My fellow MB's, I need to vent for a minute because I know you people will sympathize with me. I'm upset. I'm only 22 years old but I have fallen down the bunghole of whiskey nerd-dom, in large part due to this channel and community. I'm across the country from my family for school, but my dad knows my love for whiskey and my exposure to this channel so he will often text me for whiskey recommendations, many of which I still have yet to try myself because that college student budget is not conducive to whiskey shenanigans, so I only have a drink when my parents are buying dinner (along with whiskey, I am learning the ways of the mooch). Last night I get bombarded with pictures of a whiskey bar's menu, so I give my dad some options I think he'll like based off of what we've both had in the past. He's had some Laphroig, some Lagavulin, some Highland Park, all of which he likes, so I encourage him to try the Ardbeg An Oa (again, I have yet to try it, but I've only heard good things). He follows my advice and orders a pour. This is how the conversation goes from there: Dad: "First sniff, smokey but has a nice caramel hint" Me: "Well that's a good start" Dad: ……"WOW! That is REALLY good! The finish is amazing! This was a good choice!" Me: … Dad: "Holy crap, you won't believe how good this is!" Me: … *silent tears* I continue to get texts that are RAVING about how good this whiskey is, and he must've been visibly having a mouth-gasm at dinner because now my mom is texting me on the side scolding me for how I've broken my father. I make no apologies……except to myself. I suffer at my own hand for recommending a whiskey I have lusted after for YEARS that I now have the "pleasure" of enjoying vicariously. My dad doesn't know the pain he's caused me with his joy, but I needed to get this off my chest. Thank you for listening, MB's
I feel your pain brother. Here is the silver lining. You are only 22 years old and have a lifetime of opportunity to indulge and enjoy you glorious bastard. Hit the books, get your career on track and enjoy the finer things life has to offer.
I REALLY like the glass on the bottle thing. Especially in a comparison like this. Being able to visually tell which glass you're talking about without having to put much thought into it makes this oh so much more enjoyable as well as easier to digest the information.
I’m a year into my whisky experience. A year ago, I wouldn’t have cared about an ABV above 50 (or even understood what it meant in relative terms). Now, it gets me excited.
Sometimes you don't even need that high of proof for a good complex bourbon. New Riff is a fantastic bourbon. Not a high rye, but it does have a nice sweet and spicy flavor. Haven't tried the single barrel but it's next.
So... I have been watching since you had about 5000 subs. I noticed something today that has been missing for awhile. The mooch of old, the guy who was buggin you to try more. To compare like whiskeys. To show off that you knew what is in the whiskey vault. To show it's true glory. I miss that..... awe, the good old days.
The cask strength was the only thing that helped a severe tooth ache I had, and I tried several whiskies off my shelf.. 750ml gone in 36hrs. Good stuff.
Great idea to put the glass on the bottle your talking about, you could also just put your hand on it. This makes it easier for me to follow which bottle your talking about.
Timing was good on this one for me, as I scored one several months back when Ohio had a limited release of these. Cracked mine open and tried it while watching the episode. Floral, rosy nose...check. Honey-cherry-chocolatey flavors (with some peppery spice)... check. All in all, as Rex said, nicer than I expected.
@Whiskey Vault Thanks for the review! Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! Also, Pop’s Wine and Spirits is is Suwanee, GA just north of Atlanta! Cheers!🥃
thanks guys, my local store just got it in so I might grab one. Fyi, yes, Pop's is in NY (Oceanside). Used to shop there often when I lived in Long Island. Great store. Cheers.
Bulleit is my "go to" when i do winter punch for when i'm going icefishing. Bulleit - dry apple cider - a cinnamon stick - vanilla sugar. Heat up (not boil), put in a thermos. Go fish.
You can find the bottling date code on Bulleit by looking for a laser etched code on the bottle. It is usually just below the label on the front of the bottle. There is an L followed by a 4 digit Julian date code. The first number is the year (e.g. 2018=8, 2019=9, 2020=0, etc.) and the following 3 digits are the day.
That's awesome! A handle I bought I'm 2017 had a leading 6, makes sense. A bottle I got on clearance at a grocery in 2019 lead with a 7 - also makes sense!
This was a good one. Casual, good stuff. Never cared about the Bulleit too much though. Could You make a shootout on 100 proof or higher bourbons? 10 most reasonable (accessible, quintessential...) or something.
Bulleit was my first real bourbon. What an experience. At first I wasn't a fan of the smell, but I had bought large bottle, so I had time to get acquainted over the week, and now it's like a happy memory. Didn't get wasted, or anything but it's just a positive association. Gotta pick up more lol
(Places glass on top of target bottle) Okay, you’re on to something Daniel! Yes, keeping doing that. You created a whole new efficient communication technique for whiskey sommelier
If you guys are going to be indexing, I'd really appreciate knowing which episode it was that Rex first did his "Heinz the Baron Klaus Von Espy drinks Uigeadail" impression. (Or is it "Heinze ZE Baron Klaus Von Espy"?) I'd like to have that one handy to forward to people new to the channel.
Bulleit is a classic. It and Woodford Reserve got me back into whiskey. I am not ashamed to say I think I prefer American whiskey to classic Irish, although Irish whiskey is expanding.
Branding as there only is like three distilleries in Ireland. I'm half Irish and find Bourbon superior. Scotch is special as there is a lot of distilleries here in Scotland. More than anywhere else. Scotch is the finest by far but you need to like malt, smoke, sherry and cool crisp tastes which I find complex and overwhelming. Scotch is high end.
Many years ago (40) worked in a bottle factory. They aren't always just dated it can be dots somewhere identify the month and something elsewhere will be year. Numbers can just be the mould it was made in. And each factory can have it's own dating system. I used to be able to tell where and when beer bottles were made unfortunately that esoteric skill has now been lost.
I am working my way up the whiskey ladder but I still don't know where they get these "notes" from.. it's like they pull the descriptions outta thin air and try to make them stick.. I still love watching your videos because it gives me a new whiskey to try every week.. I still find myself crawling back to Elijah Craig and 1792 small batch.. they are so great.. and I am never buying scotch again because the 15 different bottles that I have bought and tried all taste like booze fermented in a cigarettes ash tray.. they all taste like dirt for some reason and I don't like them..
Whiskey on the bayou posted a vid recently on a diy nosing kit. Geared more for scotch, but concept would apply for bourbon as well. There are many notes I still am not experienced enough to pick out specifically. But I damn sure know when I've caught a whiff of something that's offensive to me, and I'm still trying to figure those out along the way.
I'm waiting for the finishing notes. Regular Bulleit has a great start but completely evaporates on the finish. It sounds like the single barrel has a much richer mid palate. So, what's the ending, is it a rich coda, a cadence and finale, a drifting conclusion into a minor key, or a maddening hard stop on a half cadence?
Woot, not only did I make it into the video but Rex said my name right (well the first time lol). And yep I started in on the newsletter and I am in the facebook group now. And if you guys keep playing the reverse cards I will drop my Wild Draw 4s. :)
Are some higher proof whiskeys exactly the same as a lower proof whiskey with less water added after coming out of the cask? Is wild turkey 101 exactly the same cask source as their 81 proof bottling, just diluted differently? If so, can you evaporate 20% of a standard whiskey and create your own ~100 proof version? Would it be as good? Would a food dehydrator be a way to do that? Rex and Daniel, challenge!
Grabbed a couple bottles of Bulleit that I had laying around here had a 36 and 59. Since it looks like it was molded into the glass I am seriously doubting that it going to be representing date codes at all, and more likely simple a mold number for the Owen Illinois bottle since the glass house marking that is on them.
Very new into my whiskey journey, have you or any of the MB's ever had any of the Cleveland Whiskey Co products? Enjoying the sugar Maple wood bottle now. Thanks.

