Mario party DS holds a special place in my heart as being the game i played all the time on the bus to highschool with all the other kids. They introduced me to the game and it made me want the game for myself. Download play allowed me to join everyone on the fun. Truly i was lucky to be able to enjoy 3-4 player games with other people consistantly. I've never had a game where i was able to play with others for so long. The DS was truly special. I should point out that because we played on a bus the vibration of the engines would activate the mic rather unpredictably, which made shortfuse more chaotic and tense. It would often fill the bus with screams and laughter hoping to not get blown up but also wanting the noise to push them just that much further (you can tell at least on one occasion, one of the kids made noise to screw over the other player.) Best days of my school time. Short fuse was unironically a blast to play with so many people (in harsh conditions no less) so i dont care what you say, that game's a 10.

@@marksrecroom BPM definitely has one of the best presentations out of all the boards in the series, and I definitely feel like it captures the spirit of Mario Party quite well. I get your main criticism of the boards being a bit smaller than the console ones, but, as you already said, it makes sense for a handheld entry. Not to mention this was the Mario Party game I grew up with...
@@clurgee4923 The board looks so deceptively beautiful, then they bring out the car. Then you desperately search for a mode or a setting to get rid of the car. Then you realize there’s no escape.
@@nickdegugs7190 absolutely. Always loved the "every man for himself" mentality that Mario party, Mario kart, smash bros. had. Cramming everyone into a car made no sense. Though I never played any of the games in between, I feel like the charm of Mario party sorta died with the DS game. I have one of the party games for the switch, and though it ditched the cars thankfully, I feel like it's lost a lot of its wittiness and charm. If I recall correctly, it's Mario Party Superstars. It's just a callback to some older boards, but it's also lacking any real storyline. I played it for an hour or two with my brother and dropped it because I wasn't invested at all.
Superstars forever enrages me cause they brought back so many minigames that nobody ever wanted to see again, and also butchered Space Land (one of the best boards in the series, mechanically speaking) by having the police cars chase you to a corner of the map and getting you stuck for half the fuckin game with no option for escape but to buy a skeleton key and hope to god nobody lands on a happening space, where in the original it forced everyone onto the diagonal path and made it a frantic dash to avoid getting hit by the coin ray. why they did that will forever be inexplicable to me
imo its by far the best mario party game, i love the setting of being mini in a household enviorment and i love how they balanced the map size, turn limit and how far you can move
I plan to do retrospective like this because damm, Mario Party to me is a super underrated series and i don’t think people give the credit it deserves like with Mario kart, especially the hudson soft era man!!! I’m sorry, i just love this franchise SO MUCH 😅❤
Love your Mario Party videos! One of the few games I really really get excited for when a new entry shows up. Will you be covering the most controversial ones? 9,10, 3DS?
Some things you should know about this game. There’s an unused mode to play with people who had a copy instead of download play. The main reason why it was scrapped is because there’s a bug that overwrites the other data if you use the debug menu. You can cheese most of the mic minigames by just rubbing your finger on the mic for most ds/3ds models, I didn’t own the wiiu version of mpds but I did receive a similar signal when testing the wiiu mic. The one thing that I feel like they should have done was let us play on the tutorial board, it would have been nice to have 3 traditional boards & 3 boards with a gimmick relating to the star. I do think this mario party does share some parallels to mkds. Both are the second handheld games that improves apon the gba game that came before it. Add some new stuff to the series, expand on some of the previous games concepts. Both feel like an end of era, while starting some new trends in the series. Mk ds had the new style of retro tracks and mpds had the new style of bosses.
As a kid this game had so much replay ability. I was always trying to collect new figures and one up myself. And if were with friends or family it was an easy way to play a board game on the go.
I played this game a lot during my childhood, but weirdly enough I've never encountered the hidden block that contained an item, nor the grab bag or block sensor. It must've been very rare. 🤔
the 5 dice block is actually really fun. because you can only use it on yourself is it also used as unlucky punishment that can be given to you. but some players know that it perfect for increasing the chance to land on duel. and then win a few stars. and yes you can control what the price is. it is not random it is actually timing based even though you have to think 3-4 below where it actually show. but it also ends 3-4 blocks away from where you stop it.
