Thank you Troy. My little Volvo suffers from 112* sun this last summer. The headliner above the drivers seat is falling down. I had the sunroof cracked open too. I have the visor pushed forward so I don't have to look at it. I'm going to fix it myself. I'm 68, and a grandmother of 7, but I'm going to try. I asked one of my sons to fix it for me and he said to look it up on UA-cam and fix it. So here I am. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video. Looks good. Here is a tip for others. If you follow instructions on the can to keep spray nozzles a foot or so away from surface, it then "spiderweb's" and is way taker and won't be as quick to saturate cloth. End result is less bleed thru spots.
Instead of tape and drape, I used Press and Seal (find on the grocery aisle with plastic wrap, wax paper and such). The bonus to me of using that was the ability to cover dome lights that I didn't want to remove to reattach the headliner.
I've got the exact same problem on my 2004 Silverado. Mine is hanging down on the driver's side by the door. Thanks a ton for the info on this. I can finally stop seeing this thing flapping in the wind. 🙂
I too used the 3M Headliner Adhesive as well. However, you need to let it try at least 5 minutes or it will soak through the fabric. I used plastic kitchen wrap to protect the window and plastic trash bags to protect the upholstery underneath. I was able to use my fingers to smooth out the fabric pretty well but the spoon is a nice touch.

Am I mind took headlining out of the car talking about 10 minutes and his girlfriend brushed all the loose foam off and glued material back on, it took like an hour and the whole thing was done. It didn't come back off and U had car for few years after fixing. I don't know why this video has random me come up for me to watch but anybody reading this comment it's very easy to take the headlining out of the car and glue it properly yourself. Cheers Graham
Thank you vary much, the auto detailing shop in my area told me to use a stapler, or they can charge me $349.00 to redo my entire headline in my 04 Cherokee, this looks like a much better fix.

Betcha the adhesive used for countertop install would work also... In My old Jeep, I've ironed on material using the by the yard adhesive found at the fabric store. It lasted for YEARS.
This is starting to happen on my 1999 dodge ram 1500. Same spot to, right above the visor front edge. Great info and video explaining what to do and to save money. Subbed
I used the same exact stuff, next morning same exact headliner issue. Even after I read all the directions on the back of the can; I also read the “IMPORTANT” column 5th line down, “ not recommended for unsupported vinyl fabric or headliners” And i also used the permanent bond instruction procedure. Used a bristle brush to remove any loose or deteriorated/expired foam from the headliner. Any extra extra help recommendation’s?
For anyone who's interested, in really bad cases, you can go "brute force" and remove the fabric altogether. I say brute force because it requires removing the entire ceiling. The ceiling foam on my old Chrysler Town and Country minivan was dissolving so badly nothing would stick to it. I mean, it would stick, but then the foam-along with wads of glue-would just crumble into the now sagging fabric and make an awful mess when the wind blew in. So... • I took out the ceiling and set it on a couple of sawhorses. (Harder than it seems. There are all kinds of electrical and AC connections up there.) • Brushed / scraped away every bit of foam. This left a fibrous kind of texture. Fine by me. • Spray painted it a nice flat gray to make it as inconspicuous as possible. (I considered doing a kind of Sistine chapel type thing, but nixed the idea.) • Reinstalled it. Boom done. I had the van for a good decade after that, and not one single person ever realized it should have had a fabric ceiling. Worked great, and no more crumbling foam worries.
Agreed with the term brute force! That is a big job. Hopefully most people find my video and fix theirs before that task is ever needed! This fix I did lasted 6 years before the drivers side started doing the same thing. I used this same fix on that side then sold the truck. I still see the truck over a year later and the headliner is still holding! Catch it soon enough and this fix is “permanent”.
Great video. Only trouble is we have Selley's spray adhesive (Bunnings Hardware) in Australia (Not Loctite) which is particularly unreliable for this application according to a review I read.
Honestly it's starting to come loose again, but only in a few small spots. I think I didn't get enough of the sticky stuff across both surfaces. I have one spot on the drivers side basically same location that's starting to come off as well now. Might be time to revisit this and fix both again.
You've inspired me, I'm gonna try this to fix my '04 Explorer that's sagging in the same spot. Question though: Any particular reason you went with a "general purpose" spray adhesive (the Loctite) vice using a dedicated headliner adhesive, such as 3M's 38808 Headliner and Fabric Adhesive? I'm no expert, just wondering.
Instead of doing it in a one time attempt, you should instead start from the internal area where it isn't adhered and work your to the edge, stretching it out as you work your way to the edge, also don't over apply the spray, you'll saturate the fabric and can end up allowing the subtance to surface which will compromise the material texture and feel, you want it 30% under the material if that makes semse
Thank yo so much; packing tape isn't working so well and my headliner is almost completely down, I can't even see out my back window. I wish I had seen this when it looked like your headliner.
You're so welcome! And yeah, getting it fixed before it becomes a huge issue is much easier. Hope people learn from your mistake. Thanks for taking time to comment.
