This is the best and clearest video I have seen on the advantages of distress oxides. I only had a few of the distress inks when I discovered the oxides, and quickly decided to invest in the oxides because of the effect and diversity. You have clarified why I find them so wonderful to work with and I now get the difference the glazes make. I also love the Versafine Claire inks and now work with both most of the time for both art journaling, cards and anything that strikes my fancy. Thank so much!

Apart from a few fav colours that I have in both (a mixture of bright and muted tones), it depends on the colours/shades for me. I prefer the standard inks for some colours because of the intensity isn't the same in the oxide, and oxide inks for some of the other muted tones because the softness work so well how muted they are.
The first oxides I bought were Vintage Photo, Broken China and Peeled Paint and whilst I use them, I'm not overly keen on them as I prefer the 'brightness' of the normal inks in those colours. After these ones, it took me quite a long time to get any others but once I realised the above, I was able to get on better with them and make the right choices.

Thanks so much @Laurel Beard. I invested significantly in the Distress Oxide Sprays and it's taken me quite a while to learn how to use them. The amount of times I've had buyers remorse along the way is funny now I'm over that hump. I learn some new way to use them all the time. I trip upon a new way almost every session. What I love in addition to the chalkiness, is they have multidimensional colours when water enters the stage as we saw here with your Cracked Sapphire. Fossilised Amber, Aged Mahogany, Frayed Burlap are a few more that come to mind that produce stunning results too.

0:25 Can I say I have just discovered your channel. I am laid up with a sprained ankle and I am binge watching you! Absolutely fantastic!!! I would consider myself as an intermediate/advanced paper crafter but you have given me so many new ideas to try- I’m going to hobble to my craft room this afternoon and give some of your ideas a try.
I am the sort of person you have described in one of your videos, who knee-jerk buys- things I really do not need, and who, a couple of months later, after not even getting the item/s out of their packaging, can’t remember what to do with it! Gel plates being a classic example. NO MORE!!! I will be using what I already possess to create cards I would never have thought possible! I will save an absolute fortune! I have recently started running card making workshops for folk in our village and the surrounding areas. The ideas you have provided me will be such a boon- I think I’ll give the shaving foam technique a miss for them though!! The ladies (the workshops are open to men too but have had no takers as yet!) are bad enough with glitter and sequins !!
So thank you, Laurel. You are the first paper crafter on UA-cam who ticks all my boxes- telling it as it is, with such humour. You don’t try to hard sell materials, like some presenters do, but I do realise you need sponsors. Even with these, you strike the right balance.
I would have pm’d you with this but couldn’t see how! So sorry to everyone else who might be reading this! Didn’t mean to bore you!
Keep it up, Laurel, and have a wonderful, successful 2023.
    Stay safe.

I just had to reply, so much of what you wrote hit me... Recently, as I was going through my humongous stash of supplies, I was astonished at the amount of stuff I have bought and never used!!! I don't do impulse buying as much anymore.
I also gave my first class Tuesday to the seniors in my building, and while I had a good time, as did they, I already see that I have to do things a little differently next time.
They mixed the balloons with the butterflies and die cuts, even though I had everything organized.😅
I was not happy about it, so I just put everything back in the storage folders and I'm trying to see how I can do things without getting stressed out or hurt anyone's feelings.
It's my way of giving back as well as bringing a little joy to them. I have so much stuff that I decided to not charge for my supplies or time. So I have to tread lightly, because some people are easily offended.
Keep up the good work! 🙏🏾

Interesting! I had a hard time deciding what to do. I love that the distress oxides blend so much easier than the distress inks, yet I prefer the vibrancy of the distress inks to the oxides. I totally agree that you do not need both, nor do you need every single colour of the rainbow. When a colour release comes out that I really like it's frustrating deciding whether to get the oxide or ink. Always a battle. I never buy both. .... and yes, I too got rid of all "minis". Too dainty for me! Another great video! Merry Christmas!

  • @athenamay30

Oxides are a fusion of dye and white pigment inks. Try mixing them to make distress oxide sprays. Distress inks, otoh, are just dye inks with glycerine to help in making it more mixable/blendable. Both have their uses. I have tried ink blending with just dye inks and without the proper tool it was just too difficult. Thus, I'll be keeping my distress inks. But I agree with you -- distress oxides are the bomb.

It took me a long time to start buying the distress inks, and have never bought the oxides. Too pricey altogether on a state pension. Now Ranger is flogging yet another "must have" product by way of glazes..
I decided to try a white pigment ink as a base for my inks, and I like the effect, especially on Kraft or dark card.