I used to play mpds on long car rides with my sister, and it's so nostalgic for me. I played with her a couple of years ago, and she destroyed me with all the stars she got. It was insane.
Dude the story was just perfect. I loved that daisy was hero of the story. Maybe you picked someone else, Luigi or peach. But it was so much fun how it made you feel like the hero for everyone. The boss battles were so much fun and I’m so sad how we never got a good Mario party DS. The Nintendo Mario party is fun but it’s just a remake of the older stages. We need new creative boards and settings
Don’t usually leave comments. But wanted to let you know that i recently have watched a lot of your mario party retrospective and loved them. Most enjoyable and in depth retrospective i’ve seen in a while on youtube!
I'm mindblown. Mario Party DS was my first videogame and through this video I discovered that A) there are items I had never seen before because I never played regular boards with other people B) I haven't seen Hot Shots in at least ten years but I'd believe it if I found out I've never gotten it in fifteen years of owning the game
I have some opinions on the Mario Party DS boards, but here is my ranking: 5. Kamek's Library The board being separate into two smaller boards is one aspect that I dislike. Another is that Kamek only uses 2 spells numbered 8 and 88. I get that it's a small cartridge but a little more variety in spells would have been nice. And on the topic of Kamek, he is the only boss battle that has an extra challenge that players have to deal with before facing him. 4. Toadette's Music Room This is an okay board. Not a big fan of the 5th note charging 30 coins for a star instead of 25. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot that I like or dislike. 3. Wiggler's Garden A fair board to start the story with, and isn't too punishing to new players. 2. Bowser's Pinball Machine It's the aesthetic of the board that gets it this high. Love the Chest of Chance and the Wheel of Wonder, even if they can frustrate players. Bowser controls the right flipper and plunger while Bowser Jr controls the left flipper. 1. DK's Stone Statue The only board with a designated star space instead of stars appearing and reappearing on random blue spaces when they are collected. The beehive and tri-coloured vines were good features.
This was one of the best Mario Party games and I'm not even joking. I was JUST thinking about how much I loved this game as a kid and want to play it again. Like maybe a day or two ago... So this video popping up on my UA-cam home page is scaring my because I only thought it
I have hundreds of memories playing Mario Party DS with my older brother, what an incredible game srsly it was so fun and never gets boring, hell during quarantine we played it again and had a blast 😭
Your vids are so relaxing and interesting to watch and listen to! Im surprised how underrated you are. Have you thought about doing a Paper Mario/ Mario RPG series?
Glad that the "finale" in the title isn't indicating the end of the series. As someone who's played MP9 and Island Tour, I think it'd be fun to give the post-Hudson party games a chance (I admittedly always had a soft spot for them due to their Wii Party influence...)
Agreed! Mario Party 9 has a lot of flaws but is still a great time, and I would love to hear more people discuss the "Wii Party" franchise because I was obsessed with that first game as a kid. I must have played "Board Game Island" a thousand times, and even when I didn't have other people to play multiplayer with I'd just hook up multiple controllers and play against myself lol
One thing I never noticed about this game until recently is that every board has its own host apparently. Wiggler hosts his garden, Toadette hosts her music room, Diddy hosts Donkey Kong’s Stone Statue, Kamek hosts his library, and Bowser hosts his pinball table.
YES, I was hoping our cover this! I made a comment about it on your 8 video Let’s see if you decide to review 9 and 10 as well. I warms hear you trash on them lmao. Keep up the amazing content!
Ah Mario Party DS, my first Mario Party game, I love most of its aspects and it will always hold a special place in my heart, I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but definitely one of my favorites, thanks for making this video, loved your Mario Party series of videos and if this is the end of the series, it was a pleasure joining you through this journey!! P.S. did you know 2 minigames were eliminated in the Korean version of the game?
6:08 you forgot to mention the coin block hex can also spawn as a hidden block, and its rare like the multi-star hidden block or the item hidden block (which i didn't know existed until i watched this video because i never found it)
Mario Party DS was so insane that it became my second favorite in the series. I am surprised that you didn't mention that you could purchase uo to three items in the shop which adds to how crazy this game is. Yeah, the minigames are whatever, but with how small the boards are, really make some intense and out of the wall moments with some of the items and Hexes that deals with Stars. For that, it's a pretty great game imo.
