Rex & Daniel sample Wild Turkey's return to Rye after a resurgence in sales and compare it to an MGP rye. Big thanks to TITAN of Whiskey Ben Stahl for the bottle. Cheers!
When I first started drinking whisky, in order to help pick out individual notes, I would cover the glass of a Scotch or bourbon I'd just finished with a whisky 'hat', 'coin' etc (the lid off an old pringles tube works too). When you come back to the glass a couple of hours later and smell the aromas you can start to pick out the things beyond the ethanol much better. Also hang on to empty bottles for a couple of days with the corks still inserted and smell the aromas every now and then. I hope I haven't bored the holes off everyone with this comment.
Yeah, I don't care for the eye thing either. It reminds me of the creepy ass Instagram filters that young people insist on using. This channel, and the Whiskey Tribe, both seem to be aiming at viewers who are younger than a whiskey channel should be aimed at. I think that's why recently I find myself preferring channels like The Scotch Test Dummies, and Scotch 4 Dummies, over this one more and more. The Titan animation and music IS badass though.
Wild Turkey only distilled rye one day out of the year. By the time rye became popular they had to lower the proof to stretch the stocks while the increased production aged.
So. This is the first time I've heard/seen the Titan of whiskey thing and it's just beyond awesome. I just happened to be wearing a really nice pair of headphones when I heard it and was like "whoa am I still watching the whiskey vault or what?" Great stuff guys!
Came searching for this video because I needed to hear your thoughts. Picked myself up this finally for the first time and I can’t stop getting cinnamon apples
Delitted you guys are reviewing this one ... I've a litre occupying space on my upper shelf. I first encountered it as an 80-Proof whilst shopping during a Thanksgiving weekend a few years back, and, later, added the 101-Proof when shopping to replenish my stock from one of my favored TX retailer's. Thank you, so much, you magnificent bastards !!
Garret Rain that’s cool 😎 I would like to here Rex and Daniels opinion on it because I went and bought a bottle of the Rare Breed 116.8 proof bourbon 🥃 on there recommendation and I love it..
@@royward16 Everyone at least likes RB bourbon, and many (including me) love it. It's my desert island whiskey. BTW the new RB Rye is fricking awesome, even better than Pikesville. Really like the 101 Rye too, so if you are a WT guy, you should really like it.
Tip for picking out the flavors that has been mentioned before and Daniel does it from time to time: Put a small amount of the whiskey on your palm and then rub your hands together vigorously. Then cup your hands to your nose and smell. Air out your hands a bit to evaporate some more alcohol, then cup them to your nose again. You should be able to pick out a lot of smells that would have otherwise been covered up by the alcohol. Cheers!
I love this as a mixer for what I call an Old Fashioned Cherry Coke. (Old fashioned with a splash of Coke and a couple maraschino cherries thrown in). I’m a bourbon drinker usually but this rye is great in cocktails where bourbon would be too sweet.
For me I got better at tasting notes of whiskey just by drinking more. For one of my birthdays my sister got me a bunch of those tiny shot bottles. I started sipping on them (not all at once XD) and slowly I became accustomed to the taste/burn. There's quite a selection of them too. I had macallans, highland park, knob Creek bulleit.. I even found one of my favorite bourbons, larceny. I tried my best to write notes at the beginning. Eventually I went back to the first few whisk(e)ys I had and reviewed the notes to add or take back notes. I made it a hobby. I will say smelling is a little harder. I liked to smell at the end because the burn was dampened. I haven't mastered nosing.
Can you do a full Quintessential run down video? I feel like one day it was empty the next it was full. Or make a playlist with all the quintessential whiskey videos
On the rey my grandfather loved rey whiskeys. I have been told that back in the 20-30's when he made a bit. He would make corn to sell and made a rey for him and my guncles. My dad said he would tell him that the different kind of eyes would make a big difference in taste. Most northern strains would make a nice spicy pepper type whiskeys. But our quicker warmer weather reys in the south. Made a ruffer more bitter whiskey. I don't really know myself. But it stands to reason. From what I have seen most southern types are for animal feed or cover crops. Not for flower for breads and such like the northern types. Like I said I don't know my self. But with your contacts. You might could find out if the difference in rey strains makes a difference in whiskeys?
