6:00 Fun fact: This is because of the way item shops work. In this game (and all future hudson soft games, barring DS) it will only show you items that you can afford. However, this happens after it rolls for all the items in the shop. If it rolls for an item and it is one you can’t afford, it gets swapped for a mushroom (or Twice Candy in 8). This means that if you have 5-9 coins the item shop will almost always be filled with mushrooms, since it rolled 2-3 times and got items you can’t afford.
Honestly, this is where I'd find Bowser stealing Stars in his space at night to be OK, since we have an exact opposite with DK at day. It really reinforces that polar opposite situation and honestly. You'd have as much of a chance of Bowser stealing Stars randomly as much as DK giving you Stars via the roulette, so in my opinion it's balanced very well in my opinion. And besides. Since there's more of these spaces per board than just one, you can actually fight from getting in that space at night and embrace it at day.
I have to disagree about Clockwork Castle. The entire point of the map is to get away from Bowser. It makes sense if Bowser steals a star if Donkey Kong is how you get them in the first place. It wouldn't really be punishing if you lost coins instead of stars especially if you have a hefty wallet from stealing from others or just being good at the game. I get that Bowser stealing stars is a bad thing on OTHER boards since it has nothing to do with the map's gimmick, but on Clockwork Castle it makes complete sense.
Clockwork Castle is actually one of my favorite boards in Mario party six, the fact that Bowser steals a star from you was actually great, because it means that you don’t want to be really close to donkey Kong all the time because the next turn might be having him turn around to get you. The pipes also make getting short cuts really interesting, and lead to some quick escapes or quick catches a donkey Kong. Also, the having two lanes is really important because you might want to avoid Bowser by taking a different path at slightly longer so that you don’t go in front of him, it’s all about spacing.
☀️Mario Party 6🌙 was the based entry to this day for me. I loved the Day & Night Mechanic on all the Boards, and having certain minigames have unique rules based on the time of day is such a unique detail that I enjoyed! Fond memories, still the best for me!
@@Nathan-fo4ux It's honestly my favorite board, especially if you play with everybody starting with like 5 stars or so, because then no matter what, running into bowser means losing a star
Agreed Bowser is evil he's supposed to take all our stars & coins I love the luck aspect even more the telling my friends to deal with it when I make off with everything 😂
One interesting aspect about orbs that you didn't mention was how you and other orbs are affected. Tile orbs change the tile itself (almost) permanently and give 5 coins if you land on one you own rather than the usual 3. This means that not only could you potentially repeatedly get multiple rewards from a single orb, rewards that usually steal coins or other resources from whoever landed on it for yourself, but you could also put it on a red space and never worry about losing coins from that space, you would actually GET coins from that space instead. However, other players could always use an orb on that space and change it themselves. On the other hand, roadblock orbs are single use traps that will only ever hinder one player max, and in a way that very rarely rewards the owner with anything; plus the space under it isn’t affected, so if you put it on a red space you still lose coins from it. However, they can not be overwritten. The only way a roadblock can be removed is to activate it; so you can put traps that force players to stop or lose coins in unavoidable paths to the star, and ONE player will be forced to spring it. It may be a douche move, but there are no friends in Mario Party, plus, that's why they made the Metal Shroom as a trap-guard. Tiles are stronger, but requires players to land on them and can be lost. Roadblocks are unavoidable if placed well and unchangeable, but typically less make-or-break game changers. It all comes together to create a sense of strategy as to where and why you put orbs. I really miss this orb feature.
Yes! I think you're the only one who has acknowledged the fantastic side mode Speak Up! It's as much fun if you use the controller option instead of the Mic. Mario Party 6 is my favorite MP, the selection of minigames, boards and side content are superb. Add to all that a unique game changing central mechanic like a day-night cycle and voilá! Also, big shoutouts to the fun bonus minigames like the maze one or Dunk Bros.! Next up is Mario Party 7, an interesting and fun new entry. Can't wait for your character ranking due to the special orbs lol
Thanks so much for watching!! Speak Up really surprised me in retrospect with how fun it actually wound up being. In general I really like the way that Mario Party 6 implemented the microphone, it was used in a really smart way where the game is completely playable without it, but it adds charm in some neat side content. I’m looking forward to continuing this series so thanks so much for supporting it!!
