Do you find it ironic that directly across the distillery on the other side of the river is the Frankfort Waste Water Treatment Plant? 😜 I’m not saying they use waste water I just find it mildly ironic. So while the smell you get on one side of the river may be pleasing the other side....uhh not so much. 😇 it’s all about perspective. Hahahahaha
Recently bought Eagle rare 2 weeks ago for the first time in 2 years. Poured a little bit from a 2 year bottle with a quarter left, taste tested it. Then opened and tried the new bottle of eagle rare and was relieved to see that the flavor is still wonderfully the same, :) Thank you Buffalo Trace for keeping the flavor the same and not ruining anything, Cheers!
Buffalo Trace was the first bourbon I truly enjoyed at the start of my whiskey journey, and its still my Old Faithful. I can always go back to it as my tastes evolve and I still enjoy it.
@@DanielMiranda-rq6tu I really enjoy Makers 46 and Four Roses Single Barrel at the moment. If we expand the definition to American Whiskey, then Michter's American is always amazing when I can find it for a reasonable price.
I toured Buffalo Trace recently, they said Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace are the same mix, but Buffalo Trace Barrels are stored 25 feet higher in the storage house. That difference in temperature is the only difference between the two.
I still have 2 bottles of Eagle Rare 101, I think it's around 35 years old now, maybe sometime in the next couple years I'll crack it open and drink it! Or ...maybe I'll sell it!

I myself enjoy the Buffalo Trace over the Eagle Rare Bourbon so much that I just opened my 50th bottle of Buffalo Trace and I am taking the Buffalo Trace distillery tour in September. Thanks Guy's...
While I wouldn't say that either Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare are amazing, they are both really good, rock solid bourbons for the price. I also applaud Buffalo Trace for not jacking up the price in the wake of massive demand. I can only occasionally find either standard Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare, but when I do they are always 27 and 35 dollars, respectively.
4 years ago Eagle Rare was a stocked shelf item in my state of Idaho but now it's so popular it's considered a truly rare whiskey, and is quietly restocked in the back and you have to ask about the "rare stock". I didn't fully appreciate ER until I wanted it and couldn't get it. And it is truly impossible to substitute another product with its taste profile. It is truly unique and a delightful bourbon!
I'm still new to whiskey, but Buffalo Trace is currently my go-to for cocktails. It's quality enough to elevate the drink compared to your standard well-whiskeys, but affordable enough that it doesn't feel sacrilegious to mix it. I'll still occasionally have some neat, of course.
I got to admit I get real excited when you guys review whiskey I have heard of and can get. Buffalo Trace is easy to find in central Indiana but Eagle Rare not so much. Still looking for that one.
Buffalo Trace is one I REALLY wanted to be in my four recommended bourbons due to my own whiskey journey over the past three years. I did make my own review video on it when I first sampled it from my own bottle a month ago. I had it for the first time in December of 2017 on my own channel and it was literally the second whiskey I ever filmed myself tasting. It's a wonderful introduction for someone who has never really partaking in straight spirits, I know back then I still had to get used to the alcohol smell. I also need to buy a new bottle... it um... went quick since it was a smaller bottle, just like my Wild Turkey 101 always does at my bar. It will always be a must bourbon to my own private tastings. I host them for friends, family and associates for now. I've even been mulling over a checklist for them to mark off before the tasting so I know what other bottles they might prefer. Does the Wizard Academy have such a checklist for trying to narrow down a persons taste profile? The quick method I use is that I always ask how they take their morning coffee. And if they don't drink that, I can just gauge what their most common beverage of choice seems to be, and go from there. ;)
Finally!! After so many Vault and Tribe episodes that refer to going to the "Buffalo Trace" video for more info. I knew I wasn't crazy. Ironically I think many of the other videos with Buffalo Trace gave even more distinctive notes than the solo one by itself. Well Played guys...well played.

