Happy Thursday, all! I finally have my hands on the new Tim Holtz Distress Oxide inks and I played with them a bit. I'm glad I had my camera recording when I was playing because I loved the results! This is my first time trying out Distress Oxide inks. :)
Basically, I started out by creating a watercolor background using a plastic sandwich bag. I smooshed the ink pads onto the bag, sprayed it with water until the ink beaded up, and then placed my watercolor paper down onto the bag (face side down). I then flipped it over and used my fingers to press and move the watery ink below the sandwich bag. I removed the bag and dried the background.
For the emboss resist, I stamped the large stripes from Concord & 9th's Stripe Builder stamp set in VersaMark ink, applied clear embossing powder, and then heat set it. Then I repeated the sandwich bag smooshing with more Distress Oxide ink. Because the clear embossed stripes protected the first layer of color, I was left with a stripe pattern with lots of color.
Because I loved the background so much, I kept the rest of the card design very simple. I added some stacked diecuts cut using Paper Smooches Mr & Mrs die, a small stamped "congrats" from the New Beginnings stamp set, and then some scattered sequins from Darice (Crystal sequins in 8mm and 5mm).
I hope you love today's card. I love how the background turned out. To recreate a background using this technique I recommend using very solid stamps or background stamps. You want large areas of the first layer to be protected by the clear embossing.

I discovered that using old piece of cotton clothing like worn out pajamas instead of paper towels is much better. They soak up much better, they don't shed or tear, they can be washed, and if they get too dirty I just toss them in the garbage since that's where they were going anyway. And paper towels are horrible for the environment.

my mom actually saves up old bedsheets to cut up for using them for dusting so I cut a piece out of them as big as I want when I need and it works out just well too and I use it how I would use a piece of paper towel when I paint with watercolors

Love the background you created, Kristina! A variation--if you don't mind waiting for a while--would be to leave the plastic in place on the watercolor paper until the ink dries. That gives something of a neat marbled effect. Obviously, though, you couldn't heat set it to dry. Great choice of colors--tfs! :)

No, Oxide inks have their own look. They behave somewhat like Distress inks, but these are creamy and you can stamp with them on dark surfaces. Tim Holtz has a video here on UA-cam where he shows the differences.

hi, do you (or anyone reading this) know of any stamp companies that do Mr&Mr or Mrs&Mrs stamps, some of my good friends are getting married soon and it would be awesome if I could make them a card.

The only problem with this technique is when doing the "smooshing" with the ink and water, it really warps the paper in the drying process.

My paper wasn't too warped. If you're worried about that, you could tape the paper down and carefully flip the sandwich bag over. I've done that in the past, too.

Could you make a video that compare distress ink & oxide? Your voice is so soothing and I love your videos!!

Evan Xin Er Hong Jennifer McGuire has done this already if you watch her stuff. Basically the oxide has pigment innit so you can stamp on black and other dark coloured papers whereas regular distressed doesn't show up as they are dye based. Plus oxide colours 'pop' as you saw when they are exposed to water. That's pretty much it. I'm glad I didn't invest in distressed as oxide as more options. Looking forward to more colours coming out like distressed!

Constellation27 You have to dry the paper with a heat tool on the front and back and that will flatten the card stock almost flat. When you adhere the card to the card base, just be sure to use plenty of adhesive.
