- In the summer of 2009, Severna Park director Dan Gvozden and a group of locals gathered to address the growing rate of teen suicide in their neighborhood. With the help of over 400 volunteers and generous donors the "Empty Seat PSA" was born. Please spread the word and help make it so that there are no more empty seats. The best way to prevent teen suicide is to tell someone about it.

My friend kept telling me she was going to kill herself, and eventually I told our school counselor that I was concerned. Her parents were contacted, she was taken into therapy, and she looks happier then she has in a while, but she refuses to spend anytime with me anymore. At first she was so upset she was going to fight me, and she yelled at me a lot, and would lash out all the time at me. It’s been a couple years, and I still see her around. We’re not friends, and I don’t think that we ever will be again, but I think she’s happier and healthier for what I did. Even though I lost my friendship with her, I didn’t have to lose her, and I have no regrets about what it at all.

I spent the last year persuading my best friend not to kill himself. I'd stay up for most of the night every night. He unfortunately lots his battle to depression on Sunday. His seats in school are empty now

I think what people fail to see is the full picture

You don't know the full story. You don't know why it gets to them, or if it really was a one time thing. Just because it's small to you, doesn't mean it's small to them.

For a lot of those "one-time thing" cases it was the straw that broke the camel's back for them. The had everything go wrong for a while or a long time and that one more bad event makes it worse.
A phrase as simple as 'I could be your friend' or 'I think we could be friends' can make a HUGE difference. Words are power.

I was part of Film Club in HS, and we’d make these really silly amateur short films with absurd plot lines. One of my buddies was this chick Corinna. I had only just met her so we hadn’t gotten super close yet. She committed suicide but I still have one of the little movies we all made, on DVD, and she shows up for a split second here and there as a background character. It tugs at me every time.
The one where someone brought a birthday cake with candles in front of an empty seat hit me like a truck. Please still alive everyone,know that there are actually some good people out there that care. It might take a lot of time to find that one person that u need in ur life but the wait is worth it trust me. Please stay alive to find that person that will love u,care for u,and be with u. Sometimes things get worse before they get better

I wish there had been this commercial in Japan in the earlier 2000s. I totally burned out and went to hopeless. I skipped school, went to violent, slept too much, and strolling along on the street until early morning. I told my friends and teachers about my suffering in my mind, but NOBODY took it serious. They all said, it's my fault and I am spoiled. This type of stigma strongly remains in Japan, though. I really hope this type of message becomes more common over the world.
If you were ever in school and had a classmate die, you know how this feels. You look at their seat and that person isn't even alive anymore

I had a friend survive a suicide attempt, so this hit me very hard. Great job.
I lost a student to suicide and seeing her seat empty was the most heartbreaking thing. It will be a full year in September since her passing. The kids were devastated 😢 and I can only imagine how her family and close friends feel. I strongly consider flashing the suicide hotline number at the end of each presentation I give but I dont think it will be received well. Talk to someone. ❤
Recognizing that 1 person can make a difference, 1 person can be a friend and extend common decency and kindness to others, 1 person can fill a seat or fill a void.

This was touching and so close to home. My friend was the empty seat. I didn't know anything was wrong until I heard his plan. It was too late. Listen without judging. Get help.

Maybe he's going through grief because his friend died and this is his coping mechanism. Additionaly the family with the cake was likely honoring their dead loved with some sort of tribute.
It is a combination of a number of things. Correct lighting, dynamic camera movements, compelling music, etc. The idea is to have a vision that is simple, effective, and relatable by all. Then spend time finding how to make it the most effective. The "cinematic feel" has many different forms, as many as cinema has to offer. I can't really speak to how it is created. I just know that I try to think about it from the angle of every department and how they can contribute to a unified vision.

Most people write off the symptoms of depression as laziness or attention-seeking. I wasn't a good student at school. I slept through classes, constantly doodled, skipped commitments. That was because I couldn't sleep at night, couldn't concentrate on anything, and was too depressed to do anything in general. I had symptoms since I was thirteen and got diagnosed at eighteen. I'm nearly nineteen now and getting diagnosed helped so much. But I wish I could've gotten help earlier. I'm most likely going to be on meds for life now. I've missed out on so many things. My late teens especially were filled with memories of sitting in closets and bathrooms, waiting for my commitments to be over so I could escape. Getting yelled at by teachers for skipping lunch, but I didn't tell them I couldn't bear the social aspect. It's so important to recognise the signs.
This is an example of a perfect PSA. Not a single word spoken, but the emotion is on point. The message is powerful. Even though me and my depressed friend have a somewhat rocky relationship, I never regret calling help for him. As someone who has depression I have won my battle against suicidal tendencies, but I'm afraid some of my friends could lose that battle.

