"you've only failed if you give up...." now that's some good advice right there!
Wow that’s great it’s true
my wife say the same at beginning.

Dark souls advice
The squirrel teleported at 2:42
hahahahaahhaha i see the same thing huahuahuahuahua
Actually it told me that it tried to avoid the cam.
That's a glitch in the matrix
Lol not to ruin your fun but it was another video linked in
James Whitfield you had to be a spoil sport?😑 It teleported. Live with it.
Black Panther Squirrel
Gotta watch your back!
VanCan I've never seen a Black squirrel. Also, great video mate, I will be trying to get the manual nailed this week. Great tips and different from the usual ones I've seen.
Subbed. Look forward to more great content from you.
I have never seen a black squirrel either!
Micro puma
using the teleportation technique also!nice!
I learned how to automatic.
lmao
very very funny. ty.
Never seen this before, clever

disgusting, real men drive manual
I'm working on a HOW TO BUNNYHOP video right now. Let me know if you'd like to see more HOW-TOs!
Very nice video. What about a HOW TO JUMP? With your chilled approach this should be solid.
Kai working on that too!
Yes pls!
How to ride switch backs.
Uphill and downhill.
Then how to ride tech switch backs in both up/down hill.
Yea!
Thank you this is the most useful video to me so far. As a 51 year old going on 25 it’s a struggle to learn this.
@Wayne Johnson Same here
I'm 47, in lockdown and learning to manual in my garden. Did you manage it??
Turned 50 not to long ago. Ditched the SPD's after 13 years of riding and bought some Chesters a few weeks ago. Now in semi lock-down mode I've been trying to gain the skills I never really did before due to lack of practice but mostly b/c being clipped in really inhibits practicing manuals, wheelies and balance drills.
This vid has been great to get me going. In just a few days and several hours of practice I'm pulling manuals over about a 1 to 1 1/4 car park space. I can track-stand a decent amount of time, I'm learning to lift the rear wheel and combined with balance drills it's been really fun. Even doing some (very) basic trials moves like hopping front wheel off curb and sticking it with the front brake, then lifting the rear and swinging it down, balancing for a moment and then cruising on. Was looking for steps to practice this on today the schools are all locked up.
For those trying...keep it up. Practice and what really is helping me is manual'ing far enough up that you have to bail. This really helps overall.
Man..... I’m 58 , I used to do it all day long every day back in my better days but now I trouble getting it up, it’s like the bike just wasn’t made for....... but thanks to this video I won’t give up. Thanks best advice 👍
Did you get it????
This is really solid stuff Nick! I really like the little curb challenge and using the parking spots for measurement!
Thanks Brian! It's all about keeping it fun!
@@hfbvc9480 what do you take? And why are you calling people are gay? I dont care if they are, if they are a good friend then im their friend because they have a good personality and are not as stupid as you are dickhead.
I think that the insight on using rocking to get familiarized with being on the back wheel is outstanding. I'll try to work up to manuals through that. Thank you, VanCan!
Get those manuals!
VanCan Hey man... At the beginning when you were doing the long manual... Do u use your brake to feather? Or are u just using hips more? I find some tutorials say to use ur brake others to use hips/legs to keep balance point
@@flow2tech the correct way to manual is only with your hips
Yeah same. I'm an old dude now and only recently started riding again. Rode mtb badly for a while years ago and used to ride bmx badly when I was a kid. Never thought to try to use some of the stuff I used to do on a bmx to try to help me progress on an mtb, crazy but true. This vid opened my eyes to that, will def be trying the rocking thing to help me 👍
@@flow2tech ideally body weight. Brakes are backup
Those shins have seen some pedals
The worst part is, it's mostly from kicking my pedals while walking 🙄
Believe it or not, I'm such an idiot sometimes that I manage to get hurt that way even with a plastic pedal.
that is why MTBikers wear shorts all the time... to show off.
I'm rocking a hell of a case of staph right now because a petal cut into my bone.
Since I’m from Australia when there was that squirrel in the background I thought it was a massive spider
One thing I noticed myself doing recently that made them harder was pulling with one arm more than the other. This made it much more difficult to stay balanced. Make sure to let the bikes weight sit evenly in both hands, and STAY RELAXED!
I've watched a lot of videos on how to manual, and this video really broke down the manual into the fundamentals that will get our bodies used to moving/shifting our weight forwards and backwards on the bike. Everything makes sense now.
Sick bro you’ve inspired me. 2019 is the year to ride that shit
Check out my HOW TO BUNNYHOP tutorial! ua-cam.com/video/SN8I09ny-90/v-deo.html
Can I do this with my b-twin rockrider 340?
@@Myfishtankcreations you can do it on any bike it's not bike specific
VanCan I’m 45 i’m watching your videos I do not know how Do all that Is it too late to start don’t own a bike should I buy one
Hi are you clipped in?
It helps if you first learn how to manual a car. It translated nicely to MTB.
I just read how to do it...... in the manual.

