For beginners these tips are really good, also explaining how things should feel when done right are so important to find the right cues as a beginner. In the end it's mostly practice, practice, practice but knowing how things should feel is definitely valuable. I would also suggest you ride many different jumps, as many and as as often as you can. And preferably with people that already can jump well or are at least slightly better than you. One more thing, you can also feel like you are being pushed forward because your rear suspension is set with too much rebound. Turn the knob to the snail or - if you feel you are getting kicked forward by the shock. Also be careful if there is a root or something at the end of the lip because that can really kick you forward as your rear wheel rolls against it.
Yep, like most things it's proper form & a TON of practice!! Great advice on the variance of jumps, that's the real difference maker especially if you can pair it up with riding alongside folks that have some jumping experience!!
Thanks guys. A lot of folks have trouble in the air when jumping. keeping the bike straight, not leaning over to one side and such. I see many riders probably pulling more with their dominant hand/arm.
I never considered one arm being stronger causing that but it makes sense. I kinda figured most beginners had a hard time loading up and not moving their bars around when pulling up afterwards
Totally! I think not being centered on the bike or squared up with the lip, has a lot to do with this too! This is why starting small, going slow & practicing is the way!! Much love, -Mike

Great video. I want to be more consistent hitting a jump that has a steeper lip. I am ok on more mellow jumps but struggle on something steeper. I find my timing gets thrown off because the bike gets pushed back into me faster and with more force. I need a lot more practice for sure. Thanks for the video.
Yeah that timing definitely takes practice, and it changes from jump to jump. Just keep working at it and make sure your weight stays centered and balanced throughout, and I know you’ll start boosting in no time! Thanks for the kind words and for joining us for this video! We appreciate you!
Thanks for sharing & great observation!! You're spot on with practice, it'll help so much to just take note of what's going on & revisiting the drawing board. Biggest tip with steeper or taller lips is just staying central/neutral on the bike & putting that pump force through the pedals as much as possible. Stay RAD, -Mike
Where is this cool little park located? Looks like the front range. I'm up in Evergreen and I'm building a home course for my 9 yr old and I to practice on and would love to come see other progression examples like this as I build things. thx! Great videos btw! You guys rock.
@@JoyOfBike Sure does!Even i m dirt jumping since i was 12 i realised watching your video why every time i m pumping the jump i have better control on the air!
When I watch these jumping videos....a song always comes into my head...."You gotta stand up to the jump, you gotta stand up to the jump" (Loam Ranger)
What about staying in a straight position when landing? I feel sometimes I come in a little crooked and washout with the front tire. Any tips for spotting the landing? Thanks 🤘🏻
i think i have the leveling and landing parts pretty comfortable, at least when i can make it to the landing. i'm going to focus on pump and takeoff this season to see if i can clear more of the jumps at my home trails. couple variants i'm curious how to adapt to: flat lips with just a brief transition to the incline 10 feet or more before the edge. when/where do you apply pump? portable jumps without a lander on mostly level ground. mine is an adjustable kicker that goes from 17-20" tall (home built from lunch ride mtb plans). is there a way to use less energy absorbing the impact of landing without adding a landing ramp?
The pump would be applied as you feel the lip pushing back into you & carried through up the face, similar to these lips! With flat landings it's really about dropping the landing gear & using your body as a spring to absorb the impact as good as you can!
So basically what you're saying is you need to practice tons to get a basic jump dialled before trying to boost for more height? Are there jumps where you need to boost though just to make the landing or will a flatter jump done correctly still get you there? Thanks for filming, Andy
That’s correct; like anything learning the fundamentals are required before building on top. Boosting is generally not a functional part of jumping, outside of looking cool! You can get over just about anything with the fundamental jumping technique. 🫶🏻
Hey Mike et al. Awesome video! It's the first time I've ever seen anyone explain how to get maximum boost. I'm struggling to boost as high as I want. I watched a video of myself the other day and my legs often don't quite fully extend (even though they feel like they do), yet I clear all of the blue jumps at local parks very smoothly and am even starting to throw bar turns in here and there. I rarely ever dead sailor anymore and feel fairly comfortable and in control in the air. The problem I'm having is that I feel like I could boost more, but that if I did I would either loop out (which I haven't yet), or way overshoot the landing (which I tend to do when I boost as hard as I can). Any ideas as to what my problem is? I'm practicing 3-4 days a week so hopefully I can get it dialed soon. Thanks guys.
