  • An interesting way to taste exactly what Tennessee-style charcoal filtering does to a classic MGP rye.
Big thanks to Brent Stanfield for the bottle. Cheers ya M.B.!

I am a major top gear fan for over 15 years. Yes I would say most people watch top gear for the entertainment and the same goes for car people because we don't want to be bored out of our minds listening to all the technical difficulties. Therefore your show is entertaining to whiskey lovers the same as top gear is entertaining to car lovers. PS I won't charge you for that

ON the topic of Top Gear. When the show first aired they did a lot more car reviews of average vehicles. As the show evolved over time, it became more about entertainment and spectacle and less about consumer advice. Top Gear has an online presence that does publish articles on car reviews for people who actually are more interested in the specs, price, practicality, and so on.

Dont you see the beauty & relevance in what your/he’s saying? the whiskey vault turned into the tribe & Daniel did in depth reviews, just like Jeremy Clarkson? I can honestly say that the whiskey is second to listening to the stories, education and shenanigans. I have learned a LOT. More than if I were to just sit and sip a whiskey and read their web page. I have been able to carry myself in conversations with folks and even had a few store employees ask if I had any formal tasting training. I just point em this direction. So thank you for this format.

Dickel had a slightly different technique when charcoal filtering. Was in the service with a guy from the town where they were originally from his father was the charcoal making guy and had worked for Dickel for 38 years. This was in 79 and that is the year I first tried George Dickel and all these years later I always have a bottle or two on hand.

Lincoln County Process (necessary for Tennessee Whisky label) is not just charcoal, it requires Sugar Maple charcoal filtering.
Typically, if a whiskey says it’s charcoal filtered, it is filtered through activated charcoal (like what’s in a Brita filter)

Well, once Top Gear UK strapped a dead cow to the roof of a Camaro in their first US visit, they lost their documentary visa and had it swapped for an entertainment visa, so if people ever realized Top Gear was more about being entertained than it was pure information, that would have been the major turning point. That and a BBC spokesperson saying they're an entertainment show outright after people complained about the Tesla Roadster episode. Though they did have a proper running joke about the show being scripted since people thought they came up with everything on the spot. Typically Road & Track (and to a lesser extent, Motor Trend) are where people go to nerd out over cars.
TL;DR yes Daniel, your description is accurate.

All current Tennessee whiskey producers are required by Tennessee law to produce their whiskeys in Tennessee and - with the sole exception of Benjamin Prichard's - to use a filtering step known as the Lincoln County Process. So, the "requirement" of the LCP is not absolute for Tennessee whiskey producers.

The problem with defining Texas whiskey as having a "dense mid-palate" is that you also get that in regionally aged upstate New York, Arizona and Southern California whiskeys. So, apparently, the one and ONLY thing that defines Texas whiskey is the state line, not the whiskey itself.