From a 67 year old teacher , that was an excellent tutorial/coaching session . Well done.
Thank you!
For me.... Best “how to “ video to date! I felt no anxiety watching, just feeling I can do this. Thanks!
Never seen a lesson video on a DH mtb
It's my only MTB right now, new enduro is coming though!
VanCan You got rid of the Norco? :O
Ya sold it! I’ve got a new enduro coming though!
YT Capra by any chance?
You'll have to wait for the video next month! 😉
I reckon learning to manual was much easy for me after learning how to wheelie because once you've learnt to wheelie then you already have found your point of balance so that is easier to transfer over to a manual then
Though I know how to manual already, I can see how helpful this advice would have been when I was learning! Keep up the good advice and work!
Here are the Tips in Order:
1. Pull up with your arms (at the start at least)
2. Rock/hop back and forth between the front and back wheel.
3. Learn how to fall properly
4. Start manualing by going off of curbs and try to increase start distance from curb.
5. Practice Practice Practice.
Bonus Tip: Learn to Wheelie before manualing to get used to the motion.
Thanks dude screenshot this 😆
I been practicing wheelie for almost 3 months but im still cant get the balance point.
Any suggestion?

I did today some of my longest manuals. I learned that speed is key.

Even doing some (very) basic trials moves like hopping front wheel off curb and sticking it with the front brake, then lifting the rear and swinging it down, balancing for a moment and then cruising on. Was looking for steps to practice this on today the schools are all locked up. My technique is terrible most likely but one step at a time.
For those trying...keep it up. Practice and what really is helping me is manual'ing far enough up that you have to bail. This really helps overall.
The thing that finally helped me was pulling back rather than pulling up. Getting my weight low and directly back is what really got me into the right position to lift and hold the front tire up.
Jumping off the back of the bike really does help!! it really helps to know how to fall, and it helps you find your balance point with low risk! Would reccomend
One of the most real videos about how to manual! It will help me ! Thank you!
Just came across this. Seems so much more relatable than a lot of stuff out there which - in my opinion - get too deep into the weeds of body positioning/weight shifting/pedal pressure etc. All that stuff to keep track of when learning a new skill is, for me, way too complicated. Can’t wait to try out your more straightforward stuff. Thanks!
Finally a break-down of the learning steps that are ignored in every other video i've seen so far! Very helpful. Thanks!
Great tips. The rocking back and forth developing balance and feel is a great tip. I practiced intentionally looping out and hoping off the back as well, which builds confidence knowing you can bail! Good stuff.
Alright...if I don't get it after this video I'm joining my local chapter of MBUMA and just owning it. (Mountain Bikers Unable to Manual Anonymous)
Can you manual yet?
I don't know how to manual I have been trying for months watched every video twice and still cant. I can wheelie and pedal but It just goes back down no matter how far I lean back and It is impossible for me to pull my front wheel up while im moving or not going very slow.
@@letsargue9314you're not trying hard enough, bud.
@@shithead bro how do you know how hard he’s trying?
@@monarchmain-6905 because if he was trying hard enough he would be able to manual.
Very good and real tips.
You’ve earned my subscription.
Great video!!
You’ve really inspired me to go learn how to manual.🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻😊
Nice overview and awesome tips, I can't wait to get out there and put some of these ideas into practice!! Ride On Man :-)
Cheers mate for sharing you experience! I will keep trying!
Thanks man.. Makes a lot of sense.. Wish I saw this before I fell on my tailbone with some fully failed manual attempts.. On my 47 yr old back no less.. I'm really gonna try to work on fundamentals before trying things I don't know how to do from now on.... I tried to do a "drop" and came soo close to going over the bars.. And at that moment in my mind i thought I 'landed it" lol.. You would prob. make a good MTB coach by the way..
Another AWESOME video man, I have been trying to manual for a wile now and This has really helped. Looking forward to your next video mate. Keep up the great work
Thanks! Just keep at it. Once you start to get it a little bit I found it starts to be pretty fun and you spend hours practicing because you're pumped!
Thanks alot Nick! I was struggling to do a manual and after these tricks, I can😊
Awesome!!
I have been trying to manual for SO LONG and this helped me SO MUCH!
Fantastic!
thank you for sharing with us :) Awesome work mate, keep it up
It helped me a lot to not look at my front wheel, instead look ahead at the horizon. Then, I get more confident getting up the front wheel. When I was more confident, I could start looking at the front wheel again.
I was taught this as riding a wheelie and manual was pumping the bike downward on the back side of a roller to create a forward force vector that slightly accelerates the bike forward.
This is a brilliant video with awesome tips! Thank you! I am giving this a shot for sure! Cheers. Al
It looks so easy when I see someone else doing this;-) Several times I had a dream that I make manual or wheelie- it was really good feeling...
This motivated me a lot! Thanks man!!
Love the run up to a kerb tip, ideal for checking distance progression and the feel of doing it off a drop, albeit a small one
Great Vid pal, loved the tips and im starting out finding it impossible, so im thankful for the kick in the a$$ to keep at it!
I like that curb trick. I started doing it before this video. It’s fun and challenging
Just learning how to manual this weekend... Thanks for the tips
Great advice! I was aware of and already trying a few of the things you mentioned like intentionally looping out in a controlled manner or the getting into the balance point by rocking the bike on the spot. But the one I never came across is trying to hold a manual further and further away from a kerb. I think that a lot of the problems I have with the manual and bunny hop are of mental nature ( fear of looping out etc). I can easily manual off kerbs and much higher obstacles so by holding that split second manual bit by bit longer might "fool" my mind. Thanks!
Great stuff! Lovin i! Thank you Van.
Feel like ur tips are more understanding to me...great video.
Great video! Thanks man. I am new to biking so this was a huge help!!!
fantastic I will try again and again cheers mate
I’m learning how to manual right now and I’m getting my body used to it. Thanks for the tips!
No problem! Keep at it!
Good video I like how you used your DH bike. The tip about manual to curb drop makes sense.
Great tips. Thanks!
2:40 that squirrel was like fool whatchu got for me?
your style is helpful Van ,thanks!
Thank you for your time and this valuable tip. Much appreciated!
Thanks for the nice comment!
Yeah, the thing about dropping off the curb seems like a good idea, I can already drop off the first way (slowly) but I will definately try the second way. Great tips!
Get those manuals!
Dude these are amazing tips! I can totally see how these can help and will start testing them out 👍 Thank you
Awesome and thanks!
2nd video I've seen that said you need to learn to fall off the bike.. can wait to switch to flat pedals again so I can start learning. Hope I can muster all my patience for this. It's hard learning these things when you're almost 40. Thanks for the video man.
Cool I would like to learn that this year... I think it's a nice start and tips from your side🤙💪
So many great tips, thank you!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Dude really great ideas. I am just starting a 60 and I am battling track stand. Next comes the manual. I am practicing going forward and pushing back over the back wheel so I can get used to the feeling and motion.
Man today was so cool. go up dirt slop as slow as you can. Even just pump the pedal without going all the way around and work the wiggle. Oh my god, this is going to get me to track standing really fast. And its a great workout for me.
great stuff! thx for sharing!
Your so helpful mate great advice
thanks!! i must practice it now!
PUT THE TIME IN! best advice there is!
I actually feel encouraged by this, thank you xxxxxx