Yoooo! Thanks for the love amigo - love to hear the progression you're experiencing, so rad!! When it comes to going higher, if you feel like you're over shooting slow down a bit & really focus on riding the entire lip & pulling the bars into your lap, similar to how Matt does off the lip! Keep up the practice & you'll be blasting in NO time!
It makes a more sense now, seeing the jump without full suspension. The principle is the same. I think I was over thinking it, getting in the weeds thinking about setting up my suspension just right.
Ah I love to hear it!! We love demonstrating w/ the BMX bikes for that exact reason, the mechanics & movements really stand out. Principle is EXACTLY the same! Hope it helps in practice 🫶🏻
I've been jumping for years and the only type of jumps I'm not comfortable with are steep kickers , maybe you can do a video on approaching steep big kickers like at a downhill park
Way to make it weird with the landing, chase.😉 Also, never roll dirt jumps, it can destroy all the hard work put into building them. Just do a mini jump so the lip doesn't get messed up. Wooden jumps like the ones in this video are fine to roll of course.
hahahah we were DYING when he did that. Very valid point, unless the lip is rolled try & do a little pop at the top to not take the lip down. Thanks for sharing! All love, -Mike
heh, when i was about 12 years old, i tried jumping and...long story short--shattered my collarbone; since then, my two wheels NEVER leave the ground (well, when I'm actually riding it) :D
These booters are a bit different than the more shallow ramps on the big 20-40ft bike park tabletops. They are not great to learn on for beginners because they can be unforgiving due to the tight radius and near vertical lips. Just an observation.
Hey hey! Yeah, good observation. The shallow bike park jumps typically require a good launching technique, which we’ve identified as being a little different than jumping. The reason we’d want to learn jumping on the tighter radius jumps is because you can easily translate the skill to the mellower lips. It’s harder to do it the other way around and build a habit of launching off mellow lips and try to apply that technique to the steeper jumps. Nothing wrong with learning some techniques on the shallow jumps or a water bar, though! You’ve got a very valid point that those are more approachable and less scary as a beginner, so thanks for mentioning that. We appreciate you!
I came here to learn how to jump over my bike. I was surprised when I found out this is to catch air on your bike. That is the opposite of what I am trying to do. I need to keep this shit firmly on the ground so my ancient body survives. However I would like to be able to jump over my bike so if any of you all could link me a video of how to jump over your bike that would be badass. If I do decide to launch on my bike will it help if I grow a badass beard? Not sure why we aren't all talking about that beard. Is that Matt? Hell ya matt. Grow that shit.
Yep I learned how to do all that in three weeks flat. Practicing six hours a day, six day's a week. Through many injuries and coming off my mtbike, then it all clicked together. Thanks dude's.
You need to differentiate between beginner jumping skills and advanced jumping skills. “Pulling bars to your hips as you stand straight up” on the peak of jump is advanced. Like did that not cross anyone’s mind? Are these necessary to jump safely and effectively. I’ve seen pro mtb coach jumping doubles and most of these points were not covered because these are advanced skills. Again, not what’s necessary to effectively and safely clear doubles on trail. Example, correct speed, compress, decompress suspension stay neutral on bike. Start small build confidence and slowly go bigger and bigger.
The only thing that’d be considered advanced in this tutorial was labeled as a “pro tip”, which requires pulling back off the lip to direct momentum upward…because it’s just that, an advanced tip to exercise after the basics have been mastered; which was also noted. Being able to stand into the lip or applying pump, in an upright position on thebike & allowing it to ride the WHOLE lip is a great goal to practice toward, because it’s the correct way to execute the skill. Otherwise everything we cover here is a base, fundamental skill that can be applied to any jump from a beginner level to safely & correctly learn to jump, on a mellow lip with a rollable landing like what we chose here. I hope you understand. 😀
I'm probably over thinking this . How does someone who is learning to jump ,know if there hopping a jump or not. My problem is I can't get the back tire to hit the lip no matter if the jump is 3 ft or 5 ft tall .Thanks
Steps in the video: 1. Speed and Pump 2. Taking Off and Leveling Out 3 Landing and Practicing Bikes in the video: 1. BMX 2. MTB 3. Gravel 4. Commuter/Clunker 5. Dirt Jumper I’ll talk to Mike and Matt about jumping the swing bike next time… 🤔 Thanks for watching!