Cuthbert Allgood, I love the Dark Tower reference. I actually love pouring a glass, and sitting back and reading, and those books are among my favourite to read
So, Wild Turkey 101 Rye. It used to be the best rye you could buy. Period. Forever. You could find it on most liquor store shelves next to the Wild Turkey 81 Rye, and the Jim Beam Rye, and the Old Overholt, and that was the list. Then people started getting a little adventurous with brown liquor, and a couple more ryes appeared, like the High West labels and the George Dickel. Then the whole industry got rambunctious, and after a while of mooning over the scotch and bourbon, drinkers started perceptibly angling towards the rye shelf. And here's what I think happened. I think the folks at Austin Nichols noticed the uptick and did some spreadsheet distilling and realized that if the hipsters were going to start making Sazeracs they could make a few more dollars per barrel if they diluted the juice that was scheduled for the 101 down to 81. So the 750s of 101 disappeared, and I nursed my last two way past their life expectancy. Then several years after it was all gone, I noticed that there existed a form of unicorn, the 1-liter bottle of 101 Rye. Liter bottles are intended for on-premise (bar and restaurant) sale. But I cajoled the twitter account for Total Wine for months, and they found it in them to get a couple of cases to my local branch. I bought several bottles the day they said they'd be there. And was underwhelmed. The depth and body were weaker. It looked and even sounded a little less deep. I have to wonder if they had changed things significantly or even that they were bottling something sourced to keep the label alive. And now I see 101 frequently, and always in the 1L.
The algorithm unearthed this again 3-4 years later. And there's news from the world. Recently, Total Wine has completely stopped carrying the Wild Turkey 81 and 101 Rye in any format. They do still have some Russell's Reserve Rye, but there's no telling for how long.
Speaking of Rye, I will once again recommend Røknar Rye by Far North, which is finished in Cognac casks and gives it a nice sweetness. Just finishing up editing a video on it for my Whiskey channel
Interestingly, the harshness Rex and Daniel described, high ethanol etc., is what I get from their Wild Turkey bourbon as well. Though they never say similar things about the bourbon.
TL;DR: Develop your palate by analysing what you eat and creating flavour associations. I'm going to brush over a lot of things, but a simple way to taste better and identify specific flavours in whisky/coffee/alcohols/tea and develop your palate, you need to develop your "taste memory bank". One way of doing this is actually analysing and appreciating everything you eat/drink. Things like slowing down analyse for a moment the flavours/aroma in the food you eat, and the aroma in the air in gardens/nature. By doing so, you build up 'memories' of those things. By doing this continuously with a variety of foods, etc you end up being able to associate what you smell/taste in a whisky with a memory you had that smell/taste. It's like eating an orange, then drinking orange juice from a cup you cannot see the contents of. You know it tastes like orange, even though you can''t see that it is an orange; you've associate the taste of eating the fruit to the liquid in the cup. Hope this helps!
I strongly believe that Straight Rye Whiskey should be made with at least 75% Rye. Too much corn throws off the flavor in a way that makes it taste chemically and excessively sharp. 95% Rye whiskeys are generally somehow sweeter and less hot than 51-55% ryes. This may just be my experience, but I really think there is something to this.
Hey MBs, I recently got a sampler from a local liquor store that contained 3 200 ml bottles. One was Lagavulin 16, one Talisker 10 and the last Cragganmore 12. I have been dabbling more and more into the Islay scene and was enjoying a dram of Talisker. My first few sips were smokey, fruity and nutty but about halfway thru the glass I started getting this really heavy note of olive brine, more specifically, pimento stuffed green olives and for some reason, now I'm getting that note in ALL Islays I'm drinking, including pallette blowouts like Ardbeg and Laphroaig and rich, sweeter Islays like the Lagavulin. Do any of you get any similar notes/is that what Daniel and Rex mean when they say "briney" or am I going insane? Any thoughts are welcome.
Original rye flavor you want get a Pennsylvania rye or a Maryland rye. That where rye whiskey was started in the USA. I'm from Pennsylvania so just listen and go get a PA rye unless you are from Maryland get the MD rye. PA rye brand that is easy to get or were started in PA Wigel's rye, Dads Hat, Liberty / Liberty pole, and pretty budget Slow, Low, and Rock rye. This rye was started in PA bought and revived in Kentucky old Overholt rye. I only know one rye whiskey brand made in Maryland and that is Sagamore. They make beautiful ryes and if you are in Maryland get a bottle.
