How To Fix Sagging Headliner using Spray Adhesive
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- In this video, I want to show you the typical method of fixing a sagging headliner in a vehicle. I will be using a special can of spray-on headliner adhesive, and then pressing the headliner evenly back in place, being careful to avoid wrinkles.
This fix only applies to a headliner that is detached and sagging at the edge of the material. Falling headliners must be fixed in another way not described in this video.
Remember: It is a good idea to spray both the cloth material and the roof surface. The two surfaces will have a better bond when they have both been prepped with a few coats of the adhesive.
I didn't mention it in the video, but some people prefer to use a special roller to press the headliner material in place, whereas I am using my hands.

Here’s a tip for you. Hot glue a syringe tip onto the spray nozzle and you can stick it through the headliner to do the entire middle of the roof as well! Keep the syringe cap and you can use that for storage
dude, f-ing genius.
So then I wouldn’t have to remove the headliner at all?
THIS needs to be a video
Yes!!! Video PLEASE!!!
Absolute legend!!!
I used 3M Headliner Adhesive and it worked fine. I wore eye protection and rubber gloves. The trick is definitely letting it dry a few minutes. I was hasty to try adhering the headliner soon after spraying it definitely soaked through a small spot. After no more than 5 minutes, I could tell it was no longer wet, and I had no trouble smoothing the fabric over the foam base with very little if any wrinkling. It doesn't look perfect but for 15 old material it's not bad. Be sure to lay a cover underneath the work area to protect from splattering. Also I watched another video demonstrating this and the guy had splattered adhesive all over his rear window. What a mess! The best solution I found for that is stick Saran Wrap to it all the way to the edge all the way around because the glue will splatter.
Thanks for the tips
Nice video. Grabbing a can tomorrow
Prep es muy importante!
Yeah this came out pretty good, I got an 85 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. So the headliner is sagging more in the middle, so I got to try a different way to do it. I still got a couple cans of that headliner adhesive too though.😕🙂🤓🤠😎😏👍✌️👋💪🌾🍀🌿🍃🇺🇸
Bgrant. I have older cars, Im going to bet any thin stretchy material will work. My Dodge daytona headliner was junk. My fix was to scrape all soft foam off and carefully painted headliner using Grey primer. It was bit shaggy like leather swede.
@@mike289homebuilt5 I'm going to try this adhesive and see how it works. Hopefully it's not too challenging though. It looks pretty simple.
Great video! This helped me a ton! Thanks for posting this!
So whats the name of that spray? Sorry im from a primitive country need to import one
excellent instruction
What do you do if it says again weeks or months later after using it?
Nice job bro, this was very helpful
Ty 4 video
$25 a can?! Sheesh!
Simple , descriptive , and right to the point . Thanks!
Use a bank card to prevent creases getting in the material
I used an ice scraper to prevent creases
This looks so much more manageable than the last method I watched. I may put plastic on the windshield and dash to be safe.
Exactly what I needed for my Explorer with the same issue, same sides too. thanks for a great video.
Update: I purchased the spray adhesive, applied to the sagging headliners and I'm very happy with the results, car looks much better. The process was easier than I thought it would be, follow the instructions in the video. Highly recommended 😃
@@aeiq1219I’m bout to do the same
Dude, you rock. Thanks a bunch for the wonderful video. It was very easy to follow along. 👍🏾
The contacting surface on the headliner and the fabric needs to be prepped before sprayingYou prep the surfaces by using
a soft toothbrush to gently remove the foam dust off the inside of the fabric and then gently brush (only) the topical dust off the foam side of theheadliner itself. Once both contacting sides are free of this dust, it is ready to spray.
Well Brother, your video was the most helpful of all the ones I've watched. Thx
My 2013 Avalon is sagging in the back, gonna be a pain in the butt with all the leather I gotta cover up
How can avoid the bond from showing threw the headliner once I stick it to the roof, excuse my language but like an old jizz stain
Get away from the highway, too much noise.
Hi this is such an old video not sure if you will reply, i bought Spray idea 99 do you think that will work for my car's sagging roof liner?
FINALLY!! A Permatex tutorial that's not elementary!
Thanks!
Do I have to clean off some of the existing foam?
If the foam is attached leave it alone. If it’s falling off when touched, I’d remove it the best you can.
Remove the roof lining and backboard
Wash roof lining fabric in cold water and peg flat to dry .remove all the old glue and foam replace foam with 5ml foam backing and lay over dry clean flat surface spray light and even coat of contact glue on foam and fabric let dry to tacky and stick together making sure fabric is not strechted . spray backing board and foam and fabric layer and join together using a roller to smooth out and doing half at a time put chalk marks on fabric and board to align propely take your time and you will ha e a satisfying clean oem roof liner
What's the name of the spray?