Just be sure to let it "tack up" before you start pressing it all together. If the glue is still "wet" it will soak through. But won't stain the fabric either way. It's clear and doesn't change the color.
I wish I would have seen this video a couple of years ago. Now it's gotten quite a bit worse and is in an area where I would have to slice it open to get adhesive in there. I still might try it. I've been using tape and upholstery pins to hold it up.
@@troysgarage Not yet. It's still too cold here and I've been so busy with other stuff that I forgot all about it. Not in the van much now days. Thanks for the reminder.
I buy this spray adhesive in bulk. I use a lot of it. However I would NOT recommend it for a headliner. As the can says "strong initial tack". Strong at first then not so much.. It dries and becomes a powder unless you load a lot if it on. The instuctions says it is "more permant bond" if you use a heavy spray. The problem is also the way the headliner is made. It is a 1/8" foam that is heat bonded to the fabric. No glue in the headliner itsself. The fabric is heat fused to the foam. Once that heat bonded layer of foam starts to degrade and turns to dust the fabric breaks loose and falls away. If you spray glue onto a foam thats turning to dust it will pull layers of foam off one after the other. You can't glue to dust no matter how good your glue is. I once used a piece of fabric blanket material from Joanns fabrics. Basically a blanket with no foam. I used foam upholstery glue and glued it to the cleaned head shell. It never came off again. Heat bonded headliner fabric is junk. Try not to use it if possible. And use something like 3M 99 spray adhesive if you only want to do it once..
You say all that, however 3 years later when I sold the truck it was still holding strong. In fact I repaired the drivers side the same way almost a year before I sold the truck. I still see the truck every once in a while around town. Still going strong with well over 310k miles.
I bought new headliner material and removed my headliner and removed the old fabric and foam. I purchased the 3M super 77 adhesive for fabric. Applied it to the headliner board and to the back of the fabric and let it tack up. Re installed head liner and two days later its sagging now. What should I do to fix this?
Any ideas about how to go about it if I don't have access to the surface under the headliner? Mine is just a round spot hanging down right above the passenger's head.
Just this spring it has begun to pull away again. The repair lasted for several years. I have one more spot on the drivers side doing the same thing. I’m going to hit both sides again and hope for several more years before it needs it again. 🙌🏼🕺🏼
I sold the truck last month, but it was still holding strong when I let it go. I did the same repair above the drivers side about 6 months ago. Just as easy to apply and I'm confident it will hold for the new owner for a long time. The key is catching it early before it gets away from the edge. That's a much harder fix!
What about if your headliner is falling down everywhere almost and stained with the brown nasty sticky stuff cause of my 5 year old autistic son that loves to mess with everything and is a terrorizer smh lol! So how to get the stains off of it after or before putting it back on?
Sounds like a total replacement is needed for yours. Sorry that's not more helpful but if it's destroyed there's not much you can do. Gotta catch it early.
Hi Troy… I just saw your video and it’s November 3rd 2022.. I need to repair my headliner as well as the side door vinyl. The passenger door vinyl has suddenly become loose at the free edge part of the door. It is loose all the way to the window handles. The vehicle is a 2001 Beetle.. she has seen better days but i refuse to let her go. She still gets me around town and I just have had her so long that i can’t give up on her. She has some issues that i am working on but i want to try to repair the inside things myself. Do you think the same method will work for the door vinyl? My fabric is very loose also in my headliner but i’m gonna try what you suggest. Should i buy a different spray adhesive for the vinyl part on the door? Thank you for any suggestions.. Lisa ( you might not even see my comment because this is an older video but i’m giving it a shot anyway) I have nobody to help me fix it but myself so i’m doing this so my poor little beetle looks better.. i know i must sound nuts but that car has been with me over 20 years and i can’t imagine her ending up in a junk yard.. she isn’t worth anything to anyone but to me she is my car and a part of my life for so long.. she needs to be pretty inside !
The same adhesive spray will work for both. Just spray both surfaces and let it dry enough to get tacky to the touch, then press them together. They should grab and hold right away. The fumes can be a little strong so be in a well ventilated area and try not to directly breath the fumes. You don't sound nuts to me! The truck in this video was mine for 16 years and I personally put over 240,000 miles on it. I did finally sell it 2 months ago and the headliner fix was still holding strong! You got this! 🙌
With that you are better off taking down the whole thing. Go to a fabric shop and get piece of flannel big doings to cover the entire thing. Take out the headliner backing piece (google search your make/model for help there), clean it good with a vacuum and then spray both the fabric and the headliner following the directions on the spray adhesive. Have someone help you start in the center line and move outward smoothing out all the “bubbles” and creases. It won’t be easy but you can customize it by selecting whatever fabric you want. I’m going to do an American Flag 🇺🇸 on the ceiling of our old Ford #midnightmaroon
Since it's the foam, between the fabric and the core headliner, that is deteriorating, and not the original adhesive, what keeps the residual foam from deteriorating more--and coming loose again? I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to sand off all the remaining foam from the core headliner (especially at the edge) before applying the adhesive. Your video is a little over a year old now. Do you still have the car? If so, how has this fix held up? Thanks for the video!
