokes that could be deemed weird or dark or controversial to anything besides opinions they currently hold or are bombarded with. It's sad to me.

I went to Edinbough this summer and like half the stuff I learned from my tour guide was dark history told in a very "yep this is us" sort of way. Kind of loved it. Every other thing, "oh this hill is actually a mass unmarked grave, bunch of protestants that were murdered by the catholics... we had a problem in the 90s with too much rain causing the ground water level to rise and body parts were coming out of the ground, locals kept taking them for keepsakes." Literally the only difference between the more mainstream daytime bus tour that then took us into the highlands and the after dark ghost tour was the tone of voice the tour guide had. Sloss would be loved as a tour guide there.

Have you ever talked to a Scottish person? They are so entrenched in and proud of their history. Kinda like asking if all Texans worked as tour guides for the Alamo, there is generally a very high interest in the population.
Yesss, I heard all these stories last year when we went to Edinborough, and more. So interesting! Also, the one with the witch, there are a lot of great guides over there.
