  • ***Shadowplay is a turd and didn't record any in-game audio so I had to reconstruct it all manually. I'm actually decently happy with how it came out.
Unfortunately, neither the ship or the drop pods are on the workshop yet. I've had issues posting things and, granted, it's been a while, but I'm lazy.
The ship does use mods, but the drop pods themselves do not, so you could attach them to a vanilla ship with no issues. Just mess with the parachute deploy altitude since I currently have them set to handle unlimited speed. I also intend to make another video of this using the Aerodynamics mod to make the reentry more exciting.

Yes, I know how reentry works. Yes, I know that realistically this would turn the person inside into a puddle- I knew these things while working on this design and before posting this video. I'm working with very limited space in a game where I'm forced into using half meter cubes. The in-universe lore accounts for this by using very small thrusters along the edges of the canopy rim, but that can't be done in Space Engineers- at least not without making the drop pods much larger than can fit in this ship. The sudden stop with the parachute is only a solution because of the limitations of working within a block-based building game and obviously wouldn't ever be used by any stretch of the imagination in reality (yes I have tried using scripts, I can't fit any more thrusters at all).
Aside from that, I'm glad people enjoy the design. It's definitely meant more for form over function in SE and a visualization of the basics of its function in my world's lore.

12G is generally regarded as the G limitfor survival of the human body. But that's "sustained" G's.
So long as impulse remains small (the area under a force vs time curve), the human body can survive higher peak G's. I dunno about 200 G's, it'd have to be a very short duration impulse to survive that, but if I recall correctly, ejection seats can reach upwards of 40 G's.

    • @LordOceanus
      @LordOceanus 2 роки тому +5

@@hatman4818 the amount of deceleration (measured in Gs) is dependent on many factors. Such as the amount of jerk, the force vector, the position of the body, and natural biological variance. The upper overall G limit of a human in any position is usually around 100G though people have survived worse with very serious injuries. In this case very rough back of the napkin math gives an average over ~4.5s of20Gs of acceleration applied vertically while in a seated position. this is actually within the limits of an untrained human remaining outright conscious. The amount of Jerk is more of a concern Jerk is the rate of change in acceleration which is pretty significant but still survivable with a proper harness so as to not to hit the ceiling of the pod. I for one would prefer a gentler deceleration but its just on the edge of potentially acceptable. A 40G ejection seat would be something else. Most are 10-20Gs

FINALLY MORE DROP PODS!!!!! I absolutely love drop pods but there’s barely any videos on UA-cam of them. I use whiplash’s drop pod script and my most recent achievement is making a drop pod that goes at just the right speed to put a small hole in the ground, but also doesn’t kill the pilot. Its a lot like how actual ODST pods literally slam into the ground and embed themselves. Its very cinematic to use.

Completely agree! For some reason, despite me using mods fairly freely now, certain things like my drop pods I like to keep totally vanilla and scriptless so that at least some parts of my creations can be used anywhere. I definitely want to try out that script sometime, though it will require a redesign of my current ones. But, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the cinematics of it (I also remember that script accounting for speeds above 100m/s, which will be perfect for me since with my current system you have to manually adjust the parachute deploy height depending on your altitude, gravity, etc. (also means that moons are a no-go pretty much)).

    • @deckerbarborka6405

chutes are also incredibly unreliable on servers, and without perfect planning for your drop zone requires a fair bit of margin on chute deployment altitude to account for terrain (chute deployment setting is based off distance from sea level rather than terrain) which has a tendency to leave pods floating down at 6m/s or so for a bit, making them easy pickings for defenses. whip's script eliminates this issue and it's quite fun

    • @guidomista7960

@@deckerbarborka6405 yeah parachutes aren’t very reliable imo. I used to make drop pods with chutes before i started using suicide burns (term used by NASA for when you use only thrust to land.) now that i use whip’s drop pod script, my success rate went from about 40% to 90% (yes i did the math I’m a massive nerd.) there’s several dope ass scripts that really help with drop pods. Theres this one calculator script i use where you input the coordinates of your drop zone and it gives you the exact coordinates to drop from so you land right where you want to. Only problem is I’m sort of a dumbass so I’m always off by a tiny bit and end up missing the drop zone by 30 meters. I might end up putting all my good drop pods on the workshop if i can get it to work. My PC recently broke down but i got it fixed and im hoping that somehow magically fixes my workshop problems.