Yeah this game’s economy is nuts. Literally a few hours ago I was playing on Bowser’s Pinball Machine. I ended the game with eight stars, Peach ended the game with almost 300 coins (winning a total of 355 from the Bowser roulette) and Wario ended with roughly 100 coins. Ironically enough I didn’t use a star pipe but I did use and land on a star block hex in the same turn and stars were being stolen left from right. I never knew just how bonkers the economy was as a kid but now that I’m older I realize it’s some great crack
I loved this video, and i actually learned quite a few things about this game despite the fact that I've actually played this game for years since I was a kid and cuz im also a nerd for mario party lol Ive even beaten its story mode twice Ive like never ran into some of these board events (to be fair it was mostly kameks) and i didnt even know that the block sensor existed LOL And yeah the side content was awesome, i used to play the puzzle games for hours On the topic of the following games, tbh the minigames in like 9 and 10 are pretty alright but left behind like almost all of hudson's charm and theming and the boards reek lol
Okay, i thoughjt that mario party ds and 8 were the best ones ive played, i thought it was cause nostalgia, but it makes sense that the developers changed after that, idk how to explin it, but the vibe of mario party 8 and 9 is extremely different
You forgot one thing about the Book Happening Spaces in Kamek’s Library. If two players are on the same Book Happening Space, like one player warped from a different Book Happening Space and another player lands on the EXACT same Book Happening Space that the first player got warped to, then BOTH players will be warped. ProtonJon found that during TRG’s Let’s Play of Mario Party DS.
This was so much fun to play. I think it’s one of the best. I loved the little story because it made you the hero. I loved the traps and since it was portable made it the only game I played with family. And we got COMPETITIVE 😂 such a good game. Sadly all the handheld sequels were not even close to this game
I'd say DS without a shadow of a doubt has the best story mode. Most other stoey modes either get tedious or don't offer enough. Mario Party DS doesn't and you won't be repeating nearly as many minigames as you will in, say, 3's Story Mode.
I remember the donkey kong board. (which allow the player to save up money to buy multiple stars at the same spot and always had the star spot at the same place. i remember saving all the money for the last five turns. because i could just buy myself into the lead if i had alot money. either i get the the bonus during the last five frenzy or the stars cost is made 5 coins instead of 20 so your saved up coins at 105 now is worth 21 stars instead of 5 as it would be worth prior. you won because you saved your money for either getting the 5frenzy bonus. or because the bonus was 5 coins for each star allowing you to bypass all the prior winners who wasted their money before price was cut
The DS really had a lot of fun Mario spinoff games like MK DS and MP DS. Mario Party DS is my favorite in the Mario party series and the story was cute
This game was the one mario party game where i could consistently play with 3 others instead of playing alone. Why? Because in school nearly everyone had a ds 😂 Thank you download play!
to be fair, the ds at the time was one of, if not the most sold console at the time without counting the variations. everyone I knew at the time of the release of this game had a ds. people had more chances to have a ds than a wii in general according to statistics.
I've played this game a ton too, but I never knew about those two duel modes that you can only access with another human player. I am curios if you'll ever do a follow-up retrospective on the Mario Party titles released after Hudson went away, and how they stack up compared to the classic titles.
i wouldn’t knock down the idea of a handheld mario party game. it brings for more unique possibilities having a separate screens (3v1s where the 1 has a different view) and touch pad per person available. when my friends and i would play we would sit around a table. we would be able to see each other expressions and give each other eye contact while playing. maybe i’m a tad bit bias cause we loved playing MPDS, but there’s energy about it that has yet to be replicated by any other mario party.

@@ThePlushLuigiBros2018
Well at least Emile would agree. Jon, I'm not so sure...
Thanks for this ambitious deep dive video! This was the Mario Party game of my childhood! Keep up the good work! ❤
At least it didn’t have a goddamn car.
yeah I remember getting the Mario party for the Wii U and when I first played it my thought was 'wtf happened to this series'
Superstars forever enrages me cause they brought back so many minigames that nobody ever wanted to see again, and also butchered Space Land (one of the best boards in the series, mechanically speaking) by having the police cars chase you to a corner of the map and getting you stuck for half the fuckin game with no option for escape but to buy a skeleton key and hope to god nobody lands on a happening space, where in the original it forced everyone onto the diagonal path and made it a frantic dash to avoid getting hit by the coin ray. why they did that will forever be inexplicable to me
@@nickdegugs7190 Just like the Underworld prince learned, *there is no escape.*
Let's go, Mario Party DS appreciation!