I had a friend, a really close one.
He was transgender, and made fun of, in grade 5 she (at the time) was made fun of for wanting to be male. He liked male pronouns and everything. He went trans about last year, which was the year he committed suicide. I went trans for 6 years so he wouldn't feel alone. I remember I followed him up on our school roof, and we talked. We went back on our lives and all 10 years we've known each other. Every year we talked about, he would take a step back to the ledge. When he was pretty much standing on the edge of the rooftop, he said "I wish there were more people like you", hugged me for a long time, and jumped. I tried to grab him, but I missed. He fell on his head and died immediately. I had to hold myself back so I wouldn't jump too.

The interesting thing is with suicide is that it's on the increase globally.
It seems like a lot of the responsibility seems to be left on the shoulders of the person suffering. Especially from what I've observed from popular gathering sites for discussion about the topic.
"Cheer up-" "Don't give up" "You need to change your attitude" and so on. And I'm sure that to some degree that is true.
I think however this is a classic example of looking at the finger to fix the thumb so to speak.
The greater and I think more reasonable burden is a societal one. Members of society more and more are pacifying the natural social urges that all of humanity experiences by seeking entertainment, and personal recreation. And when someone else begins to suffer (And we all eventually get there.) I think that it's becoming a much more likely chance that that person will be surrounded by those who are just so socially retarded that they can't distinguish the difference between a suicidal person and an asshole. And so they usually reject that person. Begin becoming infrequent in communications, become impatient and oft times even hostile.
I enjoy the PSA because it's not like,
"Oh wow, this kid killed himself. What a dick for not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Guys don't be like this. Get feeling better weirdos with your weird feelings when people don't talk to you or acknowledge your good features and qualities and existence."
Humans are a social species. Depression and suicide are the natural result of an increasingly anti-social shift in global culture. (And don't think that Facebook and surface expressions of feelings and opinions on forums and message boards count as true socialization.)
These happenings are trying to warn our greater social body structure that we need to make an immediate u-turn and get back on course. And leave no more empty seats.

Normally I'd argue that the listed symptoms are not necessarily indicative of suicide, and I have most of them too and I'm fine...but honestly, I'd much rather live in a world where everyone cares a little too much than in a world where nobody cares enough. Nobody suffering in any way should be ignored. This PSA is doing nothing but good.

I can never get through this video without crying. I'm 18, abd have been suffering with suicidal thoughts for over 6 years now. There's not enough support for suicidal teens. If you say something that sounds even a little bit worrying, m cat is called and you're hospitalized, which can make things worse. Do we pretend to be fine. Take care of your friends. If someone looks like they're having a hard time, don't leave them to take care of themselves. It's been 2 years dince my overdose now, I'm not much better, but I have good friends. Be there for your friends

I’ve been battling depression for many years now, and I wish more people understood why this is important: simply check in on your friends, family, students, whoever.
To this day I am still fighting a lot of shame, because the days I was gone I was considered rude, irresponsible, unreliable-no one thinks or realizes you’re sick. I missed classes and other important things and despite having many friends, none checked on me. Everyday that I wasn’t in that seat I was in my room contemplating taking my life. I know it’s really dark and personal to put out on the internet, but experiences like my own are important to share so people realize just how common and serious depression is.

I understand how this feels. I almost ended my own life while I was still in middle school. Thank God I didn't go through with it. And it is better to lose a friendship than a friend.
There can't be enough suicide public service announcements in this country. Suicide, to me, is the single worst way for someone to die. Think about the devastation that it brings the people who love you. Suicide is no joke. I will be sure to step in when I see signs of suicidal tendencies.
Eddie Rattlehead Unfortunately, when someone is suicidal, they can sometimes feel as if no one loves them and like they are doing the people they love a favor by not having to put up with them anymore. That is how I felt at least, when I was so deep in depression. When things are so dark, you feel hopeless and the pain you feel is so deep and so intense you will do anything to stop it.
Thank you for learning the signs though. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my parents who noticed I was suffering and got me help (2 times, when I was 14 and 17). I still suffer from depression at almost 22 years old, but I know that there is a reason I am here, and I am so much better then I was back then. Getting help is hard, and sometimes you need others to get it for you. So thank you, for looking out for the signs. You could really save someone's life.