The burn (from said bourbon) in my chest, lingers longer than I feel comfortable with…anyway, all of the above to say this, adding water to the bourbon made it taste like yuck, to me. The sacrifice I made to get those cute little accompanying cups!

Glass on top of the whiskey in question is the smartest thing either of you have ever done. Please continue.
I bought this one over the weekend, not my favorite bulleit but pretty solid, cask strength bulleit is my go to bourbon right now
Bulleit has its own distillery now in Shelbyville, KY. It was opened in 2017.
Pop’s from just outside of Atlanta! Great picks from there
Thank you, I have both of these bottles unopened and was going to do my own tasting. :)

Time to get into the Bulliet Barrel Strength! #5 was about 62.7% and amazing. #6 is 58ish% and still quite nice

Have you guys thought about reviewing seaweed & aeons 10 year old or scarabus 10? two Islay malts that seem interesting
The number on the bottom of the bottle may be to identify which mold the bottle was made in.
I concur. They certainly would not want to change the mold for each bottling...
I just bought my first Bourbon today which was this bullet bourbon is dam good and cheap 31$
Bulleitt is multiple sourced distillates. Supposedly 10 different distilleries including their own.
To maybe answer the date on the barrel question, I found a barely legible white marking on the face of my bottle that reads "082910".

you should do a video of your all-time favorite whiskey and scotches
I think it is more likely that Rex takes credit for Daniels good ideas long enough into the future that Daniel doesn't even know he did it first.

It seems that I will need to find myself some of that single barrel!
So if alcohol content is important, could a drop of PGA change the flavor profoundly like a drop of water? Maybe more so?
Agree. thier bottles are nice looking.
How often does a whiskey actually improve after water? I think Ive only seen it once or twice in the reviews.

Here’s a question for you MB’s!
I got some Jack Daniels for the first time this last month. Been enjoying whiskey seriously for about a year and a half now. Had quite a few.
And I tasted the Jack and immediately wondered: WHY IN THE HELL IN THIS POPULAR?
It tastes like absolutely nothing. I struggle to find a single noticeable note on the nose, and the pallet tastes like vodka that’s been in a barrel briefly.
Compared to the Jim Beam Black I’ve been enjoying, it’s basically water. What’s the big deal? Am I the only one that thinks this?
Ever notice how popular vodka is? Lots of people ('without taste' some might say😉) prefer things that have no taste.
