I wish there was a PSA like this but about a mentally ill family member, my grandma says, "When your aunt starts to act funny and get nakey, just call me and I'll lock her in her room"
Obviously this is not the point of the campaign, but the duck dodge and roll lesson is actually a pretty important one to know. Like yeah, nobody should HAVE to learn this lesson but it is genuinely solid advice.
The mom knows best line hits me like a truck because moms like these don’t know what’s best for their children, they just keep taking drugs and it’s sad to see
The hunger one I always skip. I’ve been in that situation as a kid and it was rough. Scraping together money and living off of pasta and beans if we had enough to buy some. Sometimes we were so broke we couldn’t even buy drinking water that was barely 50¢ at the time. We always had to worry about the bills and rent… Bad times… I can’t imagine a parent telling their kid to gulp air to keep their mind off of food…
I know exact what you mean. When my abusive father abandoned us I had to do this. Which is why, whenever I see a hungry kid, I give them food or money to get something. I know how much that hurts when you’re a kid, going for weeks without food. Also, it’s really fucked up how much rent costs.
1 & 3 for me I did some drugs to numb the pain of losing people I know. I'm clean now, but people are still getting murdered here unfortunately. In the span of a year, I've witnessed 4 murders right in the vicinity of my house.
@Marine616 Thank you so much, I really am feeling better. I've been homeless for 4 years and just got an apartment, which I will be moving into with my family on the 5th of August. I also got away from my abusive father in the process. ❤️
I lived in a few neighborhoods when I was a kid where shootouts weren't too uncommon. When we heard gunshots, we would turn off the lights and duck. I would crack jokes with my siblings in whispers, since we didn't really know how dire the situation was, we just knew "stay quiet and you'll be safe. Also keep the the lights off" basically. It's a wonder how we ever got out of that situation by the time my teen years came around.
How do you break the cycle of poverty? You have 3 jobs, can barely afford rent, bills, or food? You can't just get a 4th job. You can't move to a cheaper area. Mom's got 3 jobs so she can afford bills/rent and a little food for her to keep going, so the government will say she makes too much for assistance. You can't make enough money to get out of poverty. (My mom had a cook job at a gas station and eventually got a 25cent raise. Then, we kids lost our government health insurance)
I think these PSAs are designed to target those in position to help more than those who are experiencing these situations. They want people to donate time and resources to help via charity. Ideally the government would be stepping in to help. No major change can happen without government intervention unfortunately, and they’re too worried trying to help out the mega wealthy. Something should be done to ensure employees are paid fairly for their work too, because 3 jobs and barely able to afford food and bills is unacceptable. The amount landlords are able to charge for rent is unacceptable and should be regulated more too. I know some people who feel too proud to accept help when it’s needed, but there should be no shame attached to going to services that can help if they’re available where someone lives. Sometimes people can’t do much to help their families but can make individual choices to avoid substance abuse, gambling, etc that can worsen situations. Obviously that alone won’t lift someone from poverty, but for some people it can help. Free classes to help with finances and budgeting can help _some_ financially struggling individuals too. Those in the position to do so could advocate more for those in need, potentially write to relevant politicians and talk about specific flaws in the current systems that need to be fixed. They could volunteer within their local community to help provide people with resources, even just basic essentials like food and clean water. Pressure should be less on the individuals struggling and more on their broader community to help lift each other up in whichever ways they can. There are things those in power can do to at least significantly help, but they aren’t doing those things.
390 million years of evolution and adapting to breathe air so our offspring can get shot by their own species, swallowing air because there's no food, and having to call 000 because their parent overdosed on drugs. The world we live in today!
Actually it's what selfish decisions does to, and does for lots of mfs. All of this, at it's roots, could be dealt with if people just prioritized others a little more when making just SOME decisions in their own lives.
The food one is actually about insincerities about eating disorders and not a eating disorder starving but this story is from dead kids that died from something like the eating one and the duck dodge and roll and if I got that wrong tell me please and I can be more educated about this

What hurts the most is the fact I have struggled with similar situations when it came to the overdose one and hunger one☹️
