My wife and I were at CES and we walked by you and she goes "Hey that was your camera guy on UA-cam" lol. Oh and if you want to collab on a dope new storage server for all your footage let me know ;)
Sounds better with noise cancelling off. The timber of your voice does change and it sounds better and more realistic with the ambient background noise. I can situations when it would be helpful though.
Big win for DJI for finally releasing their Mic 2. Really iterating on what made the original DJI Mic great. Just wish that you could keep all the accessories in one case rather than have a split soft case to store them.
Good to see how Dji is improving their mics. I did sell my Rode ones, got twice issues with the power on / off button, so they were not too reliable for my needs. What i would like to see is a set up with 4 mics. This would be a dream coming true. Don’t understand why Rode and DJI do not come out with that. Currently have to use Fulaim for bigger talks / Podcasts. Great review as usual, cheers from Germany.
@@judnichols theoretically you can get to sets and use the other two with internal recording. But I also would like to have all in one. Right now I use a set from Fulaim which does the job but lack additional recording, and also the transmitters are huge.

Can we all just take a minute to recognize how great Gene is at consistently making high quality videos with unique ways of testing things all while getting different opinions and still incorporating everyone's personality. Truly one of a kind.
Love the smaller size of the DJI, but sound quality and the ability to keep your wind filters connected in the case (not to mention download on-mic audio when in the case) still make the rode pro the best choice. DJI's audio is too....tinny? IDK it's just not as robust.
After watching 10 different reviews from 10 different content, creators, and hearing 10 different audio quality comparison…. If I am being honest and unbiased, the road wireless pro, hands-down, has a better audio quality 🤷🏻♂️ It has longer battery life, more internal storage, you can transfer your audio with a USB-C cable connected to the case (DJI mics u have to plug them in individually even tho the case has usb-c), the Lav mics screw in so it can accidentally pull off on the Rode Pros….. but at the end of the day, I circle back to the main thing, the audio quality.. and my honest and unbiased opinion is that the road pro wins hands-down.
Best wireless Mic so far. DJi really innovated this Mic 2 that Rode and Deity need to do with their own wireless mics. What I love about the Mic 2 is the 32-bit sound, bluetooth pairing to smartphones without using app, windscreen can be mounted onto the audio-in port and especially the Multi-Interface hot shoe. The Mi hot shoe is a game changer for sure. No more do I need to plug a cable from Transmitter to audio port on the camera especially with the FX3 that has terrible buzzing sound with wireless mics. Rode doesn't have this feature and they really need to implement it because it makes a huge differences especially when you don't have to charge your Transmintter. The sound quality is a bit better on the Go-ii compare to Mic 2. My only complaint about the Mic 2 is that they are small so battery life is shorter. I do hope DJi will make a PRO version of their future Wireless Mics where we can setup 4 receivers. Also make them a bit bigger for longer battery life. Otherwise, go with the Mic 2 over Go-ii Pro because Rode needs to innovate and play catchup.
Interesting thing is that the rode wireless pro has a much fuller bandwidth especially bottom end, giving a more radio-like sound than DJI. I really like DJI devices, but here it is clearly audible that the lower part of the band is weaker, and u mentioned not using low cut filter
I've been impressed with DJI getting into these mics, I just KNOW Rode is all in and will keep going so it tilts me a bit in this comparison for sure. $548 for the Osmo Action 4 AND the new MIC 2 is a great bundle...
the quality difference between phone and receiver/action4 is that it is using pure Bluetooth to connect to the phone, with the action4/pocket3/DJI receiver it's actually transmitting the audio on a 2.4ghz signal not Bluetooth. Which is also why there was interference in congested areas, the 2.4ghz spectrum is busy.
I picked up some used Godox wireless mics that sound great. It might drop audio a bit more than i'd like and not have internal recording, but they do the trick for $50.
Great review, thanks! As to noise cancellation, I'd shoot with it off and add in post where you have more latitude in control. You an definitely hear the 'limiter' with in mic nc.
I love this video. So right from the heart of life, from practice. Very enlightening. If I hadn't already bought the set, I would do it now at the latest.
Every review I hear makes it clear to me that the Rode sounds better but the DJI has the screen facing you on a camera but the Rode cannot accidentally format your audio in the field. Therefore we went with the Rode. We have Sankens locked into the Rode and it’s a sweet setup. We had three different camera ops accidentally delete the DJI one files in the field so I can’t risk that.
You can't "accidently" delete the footage on the DJI Mics. You have to scroll through several menus and then swipe confirm, to format them. It takes a special kind of fool to "accidently" achieve that.
Great review, thanks! Really not excited about the audio quality, it's not a shade against the Rode. Only case I can think where the voice isolation would suit me is livestreams, otherwise noise cancellation in Resolve works great. (and is adjustable)
What an amazing comparison that you come out with. Thank you so much for the insight. Just a curious question, how did you do the interview using the 3 mics? does one of the mic is recording on its own without the receiver?
Oh man I was in the same convention center as the mighty Potato?! Such a shame I never saw you but it's always fun to see all the areas of CES that one couldn't visit during such a busy week! PS these mics are sweet, but I think I'd skip the Noise Cancellation as it hollows out your voice almost a little too much? But the DJI to DJI connection is so clutch, so that's a W. Here at work the RODE PROs have been super clutch when the Tentacle Syncs are in use on other cameras!
i had 2 sets of DJI mics. Had so send both in because in a year the output jack wasn't holding the cable in anymore. Hope they fixed that. (my average insertions per month:20)
For iPhone, will there be a phone upgrade to allow using the native Camera app instead of a third-party? Or, is that the limitation of how Apple iOS works?
If you use the DJI receiver via lighting (or USB-C if you have a 15 pro) then you should be able to use the native camera app. I think you only have to swap to a 3rds party app if you use only Bluetooth between the iPhone and Transmitter (which you shouldn’t do anyways cause it sounds bad that way lol)
#1: Raw audio with 32Bit float, then use Izotope Rx in post if you have issues. #2: I'm admittedly an Apple pessimist, but it wouldn't surprise me if the bluetooth degradation is on Apple's side and probably because they want Payola/licensing for performance over bluetooth that matches Airpod/Beats
I sold my DJI Wireless Mic 1 and got the DJI Mic 2 but I've had to return it. I compared it with the Rode Wireless Pro and the Rode had noticeably better sound quality.
Aweosme video Gene! The new mics look and sound great, especially with the new features. One question I'd love to ask is, do you have any tips for recording more on-the-fly type videos as I tend to stutter a lot and say "um" even when I have a general idea of what I'm planning to say?
In order to make the Mic 2 fully compatible with the Pocket 3, you need this system so that you can connect the receiver to the Pocket 3 USB-C port instead of using the direct connection. That connection collapses the internal mics on the optional wave file to mono, so you can't record stereo ambience to mix with your voice from the Mic 2. But it's an expensive fix for a problem which should never have been there in the first place.
I've never been a fan of the noise isolation it sounds like everything is getting sucked in a blackhole except for your voice. But just when I was set on the rode wireless dji releases this. I think I still prefer the rode audio over this but it is nice that dji is doing a mic with 32 bit float.

- If you care about the noise reduction, then DJI is the clear winner.
- If you are going to be hybrid between LAV and without, then the clear winner is the Røde.
