- The gents run another experiment with two different bottlings of Monkey Shoulder to determine how far notes can diverge over time in small-operation blends.
Thanks to Patron Saint Ryan Butler for the bottle. Cheers!
To whomever added the [U] to flavour in the title... I appreciate it.
True, it adds an extra layer.

Mad props to the guys for the serious and considerate toast. Losing someone is a very tough situation. You can always tell good people when they take it seriously.
I got turned on to Monkey Shoulder by this channel, but never watched you guys give smell/tasting notes. When I tried it I always got lemon, but I was still very new in my quest to fine flavor notes.
To hear you guys say "citrus" makes me very happy and proud of myself.
I have always been a bourbon guy and have been watching you videos for a while. Today is my birthday and decided to branch out. I bought a bottle of Monkey Shoulder today and I love it. Thanks for the great videos!!
I have the same story, did not realize it was a blended scotch. I've always disliked scotch...but I found one I like!
I do thoroughly enjoy this flavor drift exercise. Also batch differences are fun to explore. You guys should do a favorite releases for 2020. Thanks guys!

Thanks for introducing me to Monkey Shoulder. Great blended scotch
This was the fist Scotch I started buying and enjoying for myself! Love this stuff. My second one was "something special" scotch blends are great!
Thanks to your videos and those of the whiskey dictionary, I decided to buy my first whisky instead of drinking from whatever bottle we have at home. My first bottle is Monkey Shoulder batch 27 and I love it. Thank you!
I had a bottle of Monkey shoulder that had been opened and sat in my cabinet for sometime and when I revisited it it had a strong scent of butterscotch sweetness and was absolutely delicious. Hands down my favorite blended scotches I’ve tried so far.
Just bought my first bottle of monkey shoulder. I didn’t expect to find it locally (Wyoming) and I am soo glad I did! Loving it!
Guys, I can't contain my shock and excitement! I bought Ardbeg 10 yesterday which is my first Islay. My wife is not a whiskey person whatsoever. Even the softest Irish is too much. However, I told her to just smell the Ardbeg and she says she smelled Vanilla of all things. After a sip, it was the first whiskey she actually kinda liked! The Ardbeg cult must be up to some mysticism.
Rodney Blackstone: really sorry about your son. I recently lost my dad to kidney failure on jan 19 2019. He struggled with dialysis for a year and a half. It hurt me every time they connected him to that damn machine because it would hurt him. When he passed, a part of me was glad that he wasn't suffering anymore, but 20 years old, damn. My prayers go out to you and your family sir. 🙏
Thank you
Thank you for that Rodgers and Hammerstein moment, Daniel!
I’ve never been this early: love this channel!
So glad you guys got to try a decent version of the caribbean. When you were doing the original review I kept wondering if there was something up with your bottle.
Hadn’t tried monkey shoulder previously but after watching this I bought a bottle and have to say this is very good
Love it when you go off on side tangents!
Just picked up a bottle of this one last week, and man i just love Monkey Shoulder, but despite the difrrent number that may be on the bottle, Monkey will allways be Monkey Shoulder for me🙂Cheers guys and keep up the good work! You two are doing awesome
Love the “Flavor Drift” series. I’ve heard from friends that Monkey Shoulder (and others) have “changed too much” for their tastes. I have maintained that their tastes have matured more than there was an actual change in the whisky.
I think you are probably right
Hi folks! Loving the channel! Just an FYI = The bottle with the dark neck sleeve is the newer packaging, the one with 'THE ORIGINAL' txt on the label. We also have something crazy new launching in JULY!! :)
I came here just for this comment, thanks Joe!! I watched the whole video thinking just that!
I’ve been enjoying this bottle for some time now for the price it’s hard to beat .
I've got 269843.
About to try it for the first time!
Thanks for the review!
You've been saying you didn't have monkey shoulder in the vault for months. I've been bamboozled! Run amok!
Great content guys! I love it. I'd really like to see some Whistlepig reviews. Like Samurai Scientist vs. THE BOSS HOG VII vs. 15 YEAR STRAIGHT RYE vs. The Boss Hog Vth Edition: "The Spirit of Mauve". I think it would be SO AWESOME to get a great Whistlepig line up & compare them all.