Mario party 6 is the game in the entire series that deserves a remake for the switch the most. Apart from adding more minigames and maybe another board, these are some of the changes I would do (Btw I would really appreciate if you replied to this comment): 1. Increase the price of some of the orbs (like they did in Mario Party 7) 2. In faire square, a star should never cost more than 30 coins, since you can get stars for 5 coins and it's easy to get stars with the hat shuffle event. 3. In Clockwork Castle and Castaway Bay, Bowser should steal 20 coins instead of a star. Maybe in Castaway Bay if you don't have 20 coins to give him, he should take a star instead, and if you also don't have a star then he just takes all your remainder coins.
Thanks for watching! I’d love it if Mario Party 6 was used as a base for a Superstars 2 that was more geared around Gamecube content (or hey, maybe just a new mario party that uses what works in 6 as a base), but I like your changes here. I do like the brutal nature of 40 coin stars in Faire Square, but hey overall i’d just love it if Mario Party 6 was playable on Switch in SOME capacity lol. Thanks for watching!
@@marksrecroom I don't think NDCube can actually make a completely new and great Mario Party. I mean their best game was Superstars, which you could say was made by Hudson Soft, and they still managed to downgrade it with their few changes, like for example putting 15+ lucky spaces in every board that give you too many coins and making items too cheap, thus worsening the economy and making 2v2 minigames extremely rare.
I wish I'd have played 6 as a child. The last Mario Party I experienced as a little kid was 5. And while I still think 5 is better, I can't deny that 6 did a lot to improve on 5's mechanics.
Very late but happy to see MP6 getting a great video to cover it! Yeah, it's still my favorite MP I think: the graphics are old but still charming; the gameplay isn't as janky as the N64 ones; it doesn't go full psycho like MP9/10 with innovation, but it's still packed with content (unlike the recent ones that skimp on boards and whatnot); and all the mechanics in the Gamecube ones that were rough in the edges (like the capsules you mentioned) are ironed out here. Overall, it's still insanely replayable. Loved the video, you highlighted every good part of it, and I'm shocked to see how much I agreed with the board ranking lol.
Thanks so much for watching!! I agree - Mario Party 6 does a great job of packing a lot of the brilliance of what made the previous games fun and polished it, from the item system to the board layouts. It’s definitely one of my favorites to replay with friends to this day lol.
The absolute best Mario Party as far as I'm concerned. Fantastic minigames, the day night cycle, best item system, and the boards are just perfection. It's my most played Mario Party and likely one of my most played games period. Best minigame is Snow Whirled btw, but I'm also very fond of What Goes Up... And basically any of the cleaning games. Fantastic video as always Mark. I wish you had more subs and views but I get to experience your videos.
Thanks so much for watching and supporting this series!! also fantastic minigame selections as well - there’s just so much that Mario Party 6 does extremely well
It is your opinion, however I really hate how "Bowser steals stars" is a "harsh" punishment. If he didn't steal stard then there's not only nothing to catch a player if they slip up, but what would Bowser do? Steal coins? Coins are useless especially if the leading player has a lot of them
Despite Bowser stealing stars being a unfair punishment, I always have a blast playing MP6 whether 20, 30, 40 or heck even 50 turns since this game is pretty quick and to the point like 2, and 3. Minigames can varied by each, but it’s still a decent selections. Boards in my opinion are one of the consistent selections in any MPs, and there isn’t one board I outright disliked and fun enjoyment in any of them (yes even Castaway Bay lol). If MP5 manage to introduced new items mechanic, but failed to execute them, 6 manage to improved them, while having more decisions in your vessel than just getting one on random. 6 is not perfect, but it’s the one Mario Party I enjoy the most for how innovate, and strategic it can get, and this review is a great way to describe the game. It’s by far my favorite MP.