I like the way the squirrel suddenly disappeared. Have you "the force"?
Love your videos!!!
Great info!
great vid! I learned that using the smooth little ramp transitions from road to sidewalk set the bike in the perfect position, all I had to do was lean back in position push a bit with my legs and I was manualing!
Nice! That's a solid way to practice too!

The squirrel is travelling in space and time.
Some Great Tip's there..Nice job and thank you.

Great video man. All I want to do is have a set of things where I know if I keep doing it I'll get there.
Interesting tips, I'll give 'em a try. Thanks!!
Let me know how it goes!
Great video. My biggest let down in the learn to manual thing, is practice. I ride 2 to 3 times a week and just keep forgetting to try in the car park etc. I like the off the curb suggestion. I can do that at home.👍
great tips, thanks a lot!
I love how the squirrel walked right up to behind him
Good stuff, practice, practice, practice is what I need to do!
All Of These Tips Are Worthy; I appreciate the grass tip while "over" pulling up. That is a great way to build muscle memory when your nervous about flipping backwards. Righteous video and excellent soundtrack. Be Well Brother

Thanks!
Way to own the nervous.

Super refreshing helpful tips!!! :)
Thank you! I love your videos. It makes me want to learn.
Thanks!
Excellent - refreshingly practical! Love that squirrel too. Keep up the great UA-cams.
Thanks!
Best advice I ever learnt... Don't lock your legs out. Otherwise you have no forward and back 'play' to correct balance. If you lock your legs, you are kind of just relying on a lucky pull up, rather than the reality of constantly adjusting and correcting (which is what a manual requires).
Liked the rocking tip. Tried it out and definitely got me one step further.
Awesome!