Definitely my favorite in the series due to the minigames alone
Such a joy to see! Love your Mario Party videos!!!
Thanks so much! I hope that you enjoy this episode, it's the longest yet lol
imo its by far the best mario party game, i love the setting of being mini in a household enviorment and i love how they balanced the map size, turn limit and how far you can move
Am I the only one that hasn't seen a block sensor anytime playing this game??
It comes out of a Grab Bag, which you can only buy on the last 5 turns
These reviews are truly awesome and obviously made by someone loving their topic. Thanks for your content !
A thing I loved about the boards is that there is always a section where the boss of the board is located.
I played this game a lot during my childhood, but weirdly enough I've never encountered the hidden block that contained an item, nor the grab bag or block sensor. It must've been very rare. 🤔
I played this game twice, and both times were for over 6 hours and I remember losing everything
the 5 dice block is actually really fun. because you can only use it on yourself is it also used as unlucky punishment that can be given to you. but some players know that it perfect for increasing the chance to land on duel. and then win a few stars. and yes you can control what the price is. it is not random it is actually timing based even though you have to think 3-4 below where it actually show. but it also ends 3-4 blocks away from where you stop it.
Love your analytical look at the series, you've taught me a lot
I used to play mpds on long car rides with my sister, and it's so nostalgic for me. I played with her a couple of years ago, and she destroyed me with all the stars she got. It was insane.
MPDS is the best mario party ever, the amount of characters, the boards, the minigames, the story mode, all perfection
These Mario Party Retrospectives were so good and well thoughtout thank you
1 thing i will say about the duel mechanics in 8 that makes it better than 7 is that u can time the wheel
I love the limited 3D they used for this game, it’s so charming!
I CAN NEVER ESCAPE
I'm mindblown. Mario Party DS was my first videogame and through this video I discovered that
A) there are items I had never seen before because I never played regular boards with other people
B) I haven't seen Hot Shots in at least ten years but I'd believe it if I found out I've never gotten it in fifteen years of owning the game
I have some opinions on the Mario Party DS boards, but here is my ranking:
5. Kamek's Library
The board being separate into two smaller boards is one aspect that I dislike. Another is that Kamek only uses 2 spells numbered 8 and 88. I get that it's a small cartridge but a little more variety in spells would have been nice. And on the topic of Kamek, he is the only boss battle that has an extra challenge that players have to deal with before facing him.
4. Toadette's Music Room
This is an okay board. Not a big fan of the 5th note charging 30 coins for a star instead of 25. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot that I like or dislike.
3. Wiggler's Garden
A fair board to start the story with, and isn't too punishing to new players.
2. Bowser's Pinball Machine
It's the aesthetic of the board that gets it this high. Love the Chest of Chance and the Wheel of Wonder, even if they can frustrate players. Bowser controls the right flipper and plunger while Bowser Jr controls the left flipper.
1. DK's Stone Statue
The only board with a designated star space instead of stars appearing and reappearing on random blue spaces when they are collected. The beehive and tri-coloured vines were good features.
This was one of the best Mario Party games and I'm not even joking. I was JUST thinking about how much I loved this game as a kid and want to play it again. Like maybe a day or two ago... So this video popping up on my UA-cam home page is scaring my because I only thought it
I have hundreds of memories playing Mario Party DS with my older brother, what an incredible game srsly it was so fun and never gets boring, hell during quarantine we played it again and had a blast 😭
camera shy was always my favourite mingame
Your videos are great quality. Keep up the great work!
My siblings and I played this for probably hundreds of hours, thanks for the nostalgia trip lol
Mario party ds is the first Mario party game I’ve played and seeing this brings me nostalgia ❤️
Your vids are so relaxing and interesting to watch and listen to! Im surprised how underrated you are. Have you thought about doing a Paper Mario/ Mario RPG series?
A lot of people forget that ND Cube is made up mostly of old Hudson Soft developers.
You never played Story Mode?