Overkill
My explorer started sagging in the same exact place
Same
how long it will last (sticking together between roof and hardliner fabric?it's look very easy to be done.bravo
Not only is it a good instruction vid but definitely nice that you had a cameraman as well. Thanks for the time and effort. This is my chore for today
Use a old sheet. Or dust sheet orpuut car seat covers on your seats.loads of things to do to cover and protect your interior car.drop sheets .
Nicely done! Thanks for taking the time to do the video. I've read a few comments where people are running into staining issues. I believe that comes from applying too much in the same place at the same time. If everyone would use short (light press on the nozzle) strokes, like I saw when you shot the left side, the results will be better. Don't get the fabric "wet". Start with a clean nozzle. Practice application strokes on a piece of cardboard.
Yep and also they may have not shaken the can enough
I did exactly the same . once i put both parts together the glue went through the headliner and left a white stain on it. It doesn look good at all. Dnt buy this product .
It sounds to me like you didn't wait 5 minutes for it to dry before you pushed it back together. I could be wrong - or you applied too much spray and let it saturate.
Hi, looks easy. Does this glue leave stains on roof liner?
I have the pretty much the same vehicle (05 Ford Explorer) and the same exact problem! I wasn’t sure what to do! This video helped me soooo much. Thank you! Thank you! ☺️☺️☺️☺️
An explorer is no where near a Yukon. Different shelf they sit on. (:p
I know this video is old, but I wanted to say "thank you." My car just started getting bad and I wasn't sure how to do this (the proper way), so this helped me IMMENSELY. It looks just as it did before it started sagging. Again... Thank you!
It's very important to know if your headliners has molds on it before u start spraying. If your headliner has mold, it is better to get a new one and then use the adhesive headliner spray to make it stick nicely. Spay copious amount so that u won't have a sagging problems in the future.
Is this as good or better than Gorilla Glue, for a hairspray substitute. asking for a friend*
It's best to use what it's Recommended,, but who knows?🙈 Gorilla glue🙆♂️
Don't do this. It will fail in two days. If you want it to hold and you don't care about aesthetics then us twist pins for upholstery. Do not use glue. It will quickly fail. This is why I never buy flipped cars.
Can the adhesive withstand hot temperatures cause if not the clue will soften up again and it will come loose again
Get the 3M 90 spray. It can withstand 160 degrees. I have the same SUV as in the video and it worked great.
Jacob Wiechmann Okay thanks
@@jacobwiechmann8665 This product he features has a 170 degree temp rating. I'm on Amazon now.
Thanks heaps - saved my stress levels 👍
So what exactly causes the sagging, the old glue wears out or the backing, or both? If the backing is crumbling, you need to replace the entire headliner, right?
Both. Mine started sagging in similar spots. I believe it's because of the heat from the sun drying out the backing and glue. This seems to be a quick fix for the short term. Eventually if it all begins to sag then it might be time to replace the whole thing. Not worth it in my case bc the car is so old haha
Also windshield leaking.
@@sunshine3914
Put clear sealant (on the outside of car) where water leaks in from edge of windscreen.
I did this .... I did a crappy job but it stopped the water leak.
It's an old bomb with rust so my rough job didn't matter.
so, what happens when the sagging occurs in the "middle," meaning there's not an edge to start with?
See Topher's comment. Worth a try.
Your screwed! That’s what happens. Lol
Thanks for the video. My suggestion; I hate wearing gloves, but I highly recommend wearing disposable gloves for this project.
Thank you so much for this video! This girly girl was struggling to get the adhesive to stick & about to just rip the entire headliner off. The problem was that I have a convertible with a retractable roof & didn't dare put the roof down fearing entanglement of the headliner. I found this video after purchasing another adhesive and your tip about waiting between coats made it an easy repair. It has a few wrinkles but so be it - I can see out the back window and put the roof down again. Thanks again!
Nothing like some hands on southern charm 🙃😋 but seriously very helpful.
At the end of the day, even though you're flipping it, you're using a good quality product and saving them from running into a place that's going to charge them $1k for a headliner.
I will give it a try. I ordered it with your amazon link!!!
excellent video, perfect describes what I was searching, clearly and well explained step by step.
fixing that head liner probably cost more than that pos vehicle was worth to begin with
This is exactly what I needed to see. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. I had no idea what to use or how to use this.
There is a brown spongy material on both the headliner fabric and also the ceiling of my car. Do I need to remove this spongy material or can I spray right on top of it ?
I am trying to avoid this same problem from spreading in my everyday driver. This seems simple. Thanks.
I have the exact same car and my headliner is sagging in the exact same spot and the only difference is mine is a 2003 Expedition
Thanks works great is it possible to take out Permatex Headliner glue got some on the out side fabric not a good look.
What about you kinda soke it up in the middle an hold its thair with somthing ? Will it hold
Δεν ξερω τι κανει σε εκεινο το κλιμα αλλα στην Ελλαδα κρατησε μονο ενα χειμωνα.Το καλοκαιρι ξεκολλησε παλι.
