  • This video shows how I store and organize my Distress Inks and Distress Oxide Inks with the update that when I contacted Ranger they recommended storing Distress Oxide Inks flat not on their sides.

Thank you for doing all the work on finding out the best way to store our new Oxide inks. One of the stamping "guru's" just had a video advocating storing them on their sides. When mine were shipped to me, some of them were placed, or wound up on their sides, and it was very clear that the Oxide inks do pool towards that side. I got them all cleaned up, and make it a point to store them flat. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I think many people are confused because I have seen videos where Tim Holtz himself says you can store them on their sides, but I've heard stories of them leaking that way. I had to ask the source for my own piece of mind. I like these inks too much to risk ruining them.

I store my ink sponges on the back of my ink pads with velcro, too! Like you, I noticed the Ranger sponges fit perfectly behind the small distress ink pads. I found some small velcro circles at Dollar Tree, bought two packs and put one circle on the back of each of my distress oxide pads and my large distress ink pads. It works so well I went back and bought 4 more packages of the velcro to use on my other brands of ink pads! 😄 It is SO cool to see a UA-camr who does this!

@@JessCrafts Now if I could only find an ink pad storage method that works for me. I love yours, but I have to be able to see all of my supply options easily or else I find I don't use them. Lol! Maybe a bigger craft room would help? Hmmm...pretty sure my hubby would veto.
      Thanks for your inspiration!

I do this with the velcro circles from Dollar Tree, as well! I use them for my Distress Oxides and Distress Inks and other inks I have. I have a few Stampin' Up Inks and I store the sponges directly inside of the ink pad. I also need to see my supplies or I don't use them. I use tons of clear containers, but found the Best Craft Organizer - Swivel Traveler Ink Pad Storage for about $15 at a garage sale! (Link below if you want to see what it looks like.) Mine came together as a tower, but I removed the base and stacked each side next to one another on my desk. It holds ALL of my Distress Oxides and other large ink pads, my foam blenders and extra sponges. I have the small Distress Inks and store them in a clear drawer on my desk. LOOOOOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!
I also label each with my label maker, but I swatch each color on white sticker paper then use the name label over the top.

A simpler way to Velcro them to the back is to use the velcro from the 3M Command damage free wall hooks. It has adhesive on the back and it will not come off the back of the pad. I've used that from the beginning and I've never had any issues with it not sticking. I just buy the refill packs (no hook included) and cut a half inch off each time I need one. I get about 7 pieces off of 1strip and I think you get 10 to a pack. Then you don't have to mess around with any glue. 😊

Thanks for the great tips, Jess! I use the adhesive-backed Velcro dots for my blending foams. I found, though, that the ink could soak into the label on the back of the ink pad from the foam (I suppose if I got the foam pad extra "juicy"), which would cause the label, and the Velcro dot that was adhered to it, to peel off. So I have taken to "laminating" the label on the back/underside of the ink pad with packing tape. Then I just stick the blending foam to that. Never had a problem with the Velcro, or label, peeling off that way. Just a tip, in case someone doesn't want to use Super Glue. Anyway, thank you again for this video! :)

I have every color of the Distress Oxide inks and I store them flat in one of those plastic 11x11 containers you can buy at Michaels, Joann etc. I printed a chart from the website that has a little square with the name of the ink at the bottom of each square. (each color is listed including the newest ones). Then I took a little piece of a cotton ball and put a sample of the ink on each corresponding square. I numbered each square and put that number the top of the ink pad also with a magic marker. I stacked them in the container with the color chart on top. Then I can look at the chart to find the color I want, then find the ink pad by the corresponding number. Works great as long as you remember to keep in ink pads in order by number in the plastic container.

Some of my Oxides looked like the ink had pooled on the side after being shipped, so it would definitely be an issue. Right now they're stored in an Organize More unit. They make one specific for Distress inks, but mine is the regular sized inkpad storage unit, I bought the inexpensive spacers they offer for the Distress pads (basically cardboard you put in the back of the slot so the inkpads don't go too far in, since they're shorter) so both my regular inkpads and Distress inkpads live in the same unit. I learned about them from Jennifer McGuire. I hung my unit on the wall. Thank you for this video.

Thank you Jess. I love the Distress Oxide inks, but they are an investment, so I want to take good care of them. I only have the mini size of the other Distress inks as I don't use them as much. The little storage tins are great for them and the round blending sponges fit in the back without Velcro , works for me! Love your videos, always informative and fun👍👍👍

I'm glad I found this video. I had already decided to stack my Oxides on a shelf but learned that they should be on flat their bases. I thought they should be upside down so now I know not to do that. I have put the sponges on the back but they are fatter and don't sit well but are good enough.

I have all of the original Distress Inks as well as all of the Distress Oxide Inks that have been released so far. I use two drawers of an Alex cabinet like yours to store them. They are stored flat with the blending foam attached at the back with velcro. When a layer is full I just stack them. Yes, the Distress Oxide Inks do leave a circle of color on the one below, but that doesn't bother me. I've never stacked any of my inks, regardless of brand, on their sides. Thanks for making this video. It reaffirms my own conclusions about these terrific inks,

I noticed that you have the pads attached to the bottom as I do, and I just wanted to pass along that I noticed the pad tends to stay 'wet' after being used & I had them sitting on scrap paper to protect my desk surface from being stained by the ink. Thanks again for the info & happy 'carding'.

