Mario Party 9 marks a dramatic shift in the Mario Party series history. It is a notable turning point in a number of ways, most infamously that it was the first game in the Mario Party series that wasn’t developed by its original developer, Hudson Soft since Hudson was dissolved into Konami in 2012. Mario Party 9, while numerically in line with the rest of the games leading up to this point, is a complete left turn from the long-established formula, although this change doesn’t completely come from nowhere. So, what inspired the team at ND Cube to change things up when they took the helm, and did it work out in their favor? Well, welcome back to Mark’s Rec Room, with this long Mario Party 9 review and retrospective! Hopefully whether you love this game, hate it, or are somewhere in the middle, you have fun watching this behemoth of a video. for ne the main thing i dont like is just how goddamn ugly it looks. still, love this game due to the memories it has helped make for me and my loved ones. i remember i would play as peach so bowser would go easy on me haha. excited to watch this video :)
I guess I’m probably one of the few who loved Flash Focus as a kid.. I used to treat that, Brain Age and Big Brain Academy as the Big 3.
Rewatching this video after binging the entire series up to MP9, I've got to say... It feels odd, like, really odd. We, here, have not only a great basic minigame set, even when compared with other games in the franchise, but even a custom set, still an exclusivity to MP4, even with Jamboree in the picture! Yet, the board gameplay itself kind of... ruins it? Okay, Shy Guy's Jungle Jam truly feels like a "rule-breaking oddity", as it is well-thought, even with the Mega Mushroom "uninteractibality" taken into account with those long stretches of nothing which lead into those "circles of interest" at the top-left and top-right of the board. Could said boards have been designed before the item selection was finished? For it feels like it at times... When I suggest we play a Mario Party game, I often bring up MP4 not out of nostalgia - bought my copy at around 21 years old - but out of SGJJ just being... a really, really good board when taking the entire series into account, the minigame list being just this good despite the chances of repeats. But it just reminds me of my sad opinion on the MP series: there is no perfect game, nor will there ever be one, as each game balances its mechanics differently, brings something different to the formula, thus creating a wonderful menu, one which can satisfy almost all players, but every meal has a little something that you wish you could take to create *the* MP game for yourself. 'Tis truly is both the miracle and curse of that series. Thanks for the videos!
I played Snowflake Lake for the first time a few months ago and asked myself, after playing this, how could anyone possibly complain about Bowser's Warped Orbit.
Bro complains about the Vampire Candy being underwhelming while saying that Cashzap & Thwomp Candy don't reward the player for using them.
Could you do a Mario party island tour video?
The new Pocket camp complete app is behind a pay wall.
The problem is that most players won’t move that consistently in the same spots
I just realized the title is a pun
Rip to Zombie Tag. Everyone loves it except for you.
Once agin, i come to say, Technique changes what kind of of inputs you need to preform when spraying grafitti and the amount of points you get are higher for the more complex one, seeing as grafiitti just changes the amount of cans you can hold.
The way you play og jet set radio is to tag big pieces first before going back through for the smaller ones.
MP9 was the first (and currently only) Mario Party I ever played, so it was quite a surprise to me when I learned that enjoying MP9 was a bit of a hot take compared to other Mario Parties. I saw another comment saying that if the car was a separate mode rather than the only mode it wouldn't've been so frowned upon and I'm inclined to agree. I like the car mechanic but I do wish that the normal gameplay was still at least present
This was a really great video that expertly explains why MP9 (and the car in general) doesn’t work, while also giving credit to the areas of the game that do have good ideas (and they are there). I’ve never played Wii Party, but seeing its influence definitely explains many of this game’s issues and why they committed so heavily to that blasted car. And above all else, I have to give credit to the devs for trying something new, even if it makes me question whether the playtesters actually enjoyed the game much… It almost makes me want to give the game another chance in spite of its shortcomings, for old time’s sake. Maybe someday…even if it gives me flashbacks to the “Dark Ages” of Mario Party that we are FINALLY starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel from. At least it’s not as bad as 10, which is one of the worst games I’ve ever played (although 10 has Flash Forward, which I would literally pay like $15 for that minigame alone)
I like how the only way I remember this game exists is shaking a soda can
Ngl, i don't think the car is a terrible idea. (Won't lie tho never played but have watched a few videos in the past) I think it'd be awesome if there was a kart themed boards while having regular boards and the karts being individual and you can unlock skins for them and the carts could have more spaces to move to simulate kart but with strategy in mind and you can knock enemies back like say in the board game SORRY or TROUBLE. I'd think there would be a really cool mechanic to it and maybe kart themed mini games.
