Me: dreaming of having jump line like that to practice on within a hundred miles.
Also Me: Desperately scouting the woods for places to build a cheeky hidden tabletop.

In my opinion, the absolute most important part of jumping is to pump into the lip. I only just figured out how to jump a few months ago and that really helped me understand how to get up into the air and also stops me from getting bucked by the lip. I'm helping my husband learn how to jump now too and that's all he's focusing on and he's starting to clear small doubles.

    • @VanCan
      @VanCan  5 років тому +1

      Ya that’s important too!

I figured it was probably like any other facet of mountain biking. At the end of the day, it boils down to experience, which translates to confidence. The only way to gain experience is to do it. I've only been riding for 4 years, but it's weird to think there are dozens of sections at my local trails that I had to walk down when I first started because they were too steep, too techy, too rooty, rocky, etc. Scared the dickens out of me. "How does anyone ride down this?!" I would think to myself. But I've rode thousands of miles on those trails, and now I breeze through those sections without even thinking about it. There was a time just 2 years ago when I would've thought riding chunky rock gardens was impossible. Yet now I ride through them.
Moral of the story: There's no substitute for experience.
No book, video, instructor, etc is going to make any MTB skill comfy for you. Practice, practice, practice.
BTW - just my 2 cents - if you can't find any curbs or banks to practice on, you can build wooden ramps dirt cheap, and best of all, they're small and portable. I built a 3 ft wide ramp that's 1 ft tall and 4 ft long. I can add boards to the bottom of the high side if I want to make it steeper/taller. The ramp can also be set up on the edge of a downhill slope, allowing you to get more air and practice sloped landings.

I’ll be 49 next month and I’m learning to jump. Hitting the bike park twice a week and padded up from head to toe. Starting to get more comfortable on the green line but just rolling the blue line to get used to how steep the face of the jump is.
I definitely need more speed. I’ll work on that.

I can’t thank you enough. I used your advice, worked on hitting the green run over and over trying to pick up speed, also hit the bike park.
I commented three weeks ago and was rolling the blue line. Just cleared the blue line today! I’ll keep hitting that until I’m completely comfortable and can clean it consistently then move to the next blue run. After that it’s gaps *yikes!*

1:22 you can also jump off of the part of the curb where pedestrians normally go up and onto the sidewalk, where it dips down to the ground level then back up. where it goes back up, you can hit it sideways. you can also do the same thing, just with the curb going down for driveways, and if the driveways are close enough, there are some in my neighborhood, try and gap them.

My area has a total of 0 man-made jumps, just a few rock lips on a hiking trail or snowmobile trail. So there's no flow to them. When I hit them I always find myself doing that "dead sailor" or what ever you call it and both me and the bike are tilting and landing uncomfortably. I can bunny hop my hardtail about 8-12 inches (rear tire) with ease and comfort but I can't launch my bike properly off these (unconventional) lips. Is it just the jump? - lack of smooth run up area, flat landing, no straight or flat anything or is it just me? - not enough skill balancing for air time, bike is a 29er hardtail @ 31lbs so kinda big and heavy, needing more practice at steadying myself for the launch...

step 1, practice bunny hops, etc. step 2, have first class jump park near your house. step 3, never mind trail riding or mtb, you need to practice jumping all day. step 4. never mind that whole job thing, you need to practice practice practice. step 5. have a first class jump park near your house.

      Step 1: Yup
Step 2: I grew up in a town with no jumps, we built our own
Step 3: Ride trails with jumps?
      Step 4: I've always had a job/ school
      Step 5: See step 2