Orb Star is fine but I think you're selling Coin Star a bit short. I really like the decision making that the Coin Star allows. The player with the most coins will essentially set the bar for what the Coin Star will be, and there's a risk/reward to when they want to "cash out". If I have 100 coins, and I run into Boo, I might feel secure that I've reached the Coin Star, and go for the star steal, but now that I've lost a substantial amount of coins I'm risking another player surpassing my coin goal, with me at the disadvantage. Another player currently at 80 might be able to surpass my record and keep me at bay for the rest of the game. And while its true that I might have accumulated my wealth through minigame skill, we all know there's plenty of silly ways to suddenly get rich in Mario Party lol. There's an added panic where I might have the Coin Star currently on lock but I'm not confident I'll be able to crawl my way back to the top once I dip significantly below the set record. Granted, the Orb Star does have some advantages. One could argue that Coin Star forces me to play more turtley, and the Orb Star encourages me to engage more with the game's mechanics (orbs), so I don't think its a strict downgrade. But ideally, a player should be using their orbs often anyway, so I don't think it adds the same extra decision that the Coin Star provides.
@@marksrecroom I know some of my comments about various minigames may seem intense, but these videos are good, like really good. You have a lot of great analysis here.
10:30 You can’t choose to buy a star if DK runs into you. You WILL buy the star. You don’t even have a choice you’re just guaranteed to say yes to, you are just handed the star and robbed of 20 coins.
Wonderful description of this game! I love Mario Party 6 a lot too but I think I like Mario Party 7 just a little bit better because of the 8-player mode. But what I don't like so much about the Duel Minigames in Mario Party 6 is that there are too many luck-based ones, just as in Mario Party 5 too. Especially Get a Rope from MP5 almost plays exactly the same as Pitifall from MP6. And regarding the Orb system they repeated the formula with Orbs and Candy in MP7 and 8. There are still shops where you can buy Orbs/pieces of Candy and spaces where you get random ones for free.
1:00 While this is the last version of chance time you will see (until superstars) I definitely believe it’s at one of its worst incarnations here. This game and 5’s versions of it are both rigged in favor of one side. The version in 5 has nearly every trade that isn’t a swap benefit the left side (the only one I’ve seen that benefits the right side is 20 coins to right, only the left can steal a star or 2, along with the give 20 coins to left) but at least it made sense because if you used it on yourself you would be set to the favored side immediately. In this game, it’s impossible for the right side to lose anything outside of swaps. There are 6 trades you can choose from in the game. Asides from the 3 swap trades, there’s the right side taking 20 coins, a star, or 2 stars from the left side. There’s literally 0 trades that benefit the left side exclusively. Unlike in 5, there’s no reason to favor the right side, as both are decided at random.
If you're gonna review Mario Party 7 next, I have an idea for a title. Maybe it can be called "A Sailing Experience" since the game revolves around characters being on a cruise boat. ^^
Mario Party 6 is interesting to me. Throughout my child and teen years, I saw a lot of people talk about how 6 was when the series started to decline in quality, myself included. Nowadays though, I see so many people say how this is the best game in the series. I'm very much a Mario Party 3 guy myself, but with hindsight, I can see why others feel that way. This entry really does innovate with new ideas without taking away from the core, which is what 4 and 5 struggled with. It's a very weird entry for me though, because it doesn't really do anything wrong, but doesn't do anything that exceptional either. The minigames are good, but nothing spectacular. What Goes Up, Pokey Punch-Out, Catch You Letter, and Daft Rafts are all pretty solid, but they're certainly no Pushy Penguins, that's for sure. The side modes are alright, but nothing special. Although this video did awaken a core memory on how much I enjoyed Speak Up. The boards are consistently strong though, with my favorite being Snowflake Lake for the aesthetic and gimmick. And I won't argue against the orbs being a massive improvement. This is just a really solid Mario Party that I never take the time to think about much. I should probably give it a proper replay sometime soon.
Thanks for watching!! your perspective here is really interesting - while i obviously have lots of praise for Mario Party 6, Mario Party 3 also has lots of brilliance packed into it and it’s one of my personal favorites to go back to. I think for a lot of people, Mario Party 6 marked the point where it may have felt like the series was getting oversaturated, being the third game on the Gamecube with Mario Party Advance and 7 following not even a full year later. and while Mario Party 6 might be my favorite that we’ve covered, I think there’s a strong argument for Mario Party 3 for sure. Its fantastic item system alone simply cannot be ignored. Thanks so much as always for supporting this series!
They replaced Coin Star with Orb Star specifically because orbs can now give you coins, and you can get coins for landing on orb spaces, on top of lots of board events making it easy to get a lot of coins.
Great video! Been loving this series so far. Any chance you can share the music list for the songs used? In particular, the song at around the 7:00 min mark is so groovy. Is that persona I sense?