Stay RAD,
-Mike
Nice video guys. Love the detail.
For an old man learning to make MTB more fun and safer Jumping skills are key and this guide is excellent. Thanks.
Thanks Neil!! Love that fun is the goal; that’s all the matter at the end of the day amigo. Much love!

Where is this cool little park located? Looks like the front range. I'm up in Evergreen and I'm building a home course for my 9 yr old and I to practice on and would love to come see other progression examples like this as I build things. thx!
Great videos btw! You guys rock.
Hey hey! This is the Berthoud Bike Park! Would be a bit of a drive from Evergreen but worth a visit!
Thanks for the compliment, we appreciate you!
Really love your videos! Sorry not to buy your merch but I’m in Rome, Italy! 😅
Ah dude! No apologies at all, when we make it to Rome (my dream destination) just show us around 🫶🏻
great videos, will you be doing more advanced how to's in the future? id like to figure out how to 360 a big old enduro bike
Thanks, yo. That's the plan!!
Excellent analysis!Thanks!
Thank you!! Hope it helps.

@@JoyOfBike Sure does!Even i m dirt jumping since i was 12 i realised watching your video why every time i m pumping the jump i have better control on the air!
the berthoud bike park is a few miles from my house. i’m working on my 1000 hours! the way matt can go straight up, in the air is blowing my mind.
It’s pretty mind blowing seeing what Matt can do on a bike. Even crazier in person.
Hope to run into you out there soon! Thanks for watching!
Hope to see you out there soon amigo!!
Matt can go UP better than most, he's a WIZARD!!
All love,

Where is that park? Those jumps are the dream!
This is the Berthoud Bike Park in Colorado!
When I watch these jumping videos....a song always comes into my head...."You gotta stand up to the jump, you gotta stand up to the jump" (Loam Ranger)
issssa good tune!
Great video and tips, good job guys💪🔥
Thank YOU for the love! Stoked you enjoyed it & hope it helps you on the bike. 🫶🏻
What about staying in a straight position when landing? I feel sometimes I come in a little crooked and washout with the front tire. Any tips for spotting the landing? Thanks 🤘🏻
i think i have the leveling and landing parts pretty comfortable, at least when i can make it to the landing. i'm going to focus on pump and takeoff this season to see if i can clear more of the jumps at my home trails.
couple variants i'm curious how to adapt to:
flat lips with just a brief transition to the incline 10 feet or more before the edge. when/where do you apply pump?
portable jumps without a lander on mostly level ground. mine is an adjustable kicker that goes from 17-20" tall (home built from lunch ride mtb plans). is there a way to use less energy absorbing the impact of landing without adding a landing ramp?
@@JoyOfBike Awesome, that takes some of the pressure off, thanks for the reply.
Great Video
Thx for the love amigo, stoked ya enjoyed!
Would you guys could a video doing drops?
amazing vid
Appreciate you!!! Have a dope day.
Great job homies🤙🏽
Thanks for the tips boys
Of course!! Happy jumping ⚡️🖤
I've been jumping for years and the only type of jumps I'm not comfortable with are steep kickers , maybe you can do a video on approaching steep big kickers like at a downhill park
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much!! Thank YOU for hangin' out.
Stay RAD,

Looks like a nice bike park, which one is it?
It’s HUGE! It’s berthoud bike park in CO.
dude, any difference doing a jump using cleat or flat pedals?
What about 12-14 foot high transition….. Same technique?
You got it! We can do another more advanced gap jump tutorial in the future to show it, but the fundamentals are the exact same. ⚡️🖤
All love,
-Mike
I'm an old fart back on a bike after 20 years without. I've never been a good jumper and I'd like to feel comfy with this skill... again !

You guys should film a trails session
Matt would melt the internet if we did that 😂🫠 so we absolutely should
OH!! Don't tempt us with a good time! Matt will be back in a few weeks & this will 100% happen.

About to turn 44, time to learn to jump. Oh boy lol.
Ah, don’t stress it!!! You’ve got this - just take it one step at a time & enjoy the ride. 😎
-Mike
Thanks for the great video hopefully a lot less OTBs for this guy lol
You got this!!!
Thanks i want to not crash. I wan to have fun jumping
Best rule of thumb to aviod crashing is to find a comfortable sized jump & take your time with it!
heh, when i was about 12 years old, i tried jumping and...long story short--shattered my collarbone; since then, my two wheels NEVER leave the ground (well, when I'm actually riding it) :D
Only one spot where i can learn to jump is pump track, but it's an asphalt one, and i'm scared of not landing it or landing on my face😂
Not a bad spot to learn though! Sometimes you can use the berms as fly outs to get the fundamentals dialed in. Where do ya live?
My issue is that I tend to lock up in the air. How do I fix that? Lol
What bike park is this?
@@jadenmarshall7104 berthoud bike park!
@@chasewillie.1 Agreed. hitting a booter at high speed for the first time would be a surprise! good content!!
Maybe someday ill do it with confidence. Until then...hold on bud.
Ah you got it! Just takes practice and repetition to get out of the "hold on" phase and into the "heck yeah" phase!
@chasewillie.1 🤘 hoping before I'm 40 I can get it down lol.
Now if only my local bike park didn't close down. I have to drive 3 hours to get to some good jumps
Dang!!! Go to city meetings, fight the good fight & maybe you can be the change your community needs. Sorry to hear it amigo.
That’s what I’m talking about! No easy button, just practice. I admire your commitment! Nice work!
That's the attitude!!

Why is there another jump tutorial??? All we need to do is 🎶🎶 Stand to the jump🎶🎶
This inspires me to quit jumping n start being a roadie 😂

Haha of course, it’s hard to jump with a beverage in your hand!
I'm scared 😅
Cmon big daddy, you got this!
Whips please
Comin' soon!!! Thanks dawg.
Can do! Thanks!
The secret to jumping a bike is practicing. You have to mess up and learn what not to do in order to learn what to do.
This is true, however applying correct form from the beginning can help alleviate some of the more dangerous mistakes! Happy riding, yo.

When casting to my television, the products for sale don't go away and make the video unwatchable.
Oh dang, that's odd! Hopefully UA-cam fixes that sooner than later! Sorry to hear that.

After watching countless videos, what does mean when they said dont bunny hop the jump? Ain't you using the bunny hop technique to jump.
Valid question; Using the bunny hop technique to ONLY level the bike is VERY different than bunny hopping off the lip!
I'm probably over thinking this . How does someone who is learning to jump ,know if there hopping a jump or not. My problem is I can't get the back tire to hit the lip no matter if the jump is 3 ft or 5 ft tall .Thanks
