Bunny hopping. Its pretty much the same on hard tails and full sus bikes. What worked for me was to push down on the front suspension, lower your body weight, and jump like you would when reaching for a high up tree branch. Getting the back wheel up on a hard tail was the second hardest skill I've learned. It shift your body weight down while on the center of the bike, and then motion forward over the bars as you shoot back up (like diving in a pool).
Wheelies and manuals. They're my weakest link. I can get the front wheel over objects but just trying to keep it in the air for extended periods is just not working. I know it's me and not my bikes because everyone else can absolutely shred on my bikes with their current set ups. Oh well, I will keep reviewing and adjusting, I will get there one day.
Breaking correctly. It ain't just about stopping!!!! To entail trial and error as part of my method is a must, as is having/knowing the quality/tech to use. IE hydraulics, resin pads, etc. The largest part of my method was learning how to maintain my own breaks, and when success was made, too then; and every time there after, increasing my speeds. Breaking is akin to jumping, but more aptly named....don't break, and get broke....n. Ha! Get er done peeps!!!! You can do it!!!
First Jack, now Lewi, soon the whole GMBN crew will be shredding like bosses! Cool. Get them jumping well then teach them how to whip. Whips always look cool. Just something awesome about bikes being sideways in the air. 😎
Doing a DH race really helped me jump better. Too busy thinking about setting up the next section to worry about the jumps and the less you think the more natural you fly
Man. I've been biking for years. Out for the last 15 or so, but I've done tens of thousands of kilometers in the saddle. I'm not afraid of hurting myself. I do martial arts, I'm ex-Army, did sports growing up. I've broken bones, have many scars and am generally not scared of much. I got a fancy new mountain bike a couple months ago, and decided to challenge myself. After just getting back in the saddle and doing several hundred kilometers to get used to it again, I went over to a bike park 5km away from me. It's a BMX course, but theres tabletop jumps and banks and whatnot, free to access. I watched a bunch of videos on the topic, and gave it a try. And failed horribly!!! ROFL! Not saying I'm unhappy with it, as it was a first attempt, alone at the park, never having had tried it before. But I tried it. I'm such a strange combination of expert in some areas and complete novice in others. Handling banks at high speed? No issues. I can bunny hop, in my weird way, it's flat, self taught, but never clipped in, I've never used clips. Gotta respect those who can jump. I'll get there. I don't give up easy. I'm 41, old and broken from life, but I got this. I'm getting on my bike pretty much every other day. Sometimes I'll do a couple days on then a couple days off, but it's pretty much day for day at this point. Thanks for the videos. I might not have a coach or a friend to be at the park with me, but your content has been helping. I'll go back in a few days. Get another workout ride in, then get back to the park and try again.
Ah ha...the bunny hop. Just thinking about jumping got me nervous, but this method has literally given me that mental picture I need for confidence. I can "see" my jump before doing so now. Thanks.
@@argentstrom8363 Same, but I really should take some time away from riding trails and learn to manual and bunny hop. But I have been saying that for about ten years… 🤣
Repetition is the key to any success. Might take you 10 minutes to master it, might take you 10 months. Key is to keep practicing. I landed on the top of my head today pretty hard, knew I shouldn’t have tried to make a stump into a jump
I MTB since 41 Years in the Swiss Alps and I also teach MTB, Snowboard/ Ski. It's obvious he did jump before ;) But nevertheless, the progression was very nice I must say! Well done.
I'm crap at jumping, have been for ever and I (sort of) blame Neil for it! I was booked to do a skills day with him at Llandegla but had to postpone it due to a crash, by the time I was fit enough to rebook he'd sodded off to a new job, might even have been for GMBN. To make matters worse Chris Smith did the exact same thing to me a few years ago, delayed this time due to work commitments. So I can't jump for toffee and it's all GMBN's fault 🤣
More videos like this please. On gmbn you make way too many goofy lets talk about the obviously videos og videos of yourself trying to show what a beginner should do. This is waaay more informative, since we as viewers can see what we are probably doiong wrong ourselfes.
One of the biggest mistakes here is your doing it on a full sus. Do it on a hard tail with hard suspension setting on the front so any mistakes you do it will go right to your body. Also use a cheap bike that will force you to take care of how you land. Cause if you hit the ground too hard you will either snap the derailleur, frame or the wheels will bend. When you do all the above you will get a better feel for the whole terrain and how your bike reacts.
What skill took you the longest to learn? What tip or piece of advice have you heard that helped you progress the most? Let us know below 👇
Manual or fakie