Also I’ve found for a little twist adding half a teaspoon (3ml) of either Bruichladdich Black Art or Glendronach Cask Strength to a dram of Buffalo Trace, smooths it out and adds a whole lot more complexity for not a lot of $ 👌🏻
Didnt get me into the whiskey scene, but just picked up a bottle for the first time and i was not dissappointed. Might be my favorite $20 whiskey, definitely in top 3

It was fun to introduce her to some of the nosing and tasting techniques I've learned from you both. She's not much of a whiskey lover but I think she really enjoyed it too! Cheers!
Wild Turker 101, although my favorite everyday drinker, is not an "introductory" bourbon, in my opinion. At 101, a bit too much bite, I think. Coincidentally, I have always used Eagle Rare as my introductory bourbon for newbies. Smooth, buttery, easy drinking. Good for a beginner.
I’m so excited I’m kind of new to the whisky tribe and I love scotch and bourbon so fare and was inspired to get some glencairn glasses and it makes such a difference
At my local stores, both of these are in pretty short supply. The Buffalo Trace goes so quick that many store have implemented a one bottle per day rule. I visited the store four days in a row, but only netted three bottles. When BT is out I go Eagle Rare. Man, I love the Buffalo.

I've recently just had my first BT and ER tastes ever and I can say I'll try to have one bottle of each on my bar shelf at all times. I'm going in a month to the distillery in Frankfort and am super pumped! Cheers, guys!
I am just the opposite! I love the eagle rare and don’t care for the buffalo trace. A cheaper bottle that I found I love is Evan Williams 1783. Bought a fifth for $14.99 and it’s a 10 year old bourbon.
Seriously, Evan 1783 is The best cheap bourbon I've ever found . I've always been amazed I don't see it recommended much. But I'm fine with it remaining cheap and under the radar...
I much prefer Eagle Rare to Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace is only 40% here in the UK though. Thank God they still bottle Eagle Rare at 45% for the UK market
These are two of my go to bourbons. In my area however, they don't last long on the shelf (PA). In fact we have a limit per sale of maximum 3 bottles per purchase. Right now we are out of Eagle Rare and down to 8 bottles of Buffalo Trace. (FYI Ton of Jim Beam and JD.)
Even here in central Kentucky, a lot of people don't even think that bourbon is whiskey, so I'm not surprised at all that a lot of people haven't heard of Buffalo Trace.
Episode 239 was Eagle Rare with both of you and was the featured whiskey. I only know this because I found a random bottle last night that the owner had just put on the shelf along with the super cheap stuff, as a unicorn. This is in CO Springs, CO. Was a sweet find, so had to watch the reviews today! Cheers you MBs!
I’ve been sitting here sipping on this all evening, and I’ve noticed apple and cinnamon stand out to me a lot, but there’s been a very string flavor that I couldn’t pick out, and once “freshness” was mentioned, it made me immediately pick out what it was; fresh cut grass. I’m probably one of the rare cases, but I LOVE the smell of fresh cut grass enough to enjoy the flavor of it (only other time I know I tasted fresh cut grass was the bean-boozled jelly beans, so don’t worry, I’m not out eating grass as I mow the lawn).
I've started to watch these videos when I happen to have the same whiskey at home and taste it along with you to practice and see how much similarity I get with what you get. I've come to see that it's quite common to taste the same major notes but some of the supporting notes I'll get different things. I seem to get amaretto a lot of times when you guys get something like icing or vanilla. I wonder how much memories and other intangible factors affect an individual's palate compared to physical taste bud differences.
As someone who just entering the world of whiskey at least from an appreciation stand point in comparison to my younger years taking shots or having mixed drinks I am really curious about finding out the best intro whiskey to each category that you guys discussed with your feature shelf
Both of you guys are convincing me to give this bourbon a shot, I consider myself more of a scotch fan and have only tried the most basic and mainstream of bourbons finding I didn’t care for them. I’ll for sure add Buffalo Trace to my list for a bourbon to try.