Yo thanks so much I appreciate it!! I don’t have the full list handy at the moment but i can definitely let you know what that song is - it’s “Let’s Produce the No. 1 Hostess!” from Yakuza 3!
I really wish the orb system from 6 and 7 returned in Jamboree as the hexes are a great edition but not enough to counter the high quantity of lucky spaces. Boo huts help but with more coin and star stealing orbs you can throw on a space, in my opinion will help with this issue.
thanks so much for watching!! If you like Mario Party 4, I’d definitely recommend that you give 6 a shot too. It’s incredibly fun and easy to get into with a group of friends for sure.
10 out of 10 video, sir! It's been a long time since I've played this game. Am I correct in thinking that the mic is not required at any point in MP6? 17:50 WHAT?! 🤣
Thanks so much for watching!! yes you’re completely correct, this game is 100% playable without the microphone, which really makes the mic less obtrusive and more fun in its own right.
Although I'm 18 and most of my life it's been Xbox one and switch, my childhood was full of Xbox 360 and GameCube, my all time favorite games are destroy all humans path of furon(Xbox 360) and Mario party 5 and 6 (GameCube) had tons of hame systems and a PC but all I ever do are play retro games lol
3:47 Funny thing, bc it was made to be unfair, you have to rely on luck, not on skill, thats why you can have those kinds of punishments all of a sudden, of you have bad luck, you will lose I actually LOVE all those things, but i dont have anyone to play with :/
It’s in the works! It’s longer than the previous episodes so it’s taking some time but I’m hoping to get it out soon. And yes, my plan is to go all the way up through Superstars, handhelds and all!
Mp 5 was like an incomplete cake recipe and 6 really does feel like it completed that recipe, after playing this game i legit cant play 5 for more than 2 50 turn games, not to knock on 5 of course but if feels like 6 does everything better than 5,i lwgit tried to say 1 thing i liked better in 5 than 6 and i came up with the jingle in the instructions before the minigame
You've gotta be trolling when you said snow whirled utilizes the GC controller button layout well. If you roll up to a game of snow whirled with almost any alternate controller, you'll win easily. In fact is it not a common joke that the layout of the original controller is actually really bad for the minigame? Lol
ok, first off, The hell do you mean clockwork castle is the worst? The whole point of the board is chasing DK and running from bowser, If you can’t run away from bowser you get the star penalty, that’s totally fair! Second, Faire square is actually broken, If anything it’s the worst board from Mario Party 6, I know it’s an opinion but come on! Clockwork castle is better then Snowflake Lake, Castaway Bay, and especially Faire Square, No way man, the most shit takes i’ve ever seen since that one mario kart track ranking.
Wow, this video was painful to watch: 1. I know it's just an opinion, but Clockwork Castle is my favorite board in the game. 2. Talkie Walkie is easy for the mic player?! If you're on the mic, the game is actually impossible! What are you smoking?! And several other shit takes that I can't even count. Overall, it's a good video, but some of these opinions just drove me up a goddamn wall.
25:32 you lose me hardcore here, Gondola Glide is an #8....that game sucks! I think a lot of your ratings are based on your own opinion. Remember some people out here aren't crazy about button mashers. Button Mashers aren't great for your hands (carpal tunnel) or the controllers. 20+ seconds of button mashing is borderline last place for any minigame for me.
I briefly played this game and Mario Party 7 as a Christmas present I got on eBay in 2016 and I played it whilst listening to Markiplier videos of him playing horror games. There wasn't much I took away from it other than it was the first time since I played Mario Party DS with my friends that I was actually getting coins to buy some Stars. Of the ten original games Hudson Soft made (Mario Party Advance and Mario Party DS included), I think that this is the only one of the ten that seemed to be the most polished because its approach was more accessible and calmer than in Mario Party 7 as that game was full of filler that I'm sure a lot of people would have wanted to avoid when playing a game. I don't think it's iconic as Mario Party DS because there isn't a story mode that I would've wanted to try, but it did a good job at making me teary eyed when I watched the ending cutscene. Something that I think Mario Party Superstars missed the mark on.
Thanks so much for watching!! What’s your favorite Mario Party 6 minigame?