I've had both the Wild Turkey 101 bourbon and Wild Turkey 101 rye, but I've never had them side by side. But since the former is a high-rye bourbon and the latter a high-corn rye, I'd be interested in tasting them side-by-side. (Especially since the 101 is maybe my favorite bourbon for drinking on the rocks and it sounds as if the 101 rye, which I don't think I've every had on the rocks, apparently doesn't do at all well that way.)
I love ryes. This one burns like flouride at the dentist's office. Probably would be good for the mixer gang. Tip for drinking straight: "chew" through the burn.
Rarebreed rye was just released. Maybe distribution hasn’t made it to you yet? How available is regular rarebreed bourbon for you? It’s suppose to be a standard release once it hits your area.

I did not recognise the bottle.
I enjoy whiskey neat, but occasionally go for a nice Manhattan. I don't drink much Rye, but often keep a bottle of Rye around for Manhattan's. How would Wild Turkey 101 Rye hold up in a cocktail?
I've never tried this and only a few ryes. I love them in Manhattans but this Bulliet rye sure is dry tasting straight. Wondering if that's just the flavor profile. If try this one though.
As a guy, who is new to rye, I would like to try one that won’t make me die. I am used to bourbon and drive a suburban. I give you a yelp, hope for some help! --- I know... overly rhymey, don’t get whiny! Lol
Hey MB's I just recently bought a bottle of Monkey's Shoulder and I remember the review episode Rex mentions (jokingly) that it seems to disappear. I happen to live with an untrustworthy individual and keep tabs on the amount of whiskey in the bottles a little closer than others. I noticed that the Monkey's shoulder actually does seem to slowly evaporate over time. I remember the night I opened it, and took a whiff but didn't pour any, then by the end of the weekend, it was about 1/4 of an inch lower than originally. I also noticed condensation near the cork. Perhaps there's some truth to that joke after all. Regardless, it's still a fantastic glass.
Wait, please someone answer me cause I really want to make good whisky. What would be the difference between wild turkey's and the MGP'S rye in their production that cause such a difference? I know there are millions of variables cause i am studying to make my own distillery right now, but any 3 big ones (3 variables that have the most impact) between the "mellow"(mgp) and "brittle"(wild turkey) would be great. I know most people in Brazil wont see a difference, but i want whisky lovers to really appreciate my product (although not like the samurai scientist video) and actually have an affordable Rye in Brazil (havent found a local brand and importation tax are ridiculous plus the current dollar to real disparity stuff gets here at around two times its price).
I keep looking haven't found it so I assume you haven't done a review of Smokehead? if not how can I get a bottle to you guys to do a review? it's fast become one of my favourite peaty Islay's

I've never tried this and only a few ryes. I love them in Manhattans but this Bulliet rye sure is dry tasting straight. Wondering if that's just the flavor profile. If try this one though.
Morning Gentlemen.
WT 101 Rye is a great cocktail rye at $30 usd/liter...not the best neat
Ayyye random Dark Tower reference nice! @cuthbertallgood
Could be because it is the neck pour.
Next level on the edit 😂
So, are we just ecchoing Daniel's voice now for the Titan animations? I thought both voices were supposed to have the voice filter to it
So delicious
Love the channel got me to try different things and I found a great whisky called iron smoke
When you recognize a titan of whiskey how do you decide between the CGI animated and the " throw the bottle across the driveway " version ?
That was epic.
As a guy, who is new to rye, I would like to try one that won’t make me die. I am used to bourbon and drive a suburban. I give you a yelp, hope for some help! --- I know... overly rhymey, don’t get whiny! Lol
(although I've seen the vid) Rex, you pointed up in the corner and nothing showed up. Now the editor must face the ultimate shenanigan.
Fancy Dan, what up?
@@thehighlander3395 that's right!
Do top japanese whiskey list, top scotch, and certainly do a top 10 Daniel's whiskey
2:48 review begins
Cuthbert Allgood I wonder if anybody else caught that #darktower
New titan animation is great but I feel the toast at the end is getting stale. Can we switch back to the original or recruit a new one?
allrye, allrye, allrye!
I keep looking haven't found it so I assume you haven't done a review of Smokehead? if not how can I get a bottle to you guys to do a review? it's fast become one of my favourite peaty Islay's
Suntory isn’t Japanese whiskey?