@@InstrumentalKINGblog it’s tough to find here in Canada, but a while back here since writing above I actually found a bottle of Eagle Rare in a store and liked it a fair bit. I didn’t get to compare it against Buffalo Trace.

Hadn't been able to find Eagle Rare in any local place. But somehow on a 1400 mile road trip, I found some in a gas station outside of Des Moines Iowa. Really love it, and while I usually have a budget bourbon to mix with root beer for a cool summer drink, I have found the Buffalo Trace is quite delicious in apple juice.
Hey guys, love the channel and website. Your reviews are always accurate, descriptive, and entertaining. My first bourbon was two fingers of Buffalo Trace neat about 15 years ago, and as you correctly stated, it totally turned me on to the entire genre. Keep up the good work!
Thanks to watching your videos, I’ve started drinking whisky. Bought my first bottle of eagle rare yesterday, it’s lovely to drink but a bit too expensive to be my everyday drink. I’m in Australia. $84 -700ml
You guys have convinced me to try the BT again. I’ve only tried it like once or twice and much preferred ER and have bought multiple bottles of the ER. But ER is almost impossible to find but you can find BT here in southern Ohio.
I love how these guys don’t exclude people newer to whiskey, like me. With this kind of stuff, I feel like the people who are deep into it really ostracize people who aren’t as deep into the hobby. I like that these guys review and don’t trash whiskeys that are more affordable and accessible.
My two favorites!❤️ I never would have guessed they were the same mash bill. Eagle Rare has always been my very favorite. Until a couple of years ago, I could always get it for $28. That was perfection at a great price in my humble opinion!
Im from UK and bought eagle rare from Asda and its hands down the best bourbon i have ever had, so hard to get here though. Asda do not sell it anymore.
You got me so excited for a trip to Asda before I saw the end of your comment lol. I have however, found that Amazon is your friends. Loads of ER there dude.
This was spot on message - I’m new to bourbon and watched a number of your posts. My first was Buffalo Trace (loved it and at $60.00, was doable) followed by Weller 12 yr.($199.00 and not nearly as enjoyable). Took a short break and then tried Eagle Rare (really nice, slightly more than Buffalo at $80.00). Then I tried Four Roses ($85.00) - was disappointing with a burn in, followed by burn and finished with a burn!. So my journey pretty much follows your recommendations. One thing I will say about Four Roses - it becomes a lot more enjoyable when it’s the only bottle left on the shelf!
What state are those prices the weller 12 goes for whatever people will pay for it but the others are inflated. Try evan Williams bottled in bond its excellent readily available and cheap.
Have they made a video about the shelf they talked about? I've gone through around ~10 bottles and Buffalo Trace is now the first I truly love. that shelf sounds like a perfect guide for me to dip my toes into each category.
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but the eagle rare is same mash bill aged ten years on the middle shelves of the warehouse which is why there is a different flavor profile.
It'll change all the time like mine do, but yeah, the first one will be good. Are they going to do One single Malt Scotch and one Blended Scotch? Or one Campbeltown, one Speyside.
Sitting here enjoying this video 4 months later while enjoying a glass of monkey shoulder ( the first whiskey I ever tried after watching your videos on it ). I’m loving the videos guys!
BUFFALO TRACE is the BEST!!!! (in all seriousness, I smell my grandfather's tobacco -- KY tobacco farmer, who made his own aromatic blend for smoking a pipe, and YES, I still have a jar of his pipe tobacco that I take a sniff of occasionally to bring back memories of my Grandpa).
Haven’t been drinking much bourbon compared to scotch ect, but recently picked up a bottle of buffalo trace and I’m really enjoying its fruitiness and complexity.
My picks for the shelf would go Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101, Elijah Craig SB, rye would be Rittenhouse, Pikesville, knob Creep Straight Rye. Scotland Glenfarclas 12yo, Ardbeg 10yo, Glenmorangie 10yo International Kavalan Solist
This is a barrel pick of Buffalo Trace not just the regular offering. That makes this a single barrel, which varies a lot but I have been WILDLY impressed with these when I can find them.