18 months and still holding strong. No new areas coming loose either. I still drive with my windows down all the time. I’m sure in worse cases you would need to take more drastic measures. But catch it early and avoid that mess. Good luck with yours. Hope it’s not worse than mine and needing more than this simple fix. 👍🏼
People keep saying the 3M Headliner Adhesive is also good. Here's a link to it if you'd rather try it - amzn.to/2rWQAtA

I am gonna work on my 2006 Toyota Avalon TODAY!!! You just saved this single mom $300!!!
That’s great to hear! You got this! 🙌🏼
Close enough. Doesn't need to pretty. I'll do mine next. Thank you for the vid.
Nailed it! 😜
Read the specs for the Loctite spray that you use. It specifically says NOT for Headliner use!
Shhh, don’t tell my headliner! Cuz it’s been fooled this whole time into working. 🤔🤷🏼♂️
DIY Home and Auto glad to hear that’s it working 😀.
Mine is doing the same thing and I have decided to use your video. Wish me luck lol.
You got this!!! 🙌🏼
Bless your heart and soul. Thank you!!!
Thanks. Glad to help.
Lol..good job bro + thank God for UA-cam
Amen brother!!! 🙌🏼
Amazing
Excellent.
Than you sir!!!! 🕺🏼🏆
The spray doesn't bleed thru and stain the fabric? Thanks
Just be sure to let it "tack up" before you start pressing it all together. If the glue is still "wet" it will soak through. But won't stain the fabric either way. It's clear and doesn't change the color.
Thanks!
I wish I would have seen this video a couple of years ago. Now it's gotten quite a bit worse and is in an area where I would have to slice it open to get
adhesive in there. I still might try it. I've been using tape and upholstery pins to hold it up.
Have you tried it yet? Sounds like you are close to a do over. 🤷🏼♂️
@@troysgarage Not yet. It's still too cold here and I've been so busy with other stuff that I forgot all about it. Not in the van much now days. Thanks for the reminder.
About to try mine👏🏽👏🏽 Covid19 projects lol
How’d it turn out? It’s pretty easy as long as you don’t over saturate the fabric.
The spoon is a really smart idea did you learn that trick from someone who does headliners lol
No, I was struggling with what “tool” would make this task easier. It came to me as I was eating a bowl of cereal. Cinnamon Life Cereal in fact! 😝
@@troysgarage Cinnamon Life.
The 💣.
Wouldn’t a credit card work better for smoothing out the fabric?
Thank you!
Of course! Thanks for watching and taking time to reply.
You made it seem so simple and the spoon trick did it for me, Thank you, I will try this myself on my car👍😁
Glad to help. 🙌🏼
Thanks for sharing, this just happened to me recently.
Sorry to hear that, it's an easy fix though if you catch it before it gets too far from the edges. Thank for taking time to comment!
@@troysgarage My pleasure. Yeah, i caught it early so it's not too bad. Thanks again.
Thank you man helped me out
You’re welcome! 👍🏼🕺🏼
It looks good. Will try this soon
Please do!
Spray adhesive and then remove plastic for overspray, then you would be able to see the lining in the front.
So you spray the outside of the headliner to get it neat?
Thanks for the idea
@@troysgarage just stating the facts.
Thanks, Same Problem I Have. Look Like An Easy Fix.
Did the repair last or did it start to sag again? I’m having the same issue, my headliner is beginning to sag/fall. In the same area you repaired.
Just this spring it has begun to pull away again. The repair lasted for several years. I have one more spot on the drivers side doing the same thing. I’m going to hit both sides again and hope for several more years before it needs it again. 🙌🏼🕺🏼
@@troysgarage The 3M can says multiple coats may be needed. I'm going to apply 3 coats to each surface before sticking it together in my repair.
My boys took all of mine down. I gotta get it done soon before that rip it. 😬
Sounds like a challenge. Good luck. 🙌🏼
Very helpful.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment. 👍🏼
I did this too. But after a couple months it started failing again. Did you experience the same thing? And if so did you determine a solution? Thanks.
Mine is only just now starting to come loose again. I haven’t messed with it yet. Not sure exactly what I’ll do about it this time. 🤨🤷🏼♂️
Hey Troy, how’s it holding up?
I sold the truck last month, but it was still holding strong when I let it go. I did the same repair above the drivers side about 6 months ago. Just as easy to apply and I'm confident it will hold for the new owner for a long time. The key is catching it early before it gets away from the edge. That's a much harder fix!
@@troysgarage thanks for responding 👍🏻
Thank you sir
You’re welcome! 🤘🏼
Thanks for the close up of the repair. Looks good keep em coming.
Great Job Sir!!!!! Thank You!!!!
Most of my liner is coming down how about do I go about doing that kind don’t know we’re to start from??
