I Learned the Hard Way on this 14-Hour Shoot
In this video, I’m sharing a valuable lesson I learned while working on a recent project for a client in the concrete repair industry. The project went great overall, but we ran into a small issue involving overtime and my contract-something every freelancer should pay attention to!
Key Takeaways:
• Communicating clear terms in your contract
• Handling delays and overtime with clients

    Excuse my newbieness, but I don't get the point of this device, I mean, the lower tier DJI mic etc records to pocket AND to the camera audio track simultaneously. I realise the PR-2 is a more pro device but why not add a receiver on the camera so you don't have to sync? or am I missing something?

    • @evanthecameraman
      @evanthecameraman Місяць тому

      It all depends on your needs. The DJI mic does not do timecode and the Rode Pro can only do timecode when it's communicating actively to the receiver. I do not use wireless because I am often in a signal heavy environment or I'm filming out of range for the wireless to work correctly. My needs are straight forward: • Timecode • Small and lightweight • 24-bit or 32-bit mono • Good preamps The Deity PR-2 checks those boxes. Again, I don't need wireless so if they had that feature it's fine but I would rarely if ever find a use for it.

      I also plan on shortening the cables, but running long cables for a few months lets me make sure I know I won't need more before shortening. No audio issues without the shock mount actually. • @leonsardine
    @leonsardine 2 місяці тому

    Thanks Evan for posting results of your PR-2 recording (why I'm here). A few technical suggestions which might help you with this tricky location. 1- Interiors don't need the full outdoor wind basket/aerostat with furry (this is taking away top end frequencies and pushing your boom further away from source (unless you're painting it out of the frame*), you may even get away without the foam as the mic is static and the air movement around the mic minimal, caveat being plosives. Bringing the mic closer will increase the signal to noise ratio thereby allowing you to reduce the gain on the mic. btw with interiors it tends to be less the environmental BG noise picked by the boom and more the way a voice is resonating in the environment that gives the boom mic a more 'Placed' sound to the speaker than a lav and why well mixed wide will often mix them both when possible. Its also 1 of the reasons why a Cardioid or Hyper-cardioid boom mic is often preferred for interiors over a more directional shotgun mic whos narrower polar pattern is less forgiving of off-axis movement and can exaggerate the reflected sound in a distracting way. 2- Likewise, get the Lav a bit closer to the mouth and reduce the gain accordingly, most lavs have omni directional polar patterns so for a given distance they DO NOT as such isolate more than a direction (boom) mic. The advantage of a lav is that they can be placed in frame and therefore closer to the source and thereby increasing the signal to noise ratio. They usually have a narrower frequency response as well so this is filtering low end and why "the boom sounds fuller". 3- Using a baffle of some kind for the AC wont remove the noise but in combination with the above you'll be able to use less noise reduction in post. Perhaps the contractor who services the office AC may be 'interested' in trying to reduce some of the amplitude and bandwidth of the noise - Noise is a significant aspect of an AC system. * painting out a boom mic is quite easy to do on a locked off shot, its also standard practice on a green screen, with all the obvious advantages.

    Nice BTS, Evan. So did you just lav up the adult talent? Didn't see a lav on them so either you did a good job of hiding it. Also, I don't know how other states deal with this, but here in California, there is not only a right to privacy law, but a right to PUBLICITY law, meaning you can't use an IDENTIFIABLE person's image / likeness without them(or their parents) giving approval beforehand. There are exceptions (like for news or political speech, or at sports stadiums), but it gets to be a bummer when a client says something like, "Can you get a shot of attractive people shopping out our store?" Anyway, I know you don't live in California, but I wonder how you deal with 1) shooting in public places where people might get upset that they are being filmed, and 2) Conveying to clients general privacy issues. Thanks in advance.

    • @evanthecameraman
      @evanthecameraman 2 місяці тому

      Yes, just the adults were mic'd up. The lavs were on the underside of the shirt around mid-chest area. To answer your other questions: 1) I've never had an issue filming in public. If I know the shot needs a "subject" I have no problem approaching strangers and asking if they mind being that subject. If there isn't a person I'm focusing on and instead it's just a wide shot of an outdoor area I film without asking. I am mindful with anyone who looks under 18 though as that's more of a moral thing on my part. For kids, I go up to the parent/guardian and ask. Lastly, if someone does get upset I will wait if possible for them to not be in the shot or I skip it all together. 2) I've never had a client try to push me to film a situation that is consider an invasion of someone's privacy or generally uncomfortable. If I do get a request my answer would simply be that I'll try to get the shot if possible but set the expectation that there may be challenges in getting that particular scene. Hope that helps!

    Good video. I like the concept of the PR-2 but I have so many audio things I need to upgrade, and I already have a couple of Tascam DR-10L units, not sure if these are a priority or not.