Buffalo trace is my current go to bourbon. You can't buy any bourbon in Australia for under forty AU anymore so paying a little bit extra for Buffalo trace is well worth it. 😎👍
I just had BT as my first whiskey recently and it was a very solid choice, I believe I picked it up from some video you guys did. Only downside is that man, if you forget to clean that glass, it'll take some heavy washing to get rid of that ripe fruit odor.

The eagle rare barrels are stored at the bottom in more "cellar" like conditions and the Bourbon Trace barrels mid to top with larger temperature fluctuations. The larger temperature fluctuations result in the whiskey pulling more flavors from the barrel.
Ha, holy shit that's awesome. Thanks for that tidbit!

I've recently just had my first BT and ER tastes ever and I can say I'll try to have one bottle of each on my bar shelf at all times. I'm going in a month to the distillery in Frankfort and am super pumped! Cheers, guys!
Jeff Robichaud was just there this past weekend. Make sure to take the ghost tour!
I’ve been there a few times. The tours are awesome. If you’re lucky you’ll get a tour with Freddie Johnson. He’s the man. Have fun!
@@brooksbishop5580 my girlfriend noticed that on their website and it sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@tb18761 Thanks Tim!
Tim Bacon Freddie is a great tour guide
I am just the opposite! I love the eagle rare and don’t care for the buffalo trace. A cheaper bottle that I found I love is Evan Williams 1783. Bought a fifth for $14.99 and it’s a 10 year old bourbon.
Seriously, Evan 1783 is The best cheap bourbon I've ever found . I've always been amazed I don't see it recommended much. But I'm fine with it remaining cheap and under the radar...
I will try this out
dude me too. I love the eagle
@@Jeremy-kg1zr i will try it and then never ever speak of it again!
That’s odd because Eagle rare and buffalo trace are the exact same thing, the only difference is eagle rare is stored 25’ higher.
I much prefer Eagle Rare to Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace is only 40% here in the UK though. Thank God they still bottle Eagle Rare at 45% for the UK market
Eagle Rare is hands down my favorite Bourbon. Unfortunately living in Ohio, it's hard as hell to find!
Jamison Roberts but you guys get all the Weller up there!
Just drive south... you’ll find Kentucky. You can’t miss us.
Eagle Rare is basically a 10-yr, single barrel version of Buffalo Trace. Basically.
Are all eagle rare single barrel ? I thought only the store pics were
Even here in central Kentucky, a lot of people don't even think that bourbon is whiskey, so I'm not surprised at all that a lot of people haven't heard of Buffalo Trace.
Please review Old Grand dad 114. Such a good bourbon for the price.
Vincent Arroyo You can get OGD 114 for about $21 while it is $30 in Ohio if available.
Over here in the UK we are seeing more and more bourbons. to ,my opinion Bullafo Trace and Wild Turkey are my go tos.
As someone who just entering the world of whiskey at least from an appreciation stand point in comparison to my younger years taking shots or having mixed drinks I am really curious about finding out the best intro whiskey to each category that you guys discussed with your feature shelf
update?
Both of you guys are convincing me to give this bourbon a shot, I consider myself more of a scotch fan and have only tried the most basic and mainstream of bourbons finding I didn’t care for them. I’ll for sure add Buffalo Trace to my list for a bourbon to try.
what did u think?
@@InstrumentalKINGblog it’s tough to find here in Canada, but a while back here since writing above I actually found a bottle of Eagle Rare in a store and liked it a fair bit. I didn’t get to compare it against Buffalo Trace.
It may be late but it's better than never! Keep up the good work, I live in Atlanta now, but this Kentucky kid is always happy to watch vids about back home! Cheers!
Literally the next video in my autoplay is the buffalo trace episode. Love the channel guys. Cheers
Its my all time favorite. I bought a bottle in Hannaford grocery store. Bar Harbor, Maine $24.