Thank guy for the tips
You titled is "sagging headliner" but you only showed fixing edges, not when it's sagging in the middle. Fixing edges isn't tough, How do you fix a sag?
Careful now, don’t think too hard, don’t want to break anything. It’s called sagging headliner because that’s what the headliner in this video is doing. Sagging. If you want a video about fixing headliner that sags in the middle, try using the keyword “middle.” In fact, I literally just searched “headliner sagging” without the keyword “middle,” and found a solution for you three videos down. I’m not going to tell you though, because I think this would be an awesome opportunity for you to learn how to look for things yourself. Happy hunting! :)
Answered every question.. thank you Justin!
Dude, Why do we literally have the same car and the same problem
Thanks. Just what we need. Easy peezy
WEAR GLOVES !! NICE VIDEO BRO
Exactly what I needed to watch. I appreciate the video.
Does it leave any stains or marks on the fabric
Plzzzz reply bro i need to know this
It does leave white stains on the headliner. The glue goes through the headliner and you r fucked. Trust me
Agreed. Listen to him. I read comments about it staining and said "Oh, that wont happen to me". Well, it did. It doesn't look too bad but my headliner had zero stains before in the backseat. Im pissed.
Thanks a bunch for this demo. My VW suv headliner is starting to come apart just inside left drivers side door. It's only about 10 inches, but this stop it from getting worse. I'm a crafter and have a drop cloth, etc... Ordering adhesive now. #whew
Senang buat
this is what i need to do for the volvo, only thing is the jobs alot bigger the whole headliner is close to off, where would you reccomend looking to find the best price on fixing a car headliner if its to big to be a DIY project?
This is a great time to find an "interior guy". You'll need to find someone who does interior upholstery repair, ideally at affordable prices. If you can find out who the local used car dealers are using, that's going to be who you want.
Otherwise, you could try finding a intact headliner at a junk yard.
Find an Automotive Reupholstery Store for the car trim reupholstery or Buy two to three cans spray adhesive. Sprayidea 30 high strength spray adhesive offers strong strength under long direct sunlight, low odor and with long term bonding. www.sprayidea.com/sprayidea-31-hi-strength-spray-adhesive.html
Sprayidea Cheap Chinese crap? No thanks.
Can I use a sound deadening material roller to seal the headliner?
How would you fix a car that is sagging in the middle?
You make a hole and with a cannister straw attached you spray in
Thanks because mines fell down in the back And my dumb self thought cleae gorllia glue will work but it didnt so now i gotta clean the glue off thanks alot for this video will be buying some today
I do see some crumbled, brownish stuff on the loose part of my headliner. Maybe that is old dried up original glue. Should the loose texture not be cleaned before this spray repair job?
Have the same question
Is there a risk it will darken the fabric at all, almost like a stain? What's the best way to avoid that?
Amazing and super helpful video; thank you for making it!!
Ah yes breathing in chemicals
maybe use some smooth plastic to wipe the spray onto the headliner material instead of spraying directly onto material?
I did mines, but it fell down the next day? I did it the same way you did yours. I’m I missing something ?
did just the fabric fall down? or some material with it? Did you give the spray time to "tack" and dry a bit before you put the fabric against it? Did you put enough glue? too much glue?
Smells like a serious carcinogen.
And BAM! Mark it up an extra grand!
This was a huge help
What is material glue?
Good video! Just ordered a can to fix the headliner in my Falcon (Same windscreen area as shown here.). Thanks.
Hi Justin!!! Good to see you out here. Thanks for the info
Not edge.....front middle area...
excellent!!! thanks
Perfect! Just the video for my problem! Thanks for both the visual and the tips!
You’re the man. Thanks bro
How about a section of sagging front area?
Hi Justin, thank you for your excellent video presentation. I am from Singapore and have similar headliner sagging problem . Can you be kind enough to tell me the brand of adhesive you use so that i can buy the right stuff. Where can you buy the spray? Thanks. have a good day.
Permatex.
Dude you rock. Thanks
Excellent Video,, excellent,,
Great video! This really helped
Thank You for the video Brother. Super helpful to me!
You did a good job on this video, thanks.
Thanks -- question: would a glue stick work?
Does it for a small and small area? If the answer is yes, it would work. But you don't want it falls down again after a period of time and then repeat the operation, a heat resistance spray adhesive would be better. www.sprayidea.com/sprayidea-97-heavy-duty-headliner-spray-adhesive.html
Thanks man!
Thanks
Very good info. Thx
What is your guesstimate on how long the spray adhesive will last? I have an 04 Chrysler town and country.
I think that would depend on where you park the car, and what your areas weather is like, since heat and cold both effect glues in general. I know someone who had switching heat and cold weather extremes, their fix lasted 3 years or so
Thanks!!