Oh my gosh. ;-; I have a friend who told me that he was smoking. I told him that it's not good for him... Then he said it's better than the alternative.. Meaning, he had tried suicide before, or he had looked for ways to die.. It almost made me cry. I seriously am not sure what to do. He's only 14! The best thing I can do is try to talk him out of it. I seriously hope it works. Praying for him!
@Catori Aldaine: I'm not an expert on suicide prevention and I'm commenting a year after you did, however, what about telling an adult you trust about your friend's depression, such as a school counselor, a trusted teacher, a parent or relative?
He's gotten help since then, so I think it's under control now. Thank you though. I'll be sure to keep your words in mind if something like this ever comes up again.

I still have these signs.. I am depressed, just not as bad as I was like 6 months ago. I was diagnosed with extreme depression and anxiety.. and attempted suicide twice.. it's almost been a year since I was in the mental hospital..

My friend attempted suicide recently and knowing that they struggled for so long just makes me feel awful not being able to help or notice. This video honestly hits too hard and I can’t help but tear up when I see the empty seat at the birthday.

I thought it was going to be something like a "don't text and drive" thing until the end .. It's a good message -- I've verb through the loss - it's the worst thing in the world .... Someone close used a gun. Literally, it was ten years before I could go to a movie that had gunfire or a gun in it. It really has a horrible impact on the survivors - a scar carried the rest of their lives.
My class had to watch this and I could relate to everything it said at the end and I was trying not to cry..

I know someone that was struggling with depression for 2 years and he was in the 7th grade I was in the 8th grade at the time he always sits on the bus sad looking and me being a nice person I asked him are you sad he was hesitant at first but he opened up to me that alot of passing happened in his family and he tried to kill himself twice I said that you need a friend and I'm here for you it was very sad cause thus kid would always yell at me for no reason which one of the signs mentioned in this video he is better now but far from completely happy he is ok last I heard from him I'm glad he didn't do it remember just being nice to someone can make a difference which is everyone this generation needs to learn cause it's brutal
Growing up I always wondered if I would become that empty seat.
I tried calling a suicide hotline, my hands were literally shaking as I was crying, 15 minutes no one picked up, I hung up, then went to my grandparents room then I toke 10 pills....had to go to the emergency......I see all the people I hurt around me...the WORST FEELING IN THE WORLD! if your considering to kill yourself please don’t, in the long run everything’s gonna be okay I promise

UMMM....OKAY, I GET THE MESSAGE AND EVERYTHING. VERY TOUCHING. HOWEVER, FROM A CREATIVE PERSPECTIVE AND AS SOMEONE WHO WORKS IN ADVERTISING, THIS COMMERCIAL DOESN'T WORK. YOU CAN'T SAY "DON'T LET THERE BE AN EMPTY SEAT" AND SHOW INSTANCES OF PEOPLE STANDING (I.E. THE CHEERLEADER, THE FAN) BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
Thanks for the feedback (not sure about the caps lock). Sorry the piece didn't work for you. However, the intention was to say that if you "Don't Let Their Be An Empty Seat" the seats can be filled once again. Everything can be solved by action and engagement with the community. I would suggest that the message and images are working for people based on the outpouring of support for the video. Either way, the film was created for a community mourning the loss of a large number of teenagers and was constructed as a healing mechanism, not as a commercial. So the fact that others have found it touching is an added bonus. Thanks for the view.

Whatever your intention was, is fine. That's not the point of my critique. This IS a form of a PSA however. And the fact is, you can't say "don't let there be an empty seat" when you're showing instances where there are no seats. It's really that simple. You should've either not included those instances where a seat isn't shown or change your tagline to something that focuses on absence. I work on campaigns like this every day. I've won industry awards. Trust me, I know a thing or two about this stuff.