They weren't cut out as intended characters. All the MPs for the gamecube are pretty much a modded version of MP4. So it's a relict from MP5/MP6 that hasn't been fully removed.
The Mario party of my childhood I loved this game and still do 😊
Bro called my favorites games boring
I always loved this game
30:11 I LOVE MY FRIENDS AND I LOVE MARIO PARTY
They always declined my application for a job at Nintendo Cube 😢
Wii Party music lowkey fire though
I only know this game from the story about the shoes in the pillows
de la jet set radio definitely was an apology to Japan
Never did I think I'd be looking back at the early 2000s with the same nostalgia that my parents do with the 70s. Im in love with y2k music, games, aesthetic, and lighthearted vibe. Don't take me back, just meet me here in 2025 ;)
Excellent analysis Mr. Haha! I've never played MP9, but I don't think I'd be too interested in it. If I play it in the future, then it will be solely for the good minigames and Garden Battle. I'm impressed by your ability to weigh the positives and negatives of a lack-luster game. Cheers to another great video! 1:14:39 ARE THEY PUTTING BROCCOLI ON THE PIZZA???
I wish I could play 2 again. God I miss it.
My favorite Mario Party
I remember playing this game from start to finish as a kid , one of the first games that really pulled me into at that time the way it did . I already loved hip hop and art and anime so this game was super appealing in a unique way , and it helped me to embrace all those things that I liked
i actually think the animal tracks pathways were nice, and the way they did it in new leaf was how city folk should've done it. the dirt path in new horizons didn't have the natural feel/look that the animal tracks did--the entire island was green unless you did something, which added into the game feeling unnatural in look, feel, and interactions. hope we get the best of all worlds in the next game.
I liked this video and I use it to help me sleep :) commenting to boost your standing in the algorithm!
To be fair for #8 and #3: It might occasionally happen, that Bowser and Bowser Jr. interfere and give you Dark Mini Stars, dependent on whether your dice roll fits with them or whether you get a Bingo after the Intervention or not.
This game was my Silksong. I was super hyped for it. Didn’t even bother after the negative reception. Golf Story remains a Top 10 Switch exclusive for me.
i can't imagine the animal tracks being worse in city folk, since it's by far my least favorite thing in new leaf. i didn't visit my town for NINE MONTHS and i still had dirt patches!!! that's just ridiculous
at some point you oughta try the mass media party trilogy (shrek super party pac man fever and muppets party cruise)
Wow I'm really surprised by the Duel Mode hate! I love that mode, and most of my friends do as well! Sure, it's extremely far removed from standard Mario Party. It feels like Hudson Soft had a completely new idea for a board game and couldn't find anywhere else to put it. And yes, it can take a bit to get your head around. But it's fun! Play a few rounds with your friends, they're very quick, and you'll both get a hang of the rules and strategy quick enough!
I love your videos btw, and you have a nice voice :) You format these videos incredibly well, it never feels like it drags on too long, yet has a thorough coverage of everything. Keep up the good work <3
Please continue the Identifying Luck style video that ZoomZike started. You are a very good creator and willing to do parties past the first 8 console games
When I was a kid, I had a fever that was pretty high. I never played this game or heard of it and I swear I had a vivid dream where I had this game and I played it. But when I woke up I thought the game wasn't real. Why did this game invade my dreams? I still have never played it
They were probably desperate to throw a Mario Party on the market for the Wii launch. That's why this game is aweful in terms of variety and graphics.
We stan the Scaredy Rat. He is the true main character.
I remember learning about this in City Folk. Decided immediately to create a "path" pattern and lay it along the ground along what would be the preferred pathways. It seemed to help for the bit I was playing City Folk afterward and helped as a preventative measure in New Leaf.
The idea of a semi-open explorable world is getting quite the liking by Nintendo. Look at Mario Odyssey, Zelda BoTW and ToK, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
one day this is gonna cause a redirect to a porn link
So glad you’re growing! Your videos are so high quality and have a charm to them similar to Nintendo’s
As someone who played MP9 a ton as a kid, I love how Bowser’s boss minigame has the epicest setup ever Planets swirling around you, a giant Bowser staring you down, blasting fireballs for you to dodge, and bringing back every (major) boss you’ve seen so far and the main gameplay… is throwing dice and hoping it lands on you
Even though I’m so biased since this was my first Mario party I can get a lot of the points (live laugh love koopas tycoon town)