Wheelies? Not for MTB, tis for da circus.
Ha!
i would love to see more of these. let's see louie progress to more advanced jumps
Judging by his body position and how relax he is in the air, he definitely jumped before.
he got CSI'ed
I would love to learn to jump at a park like that!
Yes they can... Watch the Loam Ranger 'stand up to the jump' rule video🤘😜
Best one on UA-cam.
So cool to see you guys hit up the gems of NWA! The Railyard is an awesome place for progression!
It was a fun spot! We're glad we got a chance to check it out 🙌

Just got into MTB about 6 months ago and the bunny hop is def something I need to practice to get confident on some small jumps
Doing a DH race really helped me jump better. Too busy thinking about setting up the next section to worry about the jumps and the less you think the more natural you fly
That’s exactly what you should do as a beginner. Enter a downhill race. What could possibly go wrong?
He's got pretty good bike control for a beginner bike rider 😉. Great video as always.
It's all about having the right set of safe, progressively bigger jumps. If you have that you can learn super fast
Tallent 50% + good teacher the other 50%.. You can clearly see that Niel has the knowledge to teach..
i like this video's! great explaining and i learn a lot of it. greets from the netherlands.

I still can’t freakin’ wheelie even with practice and GMBN advice. Arrrr

What grade of steel is used in the frame Is it Hi Tensile
Where are bike parks like this anywhere around me?
I want a bike park like this one in my town, what companies can build this in Switzerland ?
just get your friends a shovel? god europeans are afraid of hard work
Nice little vid. However there is no way he hasn’t jumped a bike before 😊
Louis has dabbled with MTBs in the past, but road is where his heart lies 🚴♂ This was his first time really trying to get his jump technique sussed.
As someone who can't wheelie, can't bunny hop who then only gets any height from jumps purely by sprinting as fast as possible. That's my skill level

So am I right in thinking you can’t completely clear medium tabletops without learning to bunny hop first?
Would like to know how long the shoot took :-D
The most complex instructions EVER btw. :-D
Lol, Niel so deadpan about smacking with the stick, Louis asked whether HR approved 😂
Cure (ish) for dead sailor is just deliberately do a little cross up (x-up)... Keeps u fluid, and not stiffening up
Great video 😃

Can u a vid about learning hips. I looked on the internet and there is no even a single one
It's from a few years ago, but this video has plenty of tips for hips! ua-cam.com/video/2xKqHbDGXDo/v-deo.html
"cut music for lowie because kid top overthere do nacnac" 😂😂😂
Legend has it the camera man is still wheelieing to this day

Of course we want Neil to teach us, who wouldn't want to learn from the best?!
New vids a nice one ❤
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Chapeau!
Next time Nac-Nacs :-P
Berns took me forever and the still give me difficulty
"beginner" 😂😂 sure thing 👌🏻
Maybe i can convince Rich Payne to teach me how to jump next time i see him at the local track rather than just being a bit awkward and star struck
Idea: how to ride burms without lowsiding a 69° fork angle.
well, I'll probably be falling off my bike tonight as a result of this video
Yes, yes, teach me, 100% guarantee I did not jump before 😉😃

This is really helpful because I'm teaching my sister How to jump
Good luck to both of you! We hope you have fun 🚀
Thanks
It's not the jumping that's hard, it's the landing.
Got the surf music on loop for the Arkansas bike park huh? OK… 😂
12 year olds doing Nac Nacs 😂
Landing is my main issue
Its easy to have airtime. The hardest part is how to land. 😂😂😂
Amazing how this video does not explain at all how to jump a bike, where to land yes, how to do it NOOO ;-)
I was thinking the same. It's like Louis was getting coached off camera and Neil is just showing us the results!
Learn? Yes
Do? No

Depends on thier age if they young ain’t no way
Jumping is easy ...it's landing that's fkd up.
I know some people learning to jump for 16 years, and still worse than him.
Way to show a lot, but tell us nothing.