ODST pods use a sort of parachute, etc. to slow their decent after a point to make the drop survivable.
Ones used by the Emperor's Avenging Angels on the other hand don't do much in the way of slowing down, enough to that it's occupants of Space Marines can survive but they make ODST's pods look gentle, especially if it is the Deathwind Variant which doesn't need to slow down at all since once the doors drop heavy weapons fire blankets the area around the pod as Automated weapons spend every last round they have before the drop pods with deadlier cargo arrive.

Drop pods may be unrealistic (at least right now,) but they have a great use in sci fi.
The effectiveness of a drop pod and how efficient depend on 2 factors.
      1: your inertial dampening tech.
      2: your enemy’s air defenses.
If you have good inertial dampeners, then drop pods are essential. If you have good inertial dampeners then that means you aren’t using parachutes which open you up to enemy air defenses. The only times good drop pods are ineffective is when the enemy either
A: has some kind of dome or shield protection on the targets.
B: they have insanely good anti missile tech.
Thats the main reason why you see drop pods in so much sci fi media.
Edit: and some technology that allows the pilot to survive the massive amounts of g’s. Without that they are useless.

      That would be escape pods.
Launching drop-pods as the ship is about to blow up would be somewhat counter intuitive since the infantry would need some kind of follow up strike to maintain a beach-head. Not to mention the logistical side of things... A single drop-pod depending on sci-fi tech would only carry the gear on the infantry-man himself and maybe a spare first-aid kit, or it could contain enough extra ammo for a few minutes of intense combat.

Considering that your pod slowed to a "survivable" speed at an altitude of ~70 meters, I would set your pod parachute to auto-deploy at no more than 100 meters. This would help avoid hostile ground fire, similar to air force combat landings, while also maintaining troop survival.

I've tried setting them like this, but it really only works in specific circumstances. If the pods begin the drop just a few meters too high up, they will slam into the ground before the chutes can deploy. If the ship drops them over a mountain, they'll crash since there's not enough air to catch the chutes in time. But, most of this could be remedied by just providing explicit instructions, I suppose.

My friend made one similar size, but a little taller to hold a fuel tank and put a atmospheric thruster on the bottom that would automaticly deploy the moment you hit just above the ground, only had enough fuel to stop from max speed to just below the breaking point of blocks, so it wouldnt drop speed so fast, but it would move fairly fast until it hit the ground compared to the shoots on this one which kinda make you a easy target until you hit the ground

    • @StootWorts
      @StootWorts  2 роки тому

Thanks! Though when I started working on this ship like a year or two ago, it had a very derivative design. My best advice is to find a ship you like on the workshop, copy/paste it into your world, then start rebuilding it yourself, but think of your own feature you want to add. In this case, the original design was based off of the IMDC Atlas-Class frigates, but I wanted the bow of the ship to be large enough to fit a gravity cannon. That little change then forced me to come up with my own design solutions even as I was following the design of another ship. Then, I just made hundreds of little incremental changes over the years to get it where it is now, and I'm pretty happy with it.

In the lore of my story, there's a row of tiny thrusters along the bottom edges of the cockpit. But, since blocks in SE don't really allow for that, I just use a parachute that deploys at 500m by default and can be adjusted. I would add thrusters on to it, but the pod is already the absolute largest I could make it and have it still work with this ship.

There is an idea. With the new hinges you could do two or four thruster for accelaration and break.
one or two small hydro tank, burn to get to max speed, turn off, swing them around for break maneuver.
of course needs testing how fast and in relation how high you need to break.
if there is enough fuel left and the pod landed somewhat upright you could get back to orbit and break by swinging the thruster back around.
    the mothership could retrive them
