    One issue I had with my gen 1 was the driveshaft. I got the famous thump/ clunk feel. Dropped the driveshaft and grease her up with off-road grease. Awesome video. Thanks for the update.

    On my 2010 5.4 it would over heat while towing long grades. I had a shop install the trans cooler from an Excursion which is double the size and uses the same mounting hardware. Almost a direct replacement. No more overheating trans

    Very interesting, I have the same truck color and all but its stock except for Eibach in the front to level it. But mine is the complete opposite it had 85,000 miles but is in MINT condition, apparently Church, the grocery store and the mall where a little ways away to put the miles on it, oh and it must have lived in a garage. I paid 32,300 for it this time last year, and for my wife and I its perfect simply because we just do minor off roading and its the size of a limo. But I think you guys got the perfect one for you, a project truck that you and your sons can take to the next level. I think the universe did us both right for who we are and what we do. The frame on mine was so clean it was like the guy spit shined it every night before he went to bed!!!!

    Sweet scoop on that 14’
    I’m a bit jelly, I had a Roush kit on my 10’ and now I have a 14’ SE similar to yours but I’m more of an over lander. One thing I would suggest is the RPG bump kit, over the SVC as the SVC tends to twist up a bit. Probably why you have seen them on other Gen1’s looking loose to the rear bed frame. Either way I look forward to seeing yours fixed up and out whooping!

    solid truck. gen 1 owner here. Probably less of an issue in CA than here in New England, but keep an eye on those cab corners of the supercrews. I could be wrong but I believe the cab corners rusting out have to do with the drains in the sunroof getting clogged up and the rockers not draining.

    It wont make much of a difference if you change out the transmission cooler if you don't change out the internal thermal bypass valve on the 6R80 transmission. Your trans is still going to reach 205 degrees just driving around. I installed the Ford "Saudi Arabian" transmission cooler on mine, plus changed the thermal bypass valve, and my trans temps are normally 165 cruising.

    Get the full race radiator and trans cooler, they give u half off the cooler if u buy them together. And that rusty thing under the bed on the frame rail is a vibration dampener, you can just cut it off.

    Might be unnecessary but get yourself a new radiator cap, mine blew the gasket and overheated my truck. Got it from Amazon and it’s FoMoCo as well as the Ford funnel. The other major issue I had was the heater core, since yours was in a colder climate I’m sure the previous owner probably used his heat a lot so you might be good there (but flush coolant soon). I recently took the POS fabtech 4in lift kit of my 2010 (precious owners doing…) solo with mad amount of research, parts, tools and will power and she’s back to stock for my needs. If and when I hit up CA again, id be down taking my stock on a gentle run with you. As far as the rust, plenty of shops that can help the frame and body. Bolt rust you can take off and soak yourself. Also, bad ass SVC is doing the whole front end via warranty. That’s a blessing, bro.

      So I’ve found that anything mounted on plastic needs a little help. For example on our Gen2 we used the built right base with a metal plate and industrial Velcro on the dash to keep the movement down. Worked great but did move a little on the trails.

    Love your videos, but as a gen 1 owner there are some things I disagree with. I've got an SVC bedcage with Kings in it and have yet to have any kind of issues with the bed moving, bending, etc. I really think the bed brace is overkill, and if you really want one you can make one yourself for so much cheaper. As for the power steering, yeah the Howe system is pretty, but again really not necessary unless you have a long travel kit on 39's. I have 37's and after installing a $50 power steering cooler I have yet to have any noise or burnt fluid after hard offroad trips including beating on the truck in Mexico. Saying "any gen 1 that plans to do any offroading" should buy a kit that costs thousands of dollars is completely untrue. As for the transmission, again you don't need to go buy a kit costing hundreds of dollars. You can literally use any transmission cooler and splice it into the stock lines.

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  3 роки тому

      So most of the stuff I mention is based on issues I’ve seen my friends with Gen1s face. Bed is very weak and will fall apart with heavy off-roading. Steering racks will fail, and transmission will overheat. I won’t be doing an expensive kit. Basically a bypass valve and a larger cooler with a fan. Most expensive parts will be the labor for the bypass valve since I’m not comfortable with it.

      So on the ecoboost I’ve heard guys have problems and loose power all the time. Turns out the thing Ickes ECU thinks there is a leak or something and pulls timing and you loose power.
      I’ve heard other complain about throttle hesitation too.
      I seen a lot of the videos and posts about how they reduce oil buildup in the intake and valves. But have not seen any side by side long term evidence to support it. Also most catch cans only seem to grab oil from one side and not both sides. So again I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Just seems lib sides.
      It could be swayed to say they are great is I saw some nice side by side comparison and someone explained how to tell the difference between a good kit and a bad one

      Only benefit is oil catching. Can’t get a straight answer on if that oil catching is good and heard too many issues with trucks pulling timing because of them and loosing power. They may be good, but I don’t know the difference between a good one or bad one and can’t find much info on them online to help besides it catches oil.

    • @ogdobber
      @ogdobber 3 роки тому

      If you don’t catch the oil it goes back into the intake and at high temps it crystallises on the walls making the inlet track smaller and adding a risk of a chunk breaking off and damaging piston, valves etc. Simple design that works

    • @KeepItDirtyOffRoad
      @KeepItDirtyOffRoad  3 роки тому +1

      Most engines are designed to burn this oil and I have not seen any proof these catch cans reduce those deposits. Definitely open to seeing side by side comparisons with pictures and all that. But I have not seen that. Lots of personal experiences with not many pics or video. If you have any links to share please do. Would love to be swayed otherwise because this truck actually has one and would rather take it off

      I’ve tried some of those greasy films. Problem is the fine dust clings to it. We have a lot of fine dust out here in Cali. and with the moisture we get in the mornings that fine mist of oil and dust now traps moisture on parts we don’t want to rust, and they rust.
      With the off-roading we do it’s best just to take care of it every few months. Any paint we put on will be sandblasted off anyways while running.