BT is what I started on! Love this episode! Take your other MB's Buffalo Hunting!
$84 -700ml
Maybe you can get someone in the states to send you a case in a plain wrapper
You guys have convinced me to try the BT again. I’ve only tried it like once or twice and much preferred ER and have bought multiple bottles of the ER. But ER is almost impossible to find but you can find BT here in southern Ohio.
Buffalo Trace, whiskey that started it all for me
I love how these guys don’t exclude people newer to whiskey, like me. With this kind of stuff, I feel like the people who are deep into it really ostracize people who aren’t as deep into the hobby. I like that these guys review and don’t trash whiskeys that are more affordable and accessible.
as some one who is still new to whiskey I am really exited about this new shelf you are talking about
My two favorites!❤️ I never would have guessed they were the same mash bill. Eagle Rare has always been my very favorite. Until a couple of years ago, I could always get it for $28. That was perfection at a great price in my humble opinion!
Buffalo is such a great value whisky.
If you can find it, Henry Mckenna also great price
Im from UK and bought eagle rare from Asda and its hands down the best bourbon i have ever had, so hard to get here though. Asda do not sell it anymore.
You got me so excited for a trip to Asda before I saw the end of your comment lol. I have however, found that Amazon is your friends. Loads of ER there dude.
@@Commendatori89 Ah sorry I got your hopes up lol, its currently £30 on Amazon. 😁
Beautiful shelf idea. Im still new to this whiskey thing but I need a solid base for each category. Also u can do favorites and introductory pick
Wow, no social distancing needed back in 2019. Weren't those the good old days?
Hahaha
Alcohol kills germs...lol
Have they made a video about the shelf they talked about? I've gone through around ~10 bottles and Buffalo Trace is now the first I truly love. that shelf sounds like a perfect guide for me to dip my toes into each category.
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but the eagle rare is same mash bill aged ten years on the middle shelves of the warehouse which is why there is a different flavor profile.
I’m so here for the quintessential whisk(e)y of each category video.
It'll change all the time like mine do, but yeah, the first one will be good. Are they going to do One single Malt Scotch and one Blended Scotch? Or one Campbeltown, one Speyside.
@@djsaunter I'm hoping that the answer is yes to all of the above.
Sitting here enjoying this video 4 months later while enjoying a glass of monkey shoulder ( the first whiskey I ever tried after watching your videos on it ). I’m loving the videos guys!
If you mixed in the small batch four roses, would it have been called the Smeagel ?!
tried 4 roses. won't buy it again. not sayin' it's bad. just better bourbon out there. like, of ...eagle rare and da buff.
Buffalo Trace is the perfect Bourbon, price and taste
BUFFALO TRACE is the BEST!!!! (in all seriousness, I smell my grandfather's tobacco -- KY tobacco farmer, who made his own aromatic blend for smoking a pipe, and YES, I still have a jar of his pipe tobacco that I take a sniff of occasionally to bring back memories of my Grandpa).
You guys did a video on just Eagle Rare in 2017 FYI.
I always get that strong apple note with buffalo trace. Very fresh and enjoyable
For the price I really like Benchmark. I think its EXCELLENT to mix.
Scotland
Glenfarclas 12yo, Ardbeg 10yo, Glenmorangie 10yo
International
Kavalan Solist
This is a barrel pick of Buffalo Trace not just the regular offering. That makes this a single barrel, which varies a lot but I have been WILDLY impressed with these when I can find them.
after watching this it helped me name the taste of the buffalo trace I was getting that wasn't cherry, and I hadn't had Fiji apple before, but last week I had a Fiji apple drink and now I'm sipping buffalo trace and sonofabitch it's true. much love always -The Whiskey Pirate
Eagle rare is my go to bourbon! If only others didn't like it so much.... it would be easier to find.
Allocation is a rough mistress
@@LeatherDaddy97 thankfully WT 101 exists
I had Buffalo Trace for the first time last night it is awesome........