Oxides are my desert island inks. Choice between Oxides and all other ink? Oxides, as long as blacks/darks for fine sentiments can stay. I have a lot of ink brands.
Blending is like butter and looks velvety. I love putting down one color and another color on top, then with a stencil using a baby wipe to lift off the top color through the holes, leaving the bottom color. You need layers of ink and I always blend rather than swipe the pad. Oxides can be bright and cheerful. Drying time hasn’t been an issue. And wonderful for a million techniques.
OTOH, not the biggest fan of CP inks though I really wanted to be, though others love them which is great. (I have some and use them.) As they say, one size does not fit all. BTW, I don’t use much regular Distress though sometimes do with Oxides to add depth since regular Distress is transparent, or put a little Walnut Stain on top of the opaque Oxide for a vintage look.

    • @99zanne

Do u mind telling me why CP inks r not a fav? I’m wondering about the CP inks, the SSS inks, and Altenew ones. I have distress, oxide, good bit of Hero Arts, PTI inks, Adirondack inks, Versafine Clair, and some of Ranger’s archival inks and Staz On inks for nonreactive stamping. I heard someone talking about the vibrancy of the CP ones and I wondered if they stamp more evenly than what I have and if they r brighter in color than what I’m using. (I’m pretty sure all 3 have to be less moody than Adirondack!! But I have been stamping since 1991.) TIA.

    • @bethjeans3780
      @bethjeans3780 Рік тому +1

@@99zanneI “had” to have one Adirondack color-that I’ve never used. lol Don’t let what I say put you off of CP inks. That was just an example of which is best, chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. (Vanilla.)
I think CP inks are high quality and vibrant, clear rather than toned down. The mini’s are a great size. The pads are foam, maybe softer than Concord & 9ths foam pads. (Some C&9 minis were included in an event kit.) Customer service is outstanding.
The pads need to be re-inked fairly often and after re-inking they can be too juicy, though I try to have a light hand. The mini sets contain a couple colors I wouldn’t use, and minis can’t be purchased separately other than black and brown. They don’t have light/medium/darks of a color, which I like in SSS’s newer Pawsitively Saturated inks (different from their other inks) and IO’s inks. And I simply prefer felt, though I’m used to foam, starting back with Studio Calico’s pads. In your shoes I’d buy a pad or two or a mini set to see if they’re your jam. And if you love vibrant they well may be.

    • @michellemybelle22
      @michellemybelle22 Рік тому

I’ve tried a lot of brands and I like the CP dye inks best of this variety. They are juicy and vibrant. I buy the minis which aren’t really that small. If I love a color I get the big one.

First of all... your hubs is my kind o guy! Dunkin the cookies in the red wine. Double win! 😂🍷🍪. I might’ve giggled at that. Secondly...I’ve got both oxides and distress...and when I first started...of course it was regular distress. But I’ve got ALL the oxides and very seldom use the regular unless I want deeper color. I do like them both but my go to are the Oxides. I would love some CP inks, but they’re a bit pricey for me. So mainly...I use the Oxides...some VersaClaire inks.... have a few Gina K and HA (from kits). I don’t think you need all the brands either. Find what you like and stick with it. Thanks for bringing your opinion and info to so many who are trying to make a decision! Love the honesty! Have a very Merry Christmas! 💕🎄🌴

I have more distress minis than oxides. I love colors I have, but I don't have anywhere near the full sets. I use them differently and can't imagine eliminating the regular distress for the oxides.

I find myself using the oxides more but have so many reg distress have to find someone to give them to love how you said I’m not a store and found the inks you like and that’s it genius Can you use the reg distress inks with the oxides?? Must give that a try. Thank you for the download

No white pigment ink, Laurel? It makes a good basecoat (heat set) under dye based ink on darker cardstocks. Nice for shadow effects, too.

I prefer Distress minis rather than full size and occasionally use with Oxides. So much depends on the type and the look of the projects a card maker likes, right? I think the issue may also be seeing examples and tutorials of using both together in a style that resonates.
I was extremely lucky. When the first twelve Oxides came out, a teacher came to a local stamp shop and taught an in-depth class with a handout, including a project combining regular Distress with Oxides to give a delicate (not grunged) softened or aged look with regular Distress on top of a bright Oxide pink/yellow/orange combo. Transparent on top of opaque.

According to the download the chalky finish of oxides is a con not a pro ! Really . It’s one of the things that’s good not bad about them . Unique .

Yes but some people don't like the look. Which is why it can be a con to some

Well, this is disturbing. I got these new Distress Oxides as they were put out on the shelves at a busy craft store and got home with them. I couldn't wait to use them. I was disappointed because they didn't seem to show up. I think they were dry from the start now. I guess I'll buy the inks to juice them up. I was just thinking they were not colorful.

I pay $16 a month to not have commercials and you insert a commercial anyway.