Time drift is a thing too, opened or not. Opened a bit more, but the air in the bottle can only absorb a small amount of alcohol, and impart little to the whiskey. Though,..... a near empty bottle of anything is always odd. I just bought my first MONKEY SHOULDER today, and tried it. Very "Speyside"! This is exceptionally approachable. Citrus and candy, then caramel apple, then apricot and pear with a great malt note on it. Mmmm tasty.
Although I work in the whisky industry, I’m not really a whisky drinker. I really enjoy your reviews, so decided to purchase a bottle of monkey should (half the bottle is gone already 😂)
The six digit numbers on the bottle are just label codes i.e. legal information for different countries.
I drink a lot of WT 101 and I notice pretty significant differences in bottles. Most bottles are great, but sometimes I get one that is harsh, like the juice wasn’t aged long enough. I have a theory that the holiday season bottles are lower quality because they have to pump out a lot more product and blend more “new” whisky in batches.
One of my favorite scotch’s. Fist would be compass box artist blend
For some odd reason, I really enjoy the dolphin noises in the “Magnificent Bastard” segment 🤣😆 🐬
Great insight! Enjoyed a little knobb creek rye
After drinking it bars bought first bottle for home drinking. It’s not complex but it’s a really easy drinker that mixes well. The sweetness and young ness reminds me of American whisky.
Drinking this now after a glass of Talisker Storm and it's amazing coming off a Smokey whiskey .. wow !! Getting so much coconut like Green Spot. Amazing !!!!
I just bought a bottle to try before thanksgiving. It’s much better than Jamison or proper 12. 👍
I bought my first bottle of Monkey Shoulder last week, and it has the same top as the older bottle. I picked it as my first Scotch because I knew it would be mostly sweet and friendly
Also, I get a funk note on the nose that I can’t describe other than yeasty. But I don’t think that’s completely right. If someone can help me out that would be awesome. In the palette I get a mild but very prevalent vanilla note, and a little bit of the same funk from the nose.
I used to work at Glenfiddich (warehouseman) and the distilleries you mentioned are the only 3 used in making Monkey. Now a warehouseman at Chivas. A question for you guys, Just managed to get a Glenlivet 16 yr old single cask editions bottle, the American Hogshead (New York) one. Before i open it, what are the taste notes I should be looking for.
Love the videos guys, couple of quick questions that came to mind after watching the video: Can whiskey go bad after you open the bottle? How long can you trust an opened bottle?
Almost through my second bottle of Monkey Shoulder and I liked how they were very similar. I started out on Johnny Walker (mostly red, black when I could afford it) and one of the things I didn't like about it was how different bottles could be. Also, recently got my first bottle of Laphoaig. I enjoy it but coming from Speysides man that is soooo different.
I love it when you singing show tunes
Tried my third Islay scotch whiskey (Port Charolette, Islay Barley 2012, heavily peated). The amount of time it took for me to become a peathead was far too fast.
I’ve noticed that Larceny I bought a week ago taste quite different from that I had prior. About six month stretch. Spoke to like four others who said same.
ive got 269843, literally JUST bought it yesterday and i love it already.
The neck air gap could definitely affect the flavour by a little oxidation. I've tried the same experiment with 2 bottles from a twin pack of Monkey Shoulder, with one opened around a month before the other, and the full level just below the neck of the open bottle.
I've often noticed the flavour changing after even just a few days with neck fill bottles, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse, but that was the first time I tried basically the exact same bottles back to back, but one opened for a month.
Edit for spelling error
Found you fine fellows last month and been viewing your playlist solely based on what you were reviewing for the episode. You've expanded my palate considerably from my quite extensive collection of rum. Thank you for that. I do have a question: given the time of year, do you know of a whiskey Advent Calendar? One that would have 24 mini bottles and a full size one for Christmas? It may be a bit late for this year, but that would be something neat to review if it existed. Keep up the good work.
First time I’ve come this early and not disappointed my wife.
