My son turned 21 last month and I got him a bottle of this for his birthday. Xmas day we cracked it open. Let me tell you something, this stuff will get you in trouble. It isn't the most flavorful whiskey but it is so smooth and easy to drink you could find yourself putting down an entire bottle in 1 sitting. I have never tasted a whiskey with absolutely ZERO burn. It is easier to drink than ice cold Coke I shit you not.

Now that I have binged a significant number of episodes I have learned how to properly try whiskey. Now I find myself enjoying things that were not on my radar before (Islay scotch) and having friends cuss me out for getting them sucked into the vortex as well. Keep up the fine work gents.
I got myself a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for my birthday, since it’s not cheap or easy to find around here. First time having an Islay. Turns out I’m not entirely into smoke and brine. (Maybe someday) BUT I’m not disappointed. I love exploring and now I know that I don’t dislike any whiskeys, and most importantly what kind I like better; Thanks to you.

I am a Marine tank mechanic (2007-2011) and the way you guys take a whisk(e)y from, "it's whisk(e)y" all the way down to individual flavors/smells/experiences reminds me of trouble shooting as a mechanic, we go from "it's broken" to an exact solution.

I bought a bottle of this a year ago and it’s still sealed and with my parents who are in South Africa and I’m in New Zealand. Waiting for them to come visit and to bring it with. I have to say that I prefer the older “green” Jameson bottles. I paid about NZ$100 less in South Africa for this bottle compared to what it costs here in New Zealand, and the bottle is 50ml bigger in SA. I actually paid the equivalent of US$105 (ZAR1600) for my 750ml bottle of Jameson 18 in South Africa, and I saw it as low as US$85 there after I purchased mine.
I saw this in store and wanted to see a review before I bought it. It’s €€83 here and got it with a discount for €75 which seems a fair price now. Thanks again for the review :).

Back about a million years ago when I was a young musician, a band director once described notes as either tulips or daisies. That is exactly what the shape thing reminded me of.
I know it's not bourbon but I get a ton of Oakiness when I add a few drops of water in green spot. It takes away some of the other sweet and Irish notes and promotes the wood side. Noticed this when exploring it and was enjoying a flight with Green Spot, Yellow Spot and Redbreast.
Also, talking about oak barrels: I know it wouldn't be "whisky", but what if you aged your spirits in Apple barrels? What do you think the impact would be?

For a while I was using Henry McKennan Bottled in Bond to show people what wood notes are. I think it shows oak fairly well and is also fairly oily, so it carries a lot through the palate.

2:45 the signature distillates they are referring to is the different types of grain or pot distillates Midleton produce, they don't make any of their own Malt Whiskey in midleton (jameson is only pot & grain) also the jameson 18 comes in a cask strength, have not tried it myself yet, but all I have heard say its well better!!!!
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is Oaky and in a good way. While not nearly as Oaky, I enjoy the oakiness of Michters American. Interesting that you mention iodine in the same episode as you remove the Laphroaig from its rightful place.
Of the Irish Whiskeys I like Bushmills Black maybe even better than Red Breast 12. I would like to see Conner McGregor's Proper Twelve reviewed. It sells for around $26 on the coast of South Carolina.and to me rivals some of the more expensive brands.
I feel vindicated!! Got this whiskey as a Christmas gift and I loved it. It was a bit harsh for my dad who gave it to me. But, now, everything he is at the house he mooches a little lol so there's that lol
Granted I don't drink alcohol, but I always imagined that a "shiny" whiskey hits you more at the front or center of your tongue with some sort of sharp flavor like a soda or sparkling water would, and a "dull" or "deep" whiskey would hit you more in the back of the mouth or throat like it's trying to gag you like overly sickly deeply sweet things like caramel or too much brown sugar would. Accurate analogy or am I just dumb?
Tasting notes like "shiny", "metallic", "rounded" etc. are essentially synesthetic sensations, ask yourself "If I saw what I'm tasting, what would it look like?". It is often hard to describe to someone who's not familiar with it, as it the act of putting words to this comes with experience. It is in fact believed that most if not all humans experience some kind of synesthesia, like most people will for example associate colour to temperature ("warm" or "cold" colours), or as Daniel pointed out, words that sound "pointy" or "dull".

I could not agree more with the $150 price point not being worth it. 10+ years ago, and I understand prices change over time, you could buy this bottle for $80-90 and it was too expensive then. At that time Jameson put out a 12 year old that was running around 45 or $50 a bottle. Strictly my opinion I understand, but I felt it actually was twice as good in flavor as the entry-level Jameson that was offered, however, the 18-year old was not twice's good again as the mid-level. Please forgive my ramblings and be well. ;)
What's the difference between this Jameson 18 Years and the Jameson 18 Years Limited Reserve? I had the Limited Reserve last week and want to buy the bottle now, but the Limited Reserve is alot more expensive. :(
I think balcones has a wide enough distribution to classify it as no longer craft. For a good oaky whiskey, almost any balcones will do you well due to the Texas impact.
I doubt anyone will actually see this at this point, but as far as that oaky whiskey question goes: I used to work a job installing wood floors at people homes. We always worked with oak specifically and most of the time would be spent shaving and sanding the wood. Every day, even if we wore masks, I'd come back to my car with unfathomable amounts of sawdust clogging up my nose. I could keep blowing out the sawdust for several hours after as I went about the rest of my day. One day I went to a local liquor store where they recommended I try Makers 46 if I wanted a nice somewhat complex bourbon. So I took it home, opened the bottle, and had an immediate wave of wage-cuck ferocity wash over me as I noticed that the whiskey seemed to have been aged within my dusty nostrils. It was such a bitter flashback that I only drank the one glass and thanked the heavens my roommate at the time was a raging alcoholic who could make use of the celestial mockery that had befallen me. Anyway...Makers 46...smells like wood, tastes like wood. Great as a reference point, imo.

Woodford double oaked is a good one to see what wood impact is. Compare it to regular woodford bourbon and you’ll really get a feel for wood impact.

@@DrSkeff unbelievable man. its like more than 200 euros. i dont know if there are any taxes and regulations if you buy a bottle of spirit from another country. but i think no matter how high the taxes are it will still be profitable. i wonder how much a bottle of lagavulin 16 costs there?
That 18 year Jameson sounds awesome! Are we gonna finish the quintessential wall? Also, I would go with Elijah Craig as a wood heavy bourbon.
Dan, it is a wonderful whiskey. Im not sure where they purchased it but in my state of Missouri I have gotten if from $109 - $119
For bourbon, Woodford or Woodford Double Oak might be highest wood character I've had.
For scotch, I'd say Deanston 18.
Evan Williams Single Barrel has that heavy oak flavor for me.
Second that! Brother-in-law got me a bottle for Christmas. Will never be a favorite but worth the experience.

Hibiki Harmony has those same little facets around the bottle, but no long neck.
For me Jameson is one of the best whiskeys i like it its a little bit sweet sour thats how i feel it balanced not only budget but i feel its like best for the prise
Anyone try the Trader Joes 19 year Highland Single Malt?? Also, do we have any reason not to believe the age of these spirits? Is there a way to know for sure, or we cannot tell if a spirit is made with accelerated aging or natural aging?
