    Lavs sound great, for locs like this I'd bring in some moving blankets (Floor/glass door side/behind camera). Nice work.

    Thanks Evan for posting results of your PR-2 recording (why I'm here). A few technical suggestions which might help you with this tricky location.
    1- Interiors don't need the full outdoor wind basket/aerostat with furry (this is taking away top end frequencies and pushing your boom further away from source (unless you're painting it out of the frame*), you may even get away without the foam as the mic is static and the air movement around the mic minimal, caveat being plosives. Bringing the mic closer will increase the signal to noise ratio thereby allowing you to reduce the gain on the mic. btw with interiors it tends to be less the environmental BG noise picked by the boom and more the way a voice is resonating in the environment that gives the boom mic a more 'Placed' sound to the speaker than a lav and why well mixed wide will often mix them both when possible. Its also 1 of the reasons why a Cardioid or Hyper-cardioid boom mic is often preferred for interiors over a more directional shotgun mic whos narrower polar pattern is less forgiving of off-axis movement and can exaggerate the reflected sound in a distracting way.
    2- Likewise, get the Lav a bit closer to the mouth and reduce the gain accordingly, most lavs have omni directional polar patterns so for a given distance they DO NOT as such isolate more than a direction (boom) mic. The advantage of a lav is that they can be placed in frame and therefore closer to the source and thereby increasing the signal to noise ratio. They usually have a narrower frequency response as well so this is filtering low end and why "the boom sounds fuller".
    3- Using a baffle of some kind for the AC wont remove the noise but in combination with the above you'll be able to use less noise reduction in post. Perhaps the contractor who services the office AC may be 'interested' in trying to reduce some of the amplitude and bandwidth of the noise - Noise is a significant aspect of an AC system.
    * painting out a boom mic is quite easy to do on a locked off shot, its also standard practice on a green screen, with all the obvious advantages.

    Thanks for sharing! The results sound good, and you did great eliminating the background noise without voices sounding too robotic.
    The PR-2 has impressive results! What really excites me about it is timecode. I got tired of trying to do an auto-waveform sync and praying that it works so I don't have to spend hours manually syncing. And the lav sounds really good!

      I am curious on how the PR-2 is an improvement over the Rode Wireless Go Kit? Is it due to the quality of the Deity Lavs over the Rode Lavs? Or are you using the Rode without Lavs and just using the built-in mics on the transmitter?

    • @Steveoaudioandstuff
      @Steveoaudioandstuff 3 місяці тому

      @marinrealestatephotography the mic seems have a wider dynamic range giving fuller bass tones and clearer top end, and as it records in 32 bit there is no clipping. Plus it shows the levels, has adjustable gain and can be controlled remotely. It's not a transmitter though, but when comparing its onboard recording with a lav to the Rode, it's much better. I did an A/B video which I will put up at some point.

    Thanks for the video Evan - just ordered the PR2 and looking forward to checking it out. On the audio side, I'm with the commenter below on the NTG2 - it's like a kit lens of shotgun mics. Look at the MKH416 or the 8050 or 8060 or even some of the recent Rycote mics. Big difference. Was the AC so bad you had to use the furry on the blimp? If not, I would avoid using wind protection indoors - you're shaving a lot of high end detail off. Sure, you can eq but it's never quite the same.

    Wow! Thanks Evan for this UNIQUE video. As of today, August 6, 2024, out of all the Deity PR 2 videos I've watched, yours is the ONLY one that compares the audio quality of a Deity lavalier with a boom microphone in a real situation with a noisy air conditioner in the background. It convinces me the Deity PR 2 & lavalier are the best solutions for me. One question, please. Have you ever used a V mount battery to power the Nanlite 300w? If so, what is the brand and model that you use. I haven't bought any 300 light yet because I can't find a reliable & long lasting v mount battery that is powerful enough for a 300w light. Thanks again.

    Really good stuff! I personally have the RODE wireless Pro, but I still haven’t used timecode on it yet. And I literally was thinking just the other day that I need to start utilizing it. We still have that old program called plural eyes, which is now discontinued.

    • @evanthecameraman
      @evanthecameraman  3 місяці тому +2

      I wish the Rode didn't need the mic and receiver to talk to each other for timecode to work. The mics are nice and compact, but if you just want to use them as a recorder without the wireless feature (as I do) then they can't do timecode. And if you are using the receiver on your camera then you wouldn't need timecode anyway.
      Thanks for the support!

    Is it a matter of certain gear not being in your kit, or is not using a pencil condenser style boom in doors an intentional choice - vs a boom, which traditionally does better outdoors? That said. the lav sounds better in your use case here. I used lavs indoors over my MKE600, but now use a pencil condenser (se electronics se8) style mic indoors and room reverb / phasing has drastically improved in my limited experience.

      @@DA-lp4rh at the time my only boom mics were NTG2 and S-Mic 2S. I recently picked up a MKH416 which I think would’ve performed much better, but a pencil condenser is on the list.

    Wow, that background noise is so loud that the talent in the blue blazer is basically shouting at you. That's so sad. Perhaps next time bring a couple of sound blankets and a C-Stand to shape the sound of the AC? Not sure if that's practical, but it might work if that's a space you'll use more often 😀

    I say yes to the Lav and the PR-2. I thought the boom mic had too much warble to it. On top of the air conditioner, that was a pretty live room. My brain keeps telling me that the PR-2s are a good buy, espescially since I already have three X Deity TC-1 units. Just I already have some DR-10Ls and probably can only get $80 for them if I try to sell them :(
    Also, forgot to ask what cart you are using. It looks stock, right?

    • @parkviewphotography7529

      We are in the same boat my friend! I have two Tascam DR-10L Pros that I plan to sell. The PR-2s are just incredible and I think will truly dominate the audio market for lavaliers like this.
      When I compared the PR-2 to the Tascam, these are the benefits I see from using the PR-2:
      - Full-color and bigger screen
      - A more fine adjustment to gain
      - Longer battery life (30 hours)
      - 250ft Bluetooth range with app
      - Timecode built-in (and doubles as a timecode device)
      - Control up to 48 devices with the app
      - It can be an audio interface with your laptop
      - Monitor audio via the app on with your cellphone (as long as you aren’t recording)
      - Lavalier sounds better
      - TRS headphone jack that can use jacks that are TRRS (the DR-10L Pro can’t do this at all!)
      - Can record in mono or stereo modes

    • @evanthecameraman
      @evanthecameraman  3 місяці тому +1

      @@marin_real_estate_photography it’s worth the upgrade in my opinion. You could even just do one at a time if financially that is easier to do as you sell the Tascams.
      The cart has upgraded shopping cart wheels for a quieter, smoother roll. I also added black carpet on the top shelf. But aside from that it’s a stock cart. I think I got it in 2019 or 2020 so it’s been through many shoots without fail.