You win. No other comments win this day.
I've seen these everywhere.
YOU LOSE!!!!!!

@@danielhagans4304 I came early once. That Playboy magazine was never the same.
HOLY SHIT!!!! I thought my mother was the only one to watch that version of Cinderella.
Best channel on youtube.
I didn't realize one of the whiskies in Monkey Shoulder is Glenfiddich! That explains why just having recently gotten a bottle to try ($60 in my area, mind you...) it reminded me so much of the MS.
I've definitely noticed different "vintages" of local craft beer. I'm sure this changes based on availability of ingredients and such. One year I could have sworn I could tell differences in batches. Unfortunately that was the last year they produced my favorite saison.
I just got a Jameson select reserve small batch. Apparently it's not there in USA?
New whiskey drinker here. I would love to hear your thoughts on decanters, i think it would be a great video for the noobs. Should i store Whiskey in a decanter and for how long? Is it more of a show piece or is their some benefit to using one? All the pros and cons.
Bruichladdich gives vintage for Octomore as well as the Dark Art. It definitely requires a certain amount of care for terroir to disclose that, though
I enjoy watching you guys, it’s cool.
BUT
I just find it really hard to believe that you can detect ANY differences in these two. Shit, I can’t tell any flavors that anyone describes in any whiskies and while I haven’t drank as much as you guys, I’ve definitely had a bunch of whisky.
Nice job 👍🏼
Lord knows how Rex managed to stay in his stance and not get pulled offsides by Daniel's prancy singing, but good show! 👏👏👏
Robert Premeaux would have went better had they drank more first...
I’d like to see a comparison between the 43% and 40% versions of monkey shoulder. We can only get the 40% here 😢
I haven't had the Johnny Walker they are comparing, but I absolutely love Monkey Shoulder. I'm not big on Scotch, but could drink this nearly everyday.
''Yeah, I see what you mean.''- Said literally with eyes closed.
Wonder if this now has some Ailsa Bay from the recently opened Single Malt Distillery in the Girvan Grain Distillery?
Greg Vangsness here! I had hoped this day might never come!! I don't know if I can bear to watch this episode! All you would have to do is sing: 'It's raining men!' 😭
OMG.......sooooo goooooooood🥃
Batch27 isn't a marketing thing, it means, that there are 27 different casks, that go into one bottle, so it's a batch of 27 casks.
Was gunna say it is a thing and different from the standard.
Rex is slowly easing into a Santa belly...
14:00 re the whisky year vintages, I'm not against the idea but would there be enough flavour variation in barley/grain crops year to year to differentiate vintage statements?
The only real thing I notice on the "neck pour" I also get as long as the bottle is like >50% filled and I've let it sit there for a while. At least with bourbons.
I've got a bottle over here in the UK with 228966 on, so can't imagine that's a batch number. Bought probably 6-8 months ago.
One of my favourite go to whiskeys 👌🏻
Favorite go to whisky
Hey Daniel and Rex! So my two reviews are about 5 years apart, and I noticed the same thing, flavour drift, in a big way. I think when you look at the marketing changes, and the ramped up sales of Kininvie, my conclusion is that either a) young Aisla Bay is being used in lieu of Kininvie(imagery of its stills no longer used) or b)this is now a quadruple malt of Glenfiddich Balvenie Kininvie and Ailsa Bay.
It dropped 8 points for me. Makes me wish I had grabbed an extra like you but who’da thought I’d miss old Monkey Shoulder???
Cheers🥃🥃🥃🥃

Flavor drift: the easiest way to double your content! Also very interesting for whisky nerds, excuse me, "whisk(e)y enthusiasts"
I love these videos !! pls do a JW Gold reserve
Who the heck keeps a bottle of Monkey Shoulder for more than two months??
I picked up a 5th for the weekend, gone in sub 24 hours. First 5th and. Oh so delicious, going for 2 more tomorrow.

@@pmc1727 Fair point!!
Very interesting video. But I really think they changed something in their whisky. I'm somewhat new to whiskey and bought a bottle of Monkey Shoulder in March-ish at your recommendation. Really strong grain funk as I was immediately overpowered by the smell and taste of feet. Bought another bottle 2 weeks ago to try it again and much less funk & more fruit and honey.
So roughly 5% difference on the "flavor drift" from a few years.. what do u estimate the flavor drift of bottles release at the same time? (Basically do u think if u bought 2 bottles at the same time from a *not huge brand* could u taste a subtle difference?)
Question for yall. What are the names of the whiskies over Daniel's sholder with the green, orange and red splotches on the front?
It was bugging me the whole video. 🤣
Have you guys done a episode where you try to blend your own budget blended whiskey? A brand that tells you what’s in it like monkey shoulder?
Wait, I thought the white wrapping on the bottle neck is older than the "new" dark wrapping. so you got them mixed up. the one you refer to as "new" has the label they started using in 2015 (the white one). the dark label is from 2020
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you're right. I remember I was googling the bottle with the dard wrapper couple weeks ago, when it appeared on shop shelves.
I believe you're correct. I work in a liquor store that sells Monkey Shoulder, and just half a year ago we were selling the white top. Couple weeks ago we got the ones with the dark top.
@@dest1ny690 same here, work at 2 bottle shops in Australia and the black top monkey shoulder only appeared 6 months ago
In Indiana, the white top/label is what’s currently sold... not the black
@@jessiewhite7783 probably old stock. Look for a code on the bottle. Below the main label
In relation to flavor drift experiments...Have you ever really loved a whiskey then come back to it and disliked it because of the change of flavors? Like what drifted was what made it unique or special?
5:18 HAHAHA...after Daniel finished his little jig, Rex is like, "Oh, man, here we go. I have a headache now." 😆🤣
Another whiskey for flavor drift could be the 2019 WT 101 vs 2020 or 2018. I noticed a large difference between 2019 and 2020.
Fascinating video. I wonder how an old Laphroaig will taste up against a modern one. I swear it tastes way different
Just bought my first bottle of this, looking forward to breaking the seal. Does the distiller (or any distiller) add anything to cause the citrus nose (aromatics, etc) or is it just an outcome of part of their process?
Adding concentrate flavorings is considered pretty sinful among whiskey. Which is why fireball is generally looked down on.
So most likely, the citrus is from the blend
The live action Cinderella starring Brandi and Whitney Houston. I remember that from 25 years ago.
Do Henry Mckenna 10 Year next for flavo[u]r drift. Because it disappeared for a long time after y'all review and now it is pretty accessible (at least in my area).
Love the Flavour Drift series! I think revisiting more old whisky reviews to see how your opinions of them have changed would also be cool. I recently tried Rowan's Creek (wasn't a big fan) and I went back and watched the Vault review. It was only episode 42 and you guys were almost offended by it until you added water. I'd be curious if it would hit you two the same way now.
Thinking about the vintage date idea. I wonder if they were to follow the same protocol as the age statement (whiskeys are at least as old as the declared statement). Call it a 2015, knowing they could also be some 2002, 1999, etc. in it. Or, just keep the vintage dates to single barrel options? Love this vintage date idea.
5:20 I legit threw my phone on the table and went into another room and screamed. Cinderella was the first musical I worked sound for (with supposition) and it was a shit show. It also Kickstart my 2020. Thanks Daniel
I’ve never tried this Whiskey but I would love to give it a go.
I think Daniel should sing and dance in every video!
Bought a fresh bottle of monkey shoulder today and was super excited for it. Unfortunately I burnt the shit out of my mouth before I had a chance to and now I can’t taste anything...
My Monkey Shoulder doesn’t last long enough to compare! By far my favorite!

Monkey Shoulder Flavor drift...... This sounds like a terrible medical problem that can be only be fixed by chiropractic visits and blue emu
@Johny Blaze okkkkk fun dip
You’re not too far off the mark actually. The name “monkey shoulder” was originally a shoulder issue that many distillery workers developed, causing the arm to hang down like a monkeys- hence the name. The whiskey takes its name from that.
Thanks for the "[U]"... from Canada! Lol!