Hi Jess, Just found your video. It’s certainly still relevant, and happy I’ve found it. I’ve been storing my oxides on their side, and just today noticed my Evergreen Bough ink had separated! Wish I had discovered your video earlier, but at least I can reink any others that may have separated. I honestly didn’t think through the difference in viscosity and density between pigment and dye ink. Now looking at my reinkers I can easily see the separation. I just want to confirm to any doubters out there, your research has been proven to be spot on accurate! Store oxide inks flat!
Hope your home all is back to normal. Although there’s some things lost that can never be replaced, thankfully sounds like no one was injured. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. 👍👍👍

How do you manage with keeping the lids on the inks when stored on their sides? Mine always fall off unless I store flat. Would greatly prefer on their sides though. Also....doesnt the ink from the foam pads velcroed to the cases make a mess on tge lid of the one behind it? I've not done it that way assuming there would be a mess. Love the minis cuz I could put the inky side into the bottom on the case, velcro side facing out, which also let me just poke my blender tool onto them and they were locked and loaded without me touching them! Lol. But nit so easy with the full-sized pads. I've upgraded to all large ones now and miss that. Any suggestions? I love your channel, your videos, knowledge, research, and fun! Keep up the great work! You are appreciated!

    • @JessCrafts
      @JessCrafts  7 років тому +1

Thank you for your kind words. I think my lids may stay on more easily because they are packed with only a bit of room between them. I don't find the foam on the original distress inks make much of a mess on the lids of the ones next to it but it definitely would with the oxides. The oxide ink doesn't seem to dry on the foam so it's a bit messier in general. Looking at them there is a bit of excess ink on most of my regular Distress Ink lids but it's never bothered me. I didn't even realize it was there until I looked. I would look into a system that separates each ink on it's own shelf or divider I guess. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I store my regular inks flat, upside down, stacked 6 deep in shoebox size box. I store my oxides flat, cover side up same way. I have blending pads for each color, individually stored in zip lock plastic bag, used for jewelry/beads, 1” x 2” with label for color. I keep all those together in 1 large ziplock bag. Ideally I would like to find a box that I could store the blending pads vertically, separated by color family with tabbed dividers.

Although I’ve been a Stamper forever, I am new to distress inks. I’ve just started with a few of both the oxide and regular. I’m sure this seems like a dumb question, but I’ve always stored my ink pads upside down to keep the ink at the surface of the pad. Does it make a difference with these pads?

    • @JessCrafts
      @JessCrafts  5 років тому

I have heard that is a good way to store inks but I don't personally store them that way. I store my oxides face up and they always stamp well.

You have them labeled on the side, or end so you could stack them and one glance you could see what the colors are, then I see you went to your drawers, like that system also.

I heard Tim himself say that the Distress Ink (regular) is ok to dip into the Oxide on accident, but don't put the blender from the Oxide into the Regular (the pigment is what'll mess up the regular ink pad). I have one pad per color, but 1 blender TOOL (and 1 extra made from some other stamp thingy). I always store my inks (all) flat.

FYI, information I received today (05/11/2020) from Ranger when I inquired about their new Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pad Storage Tin that they state on their website can be used to store both the Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pads and Distress Oxide® Ink Pads. I wrote them because the Tim Holtz Distress® Ink Pad Storage Tin stores them on their side.
Apparently they can indeed be used for the Oxide Inks (YEAH!)

Thank you for contacting us. I understand your concern regarding ink pad storage.
Tim recently addressed these concerns in his latest Facebook Live Q&A demo.
Throughout the years we are always learning and growing. When we launched oxides we did suggest storing them flat but have learned that in reality the ink pads could be stored on the sides just like the regular Distress Ink pads without a problem. I understand the confusion but I hope this helps clarify. As with any new product that comes to market, we are always learning and developing new ways to use the products, techniques and of course storage.
I hope this helps. Best, Kelly

If you worry about settling pigments, you should rotate their orientation. So storing them on the side and turn them frequently is better than have the pigment settling at the bottom.

I think Ranger has since said it doesn't matter in they are flat but I haven't personally contacted them again. I think it may be a climate thing. I've lived in a dry climate and a humid climate and it does seem to effect art and craft supplies. So it may not matter to some. Definitely keep those lids on tight if you live in a dry place.

I’ll just store the tin on its side. Seems like laying them flat makes more sense. You would think they would include some sort of instructions on the ink pad, but I guess they want us buying more. I do love the oxide inks tho, and never was really happy with the original Distress ink pads. I may just sell those.

I also contacted Ranger and received the following reply that contradicts your information in this video. Looks like 2 different employees of Ranger have two different ideas about storage. Here is my email response from them...
Distress Oxide Ink Pads can be stored on the side or facing up (no need to store them upside down).
Also I asked about cleaning distress oxide from stamps:
Thank you for your email and interest in Ranger products!
Distress Oxide Ink can be cleaned from rubber stamps with Ranger Water-Based Stamp Cleaner (rangerink.com/?product=inkssentials%E2%84%A2-water-based-scented-spray-cleaner), and Ranger Clear Stamp Cleaner for clear stamps (rangerink.com/?product=inkssentials%E2%84%A2-clear-stamp-cleaner). Some warm, soapy water will also do the job if stamps are cleaned immediately after use.

Thanks for sharing! I have heard of some people who had leaking when storing them on their side and I experienced it a bit myself but sometimes ink and other crafty materials are effected by climate. So everybody should definitely do what works for them and keep an eye on investments like these inks to discover the best solution for them.