@@AkameGaKillfan777 I never got past Wiggler’s Garden because Feed and Seed was fucking impossible to 9 year old me
@@Imirui How?
@@AkameGaKillfan777 9 year old me can't button mash as fast as the 3rd phase of it wanted me to

Loved this Mario party on the ds so much as a kid
koopa's tycoon town is peak mario party
YES, I was hoping our cover this! I made a comment about it on your 8 video
Let’s see if you decide to review 9 and 10 as well.
This is a great video man I really enjoyed playing this game as a kid. I have one memory where I was playing this on a long car ride good times
I loved this video, and i actually learned quite a few things about this game despite the fact that I've actually played this game for years since I was a kid and cuz im also a nerd for mario party lol
Ive even beaten its story mode twice
Ive like never ran into some of these board events (to be fair it was mostly kameks) and i didnt even know that the block sensor existed LOL
And yeah the side content was awesome, i used to play the puzzle games for hours
On the topic of the following games, tbh the minigames in like 9 and 10 are pretty alright but left behind like almost all of hudson's charm and theming and the boards reek lol
Will agree its hard to get 4 ds together today but back in the day it wasn't
Okay, i thoughjt that mario party ds and 8 were the best ones ive played, i thought it was cause nostalgia, but it makes sense that the developers changed after that, idk how to explin it, but the vibe of mario party 8 and 9 is extremely different
Dang mario party ds nostalgia is real, i remember when this was on 7000-8000 views a few days ago
Something I feel should have been brought up is the music in this game.
57:03 Imagine these characters using voice lines from Mario Party 10.
The D.S. Mario Party is my favorite Mario party tied with 6.
Oh damn i forgot about mario party ds. I used to love this game!
You forgot one thing about the Book Happening Spaces in Kamek’s Library. If two players are on the same Book Happening Space, like one player warped from a different Book Happening Space and another player lands on the EXACT same Book Happening Space that the first player got warped to, then BOTH players will be warped. ProtonJon found that during TRG’s Let’s Play of Mario Party DS.
very nice video, cant wait for the next
48:16 Mario Party 1 has a similar mode where you pick a list of purchased minigames and whoever has the most coins at the end wins.
(which allow the player to save up money to buy multiple stars at the same spot and always had the star spot at the same place.
i remember saving all the money for the last five turns. because i could just buy myself into the lead if i had alot money.
either i get the the bonus during the last five frenzy
or the stars cost is made 5 coins instead of 20
so your saved up coins at 105 now is worth 21 stars instead of 5 as it would be worth prior.
you won because you saved your money for either getting the 5frenzy bonus. or because the bonus was 5 coins for each star allowing you to bypass all the prior winners who wasted their money before price was cut
BRING THIS SERIES BACK
Man, I love this game. So nostalgic
With "Gimme coins!" If you have less that 20 coins, he'll ask 10. Which is, is 10 or ALL of your remaining coins.
this game had boss fights as a series first on every board in story mode and a bit more plot than usual mario party
Mario Party DS is my favourite Nintendo Game
I played it so often when I was younger and I still need to defeat Bowser in the Adventure Mode😂
The DS really had a lot of fun Mario spinoff games like MK DS and MP DS. Mario Party DS is my favorite in the Mario party series and the story was cute
Wow. Your ranking is nearly identical to mine, except DS goes between 3 and 7 for me.
really well made video, i really enjoyed it :)
this is the best mario party game hands down.
This should have been the final Mario party game
Dude…this video is awesome
Thanks a bunch, i appreciate it!!
Bomberman should have been a guest character in at least 1 of the game.
this game is so fun. a shame two of the best side modes are locked behind download play
Now that Apple has allowed retro games via Delta, I play this game often on my iPhone! Very underrated Mario Party game!! Cant wait for Jamboree!!
This game was the one mario party game where i could consistently play with 3 others instead of playing alone. Why? Because in school nearly everyone had a ds 😂
Thank you download play!
This was the Mario party I played the most
to be fair, the ds at the time was one of, if not the most sold console at the time without counting the variations. everyone I knew at the time of the release of this game had a ds. people had more chances to have a ds than a wii in general according to statistics.
Kamek's Library in Story Mode
-inhales- AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
Sigh
I actually like kameks library