Thanks so much for watching!! i’m so glad to hear that you enjoy, there’s more mario party analyses coming for sure haha
Why wouldn't anyone want a star?
Great video. Appreciate that Yakuza music you put in the video. XD
To quote Brent: Mass Meteor? MORE LIKE ASS METEOR bro!
If you're gonna review Mario Party 7 next, I have an idea for a title. Maybe it can be called "A Sailing Experience" since the game revolves around characters being on a cruise boat. ^^
Top 6 Boards:
6- Snowflake Lake
5- Clockwork Castle
4- Castaway Bay
3- Towering Treetop
2- E. Gadd's Garage
1- Faire Square
You'll know i'll wi- YOU'RE LOUSY!!! The taunt button is so damn funny.
They replaced Coin Star with Orb Star specifically because orbs can now give you coins, and you can get coins for landing on orb spaces, on top of lots of board events making it easy to get a lot of coins.
classic mark haha w
thank you my brother 🙏
Great video! Been loving this series so far. Any chance you can share the music list for the songs used? In particular, the song at around the 7:00 min mark is so groovy. Is that persona I sense?
Yo thanks so much I appreciate it!! I don’t have the full list handy at the moment but i can definitely let you know what that song is - it’s “Let’s Produce the No. 1 Hostess!” from Yakuza 3!
@@marksrecroom of course!! And amazing, thanks so much 😄 keep up the good work!
I really wish the orb system from 6 and 7 returned in Jamboree as the hexes are a great edition but not enough to counter the high quantity of lucky spaces. Boo huts help but with more coin and star stealing orbs you can throw on a space, in my opinion will help with this issue.
The best mario party game bar none and the one me and my friends and siblings came back to the most
I managed to get Mario party 4 as one of my first Gamecube games. Now to get this one. It sounds quite good based on your review.
thanks so much for watching!! If you like Mario Party 4, I’d definitely recommend that you give 6 a shot too. It’s incredibly fun and easy to get into with a group of friends for sure.
@@marksrecroom I'll bet. Just gotta find it in a reasonable price first 👌👌
23:37 and note to self has a night version where there is only one big note ball
Uh no. There's still 3.
the Absolute Best Mario Party Game On The Gamecube
Trap & Roadblock orbs are the only orbs that matters
The best board on the game it’s your least favorite??? Hmm
I just bought mario party 6 and im existed to play it with my friend's
Although I'm 18 and most of my life it's been Xbox one and switch, my childhood was full of Xbox 360 and GameCube, my all time favorite games are destroy all humans path of furon(Xbox 360) and Mario party 5 and 6 (GameCube) had tons of hame systems and a PC but all I ever do are play retro games lol
3:47
Funny thing, bc it was made to be unfair, you have to rely on luck, not on skill, thats why you can have those kinds of punishments all of a sudden, of you have bad luck, you will lose
I actually LOVE all those things, but i dont have anyone to play with :/
The copers who want Bowser to steal stars is hilarious
Is your MP7 analysis dropping soon? Are you planning to go up until Superstars?
Still the best in the series, even after Jamboree. Just wish it had online and at least one more board
28:06 Banana Shake should be a 1 or a 2 max.
You've gotta be trolling when you said snow whirled utilizes the GC controller button layout well. If you roll up to a game of snow whirled with almost any alternate controller, you'll win easily. In fact is it not a common joke that the layout of the original controller is actually really bad for the minigame? Lol
21:30 this is what we need. Someone to debunk the myth that Mario Party 6 has great minigames all around.
May I know the song used @ 6:52?
Let’s Produce the No. 1 Hostess! - Yakuza 3 OST
@@marksrecroom you’re the best! Love your channel by the way!☺️
9.2/10 video
ok, first off, The hell do you mean clockwork castle is the worst? The whole point of the board is chasing DK and running from bowser, If you can’t run away from bowser you get the star penalty, that’s totally fair! Second, Faire square is actually broken, If anything it’s the worst board from Mario Party 6, I know it’s an opinion but come on! Clockwork castle is better then Snowflake Lake, Castaway Bay, and especially Faire Square, No way man, the most shit takes i’ve ever seen since that one mario kart track ranking.
Why are L and R mashers “gross”
Maybe because it's more awkward and difficult to mash on the shoulder button?
13:40
Wow, this video was painful to watch:
